Andy I/Q modulators don't work that way, no free lunch and all that. In newbie terms, an I/Q modulator can be thought of as a special mixer that can modulate a carrier signal with an arbitrary modulation format - i.e. any type of modulation you want - literally. An I/Q modulator has a Local Oscillator input (carrier), an I input and a Q input, and an RF output. The modulation signal (FM, CW, AM, SSB, FSK, PSK or whatever) is applied to both the I and Q inputs, which in turn modulate the LO signal to produce the output signal. The type of modulation is determined by the phase relationship between the I and Q inputs. Couple of simple examples - lets say the modulation signal is a 1kHz sine wave, and we have an LO signal of 144.100MHz. If both I and Q inputs are fed with this signal - in phase - then the output of the I/Q modulator will be AM, at 144.100MHz, modulated at 1kHz - you will hear a 1kHz tone on an AM receiver. If the I and Q inputs are fed 90 degrees out of phase with the same 1kHz tone, then the output of the modulator will be either LSB or USB depending on whether the I signal leads or lags the Q signal. If the receiver is set to 144.100 kHz you will hear a 1kHz tone when set to the appropriate sideband. With slightly more complex phase relationships between the I and Q signals it is possible to generate any type of modulation you want, and from a receiver's point of view you will not know how the modulation was generated. But you can't feed different modulation channels into the I and Q inputs - the output would be a complex mixture of the two which would be un- decipharable. You could try Googling 'IQ modulation' for more information, although some of the explanations are aimed at professional engineers with good maths skills. HTH Grant G8UBN Could anyone please explain, in newbie terms, if it is possible to split a telemetry data stream from a satellite OBC into two data streams, sent simultaneously on two nbfm channels, each PSK with the phase difference between them? I have in mind a conversation which I don't fully understand, about these being the I and Q components, and this offering a doubling of the data rate compared with using one nbfm channel. It appears to be in its "normal" mode as Drew said. I was just listening to it about 2130 PDST, and there was quite a bit of activity. Unfortunately my own uplink is clobbering my downlink and I didn't have any success in making any contacts. I'm going to try the "duplexer trick" Sunday morning to see if it helps with the desense problems I'm having. Yaesu Rotor box repaired

I ordered the voltage pots from Yaesu on Monday 6/15 and got them today 6/19. Excellent shipping via Priority mail from California. I installed the Elevation pot this evening and the rotor is fat and happy again as am I. Yes fat and happy. Kodoos to Yaesu for the fine service. I wont be in town to operate K4CQ this year but the club will be able to run automatic control now. I will try to make some contacts from Holden Beach N.C. portable. Thanks to everyone who replied. It seems that small yagis and quagis are OK in roof spaces provided that the liner underneath the roof tiles is not metalised. Contrary to my expectations, rain and snow on the roof doesn't cause problems. DH5MK has some nice pictures of his attic antenna installation on his web site. 73 John G7HIA

Hi all, Just a kind note of thanks for the many replies, both direct and on the website, in regards to operational Satellites. Often when a person is away from the aspect of the hobby awhile, it takes a bit to get your head around whats active and operational. I have printed out and tabulated what is available and where. I'll be in the mostly wet FM13 grid square tomorrow for both morning SO50 plus at least the first AO27 passes tomorrow (Thursday). I will probably stick around and operate from there during the second AO27 pass as well, but that's not for sure yet. >From there, I'll spend tomorrow night in Charleston, SC, so that I can run another mostly wet grid square, FM02, on the 18/2327Z SO50 pass as well as Friday morning's pass at 1339Z. Short of it is I don't know. I don't have a 5500. I would suggest you call Yaesu @ 1-714-827-7600 and ask if part #Q9000404 is listed for that rotor. They can answer that question for you. While you are at it as I did not think to ask would you inquire if they have any info on who made the potentiometer in the AZ and EL rotors for them and do they have a manufactures part number for it. I believe they are the same part. I am sure there are lots of folks here that would like that info. Pots for 5400

I'm throwing this out for what it may be worth... I now have two 5500's and have had no trouble for years. Before that I had two 5400's and had trouble with both on the pots...the connections were rivets, and I opened up both and soldered the rivets, solved the problems on both... I replaced them, still working because of the over 360° rotation on the 5500's.. May be worth a shot to take a look.... 73, Dave, WB6LLO dguimon1(a)san.rr.com Disagree: I learn.... Due to several comments concerning attempts to contact Yaesu have been met with no contact or delays, I thought I'd pass on the info I made available to another on this list. I have found that by using the email/internet approach first then following up via phone to finalize my purchases seem to be reasonably successful. Hopefully this will help others here on the list. No, The same part is used in the three versions of the rotor. The part in the control box is common to all the control boxes. Better said is the part for the rotors is S8101823 and the part for the control boxes is Q9000404.
