A bit OT, but a question comes to mind: Oregon is currently under a Huge Smoke Cloud from forest fires.(pretty much the entire State). Here is So Oregon, visibility is 1/2 mile and ceiling at the airport is 2200. Ash particulate is falling and visible to the eye. Message sent to Voyager 1 - 40th anniversary

Captain Kirk, William Shatner, gave the command to send the 40th anniversary message to Voyager 1 from NASA's control center. The message was submitted by Oliver Jenkins and chosen by a committee. The message consisted of 448 bits of info, transmitted by the 70 meter dish in Madrid Spain. It took 28 seconds to sent at a rate of 16 bits/second. It will travel 12.9 billion miles to reach Voyager's position in interstellar space. It will take 19.25 hours, traveling at the speed of light to reach Voyager 1. The message is: "We offer friendship across the stars. You are not alone". The message was transmitted at 17:20:01 UTC, 1:20:01 PM EDT. Satellite presentations/demos for clubs in central North Carolina?

I've done a club presentation (and attempted demo) on satellites at one club in western-central NC this year, and have another one scheduled in about 10 days at a second club (and currently working out the logistics for a third club in western NC in October). At the Shelby NC Hamfest two days ago, I was approached by a member of still another club - and was introduced to someone else from yet another club - about doing satellite presentations for those clubs - no time table, could even be done next year.. Both of the latter are in the Charlotte area; one meets on the first Monday night of each month, and the other on the third Monday night. I'm willing to do both, but I was wondering if there was someone more centrally located in NC who might want to pick up the gauntlet! I'm near Asheville; one of them is at best 2 hours away, and the other 2.5-2.75 hours away. I've been doing these as a Satellite 101 course, and I'll be glad to share with you the documents I've created (which you are free to modify); one being a short Word document on how/where to listen (and track) the FM birds and ISS, and an approximately 25 slide PowerPoint giving more background and discussing transmitting to both FM/ISS and the analog birds. PSAT (NO-84) 2m Packet Performance?

Hi everyone! For the past few days, with no changes to my setup, I am receiving a LOT more 2m packets from PSAT and it seems to be receiving me a lot better as well. Since I’m fairly new to all this, I was just wondering if this has happened periodically in the past? Depending on ??? factors, does the digipeater on that particular satellite hear & transmit better in some kind of cycle? Oh, and it’s not just me... numerous call signs are showing up on the website as successful digipeats. Thanks! -Scott, K4KDR

K2BSA/5 on SO-50 Tuesday evening

All, Weather permitting, please be looking for K2BSA/5 on SO-50 Tuesday evening, September 5, 7:11P CDT (9/6 0011Z) as we demonstrate amateur radio satellite communications to a Scout troop in the DFW Metroplex, EM12. Control operator for the pass will be Eagle Scout Alexander Pritchard, KG5GKQ. Please look out for the K2BSA/5 call and give us a shout and maybe stoke some excitement to these young people. This is a 60+ degree pass to the east so almost all of the US should be in the footprint. Since Alexander has never actually done the satellite thing with himself as the lead, we are going to do a practice run tonight 9/4 on a 6:45P (2345Z) SO-50 pass and I will have him use his own call on this one, KG5GKQ. Be patient with the guy as he will be nervous I am sure. This is a lower elevation for us, 22 degrees to the east so the QRM might be heavy. We will be running a little power, probably 25 watts which should help. Look for us on the air for these two passes and give a shout to the respective calls. The story of how Melbourne University Students built Australia's first satellite has been written and the publication is about to be launched. This is on the eve of students at the same university building a nano-satellite ready for space next year. The Wireless Institute of Australia is assisting the project with IARU frequency and other coordination. A member of the university engineering faculty class of 1968 and leading the student team that built Australis was Dr Owen Mace, who has written a definitive book. The satellite went into orbit in January 1970 operating successfully for nearly two months before its batteries ran out of power. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at West Virginia University, Lane Dept.of Computer Science & Electrical Engineering, Morgantown, WV on 04 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:50 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and W8CUL. The contact should be audible over the state of West Virginia, USA and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Amateur Radio Club at WVU has existed since 1912, making it one of the oldest student organization at WVU. They provide students a testbed to conduct various experiments such as satellite and digital communications, radio astronomy and drone development. They are housed within the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, which provides educational programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, and biometric systems. WVU is a land grant university and is the largest educational institution in the state. Follow-up on EN45/EN46 trip

We are back from working stations from EN45 (10 QSOs) and EN46 (15 QSOs). All contacts are now uploaded to LOTW. For my call I used "NR0T", with no suffix of any kind. I know for sure of two busted calls. If you find that your QSO with me is not in LOTW, please send me an email with the QSO details and I will check to see if it is one of the calls I busted. I had connector problems from EN45 on the 1409z pass of FO-29 and only worked 3 stations. The 1553z pass from EN46 was much better with 15 QSOs and 3 to 4 per minute at times. We then returned to EN45 and tried AO85 (4 QSOs) at 1731z and UKUBE1 at 1932 (2 QSOs). Many thanks to my wife, Taty, OA4ABC, who was the "Armstrong brand" antenna rotator while I worked the rig. We used an Arrow antenna, a pair of FT897Ds and SatPC32. VUCC Awards/Endorsements for August 2017

The August Satellite VUCC Awards/Endorsements listing will be delayed. On or about August 15th, 2017, the ARRL website stopped posting the VUCC standings for satellites as well as all other bands. The problem was referred to the ARRL Awards Manager and she referred the problem to the ARRL IT Group. Once the problem is resolved and the postings start up again a list will be generated and posted to the amsat-bb.
