Field Day '07
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 168.01
>From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
June 17, 2007
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-168.01
This weekend, 23rd and 24th, will be Field Day. Here is a copy of
KK5DO's weekly ARRL report for AMSAT-
Field Day is right around the corner and things have changed as far as
available satellites. We learned last month that FO-29 had gone silent.
This was one of the work horses for field day.
GO-32 went down on May 6 for approximately 10 days to upgrade the
onboard software. It should be back in service by field day and will
most likely carry many digital messages.
AO-7 will now become one of the more heavily used satellites for field
day this year. The trick is you do not know if it will come up in mode A
or mode B. You must monitor both at AOS and determine which mode it is
in and then jump in and make your contacts.
Next we have AO-27 and AO-51. These are FM satellites so you can only
make one contact on AO-27, a single transponder. AO-51 will have both of
its transponders on and allow you to make one contact on each transponder.
Then there is VO-52. Not as easy as the FM satellites or the mode B
satellites but still, a lot of fun and another source for many contacts.

I've seen many requests for info on Phase 3E. The following link is to
an english translation of the latest information on Phase 3E. It
includes a timeline graph that points to a launch opportunity in
November of 2008. (Excited?)

The June 11th ARRL Atlantic Division News announced the Atlantic
Division Technical Achievement Award is awarded to Jim Sanford,
WB4GCS.
Jim was first licensed in the sixth grade and was a 1976 graduate
of the US Naval Academy. While active in the Navy, he was active
with Navy MARS stations both on ships and on shore.
Jim was nominated for his involvement with the AMSAT program. He
is currently serving as the Project Manager for the AMSAT OSCAR
Eagle project. This project is the next generation high earth orbit
satellite under construction now by AMSAT North America. Eagle will
provide many services and reliable communications on bands not
previously available and will build upon technology developed by
AMSAT-NA for use in P3E. Eagle is currently in development stage
although the major components are finished (and installed on P3E)
and other components such as the software defined transponder have
been demonstrated.

+ Radio amateurs interested in the microwave bands may find the
uWSDR (Microwave SDR) project interesting. The project's goal
is to provide a transceiever operating on the 144, 422, 1268,
2400 MHz bands, etc., covering the whole of each band - i.e.
1240-1300 MHz. Full duplex cross-band products such as L/S are
planned specifically for satellite use. More details are on
the uWSDR website: http://uwsdr.berlios.de (via Grant, G8UBN
for the uWSDR team).
+ The Florida AMSAT net is looking for satellite operators who are
willing to be a guest speaker on their Thursday night net. The
repeater network covers half the state of Florida if you are within
radio range. An echolink connection is available for all others.
Please contact Drew, KO4MA via ko4ma(a)amsat.org if you are interested.
+ An article on P3E appeared in a South African journal called
EngineerIT. It is available on-line at:

To all AMSAT members and satellite enthusiasts,
Field Day is only a week away! Are you prepared? Each year the American
Radio Relay League (ARRL) sponsors Field Day as an emergency
preparedness exercise during the fourth weekend of June. AMSAT promotes
its own version of Field Day for operation via the amateur satellites,
held concurrently with the ARRL event. See the AMSAT Web site's Quick
Reference "Field Day Competition" for details.
You may be wondering what you need to make a contact on one of the
"easy" FM satellites. The simplest equipment to have would be an HT
(either a dual band HT or separate 70cm and 2m HTs) and a small beam
antenna like the home brew antennas described in recent AMSAT Journals
or the commercial Arrow antenna.
These antennas come with a single feed for each band. If you are going
to use a dual band HT, you have to build or buy a duplexer. Be sure you
have the correct connectors. One model of the Arrow antenna comes with a
built in duplexer in the handle but the maximum power rating is only
about 10 watts.
Five to ten watts of power should be plenty for the FM satellites.
Because of the large number of stations trying to get in all at once
many of you will find your best chance for a successful contact is using
a horizon shot or operating when you first get acquisition of the
satellite (AOS) or when you are near loss of acquisition (LOS).
Increasing your power above a standard mobile rig of 25 to 50 watts is
strongly discouraged. FCC rules require the use of the least amount of
power necessary to make the contact.
Make your contact and step aside. This year the rules state only one
satellite contact per FM transponder. Note that there may be two
transponders in operation on AO-51 during field day.
If you can, I recommend that you try to use the linear transponder
satellites like AO-7 where you can make as many contacts as you like. It
takes more skill and different equipment but this can be great fun and
you will learn new techniques.
If you need help you can post a message to the AMSAT e-mail bulletin
board (amsat-bb) or contact your regional Field Operations
representative listed on the AMSAT Web site.
Enjoy field day.

To switch the transmitter on, you need to send a CTCSS tone of 74.4 Hz.
The order of operation is thus: (allow for Doppler as necessary):
1) Transmit on 145.850 MHz with a tone of 74.4 Hz to arm the 10 minute
timer
on board the spacecraft.
2) Now transmit on 145.850 MHz (FM Voice) using 67.0 Hz to PT the
repeater on
and off within the 10 Minute window.
3) Sending the 74.4 tone again within the 10 minute window will reset
the 10
minute timer.

In support of ARRL Kid's Day on June 16 the uplink frequency on AO-51's
FM repeater will be changed to 145.88 MHz with NO PL Tone. Kid's Day is
intended to encourage young people (licensed or not) to enjoy Amateur
Radio. It can give young people on-the-air experience so they might
develop an interest in pursuing a license in the future. It is intended
to give hams a chance to share their station with children. During
Kid's Day operators are requested to minimize routine contacts and allow
Kid's Day stations to have a successful satellite contact.
Following Kid's Day AO-51's mode will change on June 17 to dual L/U and
V/U repeater mode for Field Day. This will give stations the week
before Field Day to check out their stations.

1. Belgian School Contact, a Success
Students attending EFLS Sainte-Marie SUARLEE in Suarlee, Namur, Belgium
participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station
(ARISS) contact on Tuesday, May 29 via the telebridge station W6SRJ in
California. Thirteen children were able to ask astronaut Sunita
Williams, KD5PLB, one question each as an audience of 150 students,
teachers and parents looked on. Students came from three area schools to
take part in the event. Media coverage included newspapers and three
television stations, both local and national. The audio of this contact
was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers,
and received 15 connections from 7 countries, including 3 repeater
nodes. It was also fed into the IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010.
2. 300th Successful ARISS Contact with NASA Teachers Workshop
On Thursday, May 31, Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, answered 9 questions posed
to her by instructors attending the NASA Johnson Space Center (Gilruth)
Teacher to Teacher Workshop during an Amateur Radio on the International
Space Station (ARISS) contact. Telebridge station WH6PN in Hawaii
assisted in the event as approximately 300 K-12 teachers witnessed the
event.
Prior to the contact, an ARISS member gave a talk to the crowd and
explained how an ARISS event gets students interested in math, science,
history, geography, and language. Statistics were given on the number of
students reached each year, contacts performed per year, and how many
more students could participate via the internet and through general
contacts. Bill McArthur, KC5ACR, and his activity while on board the ISS
was mentioned as was the excitement created from the SuitSat-1 project.
Teachers were also given information on the application process.
The audio from this event was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and
JK1ZRW (277 208) servers. It received 17 connections, including 4
repeaters, from the U.S., England, Canada and Australia. It was also fed
into the IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010 which received five connections
from the USA and England.
This event marked the 300th ARISS contact.
3. ARISS Presentation at Huntsville Hamfest
A NASA engineer and amateur radio operator plans to give a presentation
on the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program
at the Huntsville Hamfest in Huntsville, Alabama, which is held annually
during the third full weekend in August. This year the event, to be held
on August 18 – 19, will also host the American Radio Relay League
National Convention. For more information, see: http://www.hamfest.org/

The US Naval Academy's RAFT Satellite reached the end of its
orbital life this week. Data compiled from stations monitoring
its 145.825 MHz downlink indicates that RAFT's de-orbit occurred
between 0200-0300 UTC on MAY 30, 2007. Its final beacon was
heard at 01:45 UTC that day.
Prior to de-orbit the University of California, Irvine satellite
(UCISAT) team was able to activate the XP-217 transponder aboard
the satellite and detected the NAVSPASUR radar net on 05/27/07 at
0602 UTC. The UCISAT team has a website with the audio recording
files and audio spectrum analysis of the transponder tone from
the successful pass. See: http://ucisat.eng.uci.edu/RAFT.php.
The US Naval Academy RAFT web page has a doppler plot of the radar
fence signal and details of the final days in orbit. See:
http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/craft/save-raft.html.
Henk, PA3GUO programmed a special goodbye voice-message from RAFT
which can be heard at:

ARISS Status Report for the Week of May 28, 2007
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 154.06
>From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
June 3, 2007
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-154.06
1. Successful School Contacts
On Monday, May 21, Toyon Elementary School in San Jose, California,
experienced an ARISS contact. Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, answered 13
questions put to her by 13 children. Approximately 470 students
attend the school. Toyon Elementary is a 2004 NASA Explorer School
with minorities making up 87% of the school population.
EFLS Sainte-Marie SUARLEE in Suarlee, Namur, Belgium had an ARISS contact
on Tuesday, May 29 via the telebridge station W6SRJ in California. The
Sainte Marie School is located in Suarlee, a village in Wallonia, the
French speaking region of Belgium. Sixty-five children, ages 3 - 12 attend
the school. There are nineteen 10 - 12 year olds in the class who will
participate in the question and answer session with the ISS. The students
were excited to be participating in this contact and have been studying
the distances between the planets of the solar system. They have also
been using the Internet and newspapers to gather information about recent
space activities.
NASA Johnson Space Center (Gilruth) Teacher to Teacher Workshop had an
ARISS contact on Thursday, May 31 via the telebridge station WH6PN in
Hawaii. Approximately 250 K-12 teachers from across the country parti-
cipated in many sessions throughout the two day workshop including
Constructive Chaos, Correcting Misconceptions in Science, Engineering
Your Way to the Moon, Mars, and Beyond-CEV, Hooked on Math, NASA STS-118
Engineering Challenge, NCLB: Past, Present, and Future, Analogical Reason-
ing: Real-World Examples for Scientific Concepts, Engineering Design
Challenges Program, NASA in Every Child's World, Robotics, and many more.
The event is a partnership between NASA and the U.S. Dept. of Education.
2. ARRL Covers ARISS Activities
Published in the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) QST June issue (p. 24)
is a letter to the editor about how John Spasojevich, K9COE, radio contact
coordinator of the Boulder Hill Elementary School's ARISS contact, is still
getting letters commending him on the event, from the school board, village
officials, and parents. In addition, the children who participated in the
contact are still wearing their ARISS t-shirts. The event took place on
March 6, 2007.
ARRL's June QST (p. 78) also ran a column about space participant Charles
Simonyi, KE7KDP, and his ARISS work. The article included a photo of him
with cosmonauts Oleg Kotov and Fyodor Yurchikhin.
3. Kenwood Radio Status
On Monday, May 21, Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, was able to restore a few
commonly used configurations in the Kenwood radio. One of the modes that
was partially restored was the packet system, although the operations will
be on 145.825 simplex. Configurations of general voice communications and
those used to support school contacts were also saved. A full restoration
of the radio is required for a fully functional radio system. This requires
access to a computer system and certification of the required software.

Once again the AMSAT booth was a target of satellite enthusiasts looking
for the latest information on satellite activity. There was a model of
Eagle and several of the modules being considered for the satellite on
display. Our construction staff answered many inquiries and described
actual tasks ahead to put this bird into orbit. A large banner
indicating Eagle is in the building stage underlines the need for
funding to be building as well.
A Phase 3 E brochure was on the table to show its readiness to begin the
long trek to the launching pad as well. Remember there is a direct
relationship of funding vs. a successful launch.
On Friday night, the joint AMSAT/TAPR dinner held under the wings of
aircraft at the Air Force Museum was a great success. Comments after
the dinner were positive and all enjoyed a great evening of table
chatter and aircraft viewing.
A special thanks to our contacts in Dayton for making the Hamvention run
so smooth for those that assisted in the booth and presented at the SRO
forums.

Richard Moseson, W2VU, Editor of CQ Amateur Radio Magazine announced
CQ Hall of Fame Inductees for 2007 at the Dayton Hamvention. There
are 15 inductees into the Amateur Radio Hall of Fame and three new
members each of the DX Hall of Fame and the Contest Hall of Fame.
The CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame honors individuals who:
1) Whether licensed hams or not, who have made significant
contributions to amateur radio; and/or ...
2) As licensed amateurs, have made significant contributions either to
amateur radio, to their professional careers or to some other
aspect of life on our planet.
Two radio amateurs were recognized for their contributions for amateur
radio in space:
+ Bill McArthur KC5ACR - Astronaut who set various ham radio operating
records from the International Space Station, including being the
first person to complete WAS (Worked All States), WAC (Worked All
Continents) and DXCC (DX Century Club) from orbit.
+ Farrell Winder, W8ZCF - Transmitted first SSTV signals to MIR space
station. Active with MAREX (MIR Amateur Radio EXperiment) and

Kenneth, N5VHO, Project Engineer for the ARISS Program, reported this
week, "Some short term reconfigurations to the Kenwood radio were
attempted on May 21 with limited success."
Kenneth described progress aboard ISS as, "The preset channels that
are used for many of the day to day operations are still inaccessible.
The good news is that a few of the more commonly used configurations
were able to be stored in the radio. One of the modes that was able
to be partially restored was the packet system but the operations
will be on 145.825 simplex. General voice communication as well as
configurations to support school contacts were also saved."
The ARISS team continues to work on a solution for a full restoration
of the radio which is required to return full functionality of the
radio system. This process will require access to a computer system
and certification of the required software. This request is being worked
with all necessary international space agencies so it is thought that
it will take a significant amount of time to get all parties involved
satisfied before the actual restoration can occur.
In summary, the current ISS radio configuration being tested includes:
+ 145.825 MHz simplex is for packet operations only.
+ Voice frequencies have not changed (144.490 up and 145.800 down
for ITU regions 2 & 3 or 145.200 up and 145.800 down for ITU region 1)
In closing, Kenneth wrote, "In the mean time, enjoy the packet
operations when the crew is unavailable and keep listening just in case
one of the ISS crew decide to give out a 'CQ' over your part of the world."

Gould, WA4SXM noted, "Howard Long's LVB Tracker boards were a huge
success at Dayton. We are exploring offering more options in
response to requests from people in Dayton."
Possible combinations are:
1) bare board with info CD
2) board and parts kit with LCD
3) built board
4) built board in an enclosure
Gould requests feedback regarding the configuration the satellite
users would rather have:
+ The bare main board/CD would be probably $25
+ Parts kit around $75
+ Parts kit plus the board/CD around $100
+ Built board around $120
+ Unit in enclosure around $150
Gould said, "These are approximate prices, we need to explore further
what the final cost will be. We will decide what to offer depending
upon the responses received. Let me know what you would like to have
available via e-mail at wa4sxm(a)amsat.org."
Some of the CDs included with the LVB boards at Dayton did not have
the parts list on them.
Kevin, WA6FWF who created the list, is now hosting the parts list
document. So those of you that did not get the parts list on your
CD, you can download from Kevin's site. Thanks, Kevin.

Howard Long, G6LVB has graciously provided his LVB Tracker (Rotor
Controller) Boards for AMSAT to offer at Dayton this year. Kevin,
WA6FWF, has compiled a parts list for the US suppliers: JAMECO,
MOUSER & DIGIKEY. These are the bare boards.
These boards go between your computer using a serial or USB connector
and the Yaesu 5400/5500 rotor controller box. The most common tracking
soft-ware can then control your rotors to track the satellites. It takes
about an evening to build and test the boards. The LCD display is a
nice feature that shows the current position of the rotors. The boards
will allow you to program the PIC processor onboard, and Howard's
software checks for a stalled rotor.
Also included is a CD with all of the LVB documentation from Howard and
the parts list from Kevin with the package.
Plan on attending the Thursday night Pizza and Suds party at Marion's.
The AMSAT Forum Friday 11-2 has an outstanding list of speakers and
topics of interest to all AMSAT members:
+ Moderator: Barry Baines, WD4ASW, AMSAT-NA Corporate Secretary
+ Rick Hambly, W2GPS, President, AMSAT-NA "Summary of AMSAT-NA
Activities in 2007"
+ Peter Guelzow, DB2OS, AMSAT-DL President and Bob McGwier, N4HY,

AMSAT and ARISS enjoyed a successful day at the Smithsonian Museum's
Space Day held at the National Air and Space Museum Saturday, May 5.
A one-half scale model of the Eagle satellite can be seen in these
photos: http://n4hy.smugmug.com/gallery/2819832#150794625
Bob, N4HY, AMSAT Director and VP Engineering, vistited the event and
wrote, "The crowd was large, enthusiastic, and [with all the young
people present it shows] that interest in space is NOT limited to
people who are old enough to remember who Neil Armstrong is. They are
not exclusively American. They are `every man` or `every person`".
An ARISS contact was scheduled with Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, and twelve
children asked her one question each. The audio was fed into the
EchoLink servers and received 14 connections from 7 countries, including
2 repeater nodes.
In describing his photos at ...
http://n4hy.smugmug.com/gallery/2819832#150818569
... Bob says, "The young man in this photo had a great time talking to
Sunny Williams (as did the others in the photos) and the T Shirt you see
him wearing while standing with his beaming family was his winning
design in the T shirt contest. The parents were jumping up and down
clapping, crying their eyes out, and in general, just beside themselves
with emotion watching their kids talk to Sunny. I understand why Rick
can't even begin telling the story without breaking up."
The event included astronaut appearances, hands-on activities, and model
rocket building. Local robotics teams demonstrated their projects with a
robot petting zoo. Visitors were also able to view the Orion Crew
Exploration Vehicle. Space Day draws approximately 10,000 visitors to
the Air and Space Museum annually.
Congratulations and thanks go out to Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, and the entire
ARISS, SAREX and AMSAT teams for this super event!

Piacenza, Italy experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space
Station (ARISS) contact. Astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, answered 11
questions posed to her by eleven students, as an audience of
approximately 150 looked on. An ARISS mentor set up live streaming audio
on the AMSAT Italia website. Five newspapers and the television stations
Telelibertà, Teleducato, Telecolor and RAI covered the event. This is
the first school in Italy with an amateur radio station, callsign
IZ4JSC, which was established for education, instruction and training.
2. German School Contact Successful
Students from Erweiterte Realschule Weiskirchen in Weiskirchen,
Saarland, Germany participated in an Amateur Radio on the International
