December 24, 2006 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-358.01 ANDE, RAFT and NMARS were deployed from the Space Shuttle on 21 December 2006. RAFT and NMARS have a very high spin rate. NMARS is spinning at at least 60 RPM and RAFT at maybe half that. This will make getting a complete 1 second packet difficult due to fading on linear antennas. The Naval Research Laboratory science mission of ANDE is to measure the density of the upper atmosphere by precise tracking of the orbit decay by the Maui Laser Ranging Tracking Station. The Comm system provides important telemetry on the attitude and temperature of the spacecraft. RAFT carries a 216.98 MHz receiver/transmitter to demonstrate self-location techniques when it flies through the Space Surveillance Network radar fence across the southern USA. When this experiment is activated, users will hear a 1 second ping when it flies through the fence. ANDE and RAFT also carry packet radio communications systems and join with other US Naval Academy APRS digipeating satellites such as PCSAT-1 and PCSAT2. ANDE and RAFT will respond to the path alias of APRSAT and ARISS. This is so that users do not have to reconfigure their path between satellites or between their ISS groundstation. December 24, 2006 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-358.03 The GeneSat-1 mission is proceeding very well. Biology data shows definite growth. Payload temperature control is doing a good job of holding the median payload temperature close to 34 deg C (the latest data shows median payload temp of 33.42). The 2.4 GHz communications link is functional and supporting the required level of procedural execution by the ops team. So far nearly all commanding has been done in the very early morning hours, over time the Ops Team will also be interested in assessing how time-varying (and most likely directional) 2.4 GHz noise affects the command link (e.g. how 2.4 GHz wireless noise increases during normal working hours) The 70cm beacon downlink is excellent although the frequency has shifted down to about 437.0645 MHz. So far over 7100 beacon packets have been submitted by Amateurs world-wide. The GeneSat team is also happy to report the winner of the GeneSat First Contact Prize for the amateur radio community: Ralph Wallio, WØRPK. Ralph successfully decoded 5 beacon packets at approximately 13:44:28 UTC on 16 December 2006, which was about 85 minutes after GeneSat deployed from the PPOD. Ralph is located in Iowa. December 24, 2006 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-358.04 1. Swedish School Contact Successful On Sunday, December 17, students attending Thunmanskolan in Knivsta, Sweden spoke with Swedish astronaut Christer Fuglesang, KE5CGR/SA0AFS, on board the ISS via the telebridge station VK4KHZ in Australia. Fuglesang was able to answer 13 questions posed to him by thirteen students. Audio was fed to the Echolink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers and to IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010. Fifty connections from 12 countries were made to Echolink, including 5 simplex and 3 repeater nodes. Eight stations connected to IRLP from Canada, U.S.A, and Sweden; 25 listened to the audio as it was streamed on the Discovery website. The audio was also webcast courtesy of Verizon Conferencing. 2. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact is planned for the Kashiwabara Community Center in Sayama, Japan on Wednesday, December 27, at 12:22 UTC. Kashiwabara Community Center will plan and support this children’s event with the two area schools: Kashiwabara Elementary school and Kashiwabara Junior High school. The children will be taught about the ISS, space and amateur radio, and will take a field trip to visit the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Members of JAXA will also be invited to the event. 3. Training Status On Thursday, December 14, astronaut Tim Kopra and future space participant Charles Simonyi took and passed their amateur radio license exams. In addition, Simonyi received training on the Kenwood radio and Amateur Radio on the ISS school operations. 4. ARRL QST Articles on ARISS The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran several stories covering Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) related activities in the January issue of QST. A bullet item in the monthly list of touted Amateur Radio accomplishments described the discussion about SuitSat-2 by the ARISS Team at the ARISS Annual Meeting in San Francisco (page 12). A letter to the editor was run from a person who upon learning about ARISS, decided he wanted to become a ham radio operator in order to talk to astronauts. He succeeded in studying for and passing his ham radio exams, and was very lucky (and excited!) to speak with Bill McArthur. His letter was written to thank Bill for his time spent doing outreach to the public while chatting via ham radio (p. 24). A story was run about AMSAT’s Annual Symposium describing McArthur’s excellent talk at the symposium banquet. The story included his photo (p. 75). 5. Thomas Reiter Active on Voice On Monday, December 11, Thomas Reiter was active on the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) radio. December 17, 2006 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-351.01 This week Drew Glasbrenner KO4MA, AMSAT-NA VP Operations reported that the CTCSS 67 Hz subaudible tone used on AO-51's uplink to enable the FM transponder has been turned off. Carrier access is all that is re- quired to access this satellite. Drew explained further, "The 67 Hz tone was originally designed to allow AO-51's downlink to be switched off when the satellite was not in use. The use of the subaudible tone access has been problematic over areas of heavy use and when trying to identify the seemingly growing interference issues experienced on the 2 meter uplink frequency." Access into AO-51 is expected to improve worldwide. Despite the near ubiquity of subaudible tone enabled radios in North America, many areas of the world have limited or difficult access to this type of equipment, even in commercial off-the-shelf gear. Carrier-access enables amateur radio operators in these areas to use the satellite. Drew concluded, "Full duplex operation is the most courteous and efficient means of operating the FM satellites. This allows you to listen to the downlink before you transmit as well as when you transmit to reduce QRMing other users. Also, please continue with renewed vigor to help identify and eliminate both non-amateur interference, and amateurs operating outside of the established bandplan that interfere with our satellites." December 17, 2006 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-351.02 Dick, WD4FAB, mechanical engineer on the AMSAT Eagle satellite, reported the news that the Eagle Project has received the prototypes of the heat sinks that will be riveted into Eagle's high-power electronic modules to enable the dissipation from the power devices in those modules. Dick thanked the team, "The heat sinks were fastidiously machined by our friends at Embry Riddle Aeronautic University, Daytona Beach, Florida. This is the culmination of discussions started over a year ago. We are very much indebted to Embry Riddle and Dr. Al Helfirck, K2BLA, a very long-time operator, for their participation in the Eagle Project. A tip of the hat to Al and his gang." What makes these heat sinks very special is that they are machined from a high thermal conductivity, 99% pure, aluminum. This alloy is 33% higher conductivity than alloy aluminum, and as such it is quite soft and difficult to machine. In addition, the surface finish of these parts is also demanding and Embry Riddle Aeronautic University has presented us with a superb product. Prior to launch the heat sink module surfaces will be protected by a plastic film to protect the thermal conductive and radiative surfaces of importance, as they all are of delicate and soft alloys. December 17, 2006 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-351.03 ARISS Project Engineer, Kenneth, N5VHO provided a status report on the amateur radio gear aboard the International Space Station. He said, "The Phase I amateur radio gear in the FGB module appears to have developed an intermittent audio issue that will require some crew time to be scheduled in order to try and determine the cause of the problem. This system has been used primarily for school con- tacts since the packet system associated with that radio began exhibiting problems during Expedition 6." Kenneth continued, "The Phase II system in the ISS service module has not been operating properly since August 2006 when the default settings for the radio changed. The radio transmits and receives well and it will continue to be used for school contacts. But, until the radio is reprogrammed, only intermittent operations will be possible. A computer designated for amateur radio operations will allow reprogramming of the radio and is planned to arrive on the next Progress vehicle in 2007. Until the radio is reprogrammed, it is un- likely that any of the automatic modes such as Packet and APRS, SSTV or the Crossband Repeater will be operating or will only operate for brief periods of time." December 17, 2006 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-351.05 * The STS-116 Shuttle launch carried to orbit three new satellites, RAFT-1, MARSCOM and ANDE, designed, built, and tested by the Midshipmen of the US Naval Academy's Satellite Laboratory in Annapolis, Maryland. After completing its primary mission of constuction of the International Space Station, the Shuttle crew is expected to deploy these satellites on December 20. The downlink for RAFT-1 and ANDE is on 145.825 MHz. MARSCOM will operate on Navy-Marine Corps MARS frequencies. December 17, 2006 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-351.07 GeneSat-1, the latest university cubesat, was successfully launched from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) at NASA Wallops Flight Facility on December 16, 2006 at 1200 hours UTC. It was a secondary payload aboard a Minotaur launch vehicle. Earlier GeneSat press releases mentioned 437.075 MHz and 437.100 MHz for the beacon frequency. Reception reports received from the USA, Japan, and southeast asia confirm that 437.075 MHz is being used. Many report the frequency seems to be 8-9 kHz below the published frequency. Transmissions from GeneSat are telemetry packets in AX.25 1200bps AFSK format. The GeneSat mission website at http://www.genesat1.org describes the satellite's mission and provides QSL information. Check out the rules for the telemetry reception contest on this site. Within hours after the launch the GeneSat Ops Team was reporting nominal power and thermal conditions. December 10, 2006 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-344.01 Space Shuttle Discovery was successfully launched on Saturday carrying to orbit three new satellites, RAFT-1, MARSCOM and ANDE designed, built, and tested by the Midshipmen of the US Naval Academy's Satellite Laboratory in Annapolis, Maryland. The RAFT-1 and ANDE satellite downlinks will be 145.825 MHz. The frequencies used by MARSCOM are on Navy-Marine Corps MARS frequen- cies. For full technical details please refer to: http://www.ew.usna.edu/%7Ebruninga/ande-raft-ops.html Another feature of the RAFT mission will allow amateur radio operators to listen to the signal as the satellite crosses the National Space Surveillance Network satellite radar tracking system. RAFT has a 216.98 MHz direct conversion receiver down to 145.825 MHz so you will hear the radar ping on RAFT's downlink. It will be a tone proportional to the Doppler as it flies through the radar fence, lasting about one second. GeneSat-1, a secondary payload aboard the Minotaur Launch Vehicle, will launch from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) at NASA Wallops Flight Facility on December 11, 2006, about 7:00am EST. The Minotaur launch window is 3 hours, 1200z-1500z. GeneSat-1 is a 10 x 10 x 30 cm. spacecraft, which will conduct a cellular biology technology demonstration. Of particular interest to the amateur radio satellite community, is the GeneSat-1 beacon. Operating at 437.075 MHz FM, the beacon sends an AX.25 packet every 5 seconds; the packet contains data about the spacecraft systems operation. The major objective of the SELENE mission is to acquire scientific data to answer key questions on the Moon's origin and evolution. It is the first fully-fledged lunar exploration project since the Apollo program. JAXA is collecting names and will have them etched on a sheet which is attached to the spacecraft. At present only Regions 2 and 3 have such an ITU allocation and here in Region 1, even terrestrial activity is only by footnote to the Radio Regulations or by national rule making. December 10, 2006 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-344.06 Recent legislation passed by Congress and signed by President Bush can help AMSAT raise the funds needed to build Eagle. The law, called the Pension Protection Act (PPA), includes a provision enabling AMSAT to raise substantially more money than might have been previously possible. However, time is short to take full advantage of this unique opportunity. Serious construction work must be funded this year to have Eagle ready to orbit by the target of 2009. Basically, here's the story on how the new law can help Eagle fly! The PPA provides that U.S. taxpayers with IRAs who have reached the age of 70-1/2, may contribute to qualified charities, part or all (up to $100,000 per year or $200,000 for married couples filing jointly), of the money they must annually withdraw from their IRAs. Thus, many AMSAT members and other supporters of the amateur radio space program have a marvelous opportunity to keep the Eagle project on track. If you must withdraw a certain amount from your IRA each year, there is a big advantage to making such withdrawals as direct contributions to AMSAT rather than merely receiving the distributions and then contributing in the usual manner. Under PPA, the amount you contribute directly is NOT counted as income and thus may put you into a lower tax bracket. It may also reduce the percentage of your Social Security income subject to taxation. Key provisions of the new legislation to keep in mind: 1. Donors must hold either a conventional or Roth IRA. 2. Donors must be at least 70-1/2 years of age. 3. Contributions must be made directly from the IRA to the charitable organization not to a donor- advised fund, private foundation, gift annuity or trust. 4. Donations may be made this year and next only, and must be made by December 31, 2006 and December 31, 2007. 5. The maximum amount a contributor may donate each year is $100,000. 6. Direct contributions to qualified charities from IRAs, in accordance with the PPA provisions, are NOT counted as taxable income. If you are 70-1/2 or older and have an IRA, you are in a position to take advantage of this potential windfall for the Eagle project. AMSAT urges you to first check with your tax advisor for specifics regarding your individual situation, then ask your IRA custodian to transfer to AMSAT part or all of what you are required to withdraw. Be sure to have this transfer completed before December 31st. A total of 16 QSOs were made via these satellites in 6 countries. Ramon, XE1KK - who had given many operators their first satellite QSO with the Galapagos finally worked HC8N via SO-50. Astronaut Participates in SKYWARN Recognition Day The National Weather Service (NWS) and the American Radio Relay League co-sponsored SKYWARN Recognition Day on Saturday, December 2 to thank those hams who volunteer to act as storm spotters and who are trained in emergency communications. The activity called for Amateur Radio perators to exchange contact information, including a short weather report for their location, with as many NWS stations as possible. Mike Lopez-Alegria, KE5GTK, took part in the activities and was heard speaking to hams in Texas. 5. ARRL Story on ARISS Mentor The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a story on Barry Cohen, K2JV. Cohen mentored the Salt Brook Elementary School Amateur Radio on the ISS contact in New Providence, New Jersey, in June of this year and was recently named “Amateur of the Year.” See: http://www.arrl.org/?artid=6981 6. ARRL Article on Shuttle STS-116 Crew The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a story covering the upcoming shuttle launch which will carry ham astronauts Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, and Christer Fugelsang, KE5CGR/SA0AFS. ARRL QST Articles The December issue of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) QST ran an article, "Civilian Space Traveler and Astronauts Pull Off ARISS Triple Header". Another story, "Kids Day June 2007", summarized ARRL's on-the-air operating event for kids.
