Source for L-Band Preamplifier and Bias Tee?

Hello, I am looking for a Low Noise Preamplifier for L Band and a Bias Tee. Down East Microwave seems to be closed for the summer. I was looking at one of their 1296 MHz Preamps and wonder if it could work outside the band, like at 1090 MHz. I got a 1569 MHz preamplifier for GOES but do not have a Bias Tee to try it. The ones I saw were either for up to 1 GHz, or for up to 40+ GHz ($$$). I got a WinRadio WR-LNA-1500 at Dayton but I did not get a chance to really try it. The WR-LNA-1500 managed to fry two of my receiver's front-ends then destroyed itself when I ran it off of vehicle power. This was before I realized what was going on. The US WinRadio Service Center is checking with Australia HQ to see if they fix that model. So I would rather not buy the Winradio Bias Tee just in case there are more problems. Are there any surplus places that sell Bias Tees? I can deal with SMA connectors. I tried searching for kits or construction articles for preamplifiers but only found some stuff overseas. Do I have to wait for DEM to reopen? 73 Eric

Bias Tees

Hello, all I have a small quantity of AVCOM DCP-66 Bias Tees (power inserters) that are rated from 25~1500MHz. Solid aluminum block with a feedthrough cap and ground post for DC. Most of them have female "F" connectors on the input and output, but I changed a few of them to female "TNC". These were surplus from an Earth Station I helped rebuild, and were used to send DC up the coax to commercial LNB's with a 950~1450MHz output. I use one to power my S-Band downconverter, and it works fine. $25 each, shipping included. Contact me off-list if interested. 73, Jim KQ6EA

APRIL 2007 posting: I saw that you are (were) looking for a Nanaboshi connector. I found the Ohio distributor for their connectors and got what I needed in a onesy-twosey batch. I ended up ordering 2 male and 2 female so I could take the rotor out of the tower and test it at the ground. The connectors cost me about 12 bucks each. Keith - SHoudl be a Faq on AMSAT web page (or a page dedicated to az-elevation rotators) The conenctors are made by Nanaboshi. Here is Wayne Estes 2003 post / answer: Bernie K3BAZ located a PDF drawing of the various Nanaboshi connector configurations. The drawing helps identify the correct part numbers for two other useful connectors. So now I have enough confidence to order the following connectors: NJC-207-PF Inline cable connector, plug housing shell, female pins. This is the cable connector that plugs into the G-5500 motor housing. Use this to make a spare set of rotor cables for field day, or if you got a used motor with no cable connector. The group order is up to 50 connectors so far, which makes the price $7.15 each from the distributor. I will ask for $9 each to cover the cost of shipping to me, padded envelope, and postage to you. NJC-207-RM Panel-mount connector, receptacle housing shell, male pins. This is the connector on the G-5500 motor housing. Price is $3.19 each from the distributor. I will ask for $5 each to cover the cost of shipping to me, padded envelope, and postage to you. NJC-207-AdM Inline cable connector, receptacle housing shell, male pins. This could be used to "connectorize" old G-5400 motors with a pigtail cable that mates with G-5500 cables. The distributor doesn't have a price for this, but they say they could get a price in one day. It would probably cost about the same as the PF connector. Let me know if anybody wants the RM or AdM connectors. There is no need to tell me again how many PF connectors you want. I will hold off until at least Friday to place the order. All of these must be ordered from Japan with a 3+ week lead time. If anyone copied GO32 data on the 0130 pass July 11th (UTC) please let me know. I was not able to but had a very high noise level at the time and am testing our equipment for proper set-up. In general feedback of the health of the satellite in terms of consistent signal would be appreciated. It might be an issue on my end but I have copied very little data from GO-32 since its reported return to action, at either UF's station or the home QTH. Hi All, This is a reminder that I'll be working the FM sats AO-51, AO-27, and SO-50 from Saturday afternoon 7/19 to Thursday morning 7/19. 7/14 is a travel day which will have me mobile through CN79, CO70, and CN69. I'll be in CN69 for the majority of the time and possibly CO60 if we venture that way. On Thursday 7/19, we will travel back from CN69, to CO70 to CN79. After this point I'll be in Seattle which won't be rare at all. If you work me, I'll QSL if QSL'd. It'll be hard for me to log contacts from my experience in visiting CN70 awhile back. L/S, Rube Goldberg style!

I was on L/S tonight, albeit in an unusual fashion. My S dish is sitting in the garage with a broken feed, so I was restricted to listening on my Transystem and corner reflector from the front yard. I use an F6A HT to receive with, powered by a lead acid 2Ah battery stuck in my back pocket. I _really_ wanted to make a QSO, but the mike cord doesn't reach from the shack to the yard! I remembered my Icom 910H has a VOX feature. Hmmmm. It's hooked up to a PC running SatPC32 and hooked to a 24 element 1.2 yagi at 25 feet. I made up a new pair for the doppler file in SatPC32 that listened on a UHF simplex frequency, and transmitted on the L band uplink after doppler correction. I turned VOX on and laid the mike on the top of the rig near the speaker. Made a best guess at volume control, kerchunked it a few times and out to the yard I went about 2 minutes before AOS. I took my D7A out with me tuned to the simplex frequency I'd picked and started listening with the Transystem and the F6A. I heard Alan WA4SCA almost immediately. Doing my best Apollo inspired VOX-opening "ahhhh...KO4MA"... I'll be a monkey's uncle it worked! Alan and I had a nice chat until my speaker plug came out partway and the F6A thought I was trying to program it. I restablished the downlink after a minute or three and listened to Alan and N8BBQ chat until LOS. Anyways...just a note describing how things happen around the shack here at KO4MA sometimes ;-) 73, Drew KO4MA

s-band for cheap?

hi everyone as some of you might know I'm a little cash strapped as I'm trying to do everything off a student budget. I'd like to be able to get onto the s-band downlink for AO-51 and some of those future birds that are coming...however it would appear that it is a little cost inhibitive. All the converter/transverters I found seem to be in the $300-$400 and i just don't have the money to do that. Will I just have to only work the birds when they're in v/u or is there a cheap way to do things? thanks -Steve VA3SAX

Mounting Elevation part of g-5500

Quick question on mounting a g-5500 elevation router. Does it matter which way you mount it or can you set the controller to know where it is? This is a little hard to explain, but I want to mount it so the mass of the controller is horizontal to the ground, not vertical like when the az/el are package together. If I do this, will I be able to set the antennas somehow so the controller knows where they are or does it determine that on its own? If I mount it wrong and the controller can not be told where it is (ie. calibrated) then all of my degrees would be off by 90 because I am mounting the elevation portion horizontal instead of vertical. I hope this question makes sense, but I don't want to assemble it all up high and then findout it doesn't work as planned. Thanks for any input! Mike kb8zgl

Haruo Yoneda

This morning I received a phone call from Yuri Yoneda, Harry's (Haruo) daughter. Harry, JA1ANG, has been in the hospital for several months. He feel and broke a bone in his leg. While in the hospital he contracted Pneumonia 3 times. He is still in the hospital and the prognosis is not good. Harry who is 88 served on the AMSAT Board of Directors. 73- Martha

coax patch after the LMR 600

Hi All I am getting my new 30 ft tower and wish to changeover from RG213 to LMR600 I have, for the Vhf and Uhf cross yagis. Will be installing my masthead preamp too and its going to be convinient to use a short length of thinner coax patch upto the Beams near the AZEL. AO-51 mode LS!

All, Worked the next full pass in mode LS. AI7W was on with a great signal, and N7DRB(?) called a couple of times, but seemed to be in the noise. With fixed CP on the downlink, and linear uplink, I have noticed excellent signals, but with some short term spin QSB related to the aspect of the SC. As expected, putting LS together gives the product of the two. Works great, and not so crowded that you can't have a nice QSO! Alan WA4SCA

Mounting The G-5500 elevation rotor in any way other than vertical will cause problems as the condensate will not have a way to get out and will ruin the unit. The coordination with actual direction is easy as it just involves pointing the antenna correctly after mounting the unit any way you do. I am not sure if another drain hole drilled would solve the problem of drainage. Incidentally if it is a new unit, please do replace all the bolts holding the two halves together with SS Allen Key type bolts as after sitting in the open the regular screws are very difficult to remove with a regular screwdriver- I have had practical experience on this! As far as "setting" the antenna position, the controller doesn't care how the rotor itself is mounted: when the rotor is at the zero degree limit of its travel, you mount your antennas pointing at the horizon, and you have established the zero degree position. I just finished the 03:30z pass here. I heard a couple of partial calls on the 2401.200+/- ghz downlink - VE7C?? and another partial suffix. The pass started with someone with a nice clear signal and a Spanish/Mexican accent. There was a call sign, but I didn't catch it. However, I was not able to get into the bird myself on 1268.700 +/-. Not even a change in static, even right after I heard an apparent full-quieting "kerchunk". This is with my new and unproven helix antenna, so I have one too many unknowns here to know what the problem is. I did follow the same doppler process on the L-band uplink, and also swept the general vicinity, so that shouldn;t have been the problem, and the pass peaked at about 50 degrees. Nothing back from my uplink. Anybody else have a go at it? Only a 10 degree pass, but off in a favorable direction (no trees). Downlink carrier was very weak and barely there, if at all. Keying up on 1268 had no effect, as before, though I doubt I would have heard anything even if it had.. Anybody having success?
