Steve,
I have both a commercial and a homebrew Eggbeater and am disappointed with both, especially in light of its rather high price. Connected to my IC-7000 via an ARR mast-mounted preamp, performance is far less than with an HT and an Arrow. Guess an omni can't cut it, at least not from my QTH.
Maybe if I could get it up higher, clear of all roofs, it would do better. I can make contacts at relatively high sat elevations, but can do just as well with a $10 dual band ground plane. My friend has an Eggbeater and the same preamp at a clearer QTH, and he hears substantially better, down to 10 degrees elevation in some directions.
Good luck and 73,
Bill NZ5N

We have met the enemy and they are us. WE need to do something. Yes, $15m is
outta reach, but isn't there a cash prize for the first on-commercial moon
landing?

I couldn't agree more - we don't need more of the same.
If I want to sit back and have a two hour rag-chew with someone on the other
side of the planet I will use Skype or my cell phone!
Dreaming about what *might* be in space is a fun exercise. Actually doing
something about it requires sending things to LEO because reality has
dictated that's as far as we can afford to go.
How's about we use some of that frustrated *imagineering* to come up with
interesting new concepts at LEO? We don't need any more FM repeaters buzzing
overhead, but what about more cameras downloading HD images, scientific
payloads that monitor the ongoing climate change, payloads to study the
Earth's magnetic field, etc. etc. Our own 'Twitter' messaging network from
space...?
The Apollo 13 creed of "failure is not an option" has completely infected
the brains at AMSAT and this list. You want something at HEO or on the moon,
cut a check for $15 million dollars and let's get on with it. Been waiting
since 1996 for another AO-13 and I am getting too old to keep waiting.
AMSAT is becoming completely irrelevant as it strives without success for
the impossible mission and exhibits a shocking amount of leadership
malfesance as it stubbornly refuses to recognize and adapt to realities in
the launch business.
I know, I know maybe NEXT year someone rich will die and leave us a boatload
of cash. Or the bankrupt US government will suddenly cough up a billion
dollars for some orbiting emergency communication system. In the meantime we
have to stifle the truth because it might blow yet another *secret* deal
that's in the works and *almost* a done deal, so let's not complain publicly
and ruin it.
Heard the stories, heard the lies, got all the t-shirts and ball caps.
Whatever.

Has anyone had luck with transporting an HT on a commercial flight in
their carry on luggage recently? I doubt I'd have much luck with
transporting an arrow antenna in my carry on. Any thoughts?

Drew,
No problem but I feel you are way overreacting to all of this. It was just a message about
a schedule. Nothing more, nothing less. YOU AND AMSAT WANT CREDIT???
ATTENTION ALL AMSAT !!!! AMSAT SHOULD HAVE FULL CREDIT FOR THE AO-51 SCHEDULE I REPOSTED. PLEASE
FORGIVE ME FOR OMITTING A LINE IN THE ORIGINAL SCHEDULE! :-( IF I OFFENDED ANY NEW
UP AND COMING USER OF THE BIRDS, PLEASE FORGIVE ME. :-( I WILL NEVER REPOST A MESSAGE OR
BULLETIN AGAIN WITHOUT FULL CREDIT AND I WILL NOT OMIT ANY LINES GOING FORWARD.
I GUESS I DON'T HAVE COMMON SENSE LIKE DREW!!!

DID I MISS SOMETHING?????
Yes. I'd prefer you not edit the AO-51 schedule and distribute it to the -bb before the command team, that's all. If you quote someone else's work or news item, quote it in it's original form, and credit the source. Seems pretty common sense to me.

We got all the files we needed downloaded this last pass, and since Jim
is still out and about, I turned the repeater on along with the digital
downlink. Sorry for the crossed wires, but it is now on, and will stay
on throughout the close approach tomorrow.

I just received a message from the US Joint Space Operations Center
warning that AO-51 will have a close approach to another satellite,
FORMOSAT 3-D, tomorrow morning at 1056 UTC. This just happens to be over
the Eastern US. Predicted miss distance is 953 meters, which is over
3000 feet. Here are the latest elements sets for both satellites:
AMSAT ECHO
1 28375U 04025K 10058.90048627 .00000037 00000-0 23393-4 0 6144
2 28375 098.0572 058.6452 0085064 068.7648 292.2602 14.40671174297770
FORMOSAT 3D
1 29050U 06011D 10059.05265027 .00001102 00000-0 26646-3 0 4565

On this afternoon's pass I will shut off the S band transmitter and turn
on the digital downlink at 2 watts, with telemetry transmitted every 5
seconds. If everything goes ok and we are still in one piece, we'll get
the repeater back on by tomorrow night. Telemetry collected tomorrow
morning during the approach is welcome to ko4ma(a)amsat.org.
Let's not panic, 953 meters is a long way apart, but it's worth paying
close attention during the approach. Good Luck AO-51.

I have never had any problems taking my Arrow in my checked-in luggage to Russia, the EU or Belarus. see http://www.andythomas.eu
But Russia, Ukraine and Belarus require a customs declaration about "high frequency radios" so I have always used local hams' radios for the fm satellites in these countries.
Within the EU I take the handheld with me in carry-on luggage with a full battery to be able to switch it on, and at check in tell the airline I'm happy to show it to the pilot (or anyone else!!). I separate the battery from the HT for the xray and offer to connect and switch on if asked.
I carry a full licence with me and I have a photocopy licence in my checked-in luggage, the first thing you would see when it's opened, and the luggage is unlocked.
