You need to get your keps from AMSAT in order to have AO-85 listed because it was part of a military launch. Long shot: August eclipse intersecting any Oscars?

Hi folks, I was asked this on our club's weekly net last week. I expect the answer is no, but thought I should check... Will any of the ham satellites be affected by next month's solar eclipse across the USA? To be affected, the satellite's track (at some 18,000 mph) would need to intersect some portion of the eclipse (not necessarily the path of totality), which I understand is moving at some 1,500 mph. Given the speeds involved, that's unlikely. But we've got a number of satellites in sun synchronous orbits, so it's not impossible. Any way to predict this? If there are any, the telemetry from the event would be an awesome bit of data for students' analysis. Greg KO6TH p.s. I remember being at work (I think in the 1990's) during an eclipse. As I recall, the spot of totality was out in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Mexico. The real-time satellite weather background on my Unix workstation looked like someone had burned a hole in it with a cigarette.

Unexpectedly a positive role model, of sorts!

All, Last Saturday evening, I worked SO50 and heard a young lady calling out trying to make a QSO. Nobody was responding to her call, so I decided that I needed to respond. I was barely able to make the QSO successfully due to trees and buildings getting in the way. On Monday, I received the email below that was sent by her father, Tom W4SDR. He set up a Google photo page and video of his daughter Audrey's KM4BUN first satellite QSO. The video and pictures are very cool! Tom W4SDR, gave me permission to share the link below. The entire family have amateur radio licenses, which is impressive in itself. It felt good to be able to provide a positive experience for these kids. Just goes to show you that any radio activity can be an opportunity for doing some good for someone else. If you hear Audrey KM4BUN or her brother Jack KM4ZIA, please try to give them a QSO. They are certain interested in setting up a sked. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at ISS R&D conference, Washington, D.C. on 20 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:23 UTC. It is recommended that you start listening approximately 10 minutes before this time. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. This ARISS contact will be conducted with Youth in Aviation Program students from the East Coast Chapter, Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. (ECCTAI) attending the ISS Research and Development conference as part of the conference's STEM day. ECCTAI is one of the largest Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. chapters in United States and serves the Washington DC area. ECCTAI is dedicated to keeping alive the history, achievements, and importance of the original Tuskegee Airmen. The term, "Tuskegee Airmen," refers to the men and women, who were involved in the so-called "Tuskegee Experience", the World War II Army Air Corps program to train African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft. ECCTAI strives to increase understanding of the "Tuskegee Experience" by honoring the accomplishments and perpetuating the history of the men and women who participated in the "Tuskegee Experience" and to introduce young people to the world of aviation and space through its Youth in Aviation Program (YIAP). Dear amsat-bb subscribers, When replying to amsat-bb e-mails, please be careful to trim out extraneous text from the message you are replying to ... especially digest users. Other users find it tedious and confusing to try to figure out exactly which part of the message you are replying to. In addition, those of us reading on handheld devices find it that much more difficult to scroll through a bunch of text that has already passed across amsat-bb. Good evening bird folks, We are approaching the end of ops from the Faroe Islands. I have been able to work a number of passes from the IP61/62 line near where we are staying. Unfortunately, the horizon only lets me work to about 4-7° depending on the direction (in somewhat of a valley). The good part is that this is actually very good for the topography of the Faroes. I do not have any way to get to a better horizon from base, so that's about the best I can do (hey, at least it's a grid line). Tonight (7/13 UTC) I will be on the FO-29 passes towards North America at 0127Z and 0310Z. Planning a fixed transmit of 145.940 and going down in case of QRM. I'll see about getting on some FM passes for Europe today as well, and FO-29 tomorrow evening. On Friday we head out in the morning and go to Greenland GP49. I will be on many passes from here and expect nothing less than a perfect horizon to the west. All of North America should be in easy reach. There are SO-50 passes where I'll be able to work Texas and Ukraine in the same pass. I will try to make my way over to GP39 at some point for a day trip, but not guaranteed. As with the rest of the trip, FO-29 is the primary focus since it is near apogee. While I don't exactly plan to be QRV from Iceland again, I will be passing through again twice on flight connections. My connection in HP94 on Friday is about three hours and on the way back to New York it is about five hours near HP83/84. For the stragglers, I may be able to pull something off by super special request. Otherwise, the last portion of this trip will be FN30 and EM90 with a jaunt down the EL9x line to Miami, before returning to Oklahoma City. 73 and mind your ERP, Gabe NJ7H

Is there a blog/support site for SatPC32? Even though I DL the AMSAT Keps via SatPC, AO85 never appears as a selectable SAT within the program setup. That way if you have issues decoding during TX you can always replay to the decoder later. Also you can try different decoders and settings to see which produces the best image. Canadian Grid Trip...

Starting this Saturday July 15th, my wife and I are taking a trip through southern Ontario on our way to Niagara Falls. I plan on activating grids along the way. Gridders, I'll be roving to FN12 & FN22 tomorrow 7/12 from late afternoon and into the evening. My plan is to use the FO29, SO50 & XW2 Birds. On the linear SATs, you should hear me somewhat up the bandpass. On SO50, I'm hoping I'll able to finish a QSO or two (!). Here is the answer I got to my inquiry about bringing ham radio gear on board. It looks like blanket permission since in "Exemptions and Other Considerations" it states "Permitted to be used on board" Since the ship is registered in Panama all I need to do is contact the ARRL for my IARP Permit. Its been 4 years. K2BSA's going back to Summit Bechtel for the 2017 National Scouting Jamboree in Beckley WV, we arrive this weekend to begin building the station. Help us show off Amateur Radio to the many (25,000) scouts at the Jamboree. We'll be on the FM and linear satellites. I have available a spare 16 turn RHCP 1.2Ghz helix for sale. Aluminum reflector, stainless steel support, UV protected PVC supports, It was a spare I was going to use on AO-40 (sobsob). It is home brew and about 80% complete. I can finish it up in a few hours if anyone is interested in it. I can provided pictures and details. APRS, AM and the solar Eclipse

There will be several Ham Radio experiments during the eclipse. Please see: http://HamSCI.org Anyone can do the AM radio experiment by listening for the 13 clear channel AM radio stations that are along the path of totality. As the D layer is darkened these stations should come up out of the noise. Check the web page for times and frequencies. The eclipse traverses the USA over about an hour with any one observer seeing totality for about 2 minutes. Also, APRS will be used during the day of the eclipse (21 Aug) for locating those hams involved in eclipse observations to be able to see where other nearby ham observers are located. Imagine the APRS map that day showing a clustering of mobile and portable positions all along the totality line. Please use the station symbol SUNNY (\U) for this event so these stations will stand out among all others on the national tracking page http://aprs.fi In addition to position reporting, APRS real-time messaging can be used for direct station-to-station texting plus the announcement server will give national connectivity for announcements. To use it, just send an APRS message to ANSRVR and begin the message with CQ ECLIPSE… Such a message will be sent to every other station in the event that has also sent a similar message. Hi friends, I will be able to activate grids KO10 and JO94 from Poland during the next days in SO-50. Maybe it is possible that I activate other ones in my route between both grids as well. More less it will be: KO10 -> Between days 13, 16 July JO94 -> Between days 17, 25 July Also it might be possible some grid from Sweden in a short trip, but I don't think it is really probable. I think you may be missing something: "The following items are prohibited and their possession is not allowed on board any Company ship by passengers or crew without a valid lawful reason....and only with consent of the Ship's Master." Emphasis on: 'without a valid lawful reason' and 'only with consent'. Do you have a valid lawful reason for possessing a ham radio (or a laser pointer)? Then it may be okay. And that's what they are telling you in the second link that lists exemptions to those prohibitions. 'It's okay for ham radio use on board... but not for you to use to listen to the crew conduct ships business, talk to other ships in the harbor, and so on.' That way they can speak to the issue of your activities of such gear, not just the fact of possession of it. This is legalese so that someone can't just bring anything on board they want, claim it's ham radio (or in the case of a laser pointer, claim it's for a fictitious power point presentation), and claim a right of possession. They are saying to anyone/everyone... 'We don't let you bring these things on board willy nilly without a reason and if we don't like your reason, we can boot your stuff off the boat and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it; you have no recourse.' I believe the term 'exerting positive control' is used in other professions for such a situation... 73 and enjoy your cruise! Kevin N4UFO

As I was reading the "Carnival Corporation Prohibited Items <https://help.carnival.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4090> " list I found this line; "Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), ham radios, satellite phones, transformers, lasers and laser pointers". With all the heightened security these days I figured they had decided to add ham gear to their list. Nova for Windows

For anybody who is considering downloading the now free version now made available by Michael Owen, (See quoted email below), be aware that if you are going to be running this program on Windows 7 or 10, you will have to use Windows Compatibility settings to make the program think it running in a Windows XP environment. After that, it will run pretty much as it did on XP machines. Windows 10's Compatibility wizard will try and set it up as Windows 7 but you should manually set the program to execute under Windows XP Service Pack 2 mode to make it go. July 9, 2017 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-190.01 ARISS Celebrates it’s 20th Anniversary through SSTV Event In commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of ARISS, a Slow Scan Television (SSTV) event is planned for Thursday, July 20 starting around 21:25 UTC. The event plans to feature images from ARISS activities both past and present. This opportunity should cover most of the world during the operation period. The event plans to use a computer on the ISS Russian Segment, which stores images that are then transmitted to Earth using the ham radio, specifically the onboard Kenwood TM D710 transceiver. Those receiving the images can post them at https://ariss-sstv.blogspot.com/ for viewing by the public. The 20 year history of ARISS will be displayed through a collection of 12 unique images sharing the amazing accomplishments of ARISS over the last two decades. SSTV signals will be sent to earth at 145.80 MHz using FM. The SSTV mode of transmission is expected to be PD 120 (PD 180 may be a second option). The event is expected to continue over a two day period. Since it’s inception, Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has provided students an opportunity, through ham radio, to engage in conversation with orbiting astronauts and inspired many to seek careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Consider how you might inspire students in your area through this chance to capture images directly from space to their computers. Chris is the ARRL Oklahoma Sectin Traffic Manager and recently completed his Masters degree in IT. Chris currently holds a General class license and is very interested in public service, digital modes, and mesh networks. He is active in his local club and the ARRL. His plans in the hobby include completing a C.E.R.T. course, updating both his First Aid and CPR, and completing additional FEMA EMI and A.R.R.L. EMCOMM courses. He is currently studying for the amateur extra class license exam and hopes to soon update his ARRL VE creditials and instructor status so as to further the hobby along. The IARU reports the satellites will be using CW, 1k2 AFSK FM, audio FM and 9k6 GMSK downlinks on a coordinated downlink frequency of 437.375 MHz. CDT, Monday, July 10, 2017. This is earlier than the due date for the ARRL submissions. The preferred method for submitting your log is via e-mail to kk5do at amsat dot org or kk5do at arrl dot net. Whereas it is too late to use the postal service for your results to arrive by the submission date, feel free to send photographs or other interesting information that can be used in an article for the Journal. You will receive an email back (within one or two days) from me when I receive your email submission. If you do not receive a confirmation message, then I have not received your submission. A station submitting high, award-winning scores will be requested to send in dupe sheets for analog contacts and message listings for digital downloads. You may have multiple rig difficulties, antenna failures, computer glitches, generator disasters, tropical storms, and there may even be satellite problems, but the goal is to test your ability to operate in an emergency situation. Try different gear. Demonstrate satellite operations to hams that don't even know the HAMSATS exist. Test your equipment. In addition to cosmetic updates, this represents a significant upgrade of AMSAT's online capabilities. The website and store are now fully integrated with the AMSAT membership database, allowing the eventual implementation of features such as members-only content and digital distribution of The AMSAT Journal. In addition, members may now change their mailing address for delivery of The AMSAT Journal and determine when their membership expires via their online accounts. All current AMSAT members and former members whose membership expired within the past five years have accounts on the online website. These accounts are not linked to previous AMSAT store accounts, but are based on information in the AMSAT membership database. If you are a current member, or former member whose membership has expired within the past five years, please do not create a new account on the AMSAT website. Follow these steps to create a password: 1. Click the "My Account" button located on the upper right hand corner of any page on the website. 2. Click "Lost your password?" beneath the login button. 3. Enter your callsign and click reset password. 4. Eric, KV1J, will once again be operating from the Island of Miquelon (NA-032, DIFO FP-002 WLOTA 1417, Grid GN17) as FP/KV1J between July 4-18th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters using CW, SSB, RTTY (but primarily SSB and RTTY) and the satellites. He will generally be on the highest frequency band that is open (favoring 12/10m). He will be active in the IARU HF Contest (July 8-9th), NA QSO Party-RTTY (July 15-16th) and the CQ VHF Contest [6M only] (July 15- 16th). ADDED NOTE: Eric, reported this week, "I will try to be on as many Satellite passes as I can when the WX is good. I am in a new (new to me) apartment and not sure which way the windows face. It is either west or north. If they face west, I can try some passes when it get dark or the WX is not good. Otherwise, I will be outside with my pair of FT817s and an Arrow antenna. [ANS thanks the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 1320 for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Amateur and Amateur-Satellite Services Access to Full 76-81 GHz Band on a Secondary Basis In a draft Report and Order (ET Docket No. 15-26) to be considered at its July 13 open meeting, the FCC is proposing to lift a nearly 2- decade-old suspension of Amateur Radio access to 76-77 GHz, giving the Amateur and Amateur-Satellite services access to the full 76-81 GHz band on a secondary basis. The FCC also reduced Amateur Radio’s status from primary to secondary in the 77-77.5 GHz segment, to match the rest of the 76-81 GHz band, and it imposed a uniform power-level limit for users of the band. The draft Report and Order (R&O) concludes that Amateur Radio and vehicular radars will be able to successfully share the millimeter-wave band with minor adjustments in the Amateur Service rules. A goal of the proceeding has been to expand and consolidate the spectrum available worldwide for 76-81 GHz radar operations. It brings the US Table of Allocations into line with decisions at the 2015 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC- 15) and makes the entire band available internationally for vehicular radars operating in the Radiolocation Service (RLS). The FCC said its proposal “received significant support” and no opposition from commenters regarding the proposed allocation. “The rule changes we adopt modifying the regulatory status of amateur stations and capping their power levels will ensure the continued operation of amateur stations in this band, and are a reasonable alternative to expanding the suspension of amateur operations from the 76-77 GHz band to the remainder of the 76-81 GHz band or removing the amateur allocations altogether from the 76-81 GHz band,” the draft R&O said. “In addition, these changes, coupled with the nature of amateur operations in the band (e.g., largely experimental, occurring temporarily on mountaintops and locations where motor vehicle operation is not typical, and using antennas mounted on masts as high as practical), will ensure that the potential for harmful interference from amateur operations to vehicular radar operations in the 76-81 GHz band is negligible and satisfy our efforts to ensure protection for the important safety functions that vehicular radars will provide.” The FCC R&O would impose a 55 dBm peak effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) limit (316 W EIRP) on Amateur operations in the band. This is the same as that allowed to vehicular radars. The R&O reasons that the risk for potential interference between Amateur Radio operation and RLS operations “is mitigated by the directionality of vehicular radars’ antennas — downward in orientation and mounted on a low position on the vehicles.” The R&O also cites the periodic and transient nature of amateur operations in the band coupled with high path losses in a band that is conducive to frequency re-use. In reaching its tentative conclusions in the proceeding relative to the Amateur allocation, the FCC considered the comments of several individual radio amateurs as well as ARRL, Bosch, Delphi, the Automotive Safety Council, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), and automakers and their representatives, among others. Several automotive manufacturers had asked that Amateur Radio be ousted from the band.
