FS: Icom IC-W32A complete handheld satellite station

I have for sale a complete, full-duplex-capable handheld FM satellite station, including: - Icom IC-W32A HT, with manual and OEM duck antenna - Icom BP-170 battery case, holds 4 AA alkalines - Batteries America BP-173X, 9.6V 1450 mAh pack - Batteries America BP 171XH, 4.8V 2700 mAh pack - MFJ Speaker mic for the W32A. - Maldol stubby (2.5-inch) duck antenna with BNC connector - MFJ-1717 duck antenna with BNC connector - Pryme AL-800 telescoping whip antenna with BNC connector - Batteries America Cigarette plug for W32A I am not the first owner of the radio. I bought it from a commercial vendor last August at the Huntsville hamfest. That vendor provided a 30-day, no-questions-asked guarantee. The radio did and does work as new, with one exception. When I operate it full duplex and use a Y adapter plug at the earphone jack so I can hear myself and record the pass, I sometimes get audio break up that suggests a loose connection or aged plug. This doesn’t occur if I use the speaker mic, which has a headphone jack on the bottom that I can plug the Y adapter into. Otherwise, the radio performs as new. Cosmetically, it looks as close to NIB as I’ve ever seen in a used radio. I cannot see even minor surface scratches in the display face, and there are no scuffs or marks of any kind on the radio body or the battery packs. I’ll provide digital photos upon request. I picked up the battery packs, cigarette plug and speaker mic at Huntsville last August, too. The original Icom NiCad battery pack wasn’t in great shape, so I retired/recycled it. I bought the AL-800 antenna before I picked up the Icom, and have used it for multiple handheld satellite contacts. Allen, N5AFV, literally has made thousands of handheld satellite contacts using this antenna. The MFJ duck is capable of making satellite contacts, but it’s not as good as the AL-800. I have more than $450 – not retail, but what I actually paid – invested in this gear. Full retail price on the packs and other accessories would bring it close to $500. I am asking $300 (certified check or money order) for the entire package ($310 if you want to use PayPal because of its fees), with an additional $10 to cover USPS Priority Mail shipping and insurance. I am not interested in breaking the package up. Why am I selling? After last weekend’s testing, I want to get a Kenwood TH-F6A because of its versatility. With my other HT and my Diamond duplexer, I’ll still be able to operate the FM satellites full duplex. I am still unemployed (since late December), so something has to go if I want to pick up another radio. That’s also the reason for the extra $10 for PayPal. DJ-G7T - new manual and firmware

Hi! Alinco appears to be addressing some of the concerns those of us who bought the new DJ-G7T HT had. Last week, a new manual was made available through the Alinco web site: http://www.alinco.com/Products/DJ-G7/djg7insweb.zip There is a mention on the Alinco site on how owners who bought the DJ-G7T with the original version of the instruction manual can get a printed version of the new manual for free. It is near the middle of the page: http://www.alinco.com/Products/DJ-G7/ Before Dayton, Alinco had released new firmware for the Japanese version of this HT, addressing issues with Chinese fonts on the LCD display. That was a good sign for the T version, that Alinco was allowing the firmware to be updated. Now there is a new firmware update available for the DJ-G7T at: http://www.alinco.com/Products/DJ-G7/firmdown.html One of the items that the new version of the firmware is supposed to address is "Operation of Cross-band repeat function reviewed". Maybe whatever was done will help those of us who are not as interested in using this HT as a cross-band repeater, but want to use it for cross-band full-duplex operation with the FM satellites. I plan on downloading the new firmware and putting it on my DJ-G7Ts tonight. This weekend, I will once again try the DJ-G7T on FM satellites to see if the performance has improved with the new firmware. The QFH antenna that I use is the answer for good copy of the weather birds, along with a preamp. I get a full quieting signal from within a few degrees of AOS of weather sat NOAA 18. It is sad and shocking to know that Robert is no more. I remember meeting him many times and will continue to remember him as a humble and fine human being. He was a life member of AMSAT INDIA and has advised and shared his inputs during the design of VO-52. He was also one of the early VU station on the AO-40 and other satellites. CW is still alive and well

I thought I'd check for activity on a late evening FO-29 pass tonight as I hadn't listened for quite sometime. I heard two 9 land stations who had the pass entirely to themselves. They were obviously good friends as one of them indicated his spam filter had probably eaten the other station's email who had sent pictures. They agreed to go to the Land Line after the pass indicating they probably lived fairly close to each other. I did wonder though where everyone else was on tonight's pass. I probably should have tuned around more and may have missed some other QSO's. Anyway, it was great hearing CW being utilized. The doppler however kept me quite busy at that frequency as I'm not using software. Just two ears and a pencil. I've got to cobble something together and get on the air soon. I have just got the very sad news from VU2RCR Chandru, that our friend Robert Kohli VU2MKP became a silent key in Bangalore just a few minutes ago in a hospital where he had been admitted a few days ago. For those of us fortunate people who knew Robert, he was a truly remarkable individual who in spite of his disabilities managed to do many things we would be happy to just attempt. He was an example of what can be done in spite of such severe handicaps. Being paralyzed from the neck down, he could only use his head and mouth to control his motorized wheel chair and it was a common sight for him to drive around the streets of Bangalore, visiting friends, going to restaurants and even shopping for radio components for his radio projects. He was an avid radio amateur, controlling the radio and associated equipment, all with plastic rods held in his mouth. He operated the computer also in this fashion and even made computer drawings on antenna designs etc which he shared with friends- my satellite antennae were home brewed from drawings he sent me. He was a keen DXer and had friends all over the world, on HF and satellites also. When AO 40 was operational he made several hundreds of contacts. Robert was Life member of ARSI and took an active part in all activities. He attended several ham fests and knew many, many hams all over VU and the rest of the world. Another satellite-receiver option

Hi Guy's It's been more than several years since I last posted to the bb's. I recently have become active on the sats again and must say that I am enjoying myself. I wanted to comment as to another radio that I have used in combination with my 817 for working the ssb birds. I use a Icon R20 for the downlink radio which is a terrific performer. The other thing you will notice in these photos, is that I am using vox on the 817, which allows me a free hand for adjusting doppler on the 817. I am very pleased with this combination, although the R20 is a all band receiver only. IC-910H low audio problem.

According to the IC-910H manual, pin number 8 at the mic connector is audio output (which varies according to af control). I connected a pair of headphones at the pin but the audio is way to low and cannot be used for listening. Is it normal? I thought that it was designed for this purpose. Another satellite-receiver option

Hey everyone, Over the weekend, I had a chance to do some more testing and experimenting – this time, with a Kenwood TH-F6A HT. My sincere thanks to Ed, N4ALE, who loaned me his TH-F6A for the weekend. I picked it up Friday afternoon and returned it Sunday afternoon, giving it a pretty good workout in the interim – well, part of it. I can’t tell you how it performs on AO-27, AO-51 and SO-50 because I never tried it with any of our FM satellites. In fact, I never keyed the radio’s transmitter. Instead, I focused on its receiver. The TH-F6A proved to be a capable receiver for use on AO-7, FO-29 and VO-52. If you have an all-mode radio that will operate in CW and SSB on the UHF and VHF bands, you can use the HT as your receiver for a full-duplex station that will work our linear-transponder satellites. For the record, I believe the current-production all-mode transceivers that are NOT full duplex include two Icom models (IC-706MKIIG and IC-7000) and three Yaesu models (FT-817ND, FT-857D and FT-897D). Anyone with one of these rigs and the Kenwood can do what I did last weekend. Just add antennas, or a duplexer and a dual-band antenna. There are plenty of workable options, including a good number of homebrew antenna designs to consider. I started out Friday evening just listening because I discovered I needed an adapter to connect my headphones to the receiver jack on the radio, which takes a 2.5 mm connector. Full-duplex contacts in SSB wouldn’t happen until I had that, so I connected my Elk and configured the radio’s B-Band to receive SSB in the 2 meter and 70 cm pass bands. It’s easy to set up, and the fine-tuning feature permits tuning steps in CW or SSB as low as 33 Hz. I chose 100 Hz, which worked well. Switching from CW to SSB took only a few seconds. Through the evening, I copied AO-7 on multiple passes to the east and west of my location, and had reception below 4 degrees at the end of the passes, which was encouraging. Just before 03:00 UTC Friday evening, I had a VO-52 pass that reached a maximum elevation of about 70 degrees here. I copied practically the whole pass, hearing K8YSE work AA5PK and KB1PVH, and also clearly copying CW from W8IJ. Here’s the fun part about that pass – I was standing in my driveway, using a Diamond SRH-789 telescoping whip for an antenna. Having the ability to copy pretty much the whole pass with just a whip helped me to see that the TH-F6A probably would do OK as a satellite receiver. After picking up the headphone adapter I needed Saturday morning, I started working passes. Using an SMA-to-SO239 adapter, I connected the HT to the Elk using a Diamond duplexer. I used either a Yaesu FT-857D or a Yaesu FT-817ND as my transmit radio. The earliest afternoon pass of AO-7 hit 3.8 degrees maximum elevation here, but I heard my CW signal and called CQ a few times with no answer. The next pass of AO-7 was well over 30 degrees here, also to my east. I worked N3TE in CW, then switched to SSB and moved up the pass band for a voice contact with K3SZH. By then, AO-7 was descending to my north, so I switched back to CW and started calling CQ – primarily to see how long I could hear myself through the HT on the downlink. I was thrilled when K4YYL called me. When we finished that contact, AO-7 was at 2.6 degrees elevation according to the computer. I should mention here that I was manually tuning for Doppler throughout the weekend, which also gave me a chance to use various software packages as my “guides” for finding myself at the start of a pass. Ham Radio Deluxe’s Satellite Tracker, Orbitron and SatPC 32 all proved very helpful. After launching one of the programs and getting the Doppler tuning on screen, I just followed their lead and found myself quickly, then stayed where I needed to be – evening tuning up and down the pass band to call others I heard. On the next pass of AO-7 (the last of Saturday evening for me), I worked K4YYL again – this time in SSB, and this time using an FT-817ND at 5 watts out for my transmitter. Think about that – a fully functional all-mode satellite station that I could fit in a day pack with room to spare! FO-29 later Saturday evening was frustrating only inasmuch as there weren’t many folks around. The first pass here hit less than 20 degrees maximum elevation to my east, and I called CQ in CW without a contact. The next pass was about 70 degrees maximum elevation, and I talked to myself for the first 2/3 of the pass before switching over to VO-52, which was also in range at about the same time. K9QHO and I had a nice contact in SSB. Sunday morning, I only wanted to get some contacts on FO-29 because I promised to return the radio that afternoon. I worked Dave, W8IJ, and Leo, W7JPI, in SSB. Seven contacts in all, covering all three CW/SSB satellites and both modes, and all of them using the Kenwood HT as my receive radio. I could have made additional contacts if the satellites – especially FO-29 – had been busier on the passes I worked. A lot of AMSAT members do demos for radio clubs and other groups from time to time, and I decided to post this report on the TH-F6A with that in mind. I know that many who do demos often schedule them to coincide with passes of the FM LEO satellites – and there’s nothing wrong with that. But AO-7 and AO-51 often make evening passes, for example, that are within 30-40 minutes of each other. It occurs to me that letting folks hear satellite contacts in CW and SSB over a satellite that has completed more than 156.000 orbits might be pretty cool – especially when you can note that anybody in the group who has an HT like this one and an all-mode VHF-UHF radio can work AO-7 with the right antenna(s) and a little practice. I looked around on the Web after returning the HT to Ed, N4ALE, and learned that Alinco, AOR, Icom and Yaesu all offer HT-style receive-only radios that are all mode, like the TH-F6A. I suspect any of them could serve as an all-mode satellite receiver, too, although I haven’t tested any of them. I hope to have that chance moving forward. I like the TH-F6A because it also can double as a full handheld station for the FM satellites, albeit in half-duplex. I know that’s not the recommended way to go, but I and many others are, collectively, proof that it can be done effectively and without totally wrecking a pass. I hope all the manufacturers soon will have at least one full-duplex-capable HT in their lines – and that those radios will have all-mode receive on at least one band, like this Kenwood. In the meantime, I encourage those of you with this little radio to experiment with it as a receiver for AO-7, FO-29 and VO-52. Where can I find a current listing of satellite modes by band? I searched the AMSAT.ORG web site but could not find a list. I found an old FAQ from 1994 but it only has a half-dozen modes listed. I want something like this: Mode A - 2m up / 10m down Mode B - 70cm up / 2m down Mode J - 2m up / 70 cm down I'm trying to help debug some logging software with ARRL LoTW and want to make sure we have it all right. Dual Band (144/430) antenna.

Hello. Am looking for information about vertical dual band (144/430 mhz) antenna to work some LEO satellites. Something like a 6/8 (144) and 3x5/8 (430) like X-50 from Diamond or 1/4 (144) and 2x5/8 (430) like X-30 also from Diamond. Or somthing like that. Thanks in advance. Proposed AMSAT-NA Symposium Paper

Hi Dan, I will be submitting a paper entitled: "A Linear U/v Transponder for SuitSat2" Abstract: SuitSat2 will incorporate several advanced circuit functions which will be directly applicable to the "modular" development program under way at AMSAT-NA. One of the SuitSat2 modules, the linear U/v RF transponder, uses the latest in solid state device technology to provide a very efficient 1/2 watt 145 MHz transmitter and a low noise 435 MHz to 10.7 MHz down converter. I wonder if some AMSAT VIP's in the DC area should go to this: *Coffee Briefing on Space Debris and Collisions* *Wednesday, June 10, 2009* *9:00am - 10:00am* *2253 Rayburn* *Keeping Our Space Assets Safe From *an Increasingly Crowded Space Environment, If I was in DC, I would go to represent Student Satellites, but I am in Alabama on travel. Our position should fully support the mitigation of space debris, but we must make sure that the regulations are not overly burdensome to the small guys. I reviewed a first draft that was ONLY written for the 100 Million dollar Launch Provider. It placed an extrordinary burden of "tests" and "reports" and bureaucratic processes that of course would be routine for the Space COmpany with an army of lawyers in their employ, but there was no provision for the small 1kg student payload for a simpler process. This meeting is not the place to speak up, but it is the place to learn and to circulate and network and get a copy of what is being considered. Im far from my desk and so have none of my AMSAT contact info, to try to get this to the AMSAT folks that might be able to get to the meeting. Maybe one of them will see it here and can see about an amsat presence? Bob, WB4APR

This is the first call for papers for the 2009 AMSAT Annual Meeting and Space Symposium to be held October 9 - 11 at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel at the Baltimore Washington Airport. Proposals for papers, symposium presentations and poster presentations are invited on any topic of interest to the amateur satellite community. We request a tentative title of your presentation as soon as possible, with final copy submitted by September 1, 2009 for inclusion in the printed proceedings. Abstracts and papers should be sent to Dan Schultz, N8FGV, at n8fgv(a)amsat.org.

Then for the rest of this trip, I just remember that each day the pass is 23 minutes later or, every other day the ground track repeates but 51 minutes earler each day, and I can always predict when it will come over again. When it does, I QSY the APRS side of my radio from 144.39 to 145.825 for the pass, and I can work em. THen just remember when the next pass will be. There is a scientific team headed to Mongolia and they hope to be able to communicate via APRS text message from a handheld, and are dependend on ISS being on the air, and for ground stations in Japan to hear them and IGate them into the APRS system. KENWOOD TS-790A with 1.2ghz for sell

Hi all, I'm selling my Kenwood TS-790A with 1.2ghz, voice module, matching SP-31 external speaker, and (NIB) IF-232 computer module. I'm basically selling most of my gear due to failing health. The TS-790 is one of the best VHF/UHF radio's ever made. If you check the reviews for this radio you will see what I'm talking about. CTCSS/PL encode is built in so getting into tone activated systems is a snap. The radio does not have PL decoder modules but those are still available through 3rd party makers if you need them. Most people don't. I have the original box for the radio but I'm not sure if I have the speaker box. I do have the manual but it's a bit dog eared from use. Sorry, but I will not seperate the package. Cosmetically, I would rate the radio an 8+ on a scale of 10 only because of a very small scratch on the far right side of the display. If you didn't know it was there you wouldn't know it. It's really not worth mentioning but I trey to decribe everything the best I can. Also the plastic carrying handle on the side has been romoved by a previous owner. The screws are still there but the handle has been removed. Electrically, the radio is a 10. NO problems whatsoever. It meets or exceeds all manufacturers ratings. Will sell all for $1300.00 plus shipping. Thanks for looking, RoD

Last I saw, he said "...we have not made up our minds" on the HF-to-HF transponder. A couple of years ago, when we were all talking about "Toss-Sats" (ready-built satellites that could be flown on a moment's notice and hand-launched from the shuttle or ISS, like SuitSat), I was going to actually throw a Mode A transponder together from an old Sonar commercial VHF rig on 2M, and an old CB (converted to 10M), just to satisfy myself that it could be done that cheaply. Never got around to it, though.... Yet... CP-6 Decode

I am new to cubesats & am having decode issues. I have the Polysat CPX decoder and finally got correct keps pasted into decoder preferences>satellite. I am using SAT-PC32 and have appropriate keps and freq data loaded. Program tracks CP-6 correctly and agrees with tracking info in CPX decoder. Radio is IC910H in LSB mode and radio is tracking SAT-PC32 doppler freq data OK. Today (June 7), I had a decent pass with reasonable EL. Antenna are tracking CP-6 ok via SAT-PC32. I heard nothing during today's 10 min pass. I believe I have another issue beyond not hearing signal. I am using an AEA DSP2232 tnc between IC910H and CPX decoder. It is set for 9600baud packet data from copying now defunct GO-32 BB. I believe I need to figure out how to set it up for 1200baud FSK. Is that correct? Jim K7EG
