As Tom points out, these $100 laptops-per-child mass produced for every kid on the planet should be the ham-radio target machine for just about everything we do. I can think of no better investment in ham radio, than making sure our stuff can run on these machines. And thereby get kids involved in HAM radio. As they come, they have 802.11g wireless for a self-building network from nothing. Out of the box, they will network, and the ads say, the 802.11 is more powerful than conventional wireless lans. Ham radio can bring some RF expertise to these networks. Because the laptop is supposed to be able to form this peer-to-peer social network throughtout a villiage as is. We can add some longer links... My first thought is a USB PSK-31 device that links that laptop, not just to he next hut in the villiage, but can use 5W radios on PSK-31 to reach the world. I think the target power for the whole laptop is around 1 watt. So it can be recharged on solar power. This thing just jumps out at me as a fundamental building block for ad-hoc emergnecy comms and funn coms and just about everything else we do with ham radio. Then we overlay on top of that, all the neat things we do in ham radio. As tom points, out, AMSATS etc. (And of course APRS) Winlink and all our other EMCOMM toys... Of course until they get to the millions of quantities, they are now costing $200 each, and you have to buy two for a total of $400 to get yours (the other one goes to a kid)... But its a great way to get one... and start developing code... Actually get two (4), so you can play both ends... WB4APR, Bob

I would like to draw attention to a unique occurance that I have noticed today and last night... I was sitting on 144.200.0 usb with spectran running on the compy for no good reason, when suddenly i noticed a carrier sweeping down through my scope. By itself, this would be nothing special, BUT I recognized a pattern: the sweep rate was not linear, but resembled that of doppler-shift from a passing LEO satellite! it started out at one rate, then got faster as it passed through my IF, and past zero-beat. I retuned down, and continued to observe it become slower, finally fading-out rather abruptly while still sweeping down at a slower rate. I could not find any reason why any terrestrial signal might do this, so I looked through my list of sats on Orbitron, to see if there was any hardware that had passed recently. I noticed that "PEHUENSAT-1[+]" had JUST LOS my horizon on it's ascending orbit, and had been almost directly overhead a few minutes before. I made a mental note, and decided to check again on a future pass to see if it happened again, just to rule-out other possibilities. Sure enough, this morning on orbit # 4414, I was again, monitoring 144.200.0 usb and doing other tasks when I looked over at the PC and saw the same pattern. A check of Orbitron, showed that PO-63 just SO happens to be almost LOS decending from overhead. This brings a question which begs to be answered: How can this signal seem to be coming from this satellite? As far I as I can tell by searching google, the satellite is no longer functioning. could it be a reflection of a terrestrial signal, or could it be generated somehow by a malfunctioning onboard transmitter? Folks, Just a bit ago AO51 passed over my QTH (grid EN52) at an elevation of 57, I was able to hear my very first voice downlink on my mobile rig. I did not want to try and TX as it was too exciting just to hear traffic. I did not record the pass audio so I cannot even remember the call signs that I heard. I just know I heard something! I can't wait for the my birthday present now from the family next week, a new Arrow satellite antenna. I can see the problem Bob mentions with the solar illumination. I can't quite make out if there is just one side out of 6 with 32 cells or if it has 2 sides with solar panels. Mike's observations are in line with my own observations--telemetry from AO-16 appears to be quite random in its current status. It's going to take a while to get the software uploaded and then running (assuming it's healthy enough to do so), so hang in there. Once we get that done (a few weeks is a likely time frame, or maybe longer) we'll have it sending telemetry at regular intervals again. When you do get telemetry, please send it to the address posted yesterday. Thanks for listening! Listening to AO-16s wonderful modulated carrier as she flies by in the hope of downloading some TLM for guys, but, there doesnt seem to be many periods of TLM being sent. I heard only two bursts at near LOS when it was over Greenland. What is the period of time between TLM transmissions ? 73, Dave.

SATPC32 multiple satellite display

Greetings, I have used SATPC32 for some time and have it working just fine on a Vista Home Premium platform laptop. Originally when installed on Vista I installed verison 12.6 and when +M (multiple satellite display) was selected I would get all my selected satellites displayed. However, I one time I changed to a NOAA selection configuation and then back to my HAMsat original, but lost the multiple satellite display in the process. Only the current selected satellite shows. I upgraded recently to 12.7 and multiple satellites were back until I changed the satellite configuation to another satellite group and returned to my HAMsat group. Now multiple satellite display is not working again. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? There is not much in the documentation on this topic to help me debug. Yes, I have +M currently selected as well as the load on start box checked in the configuration dialog box. Thanks for any insights on this. By using WIDEn-N at least now there is some emforcement of lower rates, however, it does not thing to reduce jamming on the uplink. Because if they dont get-it, they just don't get-it and then send harder and more often, just making it imposssible for anyone else. Satellite Predictions

Hello, I am brand new to satellites and just getting interested. I downloaded and using a satellite tracking program called Orbitron, Yes I realize it is an old program but the cost was free and until I make a decision to get really involved in satellites I frankly did not want to put out any money at this time. That being said, my problem is that even though both the Orbitron software and the AMSAT on-line pass predictions have the same Lat/Long entered I get different data ???? The times are within 5 minutes of each but the Azm and Elv are way different. Is there anybody out there using Orbitron tracking software that I could check with to be sure I have it set up correctly ? I am assuming the AMSAT on-line predictions are correct ? AO-16 partially recovered.

After being off the air for several months, I'm happy to announce that AO-16 has been partially recovered and is transmitting on 437.026 Mhz. The satellite was recovered to the boot loader by Mark Hammond N8MH with guidance from Bruce Rahn WB9ANQ and others. Further reloading of the satellite is underway. The AO-16 team could use your help collecting the binary MBL telemetry for now, and the regular telemetry once the reload is completed. If you receive any telemetry from AO-16, please submit it (preferably as a .KSS file attachment) to telemetry AT quagliana DOT com and put the words "AO-16 Telemetry" in the subject of your email. (I'm re-posting this from yesterday because somehow it got lost in route to the AMSAT-BB web site -- Tom) Some of you may have heard about the efforts of Nick Negroponte (MIT Professor, brother of the Top Spook) to develop a really low-cost computer (the target is $100, but they are just at the $200 level now) intended to bring modern technology to children in 3rd world countries. As I understand, their initial target audience is in Peru. More about their program and plans can be read at http://www.laptop.org/vision/index.shtml. All the software is to be developed open source (see http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_on_open_source_software) I noted in Time Magazine a month or two back that they planned an initial "public" release with an offer that if you buy two, you get one to keep and the other goes to a foreign school. Tonite I got this announcement from them announcing that this campaign begins next Monday. Of the $399 you contribute, $200 is a 501c3 deductible item. I can imagine AMSAT developing several "Space Cadet" software packages for the OLPC (see http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Content ). I can also imagine the OLPC serving as a terminal for the ACP (Advanced Communications Package) for Eagle/Phase 4, especially for the Emergency Communications application. FYI -- The O/S specs are based on Fedora LINUX, running Python, Java, Csound, Squeak & Logo (see http://www.laptop.org/en/laptop/software/specs.shtml ).
