Quick question for all. I submitted for voice telemetry and SSTV certificates at the same time. I received the SSTV certificate quite quickly but still awaiting the voice telemetry certificate. I am presuming perhaps that SSTV may not be as numerous as voice telemetry requests? I also finally was able to submit for the secret word certificate which was nice from a great pass yesterday afternoon. Enjoying the satellite while it is still usable and hope to try the transponder soon. 73, Pat N2VYT FN20un

Satellite Activity Logger being Pulled?

Return Mail to wa1rks(a)yahoo.com Back In June Bob In NJ. the provider of all the "Logger" pages ( Which I understand he does out of pocket on his own) said that the Satellite logger page was not being used enough, and that to save space on the system his was going to pull it.This is something provided here in the gud old USA. sad to watch if fall to other entities.Hence the adage "Use it or lose it" my 2 cents worth. irreguardless of the particulars of the situation,it still remains to be lost,if not used. My 2 cents worth.

Radio hams tune in to space airwaves

John Heath G7HIA has written an article about amateur radio space communications for the October edition of the British Interplanetary Society magazine Spaceflight. Good ARISSat-1 reception with rubber ducky in Eastern Canada

I was visiting FN95 on my vacation; beautiful hilltop with about nearly 360 degree visibility. I first caught a 30-degree elevation using my F6A with stock rubber ducky. I had to twist it around a bit to find the right best orientation (horizontal this time) but I got a nice signal the entire pass. I hope I have recorded some SSTV that I can decode once I get back home. That will be cool! Next orbit (about 23:58Z Aug 29) it went directly overhead (or close). This time I happened to hit the greeting in English, which was clearly audible, although I did not get as much SSTV. I probably wasn't tweaking the doppler enough or getting the orientation right. Bonus: ISS came over 5 minutes later and I got to ooh and aaah our friends. Now that I have a few things that work, I can eliminate some of my sources of trouble at the home QTH, and hopefully get the signal back where I have the decoding software etc set up! Whoo-hoo! This is fun! And the telemetry sounds like the solar panels are holding up well even if the battery did not! Burns, W2BFJ

SatPC32 and Nova both support Flip mode directly. Just follow the instructions within the programs on how to do the set up. 73, Charlie AJ9N In a message dated 9/4/2011 1:28:05 P.M. Central Daylight Time, wa4ivm(a)amsat.org writes: I believe the G5400 is a 360 degree rotor control. If you are wanting to go from West through North to East, you will hit the stop. Two options come to mind. Put the stop at South, but this gives the same problem going from West to East though South. The second option is a program like FLIPANTS that turns the antenna on it's back and turns the Az control plus/minus 180 so that the stop is not a problem. Decide if the "through North" or "through South" will become a problem and make a choice, then use the software to overcome it. Flipants is a old DOS program, but I think you can find an equivalent available. Adjusting true north for azimuth rotator.

I am planning to install my G5400 rotator inside a tower having a welded rotator shelf. The tower is not installed yet and will have one face against the side of my house which is positioned about 28 degrees northeast (Per Google Earth). I assume when I drill the rotator shelf, I can adjust for the gross 28 degree offset of the tower. However how important is it to do this at all? Does the rotator have to be installed exactly toward true north or can I make up the difference when clamping down the antenna mast assuming the antenna is oriented true north? Note I will be using a Trakbox and need the ADC to center on true north. Secondly does anyone know if the ruler function in Google Earth points true north? Thanks to all who replied. When I last installed the rotator, I had a free standing tower and I pored the foundation and mounting bolts such that one leg was aligned true north. In this new case, the tower face will have to be against a wall and that wall as I mentioned is +28 degrees from north. The consensus is that the azimuth rotator case can be oriented in any direction and the antenna's (and elevation rotator separation kit) be clamped to the top of the rotator aligned to true north. What I can't sort out is if I will hit a stop if I rotate full CW or CCW, before reaching the south direction. The comments seem to imply I won't. IARU AC Meeting Summary

The IARU administative council meeting took place in Sun City on August 19-20 and the summary has now been released. The Amateur Satellite Service is mentioned in several places. Among them is the expansion of the 70cm CubeSat segment: "6.3. Owing to his presence in Sun City for the regional conference, IARU Satellite Adviser Hans van de Groenendaal, ZS6AKV, presented his report in person and supplemented his report with oral remarks. He mentioned that educational institutional satellites using amateur radio frequencies were increasing. The Satellite Advisory Panel has expanded the CubeSat band from 437.305 – 437.505 MHz by 100 kHz to 437.605 while taking into account certain ARISS preferred slots. He mentioned the opportunity to convert the CubeSats to amateur usage upon completion of the educational institutional experimental usage and in this way anticipated more satellite availability for the amateur-satellite service." The minutes of the Final Plenary of the IARU Region 1 meeting held in Sun City have now been released. Among the satellite releated items are: SC11_C3_Rec _02 – Document SC11_C3_37a To add to the constitution A.1.3.11 Protection of the fundamental, natural and finite resource “frequency spectrum,” to keep it clean and undisturbed from man-made electromagnetic disturbances causing harmful interference to the amateur service and the amateur satellite service. SC11_C5_Rec_10 - SC11_C5_16 D-Star in Italy using SAT-Band Escalation Procedure: 1. Write the repeater operator to remove out of satellite segment. 2. Inform the trust server operator of the IARU bandplan breach made by the use of the repeater. 3. Inform the government about the repeater and request them to remove the repeater. Proposed by OeVSV, seconded by REF. Approved unanimously. SC11_C5_Rec_23 - SC11_C5_44 VHF Handbook Satellite Chapter Removal of the existing Satellite chapter and replace with the attachment of paper 44. September 4, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-247.09 The European Space Agency reported that its August 16 test to re- pressurize gas tanks aboard their Proba-2 spacecraft were successful. Proba-2 was launched on 2 November 2009. Less than a cubic metre in volume, it carries a total of 17 new technologies and four science payloads focused on the Sun and space weather. According to the ESA, Proba-2 uses a 'resistojet' engine to maintain the microsatellite's orbit at 600 km altitude. This experimental en- gine runs on xenon gas heated before ejection to provide added thrust. Laurens van Vliet of Dutch research organisation TNO, which developed the technology explained, "What makes this repressurisation unique is that the added gas was not stored in a pressurised state but produced from a solid material at room temperature, the first of four 'cool-gas generators' on Proba-2. You and I both are at about 5 degrees west declination. That's almost "in the noise" with any normal VHF or UHF array, and not much above the accuracy of the rotor. Most compasses are marked no better than 3 degrees per tick mark. bye bye S band

Before the weather gets bad I am planning of "redoing" a lot of antennas. As part of that process the satellite antennas are to be moved. At which time I plan to remove the S band system that worked so magnificently on AO-40 (sobsob) and a little bit on AO-51. With AO-51 declining the probability of S band activity is remote. Why am I floating this on the bb? To me it appears to be a turning point of what I (we) would like to do and what I (we) can do. Smarter people than I have said it will be a long time before we can really have some L/S activity. So rather than wear out my rotors turning some useless hardware I will put it in "mothballs". OSCAR-11 REPORT 01 September 2011 This report covers the period from 27 April to 01 September 2011. The satellite has continued to operate in a very predictable way since the last report, and no changes have been observed. During this time the satellite has been heard reliably during its ten-day transmission periods. Excellent signals have been reported from stations located around the world, and good copy obtained from decoded telemetry frames. The easiest way to check whether OSCAR-11 is operational is to look at the General Satellite Status website http://oscar.dcarr.org/index.php . You can also calculate the operating schedule from the last switch-off time, which was 26 August 2011 at 08:00 UTC (approx), using 10.35 days off followed by 10.35 days on. Reception reports have been received from David VE3SB, Jerry WB5LHD, Toby MM0TOB, Colin VK5HI and Lee M0HOK. Many thanks to all and those who posted to the status website. Although eclipses occur during every orbit, the evening passes over the UK were mostly clear of eclipses, owing to the longer hours of daylight during the Summer months. This resulted in stronger signals during the evening passes. However, as winter approaches eclipses will now start to affect the evening passes. The on-board clock continues to gain, 26 seconds during the current reporting period, and 83 seconds since regular transmissions started at the end of August 2010. There is however a large accumulated error of 308.54339 days slow. This was caused mainly by the clock stopping during eclipses, when there was also an unknown drain on the power supply. The units of the least significant digit correspond approximately to seconds (0.86 seconds actually). The VHF beacon frequency is 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry. The satellite is operating in the default mode, with a cycle time of 20.7 days. 10.35 days on followed by 10.35 days off. At the present time, while OSCAR-11 is operating in a predictable way, I no longer need direct reports or files by e-mail. However, could all listeners continue to enter their reports on the general satellite status website. This is a very convenient and easy to use facility, which shows the current status of all the amateur satellites, and is of use to everyone. Reports around the expected times of switch-on and switch-off are of special interest, especially for times 12:00 - 17:00 and 22:00 - 07:00 UTC, when the satellite is out-of-range in the UK . AO-51 Scheds with Europe

I am looking to flesh out some grids, and Michael (EI3GYB) and I are running out of things to talk about. With my handheld set-up I can work reliably down to 3 deg, which brings Europe west of central Germany, the UK, and western Scandinavia into the circle during the dinner-time-Europe passes. I usually hear KB1RVT on the passes as well (and his QRZ entry has a grid map that will give you a good idea of what is possible), so you could check off two grids. So far, Amsterdam is the farthest east I have worked. AO-27 kicks into data too early to be usable. I am located in FN42IO during these passes; please feel free to drop me an email to set-up a sched while AO-51 is still kicking (and actually, has sounded much stronger this past week). Edition 58 of the IARU Region 1 VHF-UHF-UW Newsletter publishes the notes from the key C5 committee meeting at the IARU-R1 Sun City conference. There are a number of Italian repeaters operating in the Amateur Satellite Service segment from 145.8-146.0 MHz causing interference to the uplinks and downlinks of Amateur Radio satellites. Among them are: D-STAR: IR0MA 145.99375MHz -1.975 Roma, Lazio IR7AZ 145.97500MHz -1.250 San Giovanni Rotondo , Puglia Also these Italian repeaters using other modes: FM: IR0CK 145.8500MHz -0.600 Roma (Internet Linked) Echolink: IQ0FP 145.8875MHz Node 522 131 Packet: IK4MTK-6 145.975MHz Parma, North Italy The IARU-R1 Sun City conference C5 committee meeting notes say: SC11_C5_16 – D-Star in Italy using SAT-Band IARU R1 stresses the importance of satellite service and band plans also in case of the introduction of new modes. It is recommended to disconnect repeaters/nodes from international D-Star network if these are operated in contradiction to IARU-R1 band plans. Action points: 1. Write the repeater operator to remove out of satellite segment. 2. Inform the trust server operator of the IARU bandplan breach made by the use of the repeater. 3. Hi Giulio, AB2VY Edusat is a "Non amateur satellite" ? ......OK ,but it has received an experimental license on 435.750 MHz for communicating at no cost into the "Satellite Amateur Frequencies" without coordination from IARU..OK ? It is very strange that Edusat has received an experimental licence for communications into the Satellite Amateur Band without a frequency coordination from IARU It is also very strange that the GAUSS group do not officially published the operating frequencies of Edusat stating that those frequencies published via internet are wrong frequencies. It seems that there is no coordination between our Communication Autority in Roma and IARU as well between the GAUSS group the IARU and the Radio Amateur community. Is anyone using SatPC32 with a Kenwood TS-2000? If so, what is your Doppler.SQF entry for the transponder. I can not seem to get it to go into Duplex (Satellite) mode. It goes into Split and, of course, I can not hear the downlink. 73 -- *Carl W8KRF*

All, I will be traveling through EM47 on Sep 3rd and again on the 5th. I will stop briefly on both days to provide an opportunity for as many as possible to put this rare grid in their logbook. I will only be able to be active on one pass per day. Has the ARISSat-1 CW-2 frequency shifted?

A couple days ago, I noticed that to get a 500 Hz signal for CW-2 (nominally 145.9190 MHz) to decode the BPSK-1000 signal, I had to change the unDoppler-shifted frequency on my USB receiver from 145.918500 MHz to 145.918280 MHz, a change of 220 Hz. This new value have been consistent over a couple days of careful watching. I don’t believe it to be an error in the keps or clock as it has been true both at the beginning and end of the pass. My receiver has been on for over a month, so unless a component changed value suddenly, .... Has ARISSat-1 changed, has my radio changed, or does only my hairdresser know for sure? Ron W5RKN

ARISSAT-1 TLM Problem

Hi all .. I am receiving the CW and TLM ok signal wise .. I tune in the CW to the mark in the CW / BPSK window.. But I don't ever receive any telemetry .. Using USB, FT897D .. I use the rig and computer for BPSK31 all the time .. Any ideas or suggestions ?? I even watched the You tube Video that was posted .. It seems like I am doing it correctly .. but must be missing something .. Thanks.. Randy - N2CUA
