Nigerian scam span purporting to be from W0SL

Today I got a scam email purporting to be from Roy Welch, W0SL, asking for an emergency loan. If I got it, I suspect many others on amsat-bb got it too. The originating IP address is in Nigeria. Where else? I've seen this exact scam before. In those cases someone had stolen the password of the person they were pretending to be. I don't think that happened here. The "From" address was his correct email account 'rdwelch(a)swbell.net' but the Reply-To: address was 'rdwelclh(a)yahoo.com'. Note the extra 'l'. I think the scammers created this second account on Yahoo and used it to send the scam email, forging Roy's address in the from field. Any reply would, of course, go to the scammer's address on Yahoo and many people might not notice the subtle change. swbell.net has no SPF (Sender Policy Framework) records in the Domain Name System to indicate to the rest of the Internet which IP addresses may legitimately originate email from that domain, so recipient systems cannot easily detect forgeries.

Roger Beeps

Trying to work AO-07 at 17:00 UTC and yet again I'm hearing the same station with a Roger Beep/bleep on every CQ satellite call Please refrain from using these (IMHO) awful beeps,sounds like a strangled cat half the time. Rob M0TFO

Hi, My update for later pass today ( a low elevation pass ) Beacon heard: Acquisition 1533 hrs GMT when the satellite was out to the West and the Atlantic ocean. Strong initially but noticed a tendency for fading, whether this was perhaps spin or due to the low elevation and terrain from my QTH. Lost signal approx. 1538 hrs GMT Same set up: Kenwood TS 2000 plus ELK antenna and tracking with SATPC32 and AZ/EL Rotator. Ken Eaton GW1FKY

AMSAT RX broadband Preamp

Hello group, I received my broadband VHF/UHF/WX Satellite RX Preamp and installed it direct to the feedpoint of my 70 cm antenna. Put 11 volts DC on it, however no increase of noise on the receiver. And I do not notice any amplication of received signals. Taking the preamp out of circuit results in same signalstrength as before without preamp. Any ideas? 73 Hans, pa0hop JO21xu

Hi, Sorry to learn about the decay of FITSAT-1 - I congratulate everyone concerned with the project and pleased to the success that you had. I have just listened for the beacon over here in Wales-UK and at 1229 hrs GMT I heard it quite strong with just my "ELK" Antenna. It brought memories of first hearing it using the same set up and I pleased that I had the opportunity to be one of those monitoring the success since its launch. My very Best Regards to All. ARR preamp repair

Anybody ever try fixing an ARR P432VDG preamp yourself? I was recently given one that I suspect was transmitted into. Drawing more current than spec'd (45 mA vs. spec of 25), no S-meter increase when connected. Or am I better off just sending it in? ARR's website says most GaAsFET preamp repairs run around $22.50 plus shipping... George, KA3HSW
