Shuttle launch

All: Enjoyed the traffic about seeing the launch from Titusville and other places in FL. I grew up in Titusville with Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, know the original owner of the 146.94 machine, and remember vividly where I was when the astronauts in Challenger died . . . and COlumbia, and Apollo 1 . . . . For me it was PERSONAL, even more so for my kids, who had TOUCHED Challenger - my dad still worked at the cape, and we got to go to VIP viewing stands, open houses, and the rest. I have read the Challenger loss report and the Apollo 13 mission reports and assessment of causes. I was devastated to read in the Columbia report of the similarities with Challenger . . . . . Last week, in my day job, I was teaching some folks about lessons from all of the above, relating it to our professional work. What does this have to do with AMSAT, other than being space-related? I'm reminded of a quote from Santayana: "He who will not learn from the past is condemned to repeat it." I think we honor the lost heroes by doing all we can to learn from the past, including NASA's losses. Very 73, Jim wb4gcs(a)amsat.org

Need identity of a satellite

Been hearing a satellite in which its down link similar to that of AO-51 (around 435.310 starting) All I hear is CW telemetry coming from the unit. The last contact was around 2038 UTC at 28.161350 NORTH Latitude (my location EL98) 80.703160 WEST Longitude Some of the telemetry I could copy before it faded was: ISUN0 ITXA0 ITXB6 TTXA65 TTXB66 TNAP80 ? MIXF0 MCON53 SMA86 SMB62 etc. There seems to be approximately 17 data codes and then repeats. The signal is usually strong enough that it comes through quite well even without the 70cm preamp being turned on. Anyone have an idea of what satellite that this might be? Regards, Reid, W4UPD

Watched launch live from shore at Titusville, Florida. First time - It was fantastic even from 12 miles away! The audio feed from NASA TV rebroadcast on 146.94 MHz was appreciated - it added a lot. My Kenwood HT with it stock antenna was marginal but provided full-quieting with magnet-mount external antenna. I agree with Jim, W7LRD. I have watched many years on TV - always impressive. Unbelievable up close and in person. According to NASA, there will be only eight more fliights of the Shuttle. Viewing of a launch and tour of KSC are worth the trip. Leroy Stenzel, W5VG AMSAT 2916

Hello all, Well, glad to report that despite the short time we spent in the Canary Island ZW8BBC Dx pedition and the adverse conditions due to heavy rain that has been facing the northeast of Brazil, where some cities are in public calamity, the contacts via satellites were a success. This was the first DXpedition we know that here in Brazil that sought to work the various ham satellites. Certainly with the knowledge that first "Satellite DXpedition" include in the next Dxpeditions contacts via satellites. Thanks for all and especially the AMSAT to help in disseminating the DXpedition. All, AMSAT-INDIA workshop was conducted on 10th May at the Little Lillys English Public school ,Vidhyaranyapura, Bangalore on the ocassion of fours years of HAMSAT (VO-52) in orbit which was launched on May 5th 2005. The workshop was attended by 130 delegates. This included students from academic institutions and members of Upagrah Amateur Radio Club,VU2URC which is the club station of ISRO. The event started with registration,distribution of delegate kit and breakfast followed by the Invocation song by staff of Little Lilly's school,welcome address by the President of AMSAT INDIA, Air Cmde Suby, VU2UV The following dignitary's were invited to the Dias and the programme was inaugurated by lighting of the lamp by the following: Chief Guest Shri. M. Krishnaswamy, Programme Director-Small Satellite Systems, ISRO Guests of Honor Shri. D.V.A.Raghavamurthy , Project Director-Small Satellite Systems, ISRO Shri. R. Suresh, Mission Director-HAMSAT, ISRO Shri.C.A Prabhakar Head IRS Project management Office Shri. S.R.Nagaraj, Dy. Project DirectorCartosat- 2. ISRO The Chief Guest and the guests of honor appreciated the efforts of AMSAT INDIA in realizing their goals with the HAMSAT launched by ISRO on May 5th 2005.They were highly impressed with the U/V Linear transponder designed and built by a member of AMSAT-INDIA and also made valuable recommendations for the realization of HAMSAT-II. VO-52 operating award certificates were also released by the Chief Guest. VU2GUR, Guru was presented the first certificate for his outstanding contribution for the activity on HAMSAT (VO-52). Certificates were given to VU2RM, VU2UV and VU2MKP by the Guest of Honor for their contributions for the activity in VU. Net controllers VU2QNY, VU2ZUB, VU2PCP and VU3OJI in Bangalore for announcements regarding the workshop. The exhibition area was inaugurated by the Chief Guest and comprised of poster session by VU3TYG, Nitin showcasing projects from AMSAT organizations worldwide, ARISS and software applications and hardware developed by Radio Hams for satellite tracking and pass predictions. VU2POP demonstrated Home brew projects of up/down converters, preamps, VU2RVJ power amplifier module. VURMS and students from VU3LLE showcased Egg beater, Arrow and quad antennas for satellite communications. Ganeshan the designer of the UV linear transponder also demonstrated a working U/V transponder. The Chief Guest, Guest of honor and the delegates were impressed with the OSCAR Locator, down converters, and receivers built by VU2UV during 1970's. Technical presentations from Amal, VU2GDX, VU2WMY, Mani, VU2RVJ, Ravi,VU2GUR and VU2RMS caught the rapt attention of the audience and were highly appreciated. Exide batteries also participated and showcased various batteries which can be used by Radio Hams for powering their Radio's. VU2POP, POP and VU2WMY, Mani managed the flow of the programme from start to the end. The programme was concluded by vote of thanks was by VU3TYG, Nitin who acknowledged the contributions of all those who helped in making this event a big success. Hygain Sat Antenna's and SSB UEK3000 Sat.

Hello to All, Looking for suggestions for feed lines to my preamps, could I use RG213-U ? I am thinking this should be ok as both lines will be only about 10ft in length. >From the preamps, I am using hard line. I also have a UEK3000 receive converter for 2.4 , for feedline, could I get away with RG6, same cable used for sat TV. the run will about 80 ft.... Getting setup for future HEO.s Any suggestion greatly appreciated and many thanks in advance. Norman

G-5500 Rotor trouble resolved.

Hello group. The problem with the rotor has been fixed. Turns out the gears inside had frozen on their shafts. A little penetrant and easy persuasion got things running smoothly again. No parts, just time. This rotor sees intermittent use as its attached to my portable rig, and must sit outdoors.There was a little bit of water in the bottom of the case, as the drain hole was gummed up a bit. I filed it out a bit and regreased everything and she works like a charm again. Thanks to all for the replies and the help. 73 de Shawn - N1HOQ # 33948

Where should I go to buy the cable (CT-62) for the FT-817 that connects the CAT jack to the computer (RS-232 probably) for rig control? Anyone know of a cable that has a built-in serial to USB converter? That would make portable use easier. Tnx and 73, Tony, N2UN

D-Star cubesat

Following the small satellite developers workshop in April there are a number of interesting papers available online. A cubesat using D-Star which has been selected for launch on the Vega launcher is certainly an eye catching project. http://atl.calpoly.edu/~bklofas/Presentations/DevelopersWorkshop2009/5_Miss… Personally, my favourite so far is the 1U propulsion system capable of propelling a 3U cubesat with a delta V of 400 metres per second. Kenwood TS-790 w/ 1.2ghz and IF-232 for sell

Hi all, I'm selling my Kenwood TS-790 with 1.2ghz, voice module, matching SP-31 external speaker, and (NIB) IF-232 computer module. I'm basically selling most of my gear due to failing health. The TS-790 is one of the best VHF/UHF radio's ever made and will pull those weak signals out that others won't. If you check the reviews for this radio you will see what I'm talking about. CTCSS/PL encode is built in so getting into tone activated systems is a snap. The radio does not have PL decoder modules but those are still available through 3rd party makers. I have the original box for the radio but I'm not sure if I have the speaker box. I do have the manual but it's a bit dog eared from use. Sorry, but I will not seperate the package. Cosmetically, I would rate the radio an 8+ on a scale of 10 only because of a very small scratch on the far right side of the display. If you didn't know it was there you wouldn't know it. It's that small and light. hi hi Also the plastic carrying handle on the side has been romoved by a previous owner. The screws are still there but the handle has been removed. Electrically, the radio is a 10. NO problems whatsoever. Will sell all for $1400.00 plus shipping. Thanks for looking, RoD
