AO-27 4 grid Operation 8Nov09

Yesterday I took a short 40 minute drive to the intersection of 4 grid squares, EN80, 81, 90 and 91. The intersection is in a field in back of the Pilot Truck Stop on I-71 at Ohio SR83. The EN90/91 line runs through the Pilot parking lot and the 4 corner intersection is about 400' off the pavement. The weeds and thistles were quite high and attached themselves to shoes and clothing. Other than that, it is an easy place to operate from. I made 26 qsos with 25 different stations on the two afternoon AO-27 passes. The western pass was very crowded so not many qso's. A special QSL card has been designed and will be sent to everyone in the log. No return card necessary. You can see the design on my qrz.com page. These are not rare grids but it was my first time operating from a 4 corner intersection. If you are looking for a change, try operating from another grid. It doesn't have to be rare for you to have fun doing it. Use Google Earth to scope out potential sites. Pack up your equipment and head out! 73, John K8YSE

Road trip this weekend

Hi all, My visit Thursday thru Sunday to my friends lake house in EM46 just finished. With a little Geo Cache trip Friday and a road trip Saturday afternoon, I worked quite a few stations from EM35, EM36, EM37, EM46 and EM47. As a few stations have already done, if you worked me and want a QSL, please send me an email with the date(s) and time(s) of our contact and I will be glad to send you a card. You can get some real strange looks from the locals driving by at night, with an ELK and HT laying on the hood and a Laptop display glowing in the vehicle in the middle of nowhere. I've tried to decipher the callsigns from the two recordings of the 8 Nov USA passes that Johan Papay posted, and subsequently mapped the callsigns on a Google Map. It would probably be more utilitarian for the HRD developer to fix the problems with the software first, namely getting Doppler tuning to work with an 817, before taking on a project like this.

Just for fun I attempted to hear SO-67 on the 1416UTC pass this morning. It was orbit 790 with a max elevation of 79 degrees. I was using my TH-F6A with stock rubber duck antenna. A few minutes into the pass out of the noise came the signal. For this minimal setup signals were rather strong. I knew I would have no problem hearing the bird with my crossed yagis on the tower but I wanted to see how I could push the minimalist envelope with just a stock ht. I was pleasantly surprised with the strong signals. Congratulations to amsat sa etc on a fine new addition to the amateur satellite service. Dave Marthouse N2AAM dmart(a)pure.net
