Here is a ground floor opportunity for amateur radio operators
interested in experimenting with Software Define Radio. This
week TAPR announced production plans of the High Performance
Software Defined Radio (HPSDR) Janus and Ozy boards.
According to the HPSDR organization, the Janus module is a very
high performance, dual, full duplex, A/D and D/A converter board.
This is planned as a cost effective approach to develop a board
which approaches the performance of professional high end sound
cards. Paired with the Ozy board and with proper software, it
can act like a very high performance sound card external to the PC.
The OZY module is an FPGA based interface controller card that pro-
vides the input and output connections to the real world. OZY also
provides a high speed USB 2.0 interface to the controlling PC.

OSCAR 11 was heard with good steady signals. To investigate the on-board
clock's hour problem Clive would welcome some telemetry from differents
parts of the world, at times when the orbits do not pass over the UK.
Please e-mail to him at <callsign>@amsat.org. The VHF beacon is on
145.826 MHz with AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry. For additional information

+ There are several new pieces of software that are being uploaded and
tested this week on AO-51. Additionally the S band transmitter will be
on for an as of yet undetermined number of daylight passes over the Air
Force Academy ground station in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
+ The US Air Force plans to launch Falconsat-3 in late February. FS-3
will carry an amateur payload along with its primary science mission.
More details on the upgrades and Falconsat-3 will be made available soon.
+ If you're looking for Delaware on the satellites look for Steve, W3HF on
the FM satellites 24 February 2007, during the local afternoon and early
evening.
+ Some satellite operators may be able to copy EME signals from the
Japanese Big Dish Project. JAMSAT is participating with several other
organizations in setting up a 32m-Dish EME station in Ibaragi, Japan.
They plan to be active on 144MHz, 432MHz, 1296MHz and 5.6GHz from 23 Feb
to 24 March at possible windows. Full information is available at:

Hanazono Elementary School in Akashi-city, Japan, had an Amateur
Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday,
February 12.
The Vasant Valley School in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, India has been
approved for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)
contact on Saturday, February 24 via the telebridge station WH6PN in
Hawaii. This school is a Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, crew pick.
2. Crew Training
Astronaut Clay Anderson and cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin recently parti-
cipated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)
contact simulation to prepare for school contacts while onboard the ISS.
Yurchikhin will fly in March as part of Expedition 15, and Anderson is
expected to launch in June.

AMSAT Groups Make Donation to AMSAT-DL to Facilitate
Completion of P3E Satellite Amateur Radio Satellite
Following a meeting between representatives of the AMSAT groups
from North America (AMSAT-NA), The United Kingdom (AMSAT-UK),
and Germany (AMSAT-DL), a decision has been made by AMSAT-NA
and AMSAT-UK to donate a total of 40,000 Euros to AMSAT-DL for
the purpose of funding the continued operation of the "Zentrales
Entwicklungslabor for Electronik", (Central Development Lab for
Electronics, aka "The ZEL").
The ZEL was established over 20 years ago at the University of
Marburg by AMSAT-DL for the purpose of satellite construction.
It is in this suite of workshops that several amateur space
frames have been constructed, integrated and tested, including
the famous OSCAR 13. The ZEL is staffed by approximately 10
engineers, technicians, administrators, etc., who are a mixture
of University employees and AMSAT-DL volunteers. The major current
project in the ZEL is the construction of the Phase 3E satellite
(P3E). Although construction is centred at the ZEL many of the
components come from other parts of the world, including the
Integrated Housekeeping Unit (IHU-3), the CAN-Do buss interface
modules, and the STAR camera from AMSAT-NA and the U/V SDX trans-
ponder module from AMSAT-UK.
P3E is considered vital to the amateur radio space community for
a variety of reasons. Currently there is no high orbit satellite
carrying analogue transponders allowing DX multiple simultaneous
contacts. There are amateur radio satellites in low earth orbit
but these, because of their low orbit, only support relatively
short range contacts and are only visible for short periods of
time (e.g. 10 - 15 minutes). The proposed orbit of P3E will cause
it to be visible from amateur radio stations on earth for several
hours at a time, allowing increased periods of operation and
experimentation.
P3E is considered a 'low risk' approach based on many of the design
parameters of the hugely successful OSCAR 13. In order to keep costs
low, it is based on a flight spare chassis left over from the OSCAR 13
development programme. There will, however, be several new innovations.
For example, the Mode U/V transponder, with a planned 80 KHz bandwidth,
will be based on DSP technology using software developed in the UK and
SDR HELAPS jointly developed with AMSAT-NA. The IHU-3 will be a new
development based on a unit successfully tested on OSCAR-40. There
will be several other experiments which will test techniques needed
for the proposed flight of an amateur radio spacecraft to Mars
(Phase 5A), for example, a low power beacon simulating the weak signals
that it will send from the Phase 5A satellite (P5A) on its journey to
Mars. This will allow radio amateurs to test their stations in readi-
ness for P5A.
The optimal years for launching a Mars bound spacecraft are 2009 or 2011
so it is important that P3E is launched as soon as possible. This is
currently planned to be at the end of 2008. It is realised that the next
important step is to obtain an agreement with a suitable launch agency to
undertake to fly the satellite.

There will be talks, demos, tutorials and plenty of socializing on amateur
satellites, ground station set up, and high-altitude balloon experiments in
the greater mid-Atlantic USA area.
AMSAT members, students, educators & the public are all invited. No

RSVP is needed. Come as you are, but bring a friend and pass the word!
The event will be held in the Pioneer Hall at the Historical Electronics
Museum
(HEM) at 1745 West Nursery Road, Linthicum, Maryland (ZIP 21090) near BWI
airport. Starting time is 11 A.M. local for the day long event.

1.Canadian School Contact Successful
Students from Ecole elementaire publique Le Prelude experienced an Amateur
Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday,
January
4. The event was held at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa.
Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, greeted the students in both English and French
and
answered 21 questions put to her by twelve K-6 graders. An audience of
175 was
present for the contact, including two elected members of Federal
Parliament,
one City Councilor, the School Board Chair, and the president of Radio
Amateurs
of Canada (RAC). Among the media attending were four major French and
English
television stations. Audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW
conference room servers; seventeen connections were made from 6 countries.
2.Winnebago Reservation School Contact Successful
On Thursday, January 25, students at the Winnebago Public School spoke with
Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, via Amateur Radio on the International Space
Station
(ARISS). Nineteen students were each able to ask one question. An
audience of
approximately 500 students, teachers and parents listened over the PA
system.
Television station Channel 9, from Sioux City, IA and the Sioux City
Journal
covered the event, interviewing at least 9 students. The school posted
information about the ARISS activities on its website.

Winnebago is a rural, Title 1 school with 86% of the school population
coming
from economically disadvantaged families.
3. ARISS New York Contact to be Rescheduled
The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact
with East
Aurora Middle School in New York, originally slated for Thursday,
February 1,
has been cancelled due to scheduling issues. The event will be
rescheduled in
the near future.
4.ARRL Article Covers ISS Crew
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran an article on ISS Hams and
upcoming
spacewalks.

5.Boulder Hill Elementary Prepares for ARISS Contact
Boulder Hill Elementary School in Montgomery, Illinois has been
preparing for
an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. The
school has a radio club made up of 30 members from the fourth and fifth
grades; two-thirds of the members are girls. The Fathers Club and PTA are
preparing for the contact, making a stage curtain, and trying to obtain
space
food and astronaut costumes for the teachers. They also plan to invite an
astronaut to visit the school. Display cases have been set up
publicizing the
event, providing information on the International Space Station, space,
solar
energy, (complete with solar panels), and satellite models and rockets. A
documentary is in the works, which will cover all activities related to the
contact. An Illinois state representative and state senator have been
invited
to attend the event, tentatively planned for the spring.
6. ARRL Article on Students SuitSat-2 Work
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a web story on the college
students
who are participating in the SuitSat-2 software defined radio hardware
testing
and development.

+ On February 3, 2007 Craig, KL4E conducted a live amateur radio
communications exhibition for the PQ-13 pilots and support per-
sonnel of the 491st Aviation Regiment, ASDF, at Camp Carroll
on Fort Richardson, Alaska. For the satellite portion of the
demonstration, Craig operated on AO-51 and SO-50.
+ Taking advantage of good operating conditions aboard the recently
recovered AO-27 satellite its controllers have shifted the bird's
schedule to begin 7 minutes earlier than usual and have extended
the transmitter's on-time to 8 minutes. This will allow operators
to contact the satellite DXpeditions currently active aboard cruise

Space Station will likely remain operational until 2025 according
to the head of the Russian spacecraft manufacturer Energia. Nikolai
Sevastyanov said Tuesday, "By 2009-2015, Russia will be the only
country able to deliver crews to the station. No one is going to
sink or drop the ISS, as all countries realize that the station is
becoming a full-scale industrial facility in space. Although it is
scheduled for decommissioning in 2015, its operational life could
be prolonged until 2025. Energia has proposed making the station
permanent. If we terminate its existence, it would be hard for man-
kind to implement such a project anew."

Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, writing from the US Naval Academy Satellite
Lab in Annapolis, Maryland reports, "We've reached the end of
PCSAT-1 packet digipeater operations from the most rececnt full
sun period."
During the 1/19/07 afternoon pass over USA, PCSAT-1 was overloaded
over the west coast and crashed back to W3ADO-1 at 1850z. But one
minute later ground controllers had AOS at the Naval Academy ground
station and recovered it to PCSAT-1 and digipeating.
But the number of users was just so high, that there was no way
PCSAT-1's batteries would survive the next eclipse. So after 8
minutes of operations and just prior to LOS, the Naval Academy
turned off the digipeater and set the MYCALL to NODIGI as a way of
letting users know the digipeater was off.
This is probably the end of this PCSAT-1 operating period. Ground
controllers will see if the NODIGI will hold. But eclipses still
get longer and eventually PCSAT-1 will be back to resetting on every
orbit and be practially useless except mid-day sunnyside passes for
a lucky packet or two.
The next full receovery period will be the second week in March.

TELEMETRY AND REPORTS WANTED!
To investigate the date problem mentioned below, I would welcome some
telemetry from differents parts of the world, at times when the orbits do
not pass over the UK. These times are approximately from 10:00 to 16:00 and
from 19:00 to 04:00 UTC. If you don't have a decoder, I can now accept
short WAV files of good audio, duration up to 30 seconds.
I would also like reports of reception around the times of expected beacon
switch ON and OFF. No telemetry wanted, just when you listen, and whether
you heard, or didn't hear the bird. Please e-mail to the address below.
During the period 29 December 2006 to 23 January 2007, the satellite was
heard from 08 to 18 January. Good steady signals have beeen heard on all
passes, and excellent copy of the telemetry obtained.
The on-board clock has maintained accurate time, over the reporting period,
gaining 2.5 seconds. However the hour counter sometimes shows an error of
of 10 hours, ie. in its most significent digit. The 'day of the week'
counter operates reliably, zero representing Thursday.
The date counter appears to be incrementing correctly, but the day of the
month is not reset to one, at the end of each month. Possibly, it resets
to 41, ie. the unused bit representing 40 permanently stuck at a one. On 17
January the date was shown as 51 December 2006. Further investigation is
required to establish exactly how the date connter changes.
If the satellite's watchdog timer continues to operate normally, the beacon
should switch ON around 28/29 January 2007. The satellite is in full sunlight
at the present time, and will remain in this state until mid-April 2007,
when eclipses start again.
I am indebted to Bob G4VRC and Dean AL7CR for their reports. Reports around
the times of the expected beacon switch ON/OFF, are especially useful. Many
thanks.
The current status of the satellite, is that all the analogue telemetry
channels, 0 to 59 are zero, ie they have failed. The status channels 60 to
67 were still working. The spacecraft computer and active attitude control
system have switched OFF, ie. the satellite' attitude is controlled only by
the passive gravity boom gradient, and the satellite is free to spin at any
speed. When telemetry was last received it showed that one of the solar
arrays had failed, and there was a large unexplained current drain on the
main 14 volt bus. After 22 years in orbit the battery has undergone around
100,000 partial charge/discharge cycles, and observations suggest that it
cannot power the satellite during eclipses, or sometimes during periods of
poor solar attitude.
The watchdog timer now operates on a 20 day cycle. The ON/OFF times have
tended to be very consistent. The average of many observations show this to
be 20.7 days, ie. 10.3 days ON followed by 10.4 days OFF. However, poor
solar attitude may result may result in a low 14 volt line supply, which
may cause the beacon to switch OFF prematurely, and reset the watchdog
timer cycle. When this occurs, the beacon is OFF for 20.7 days.

VHF 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry
UHF 435.025 MHz. OFF
S-band 2401.5 MHz. OFF

Yesterday afternoon I had the distinct pleasure of working some DX on AO-7
mode B from here in subtropical Florida. I caught a 4 degree max pass to the
northeast that eventually covered a good bit of northwestern Europe, and had
the pleasure to catch G1WPR in IO93 finishing up with K3SZH. Signals were 55
with some QSB on my uplink, probably due to all the energy wasted in heating
the neighborhood palm trees. My QTH does not have what anyone could consider
a clear horizon! As I was going LOS I also heard I believe W3JZ working
G1WPR. At the time the footprint extended across the US from Idaho to
Central Florida, and just about all of Canada, so the opportunity to work
some satellite DX is there for many.
The 24 hour timer continues to change modes while the satellite is in
continuous illumination, with the mode change occurring around 1130 UTC.
Eclipses return April 3rd, 2007, and we expect the timer to be interrupted
near this date.A good website to check to quickly find out what mode it is

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION STATUS REPORT: SS07-04
HOUSTON - This week, the crew aboard the International Space Station
prepared for an unprecedented series of spacewalks. NASA astronauts
Mike Lopez-Alegria and Suni Williams are scheduled to begin a
6.5-hour spacewalk from the station around 9 a.m. CST on Wednesday,
Jan. 31. It will be the first of a record four spacewalks planned
during the next month.
Lopez-Alegria and Williams will conduct other spacewalks on Feb. 4, 8
and 22. The first three spacewalks will originate from the station's
Quest airlock and the astronauts will use U.S. spacesuits.
Lopez-Alegria and cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin will use Russian
spacesuits for the last spacewalk and will exit the station from the
Pirs airlock.
The three U.S. spacewalks will rearrange the station's cooling system,
bringing online new portions of the system that were activated during
a shuttle mission in December 2006. The Russian spacewalk will free a
stuck antenna on the ISS Progress 23 cargo craft docked to the aft
end of the station, ensuring that craft can safely undock in April.
The crew began the week unloading some of the more than 2.5 tons of
food, fuel and supplies that were delivered to the station on Jan. 19
by the ISS Progress 24 cargo craft, which included fresh produce,
gifts from home, new clothing, spare parts, oxygen and water.
The crew's attention quickly turned to preparations for the upcoming
spacewalks. On Monday, the crew began working with the U.S.
spacesuits. Batteries for the suits were charged, and the suit
cooling systems were cleaned.
On Tuesday, Lopez-Alegria and Williams trained using an onboard,
laptop computer-based simulation. The training refreshed their skills
operating the Simplified Aid for Extravehicular Activity Rescue, or
SAFER, jetpack that is worn on spacesuits. The backpack allows
spacewalkers to fly back to the station in the event they become
separated from the complex.
On Thursday, ground controllers in Houston commanded the station's
robotic arm to maneuver into the position it will occupy for the
start of the spacewalk. Aboard the station, the crew reviewed the
plans for the first spacewalk.
Lopez-Alegria and Williams continued checks of their spacesuits and
checks of the SAFER backpacks Friday. The SAFER backpacks are
propelled by compressed nitrogen gas, and, during the checkout, the
harmless gas was released, depleting the nitrogen in one unit below
the usable quantity. Two other usable SAFER backpacks remain onboard,
however, and the loss of the third unit does not affect plans for the
upcoming spacewalks.
The crew took time during their work on Monday to speak with
television host Martha Stewart. Crew members also took time to field
questions by amateur radio from two schools, one in Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada, and another in Winnebago, Neb.

wrote, "I have a highly interesting technical article for the Journal
on oscillator stability but it is written in German. Unfortunately I
cannot make the translation and need some help. Is anyone out there
able to translate German that could help? John Bubbers used to do that
for us but he has retired so I need some assistance. It is several
pages long. You'll get credit in the Journal for the translation."
* The Tokyo Institute of Technology Cute-1.7+APD team reported this
week that the call sign of C0-56 (also known as Cute-1.7 + APD) had to
be changed from JQ1YCC (old call sign) to JQ1YPC (new call sign).

* AMSAT-NA server manager Paul, KB5MU reported an outage with all
callsign(a)amsat.org mail aliases (including anything(a)amsat.org addresses)
between 0930z to 1852z on 1/24/07. Service has been restored and no
updates were lost. Messages sent to your mail aliases during the outage
will have been bounced back to the sender with a "User unknown" error
message. You may see some residual error messages still working their
way through the worldwide email system, but service at amsat.org should
be back to normal now. If you see any ongoing problems with the mail
alias system, please notify mail-alias-service(a)amsat.org and Paul
promises to investigate.
* Pehuensat's elusive signal was copied in Buenos Aires, Argentina
on 01/21/07 at 21:48 LU (GMT-3). Pehuensat-1 was heard on 145.825 with
a weak but clear signal just above noise by ear, but they unable to
decode the AX25 packet beacon. The rig was a FT-736 & omni super turn-
stile antenna for 2 meters. Engineer Jorge Lassig, director of the
Penhuesat Uncoma project informed amateurs that the satellite takes
between 48 and 72 hours to charge its batteries, due to the inadequate
position of the nosecone to which it is still attached in reference to
the sun. Once the batteries are recovered, the satellite transmits
during several orbits until they discharge again causing the onboard
computer to set the system in safe mode, leaving just the oscillator
on. Folks at Uncoma are evaluating when the nosecone will change its
position in space to improve the battery charging process of Penhuesat.

NEWINGTON, CT, Jan 24, 2006 -- Eleven electrical engineering students at
The College of New Jersey

software defined radio (SDR)
hardware that will fly aboard SuitSat-2. The college seniors signed up
last fall for "Software Defined Radio
," taught by adjunct professors Bob McGwier, N4HY, and Frank Brickle,
AB2KT -- both members of the
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS
<http://www.rac.ca/ariss>) SuitSat-2 team.
The second SuitSat will have a software designed Amateur Radio
transponder (SDX) on board. SuitSat-2
is being viewed as a test bed for the hardware AMSAT hopes to launch on
its Phase 3E Eagle

satellite.
Early on, the students studied signal processing and communication
theory as well as what Brickle
calls "esoteric corners of computer science." Then, using Matlab
<http://www.mathworks.com/>
-- a high-level technical computing language -- the students
implemented modulators and
demodulators for SSB, FM, BPSK and AFSK.
"Students get a little bit of verbal swimming instruction, and then we
toss them straight into the
ocean," is how Brickle described the process.
By mid-semester, the students were designing their experiments and
getting them up and running.
Boards were powered up without diagnostic hardware or software, since
that's how the circuitry
will be on orbit -- "walking a tightrope without a net," as Brickle sees it.
"Given the complexity of what the SDR/SDX in SuitSat-2 will be required
to provide, the applications
will need to run in an unprecedented software environment: pre-emptive
multitasking under
freeRTOS," he explained. FreeRTOS is an open-source, round-robin
operating system for
embedded devices.
Instead of being scared off, the students ran with the challenge and
demonstrated obvious enthusiasm,
Brickle reports. "We will be doing a very good thing if we continue to
involve these kids, and more like
them, in our future AMSAT projects," he said. What surprised him most,
he added, was that the students
focused on taking new approaches to "very fundamental engineering issues
that aren't flashy or trendy."
McGwier remarked that both students and teachers shared in the excitement.
The SuitSat-2 team, under the leadership of Lou McFadin, W5DID, has been
working on the design of
a power converter for the solar panels, the internal housekeeping unit,
the antenna mount, the transmitting
and receiving hardware and how it will mount atop the suit's helmet. An
ISS crew could launch SuitSat-2
during a spacewalk as early as next fall. SuitSat-2 could have an
operational lifetime of six months or more.

AO-27 Recovered and Operational

As of 14 January 2007 AO-27 was once again recovered and returned to operation
through dedicated work of the Command Team.
Michael, N3UC, reports that after working on several problems with the AFSK
modem on AO-27, they were able to upload the flight code. AO-27 is now
running the EOS software and sending good telemetry. With the TOPR schedule
now running the Analogue repeater has been turned back on.
The current schedule turns the satellite on during ascending passes (South to
North) at approximately 30 degrees North latitude. Initially there is 20
seconds of telemetry data followed by 5 minutes of analogue repeater
operation. Then an additional 60 seconds of telemetry data is sent before
the satellite transmitter turns off.
Please keep in mind that AO-27 is 13 years old and takes some work to keep
going.

ANDE / FCAL Object Number Correction

Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, reports that CELESTRACK has had the names of ANDE MAA
and FCAL swapped. Bob says, "I clearly heard the difference during an
overhead pass. The signals from ANDE were clearly 2 minutes ahead of where I
was tracking. What I thought was ANDE MAA is actually
FCAL and when I pointed at FCAL, I found strong signals from ANDE"
To summarize,
29667 is REALLY FCAL
29664 is REALLY ANDE MAA
CELESTRACK has had them reversed in its AMATEUR satellite list.

Falcon/Demosat Launch Delayed

During final check-outs prior to static fire, an anomaly was uncovered with
the thrust vector control (TVC) pitch actuator on the second stage that will
result in launch being pushed to February. Since this is not used during the
static fire, we have decided to push forward with that test in order to
acquire valuable data on engine ignition, pad acoustics, and the overall
system response. The static fire is now planned to occur between Saturday and
Tuesday (California time). This test will proceed very slowly and then only
burns for about four seconds. A video will be posted to the SpaceX website
afterwards.
Upon completion of the static fire, the rocket will be taken back into the
hangar to thoroughly investigate the TVC issue. With the range available to
us only until January 23 (Kwaj needs to reconfigure for an incoming Minuteman
mission), this means launch is now planned for mid-February. Elon Musk,
SpaceX CEO said, "As I've mentioned previously, don't hold your breath for
this launch. Given the large number of robustness improvements and the fact
that our vehicle/pad health verification system has increased from about 30
checks to almost 1000, shifts in the launch date are to be expected."

1. Successful Sherman Elementary School Contact
Sherman Elementary School in Henrietta, New York experienced a successful
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday,
January 8. Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, answered the sixteen questions asked of
her by 8 students. The audio for this contact was fed into the EchoLink
AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers and into the IRLP Discovery
Reflector 9010. Thirty-two connections were made to the video which was
streamed on the internet. Two local newspapers and television stations
covered the event. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle ran an article on its

2. Dilworth Elementary School Contact, a Success
On Monday, January 8, 2007, students at Dilworth Elementary School in San
Jose, California participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space
Station (ARISS) contact with Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, onboard the ISS.
Twenty-two students were able to ask one question each, as approximately two
hundred fifty students, parents and teachers looked on. Two newspapers
covered the event. The San Jose Mercury News ran a web story with a video
clip of the contact. See:

The story ran in the printed edition of the paper on Tuesday, January 9. The
event will also be covered on the front page of the Cupertino Courier’s
January 17 edition.
3. ARISS Upcoming School Contacts
École élémentaire publique Le Prélude in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada has been
scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)
contact on Wednesday, January 24 at 13:55 UTC. All students, grades K-6, will
participate in a space exploration unit leading up to the ARISS contact. They
will make posters and contribute to a group mural related to the event. The
school’s website will post a special section on space designed by the
students. Sixth grade students will study the solar system as part of their
science curriculum, and an astronaut appearance will be planned. Students
will also write to local dignitaries inviting them to attend the event, which
will be held at the Science and Technology Museum. The contact will be
available on the internet for the entire school, as well as other schools,
and the media will be notified.
Winnebago Public School is located on the Winnebago Indian Reservation in
Nebraska and has been slated for an Amateur Radio on the International Space
Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, January 25 at 14:18 UTC. Amateur radio
operators will be invited to present to the students such topics as
propagation, solar flares, and signal bouncing. Hands on activities are
planned. A competition will be held among 9-12 grade students in order to
choose the questions that will be asked of the astronaut. Grades K-12 will
compete to design the school’s QSL (contact) card. Newspapers and television
and radio stations will be invited to the event.
4. ARRL Article on Australian, New York Contacts
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran an article on the Amateur Radio on
the ISS contacts with the Australian Jamboree scouts and the Sherman
Elementary School students. See:

5. Sunita Williams Enjoying ARISS Contacts
An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) member sent a
message congratulating Sunita Williams on the fine job she has been doing
with her ARISS contacts. She responded with a note indicating that she really
enjoys the contacts as they have been informative and interesting, and she
looks forward to participating in many more. Thank you Sunita!
