An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Heart of America Council Boy Scouts of America, Kansas City, MO on 23 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:03 UTC. It is recommended that you start listening approximately 10 minutes before this time.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Scouting 500 is a Council wide event of the Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America. The Council serves 29,830 youth and 14,255 adult leaders in the 17 bordering Missouri and Kansas counties which constitute the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. We expect 12,000 to 14,000 boys and their adult leaders and parents. The Scouting 500 is taking place on the grounds of the NASCAR Kansas Speedway. In the infield of the track we will have 114 different activities for the attendees. That of course includes a demonstration NASCAR Stock Car race with 5 regular NASCAR cars and their drivers. More on the Scouting line we have a large artificial trout pool where the boys can tie their own flies and practice casting. Another tank will conduct scuba lessons. There will be custom cars, bb guns, a hot air balloon, go carts, archery, scout skills and of course a substantial STEM area. The highlight of our STEM program is the ARISS contact. The contact will be a part of the STEM-Amateur Radio Exhibit. The exhibit includes educational displays about amateur, a morse code station where the Scouts can practice sending and receiving their name and unit number to one another and other information about the International Space Station. Key to the exhibit are radio stations manned with licensed operators each operating in one of several different modes. We will have VHF\UHF featuring repeater usage, APRS and ECHOLINK. We will have HF stations running CW, SSB, JT65 and remote and other digital modes. Our call sign is K2BSA/0. We look forward to working the ISS. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What was purpose of the last spacewalk and did you get to go on it? 2. For boosting the space station's orbit, what is typically used if not Zarya? 3. If someone gets hurt or sick who gives them first aid? 4. What have you done for entertainment that is unique to do in space? 5. How do you exercise on the space station and how do your muscles feel in gravity? 6. What is your current experiment and why is it best done in space? 7. Can you make out cities from space at night? 8. What is your favorite meal and how is it prepared? 9. What is the next big thing in space exploration in your opinion? 10. What got you interested in being an astronaut? 11. How difficult is it to get used to gravity once you come back to earth? 12. How long does it take to get to the station from earth? 13. What is the best type of college degree to get to become an astronaut? 14. Is being weightless like swimming under water? It seems you move slowly. 15. Do you find it hard to sleep with so much going on around you all the time? 16. September 21 is the first opportunity to participate in an ARISS School Contact webinar ... --- International Space Station Astronauts are Calling CQ Students ARISS-US program education proposal deadline is November 15, 2017 September 18, 2017: The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program is seeking proposals from U.S. schools, museums, science centers and community youth organizations to host radio contacts with an orbiting crew member aboard the International Space Station (ISS) between July 1 and December 31, 2018. Each year, ARISS provides tens of thousands of students with oppor- tunities to learn about space technologies and space communications through the exploration of Amateur Radio. The program provides learning opportunities by connecting students to astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) through a partnership between NASA, the American Radio Relay League, the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation and other Amateur Radio organizations and worldwide space agencies. The program's goal is to inspire students worldwide, to pursue interests and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through Amateur Radio. Educators overwhelmingly report that student participation in the ARISS program inspires an interest in STEM subjects and in STEM careers. Ninety-two percent of educators who have participated in the program have indicated that ARISS provided ideas for encourag- ing student exploration, discussion, and participation, and 78 percent said that ARISS was effective in stimulating student interest in STEM. Scott, the reason is because Direwolf required one flipped bit to fully decode the packet (ie, it didn't "hear" the correct bits, but tried flipping each single bit until what it decoded passed the checksum). That "[SINGLE]" means that it swapped a single bit to get a correct checksum. Direwolf WILL NOT pass ANY packets on to the APRS-IS unless it completely decodes the packet correctly (ie, that section should say [NONE], as in "no bits were flipped in order to get the checksum to work). Help me understand my iGate?

Hi everyone. I've been trying to improve the effectiveness of the SDR iGate that I have listening on 145.825 and am finally seeing more packets. Since duplicates don't show up on ariss.net, that explains why not all my received packets show up on the website. Just for my own education, I'll often compare what my iGate receives from the ISS or PSAT to what shows up on ariss.net to verify that mine are in fact duplicates. Today on a PSAT pass I noticed that one of my received packets was a duplicate (which is fine) but the other packet that I received was also NOT on the website. So, now we're not talking about a duplicate - it didn't get accepted to the site for some other reason. Here's the packet as I received it. I'm guessing that the issue is that it wasn't digipeated by a station ID of "ARISS*", but I'd like to know for sure. Rich - LoTW accepts FT8 now. My Mac logging program doesn’t have built-in digital mode identifications for anything beyond RTTY BUT it allows you to type “JT65” or “FT8” which is then sent along to LoTW. AO-7 Status

Just a note that AO-7 has been reliably in Mode B for the past several days. For the past several months, AO-7 has had a tendency to flip from Mode B to Mode A even in the presence of only modest uplink signals, likely due to poor illumination on the solar panels. As the seasons have progressed, it appears that the illumination situation has improved. Get on and make some QSOs! This would be a particularly good time to set up skeds for extreme range QSOs. According to DK3WN's illum software, from October 15th through November 21st, AO-7 will be in constant sunlight. During this period, the 24 hour timer will function and the satellite will spend 24 hours in Mode B then 24 hours in Mode A. Get those 10 meter antennas ready! 73, Paul, N8HM

LVB Tracker to SATPC32

I have not been able to get the LVB Tracker to talk to SATPC32 in my IC-9100. I am using a Keyspan USA 19HS USB-to-serial adapter between the LVB Tracker and my laptop (Windows 8, 64 bits). When I start the SATPC32 program, I get an error message "Port 1 could not be found". According to the device manager in my PC, the Keyspan 19HS has COM2 assigned. I selected COM2 for rotor setting. I think I am supposed to select the same COM2 for ServerSDX. But, I never get ServerSDX box on the screen. Appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks. George N3GS

The trio launched aboard the Soyuz MS-06 spacecraft from Kazakhstan, orbited Earth four times, and then docked at the space station. The hatches between the spacecraft and station opened early on September 13. The arrival of Vande Hei, Acaba, and Misurkin restores the station's crew to six.
