AMSAT UK Shop under new management

After several years of running the AMSAT-UK shop, Jim G3WGM has handed the reins to Ciaran Morgan M0XTD. Ciaran obtained his full license in April 2008 and enjoyed organising a very successful ARISS contact between Budbrooke School in Warwick, England and Richard Garriott K5KWQ whilst he was onboard the International Space Station in October 2008. The AMSAT-UK shop has been an important source of funds in the past and Ciaran is revamping the current shop to help it to continue to make a valuable contribution to the funds into the future. The shop has had a policy of only stocking items that are difficult to obtain in the UK and, initially, that policy will remain whilst Ciaran gets familiar with the stock and identifies other possible options. Suggestions are always welcome and a new email address (amsat-uk-shop(a)amsat.org) has been setup. Please send the suggestions in and keep checking the web site for updates. Due to the level of sales of software, and compatibility issues with the more recent Microsoft Operating Systems, it has been decided to stop selling InstantTrack and QuickTrack. WiSP and SatPC32 licenses will continue to be issued from the shop Also, there are currently no books for sale - we are looking at this but suggestions are always welcome. On the hardware front, we have restocked with the ever popular LVB motherboards and we also have a limited number of complete kits for the LVB Tracker unit. Half of the new kits also include the AMSAT-NA enclosure with compatible display unit! We are also investigating restocking the 2.4GHz signal sources from G0MRF and the G7HIA 2.4GHz patch kits - please keep a watch on the website for more details. CP6 received at last...

Hi all, Finally succeeded to copy and record CP6 CW beacon. The digital mode sounds difficult to inercept, as it is very short, imediately following the CW transmission, and appears only every 30 seconds,which i think makes it impossible to manually tune on the SSB signal. In addition, when using SatPC auto Doppler compensation (programming the IC910H via CAT), the received frequency "jumps"every 1 second. As far as I remember, this rate can not be changed. I guess that updating the transceiver every 100mS would make the audio pitch much more constant and smooth. I will try later on to activate CalPoly's parsing software. Computer control of Alliance U-100 and similar rotors

Very cool, my first homebrew project in 20 years appears to be a complete success (knock on wood). For about $65, I was able to build a modified version of the K8DAV U-100 Rotor controller, and now my Elk antenna turns automatically and follows the satellites during each pass. My particular rotor is the Alliance HIR, which is electrically the same as the U-83 and the U-98, and which I bought for $25. The K8DAV controller for these rotors is the same as the one for the U-100, except for the value of the motor start capacitor. The U-110 takes the same capacitor as the U-100. This was a fun weekend project and a very useful addition to my satellite setup. I picked up two of the most expensive parts, the transfomers, for $1 each at the Goodwill store, in the basket of assorted wall-warts in the electronics section (bring a VOM and test the wall-wart before purchasing). You could also use the transformer and capacitor from the rotor's original controller, but I was afraid to cannibalize it without being sure I could get the new one to work. Otherwise, the project box was $18, the Basic Stamp board was about $20, and the solid state relays were $7 each on eBay. All other parts were inexpensive. DJ-G7T and full-duplex satellite operating

Hi! I spent this afternoon using my new DJ-G7T HT on a few passes, with mixed results. Working with the incomplete manual that came with the HT has been a challenge. I still need to use it more, and be ready to make more changes to settings. So far, I'll say it is a good radio for satellite work. Not great, but good. I first tried this HT on the satellites during the weekend of the Dayton HamVention. The first report I received on it related to my transmit audio - sounding quiet and compressed. There is a mic gain setting in the firmware, which I put to the maximum setting. Over this weekend, I received the EDS-10 speaker/mic adapter cable to go into the speaker/mic jack on the top of the HT - a 4-conductor 1/8" (3.5mm) plug with threads around the base of the plug. Without this cable, I did not want to risk trying full-duplex operation on the birds. With this, I could feed audio through a splitter to my earpiece and audio recorder. I tried AO-27 and SO-50 passes this (Monday) afternoon around 2120- 2140 UTC. The 5W transmitter and change to the mic gain setting meant I could be heard, but I had difficulties hearing the satellite. Also, I could not hear myself while transmitting. I tried another AO-27 pass at 2301 UTC, and part of the pass was covered up by a loud bout of intermod (Phoenix Fire Department VHF dispatch channel swamped the receiver). Not good. Before the first AO-51 pass I had this afternoon at 0027 UTC, I talked with John K8YSE about the radio and the problems I had. He suggested I turn off the extended-receive capability of the HT, limiting it to just the ham bands. I did that, and then tried the AO-51 pass. Things went much better. I had an easier time hearing the satellite, and could hear myself through the satellite while transmitting - something I've never been able to do with my IC-W32A. I still need to go back to AO-27 and SO-50, to see if limiting the receiver to just the ham bands yields any improvement when working those satellites. I can't wait to see a new and improved version of the instruction manual, and improvements to the firmware to fix some of the idiosyncracies I've seen in trying to get this radio set up. Even with those issues, I'm glad I bought the radio. I plan to continue working with this radio, to see if I can improve on what I heard this afternoon on AO-51. This may turn out to be a nice radio for the satellites. For now, it's a work-in-progress. Calculation of foundation requirements for dish antenna

Hello all Anyone out there got a rough guide to calculate the foundation requirements for a parabolic dish antenna? We have acquired a 10m C-band dish which we would like to re-use. I am a bit rusty on undergraduate applied mathematics. Anyone with a nice tutorial? This is what I would recommend. I do not have polarization switching for either of my antennas. My 11 turn helix on 435 MHz is RHCP My 14 element KLM on 144 MHz is LHCP K9CIS has studied the polarizations of the uplink/downlink signals from AO-7, VO-52, and FO-29 and this seems to be the best selection. Using his recommendation, I do remember switching my KLM from RH to LH because AO7's downlink was weak and switching did solve the problem. The helix (polarization cannot be switched) was constructed for AO-40 (which was RH) and easily hears FO-29. The optimum set-up is to be able to switch polarization, but you know how things go in the world of ham radio. All the best. Mike (K9QHO) AMSAT 33589

Antenna questions

Hello Everyone, I am new to the list (I'm sure you could have guessed that on your own) After 30+ years of being away from satellite work I have decided it's time to get back into it.. I used to work AO-6 AO-7,RS-15,ect.. Had an old Ameco TX-62 Xmit and used my "new" Kenwood 599D twins for downlink. I have looked for a week or better to find answers but still have several I can't find. I will be using the old (rebuilt) Cushcraft A144-T10 and a new homebrew 22 element 70 cm (11 vert, 11horz). 1. What circular polarization should I be using, LH or RH? I will not have polarization switching (at least not for a while) 2. What is good software for my Yaesu G-5400B rotator? 3. What is a good Interface for my Yeasu G-5400B rotator? 4. Need some good links for reference. thanks.. de wd9apy

Norman, Since I have not seen any response to you on amsat-bb, I will. First we need to know the aperture of the antennas. This will have to be calculated from the gain. Unfortunately, most antenna manufacturers are optimistic about the gain of their antenna. But if you have the gains in dBd: 1. Convert to dBi = 2.1 + dBd 2. Convert gain to a ratio G = 10^(dBi/10) 2. Use this formula G = 4*pi*Ae/lambda^2 to derive Ae 3. Ae = G*lambda^2/(4*pi) = G*4.33/12.56 = 3.45*G 4. Ae for x-yagi is assumed a circle: Ae = pi*R^2 5. R = sqrt(Ae/3.14), R is the width of your aperture so half that would be used for stacking distance. 6. The distance between 2m and 70cm antenna = 1/2 (R(2m) + R(70cm)) The dish will probably sit inside the 2m aperture but be outside the aperture of the 70cm antenna. I mounted my 436CP42 and 2m antennas five feet apart with the 33-inch dish set on the UHF side of the B5400 az-el rotator. This is probably closer than using the apertures for stacking.

Mark, If you can get the CW at 1200 Hz, the following telemetry burst will be right on frequency, and decode every time. Using MixW is a great way to do this. You just need to be very quick with the mouse. ;) DK3WN and I have both found that 2009-028D, NORAD 35004, currently gives much better agreement, especially on Doppler correction, than the others, including 35002 which CalPoly had on their site. Based on the passes yesterday afternoon, my current DOPPLER.SQF file has this: 2009-028D,437364.3,0,LSB,,NOR,0,0 Mike finds a slightly lower RF frequency, but that may just be calibration. Except for one burst at an over the top TCA, the CW was within 200-300 HZ of predicted the whole pass, and the telemetry program has able to handle the slight deviation. 73s, Alan WA4SCA

ND9M Mobile Grid Square Trip

Hi, I'm taking the long way back to the home QTH (EM70) from central Tennessee (EM65) where I attended a geocaching "festival" this weekend. I'll be operating from a bunch of grid squares?on AO-51,?SO-50, and AO-27?while geocaching along the way. I'll hit any pass that reaches 15 degrees or better at my QTH. I'm using a 5-watt HT and Arrow-2 on this trip, so I won't have any particular mucle. Unless (until?) I get the phone call from the Boss telling me that the grass needs to be cut, I'm hoping to be on from the following grid squares, starting tomorrow morning (5/25): EM66, EM56, EM46, EM45, EM55, EM54, EM44, EM43, EM53, EM52, EM42, EM41, EM51, EM40, EM50, EM60 Road and weather conditions permitting, this is the intended sequence over the next four days. Nothing is chiseled in concrete, but hopefully Murphy's Law will take a few days off. (Yeah, right...) CU on the birds, 73, Jim, ND9M

Tuning frequency for CP6 CW?

I've grabbed a few frames from CP6, but I'm wondering if anybody has figured out at what frequency the CW "header" should be tuned to in order to best print the packets that follow? Also--anybody figure out which object letter (or Norad number) CP is? The CP website states 35002 but posts KEPS for 35004 :) And Congrats to both the CP6 and PharmSat teams! 73, Mark L. May 24, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-144.05 Amateur Radio Newsline reports that Frank De Winne, ON1DWN, is set to become the first European Space Agency astronaut to oversee the International Space Station. De Winne is currently at Russia's cosmonaut training center outside of Moscow. He will leave there later this week and fly to neighboring Kazakhstan, where a Soyuz rocket is being prepared to carry him, Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Robert Thirsk, VA3CSA, to the orbiting space outpost. That launch is currently scheduled for May 27 . The arrival of these three space adventurers which will bring the total number of crew on the ISS to six for the first time. For the first four months De Winne, who is from Belgium, will be a Flight Engineer as a member of the Expedition 20 Crew. With the next crew rotation ON1DWN will take over as Commander of Expedition 21 and will serve in that position until his return to Earth in November. This will mark the first time that someone other than a Russian or an American has held that post.
