Golden Packet attempt 2011!

Didn't make that FD Satellite Contact? Get outdoors again on Sunday 24 July Noon to 1600 local time to join the annual Golden Packet attempt. See www.aprs.org/at-golden-packet.html for east coast or http://aprs.org/pct-golden-packet.html for west coast We need you with your D700 to drive/hike to the top of some of the highest mountains in the USA and set up as a portable APRS digipeater to see if we can link a Golden Packet across thousands of miles. There is an attempt along the Appalachian Trail from Alabama to Maine and along the Pacific Crest trail from San Diego to Seattle. Good portable stations are needed on many mountain tops! See the above web page for the planning. IN particular we need stations in the East: * MT Washington * Mt Greylock, * Central Maine, * Mid NH area, * Georgia, * Huntsville, * Lookout Mountain TN * and more? If you look at July 7 ...it changes over between 23:31 and 23:46 according to the times entered. AO-7 Mode A/B

Not having much experience working the SSB birds, can anyone give me a rough schedule of when AO-7 goes from mode B to A and vice versa, and what mode it is in right now. I am supposed to work a SSB pass with a guy this coming Monday night around 2300z, and we only have mode B equipment. Is there any way to get a general idea/guess of what more it will be in? I don’t want to even mess with hauling equipment around if it won’t be in mode B. 73! Zack KD8KSN

I've worked every ham satellite that has been launched since I got on Oscar 7, cw, most of my gear at that time home brew in 1980. For the life of me I cannot see any difference in pushing a button on an FM bird than operating a cell phone, except that it is a 2 user operation and the time available is limited... Thanks for the reply Peter, I am " not" a school teacher . lol.... I have a mere setup for a satellite station , FM only . I would not attempt to set up a portable station for a classroom event and expect to recieve any of the downlinks We look forward to from ARISSAT . I have only downloaded 2 or 3 sstv pictures from Seeds 2 . That is with My controlled antenna and FM station . Is it so easy to receive sstv from Seeds ? I hear it and hear a good signal , but don't copy the pic very successfully . I think it will be the same power output that is from Seeds .? 500mw? I will be listening , but still have My doubts.
