(I posted this a couple of days ago, but it was never released from
amsat.org limbo. So I resend. My order for OLPC went in today -- they
accept either PayPal or plastic -- Tom)
Another thing I gleaned from the OLPC wiki is that it supports FORTH
(start at http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Forth_Lesson_0).
Karl (DJ4ZC) designed Phase-3A back in the late 1970's and the onboard
computer (IHU) used the computer language that Karl wrote called IPS
(Interpreter for Process Structures) based on FORTH, but with German
syntax and multi-tasking real-time support. Several of us (W0PN, W1HDX,
ZL1WN, DB2OS & I) ported the German "dialect" of IPS into English and
the "Gerglish" IPS has served as the basis for running all the Phase-3
IHUs up thru AO-40 (thanks to the efforts of W4SM and G3RUH). IPS is
also planned for P3-E (N4HY already has it running on the new IHU) and
probably P5.
As another possible AMSAT/OLPC synergy, I can easily envision the OLPC
Forth kernel being adapted to real-time control tasks with the addition
of Karl's "chain".
Although it is really modest compared to the normal laptop, Nick
Negroponte and his team has really come up with a platform that has
amazing possibilities!
Meanwhile, ASUS has introduced their commercial Linux-based "Eee"
miniature notebook that is already available ($399 from Amazon
<http://www.google.com/pagead/iclk?sa=l&ai=BuJiyAGg3R9XlK4iaeuyDjLIMqprePM7t…>)
-- Just Google ASUS Eee

Hi!
I will be part of the AMSAT table at the Superstition Amateur Radio Club's
hamfest in Mesa, Arizona, tomorrow morning. The hamfest is at Mesa
Community College, on Dobson Road between Southern Avenue and the
US-60 freeway (exit 177). The club has a web page with hamfest info at:
http://wb7tjd.org/hamfest/
I will be doing AO-51 demonstrations during the 1515 and 1649 UTC passes
from the hamfest as WD9EWK, weather permitting. It is currently (Friday at
2020 UTC) raining here, and there is a chance for rain tomorrow morning.
Unless the hamfest site turns into a swamp and/or there is lightning in the
sky tomorrow morning, I hope to be on for both of those passes.

Speaking of satellite DX,
I don't know if I've seen a messge about this or not.
There is a group of folks down at XF4 Revilla Gigedo for
at least a week now. XF4YW (XE2YW) has been on the
FM birds from time to time. They will be there for several
more days.
That would be grid DK48 off the west coast of Mexico.

I'd recommend the Yaesu FT-847 over the Icom for these reasons:
1. The 847 has 160M thru 70cm in one box. This means that when AO7
comes up in mode A, you don't have to use a separate rig for the 10M
downlink. You'll have all the other bands as well, 160, 80, 60, 40, 30,
20, 17, 15, 12, 10, & 6 meters, as well as 2 meters and 70cm
2. The 847, which is out of production, can be had for much less money
than an IC910. I got mine for about $850. I typically see 910's
selling used, without the 1.2GHz option, for about $1,000.
3. You can more easily find and install a different mike on an 847,
since they don't require a special type of mike.
4. The IC910s I've dealt with tend to develop a situation where the
displayed frequency does not match the actual frequency. 2 meters is
usually about 3 KHz off while 70cm gets about 9 KHz off. This can get
nasty to use for someone who's not familiar with the rig.
5. CAT control of the rig is as simple as running a null-modem cable
from the back of the rig to a serial port on your computer. The 910H
requires a CTV or whatever they call it to interface to your computer.
6. While it doesn't have a 1.2GHz option, you can still use a
transverter, which tends to be much less expensive than the Icom 1.2GHz
optional unit.
7. It is also packet-ready, as well as all the other digital modes.
8. DSP filtering is built-in and comes standard.
9. Less menu driven than the Icom unit.
In short, the 847 is more versatile, easier to interface with the rest
of your station, and less expensive than the Icom.

Other than my old Drake B-line twins with the 2-meter transmit and
receive converters (think RS-10/11, RS-12/13, and RS-15), I have only
used the Icom IC-275/475H combo and the 910H. After borrowing a 910 for
Field Day one year, I immediately went out and bought my own. I didn't
even look at anything else, and I love it. Sensitive RX, plenty of TX
power when needed, 1.2 GHz with the optional UX-910, easy to interface
to the computer, 9600 packet-ready, and great for terrestrial work as
well. I have the DSP and high-stability options in mine, as well.

I believe it is true that many countries do not allow operation near 432. I have also heard it is questionable here in the USA. While in mode A (AO7) I have made several attempts to shake loose a JA or some northern UK gent where I have a very short window at times, even a piece of Europe for some footprint streaching fun. In the days of RS15 I was able to do this fairly regularly and had many sub 4 degree QSO's to the other side of the footprint. It takes good and quick operation and a competent guy at the other end. My opinion is," if this were easy, everyone would be doing it". Generally speaking we all love a challange, at least that's what keeps my passion for amateur radio alive. I have a fantastic mentor in Joe K0VTY as well a Clair VE3NPC both of whom have forgot more that I can ever learn. There's
Central and northern South america of which I have hever hear a peep out of. I had a new aquantnce in the shack yesterday who was considering satellites. AO7 (mode A) came up through the mid west and I had a nice chat with Joe K3SZH ( who I think probably owes the bird hihi). This visitor just lite up , like the perverbial bug latched on. Can we get a front page blurb in QST on the assets of AO7? This is what got me going back in the days of RS10 and 12/13. When I'm on the HF bands at times I will "steer" the converation to satellies and attempt to simplify this "complex" mode that many believe it is. It is incumbenton all of us to "push" this fantastic method.

Greetings,
Anyone have a Daiwa CN-520 SWR meter they'd be willing to sell? It's the small (2 3/4' square) meter for HF with no controls on the front and 200 watt and 2000 watt scales. I'd like to build it into a tuner.
Tnx and 73,
Tony, N2UN
