Hi Clayton, notwithstanding the radio aspect, that Park looks like an incredible place. (The Park web site is one of the worse sites ever seen but since I have once been to Amarillo, I can see that the Park is up in the panhandle). I'm intrigued with all the greenery in the site photos. I thought the Panhandle area was pretty dry and flat. Anyway, looks like a beautiful place and a good middle ground for a sat contact as it should be up against OK if memory serves. Upcoming ARISS contact with University of Nebraska's Peter Kiewit Institute, Omaha NE

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at University of Nebraska's Peter Kiewit Institute, Omaha NE on 15 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:00 UTC. It is recommended that you start listening approximately 10 minutes before this time.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK4KHZ. The contact should be audible over portions of Australia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Welcome to the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station contact hosted by the University of Nebraska's Peter Kiewit Institute. Today, a group of scouts will serve as astronaut interviewers and will have the rare opportunity to speak with an astronaut onboard the International Space Station as it orbits about 250 miles above the surface of the Earth. We are hosting this exciting STEM outreach event as part of the Mid America Council's Jubilee celebration and Scouting's world-wide Jamboree On The Air event. For Nebraskans, this ARISS contact is especially significant as we are only a few miles from Ashland, Nebraska, the home of Nebraska's own astronaut, Clayton Anderson. Throughout this weekend and the run-up to this ARISS contact, scouts have been able to explore a number of different aspects of space and amateur radio, where knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are key. Astronaut Interviewers, who will talk with our astronaut, completed a rigorous application and review process, prior to being selected for this unique assignment. Other activities at Jubilee have included launching straw rockets, learning about near space science through high altitude ballooning, and operating amateur radio stations to connect with other scouts around the world. Lastly, this outreach event would not have been possible without the tremendous support from volunteers at the Mid America Council, the University of Nebraska at Omaha's College of Education, the NASA Nebraska Space Grant, the Bellevue Amateur Radio Club, and the Peter Kiewit Institute. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What is your favorite thing you have seen while in space? 2. What do you do in your free time? 3. How does it feel being in low gravity? 4. How long does it take to get to the Station? 5. How often do you get to talk with your family? 6. What does lightning look like from space? 7. What differences in your body have you noticed since being in space? 8. What does it feel like to lift off and rocket into space? 9. What should I be doing now to prepare myself to be an astronaut? 10. What long term health concerns do you have while being in space and once you return? 11. What is the one thing you miss most about Earth when you are on the ISS? 12. What is the most difficult thing about living in space? 13. What is the most important science mission that you've conducted so far on the ISS? 14. Why did you choose to be an astronaut? 15. If you could do any other mission in space, what would it be? 16. What was the most difficult part of astronaut training? 17. How long have you been in space? 18. How do you exercise in space? 19. How do you eat in zero gravity? 20. Satellite telemetry in the classroom

Insulated AWG to bare copper or aluminum

Hello All, I am wondering if there is any "simple" conversion factor to use to modify the length of an antenna element from insulated #10 AWG copper wire to anther gage of wire or to aluminum or copper tubing. I don't wish to learn any modeling software at this time I need the information so I can use materials I have on hand to build yagi antennas for 2 meters and 70 centimeters. Hi James, I think you may be out of luck. AFAIK, there isn't a simple conversion since the entire dimensions of the antenna is dependent upon the diameter of the various elements, that is the primary reason people use the modeling software in the first place to find these things out! Changing the diameter of the elements will affect their length as well as the spacing between the elements - there's nothing simple about any of it!!! ARISS International Meeting JSC Tour Time Change

Larry, Thanks for asking. Unfortunately you are correct regarding the Monday tour. That is why we wanted to get this on -bb, so all are aware of this unfolding issue. Once we learned about the tour time change, we were acutely aware that it conflictrf with the cruise arrival time. We pushed back on NASA fairly hard to correct this but were unsuccessful. Their only suggestion was cutting back the tour to only an hour---from 10:30-11:30--to accommodate those on the cruise. We did not think this was a good idea because the tour would be inferior and it is not clear that those on the cruise could get there by 10:30. So we are working alternatives for those affected. If folks are affected by this, we need to generate a list of all that want to attend the tour but cannot due to this constraint. Once we have that, we plan to go back to NASA and see what alternatives we can offer up to them. FYI we have already engaged with NASA on alternatives. I am not sure what they will be able to support yet. Larry K8MU ************* ARISS-International Meeting Attendees: The ARISS-US team had a meeting with NASA yesterday on the November ARISS-I meeting and our tour plans. We were informed that our ARISS tour time, originally planned for Monday November 14th in the afternoon, will change. We are now scheduled from 8:30 am-11:30 am on Monday November 14. NASA stated that they are overwhelmed by the substantial influx of tour requests on Monday. This includes the SpaceCom conference, the ARISS-I meeting and the normal tour groups from Space Center Houston. An estimated 2,000 attendees will be coming to the SpaceCom conference (industry, academia, and government space leaders) that will be held the same time as our ARISS-I meeting in Houston. Unfortunately, this will limit tour guides and tour availability in the times they can work with our group-thus the need for the tour time change. We apologize for this, but I think you can understand this is unavoidable. Please look for K2BSA/5 running satellite operations for Jamboree on the Air this Saturday from the National Scouting Museum in Irving Texas in EM12. Andrew Koenig, KE5GDB and Keith Pugh, W5IU will be running the sat. station this year from about 1500-2200Z on the 15th. We even have the educational model of the Fox satellites to show off to the Scouts. Please give us a shout and be patient if a Scout happens to be on mic.
