WSJT-X FT8 QSO confirmed between W2JAZ and W5RKN on FO-29

A few days ago, Rick, W2JAZ, asked me if the new, short, weak signal protocol, FT8, could be used on satellites. I posited it might work near AOS or LOS where the Doppler corrections are small. FT8 is operationally similar to the older protocols but four times faster (15-second T/R sequences) and less sensitive by a few dB. So we set out to configure our satellite stations to use WSJT-X with FT8. With some configuration advice from W0DHB, we each got our systems configured. Mine (W5RKN) is a Flex-6500 with two DEMI transverters running SmartSDR, SatPC32, FlexSATPC, and WSJT-X. Rick’s (W2JAZ) is a Flex-5000 with U/V module, running PowerSDR, SatPC32, FlexSATPC, and WSJT-X. After a couple runs on AO-7 without success, we tried again tonight on the 0220Z (14 Oct) pass of FO-29. I started out at my AOS calling CQ W5RKN EM10. After several transmissions without success, the reply W5RKN W2JAZ FN29 popped up on the screen. Then followed the usual signal report, RRR and 73 transmissions. As soon as I can figure out the appropriate fields for LoTW, we’ll log the QSO there. I am not aware of other WSJT-X QSOs on the satellites, so I’d be interested in other’s experiences, Ron and Rick

Ku Satelilte Band?

I have an old 1m dish and get wall-to-wall signals on a spectrum analyzer scanning the Geo arc. Is there anything at all that anyone can do with any signals of interest without having special decoder rings for each one? Experiments? Bob

Guess if this is a real birdie (internal beat frequency) I am up the creek. If in the radio design cannot be changed. I heard Kenwood might be releasing a new satellite rig at Dayton next year. Any rumors out there? So think I answered my question and the TS-2000 cannot be used for SO-50 TNX AGN 73 Mike K4MIA

AO-7 Mode A

I understood that AO-7 is for the moment still in complete sunlight and as such, should be switching back and forth between Mode A/B every 24 hours or so.. Looking though at the amsat.org Satellite Status page, I see no evidence of this. If it is changing, does anyone know when UTC that is happening? Tom Schuessler N5HYP

TS2000 Birdie 436.795

I am a newbie to satellites. I have only worked the FM birds using handie talkies and arrow antenna. I wanted to start working in doors with my TS-2000. On SO-50 downlink 436.795 it has a bad birdie that wipes everything. Full squelch will not stop it. I have disconnected the antenna and still there. On other radios it is not there, so cannot be RFI. Has anyone ever heard of TS-2000s that have this? Any ideas of something that can be done to fix? Even sending it in to Kenwood Service. Cannot work SO-50 with it this way. TNX 73 Mike K4MIA
