2007 AMSAT Space Symposium and Annual Meeting - Call for papers This is the third call for papers for the 2007 AMSAT Space Symposium and Annual Meeting to be held October 25-28, 2007 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The September 1, 2007 deadline for submitting electronic versions of papers for inclusion in the printed symposium proceedings to Dan Schultz is rapidly approaching. Proposals for papers, symposium presentations, and poster presentations are invited on any topic of interest to the amateur satellite program. An emphasis for this year is an educational outreach to middle and high school students. In particular, papers on the following topics are solicited: Students & Education, ARISS, AO-51, P3E, Eagle and other satellite-related topics. ARRL dual moxon turnstyle project questions

I'm working on building the ARRL dual moxon antennas, but the article isn't very detailed where I'd like it to be and a little over detailed in some places I wish it weren't. If you want to look, this is the URL (http://www.arrl.org/members-only/tis/info/pdf/0108038.pdf) 1. What are acceptable ways to terminate the paralled 75 ohm matching sections? I'm thinking now I'll just terminate them to a couple of ring terminals attached to the mast rather than terminating each one with a bnc and teeing them. 2. How do I feed the 70cm and 2m with the same feedline? should I just tee a 50 ohm line to two equal length 50 ohm sections? 3. This is more of a comment... I'm wagering the uhf version doesn't work at all... measurements are given to the hundreth of an inch - and then you solder a big ring lug to the end of it! 4. Are there any other good techniques for setting the distance between the reflector and driver besides heat shrink? The 70cm antenna is using #14 galvanized wire, and I can't think of anything small enough to hold them in place well. I found that the 3/16 rod for the 2m moxon will work great with 1/4" nylon tubing. Thanks for any feedback - I'll probably have more questions.. I'm sitting here with a half-made 70cm turnstyle, and am about to start on the 2m version. Whew - I'm beginning to think that a $1000 investment in rotators and antennae isn't such a bad idea after all! Scott Wilson NW2S

GS-232B with Nova

Has anyone used the GS-232B/G-5500 combo with Nova? Are there any issues, pitfalls, problems or work-arounds with the set-up and calibration in Nova? I am going to be setting-up one of these systems tomorrow. Others have tried and have not been able to properly calibrate and operate the rotor to track satellites. I do not know what their exact problems are but I will see for myself tomorrow. Also, this set-up will be using a laptop and a USB-to-serial converter. Contacting Satellites

Hello All: I am just starting in satellite contact. I can do the FM sats. AO-27, AO-51 and SO-50. But I would like to try more on AO-7 for example What radio do you use? Like Icom 706, Yaesu 897 or 857? Also how do you setup for doppler shift for like AO-7? Is it like for FM where transmit stays the same and receive changes from AOS to LOS? Thanks, Ron/K5AI

Hi All a small group of satellite enthusiasts in the East Midlands of England are planning to operate a Special event (GB) station to celebrate the forthcoming 50th anniversary of the worlds first Earth orbiting satellite SPUTNIK ONE from 3rd October for one month, details to follow later on. Portable Operations from FM18uo

I'll be headed to FM18 for the weekend and I threw my FT-51R, my arrow antenna, and my tripod in the trunk of the car. I just mapped out all the passes for SO-50, AO-27, and AO-51 (V/U mode) and calculated passes that were during my "awake" hours and that were at least 20-degrees above the horizon at maximum (not saying I won't try the others) and came up with this list: 04Aug07 | 14:35z | SO-50 04Aug07 | 18:54z | AO-27 04Aug07 | 20:33z | AO-27 05Aug07 | 13:22z | AO-51 05Aug07 | 15:05z | SO-50 05Aug07 | 18:27z | AO-27 I'll try to be on the air on these passes short of being in a kayak or in the pool at the time. :) Hope to hear you guys. 73s, Eric W4OTN AMSAT Area Coordinator
