Harbor Freight Items

Two items on the Harbor freight weekly newspaper ad jumped out at me today ... The first is one of those "jump starter" batteries in a plastic case with handle, jumper cables, meter, et al. This one is probably a 10-12AH sealed lead acid one. Its case is not "sonic welded" - so we can get inside and "improve" the panel with whatever jacks we want (grin). I can see my 12V marine battery on its bottom platform ... a mounted radio or two on the top (might replace that "padded seat" with a simple piece of shelving), and have a "rolling" cart for a portable setup. Learning about AMSAT in Dayton

I have been interested in AMSAT operation for awhile but have not even began to put together a station for satellite work. I will be attending the Dayton Hamvention this weekend, and in doing so I am hoping to learn enough about satellite work to get on the air over the next few weeks. With the large collection of AMSAT experts in Dayton, my question is what the group would recommend to a newcomer to try to get out of Dayton in learning some satellite basics. Should I make sure to go to the forum? Are there going to be demonstrations on software and station setup? Should I mainly try to make in-person resource contacts? Mainly, where should I focus my efforts this weekend? I am hoping to learn as much as possible and hope to finally get involved in satellite operations in the next few months. L band uplink frequencies

Hi all. I am trying to determine an FM uplink frequency in L band which is suitable for most countries. As I understand it, 1269 is the traditional frequency of choice, but with Galileo now being deployed and some local EIRP restrictions here in Europe, that may no longer be the best choice. In searching the AMSAT archive I saw several messages about the P3E 'galileo alternative' at 1260 and a message saying that there is an EIRP limit in Germany below 1263MHz. - Is that still accurate? The final suggestion from those posts was 1263.520 Ultimately some frequency agility to avoid radars etc may be needed, but as with all projects, a starting point is needed. Any thoughts? Circular polarization

Is a UHF circular polarization antenna needed for the current operational satellites? I am planning some work on my antenna system and wonder if the CP is needed, or actually, deteriorate the signal by 3dB if the satellites are using linear antennae??
