ARISS Contact Applications (United States) Message to US Educators Amateur Radio on the International Space Station Contact Opportunity Call for Proposals New Proposal Window is October 1, 2019 to November 30, 2019 The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program is seeking formal and informal education institutions and organizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radio contact with a crew member on board the ISS. ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between July 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. The deadline to submit a proposal is November 30, 2019. Proposal information and documents can be found at https://www.ariss.org . The Opportunity Crew members aboard the International Space Station will participate in scheduled Amateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes in length and allow students to interact with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session. An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms and communities. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:24 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and ground stations I1LJV and IZ2MCC. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. "Ciampini-Boccardo" Our school, the Secondary School "Ciampini-Boccardo" of Novi Ligure, was founded in 2010 by the merger of two pre-existing schools in town: the Secondary School "G: Boccardo" and the Secondary School "G. Ciampini. The school "G. Boccardo" offered education for administrative professions, while the school "G. Ciampini" offered education for technical professions. Immediately before and after the merger, the school has grown significantly and so now students are offered a richer field of choices. AO-85 getting sicker?

This morning on the 1345Z pass, the satellite AO-85 had a severe amplitude wobble every 15 secs and also a frequency wobble of several kHz. I had seen both before but this pass had them both. Friday/Saturday MDT Rover Trip

RJ, WY7AA and I will be roving this Friday and Saturday in Wyoming and NW Colorado. Will start mid-morning (MDT) Friday on both linear and FM sats and hope to find a number of lines and corners. DN 61/62/71/72 + DN 52/62 + overnighting in DN61. Saturday may find the DN 50/51/60/61 and maybe DN 60/61/70/71 corners. At very least we’ll be on ‘interesting’ grid lines with DN50 (Saturday) being the most needed grid. Hi- Just encountered problem, if I key the tx at high power fm/cw the rig shuts down momentarily. At half power it operates normally this only on 2M uhf/L ok. Ideas anyone? thanks & 73 Bob W7LRD

Mathematics, physics, and science are the cornerstone of high school education. Attention to the scientific dissemination, participation in maths, sciences, and the current school year, including physics, characterizes our institute that has had important results with participation also in national finals. In our school there is an association (Gruppo SIGMA Studenti e Insegnanti del Gullace per la Matematica) of pupils and former students who have distinguished themselves in mathematics: we could certainly organize the event with the help of the association. We could invite to the event in the main hall students who will demonstrate the intention to participate in the project and who will find out during the year, among the pupils of the three years, until the 80 seats are filled up. I.S.I.S. " Zaccagna - Galilei" sede "G. Galilei" The mission of the State High School Galilei, part of I.S.I.S. Zaccagna, is « value the person », through an educational process built for the person and therefore the society. The school focuses on guiding the students in their future choices, both of study and work, but mostly on the greatest non-material asset available : the person as human capital, with his culture, value and knowledge. The two main goals are there for evaluing the person in all his potential, and professional qualification. The building hosting the event includes a Maths and Science High School and the Industrial and Technical State High School Galilei, with students aged between 14 and 20. About 40 students from the Telecommunication course will be directly involved in the project (16-20 years old), while the connection might be extended to the entire learning centre, that includes about 1000 students ; it might also be possible for the local population to attend the event. I am headed to FK93lu today. Once I am there I will scan the topography for elevations and refine the SAT passes I plan on being on. The area does have some mountains in directions TBD that are slightly higher than the already high QTH. I have updated my J6/AA4FL QRZ page and will try to do so regularly during the trip. ARISS Contact Applications (United States) Message to US Educators Amateur Radio on the International Space Station Contact Opportunity Call for Proposals New Proposal Window is October 1, 2019 to November 30, 2019 The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program is seeking formal and informal education institutions and organizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radio contact with a crew member on board the ISS. ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between July 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. The deadline to submit a proposal is November 30, 2019. Proposal information and documents can be found at https://www.ariss.org . The Opportunity Crew members aboard the International Space Station will participate in scheduled Amateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes in length and allow students to interact with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session. An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and to learn about space research conducted on the ISS. Bricsat-2 telemetry howto?

Had some strong signals from Bricsat-2 today with its 9600 bps telemetry signal. Couldn't get any decodes with my usual Direwolf setup (the one I use for Falconsat-3) and apart from being advertised as 9600 bps there is not much more information about the modem. The signal is also awfully wide: 20 kHz. Does anyone know more about how to decode this? All tips are welcome. 73 de Hans BX2ABT

I am so honored to be elected by the AMSAT Board of Directors to be the AMSAT Treasurer and reelected to be the AMSAT Vice-President of User Services, as well as reappointed as the Director of AMSAT Ambassadors by the AMSAT President. Thank you for your confidence in me. I am humbled. This is a lot of hats to wear, along with my full-time job, but I look forward to the challenge. I believe in AMSAT's mission and have a wonderful team of volunteers to assist me. I am excited to announce that there are major improvements coming for our AMSAT members in the near future. The AMSAT Board of Directors approved my recommendations for an internet-based, member management system, the transition to a digitally delivered, full-color AMSAT Journal, and a complete overhaul of our AMSAT website. I have been putting together these proposals for several months and thank the Board of Directors for the permission to move these projects forward. These improvements will modernize how AMSAT serves you. I hope that you will be as impressed with them as I am. The member management system puts you in control of your membership account, allowing you to update your contact information, pay your dues, and register for events in real time. In addition, the program will automatically push out reminders, newsletters, and a digital copy of the AMSAT Journal. Transitioning to a digitally-delivered, AMSAT Journal will allow us to provide a full-color magazine, without raising the cost of membership. In addition, we will have to opportunity to provide member-only content on our website, to include back issues of our AMSAT Journal. Lastly, we will be working on a complete overhaul of our AMSAT website. Over the years, our website has received several facelifts, and, in the process, it has become somewhat disjointed. Our goal is to make the navigation more intuitive and offer the content you deserve. The front of the website will focus on external visitors, explaining who we are, what we do, and what we have to offer. We will also have portals for our members and friends in the AMSAT community, how to guides on getting started in amateur radio satellites, and all the important information about current satellites you will need to work them. AMSAT’s User Services is committed to serving AMSAT members and the AMSAT community and to deliver the quality services you deserve as we move forward into the next 50 years of Keeping Amateur Radio is Space! Day 1 of SAT ops in St. Lucia was enjoyable but not as productive as I would have liked. AO-7 was in mode A and FO-29 was not awake. Even SO-50 misbehaved, only hearing KC9ELU for a moment. Frans J69DS joined me at Ft. Rodney on Pigeon Island and made Q's on AO-91, along with Ian J66CD. Check my qrz J6/AA4FL page after 0300 URC for changes to my schedule. Going to team up with Frans and Ian tomorrow at his high elevation QTH. Will be looking to focus more on AO-91 and AO-92 as the FM birds. Speaking at the 37th Annual Space Symposium, Alan reports that since the prototype Cubesat Simulators were introduced at Hamvention in May, 2019, the simulators have undergone testing and final release. Among the schools testing the simulators was Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia. Science and Engineering teacher Melissa Pore presented to the symposium audience her experience with using a simulator in one of her engineering clubs and how her student benefitted from their use. A Cubesat Simulator is a self-contained satellite model that reports solar cell performance via standard AFSK 1200 BPS AX.25 telemetry. The telemetry can be decoded with a simple SDR ground station. A Cubesat Simulator package consists of the 1U simulator, a halogen work light to simulate sunshine, and a motorized rotating turntable that mimics the satellite tumbling through space. The four loaner packages are packed and shipped in a hard case. The simulator is shipped prepaid while the user pays return shipping. Last week a number of "N"s were present in a few TLEs which caused some programs to reject those TLEs. Note: Some (but not all) of the raw TLEs from SpaceTrack have plus signs (+) which are not necessary. All plus signs (+) in the TLEs are routinely changed to a blank space. Last week all plus signs were incorrectly changed to the letter "N". This was due to a change in the formatting program and a typing error that substituted a "N" instead of a single blank space everytime a plus sign was present. That problem has been corrected and should not be an issue in the future. (ANS thanks Spaceflight Now for the above information) + Possibly related to the previous news item, LeoLabs announced that they plan to build four additional radar installations for tracking space debris. Their current installations can track objects down to about a 10 cm diameter, but with their new installations they’ll theoretically be able to track objects as small as 2 cm. In general, current radar systems tend to be limited on the lower end to objects in the 5-10 cm range. Systems like LeoLabs’ and the U.S. Air Force’s upcoming Marshall Islands-based Space Fence will improve coverage, but still won’t see the 128 million objects from 1 mm to 1 cm, which have the potential to disable or completely destroy a satellite. Jamboree on the Air this weekend.

This weekend is the annual World Scouting "Jamboree on the Air" operating event. It is the largest annual Scouting activity worldwide. There will be hundreds of JOTA activations in North America alone, some, like me, will be helping Scouts make satellite contacts. If you hear stations on the birds this weekend that are working JOTA, do make it a point to work them and give them space to work as well. Scouts find our activities making satellite contacts fascinating and some have gotten hooked on the hobby through demos and activations like JOTA. I will be operating with N5EOC (NE Tarrant County ARC club call), at the Longhorn Council HQ facility in Hurst Texas during the day Saturday the 19th. I am sure besides Scouts coming to visit the event, there will be HQ staff as well and our operation, including Amateur Satellites, may be the first exposure to the hobby for some. Allen, Right now it's only AO-92, which is in L/v mode for 24 hours once a week (currently commanded at 0000UT wed , Tues evening in the US, but you knew that). I use an Alinco DG-7J for the uplink, and an TF-8900R o down link. Uplink antenna is a 10 element yagi I got off eBay (link Below). The Alinco is 1 watt max on 1.2ghz, which according to a few online calculators I'm getting about 7watts EIRP, which works. The Problem With "n" In Some TLE Sets of the 10-10-19 AMSAT TLE Distribution.

To All: I think I have figured out what is going on with the "n's" in the TLEs last week. I have a substitution protocol in my process that replaces "+" with " " (i.e. a blank). For some reason that protocol failed last week and inserted a "n" instead. I am going to resolve that issue tonight when I create this week's TLE distribution. That process has worked flawlessly for twenty some years, but apparently something has been corrupted???? I will resolve it tonight. Sorry for the "n" substitution issue, but thanks for the "heads up". I have been out of pocket this week and just read though my emails. FYI. Tonight is my 37th Wedding Anniversary Dinner so the TLEs may be a little late this week. (My wife will want her anniversary dinner, period! In this she out ranks me.) But I will get it done. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:27 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and ground stations IQ3RW in Campolongo Maggiore, Italy and IK0WGF in Ladispoli, Italy . The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. Story: Istituto Comprensivo Statale "Diego Valeri": The Institute is located in the province of Venice on the border with that of Padua. It is a municipality with a very large territory and is covered, scholastically, by a school for children, three plexuses of primary school and two middle schools. The Institute boasts the best musical laboratory in Italy and almost all of the students are able, not only to engage in the study of a musical instrument and to read music but also to play in an orchestra. The students involved are middle school pupils with ages between 12 and 14 years. Istituto Comprensivo Ladispoli1: The I.C.Ladispoli1 is one of the four Institutes including Ladispoli, a metropolitan city of capital Rome26 teachers work in the Infancy school; school time is 25 hours weekly for the reduced-time sections (8.05-13.05) and 40 hours per week for all the other sections in normal time (8.05-16.05). 83 teachers work in the Primary School; school time is 25 hours per week for the normal time sections (8.05-13.05) and 40 hours per week for all the others full-time sections (8.05-16.05).The Secondary Secondary School is still "young", but growing: it is composed of the classes of classes A and B. ARISS Contact Applications (United States) Message to US Educators Amateur Radio on the International Space Station Contact Opportunity Call for Proposals New Proposal Window is October 1, 2019 to November 30, 2019 The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program is seeking formal and informal education institutions and organizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radio contact with a crew member on board the ISS. ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between July 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. The deadline to submit a proposal is November 30, 2019. Proposal information and documents can be found at https://www.ariss.org . The Opportunity Crew members aboard the International Space Station will participate in scheduled Amateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes in length and allow students to interact with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session. An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and to learn about space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will have an opportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless technology, and radio science. Because of the nature of human spaceflight and the complexity of scheduling activities aboard the ISS, organizations must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changes in dates and times of the radio contact. Amateur Radio organizations around the world with the support of NASA and space agencies in Russia, Canada, Japan and Europe present educational organizations with this opportunity. The ham radio organizations' volunteer efforts provide the equipment and operational support to enable communication between crew on the ISS and students around the world using Amateur Radio. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Science & Technologie e.V. / event: Science Days, Teningen, Germany on 17 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:03 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and DN1EME. The contact should be audible over Germany and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Story: Science Days The Science Days is the first German science festival, which was founded in 2001. Around 15.000 students of different school levels attend this science festival every year. The Science Days are located in Germany's biggest family park "Europa-Park" in Rust and are organized by Science & Technologie e.V., a non-profit organization. GHSE School The questions for the contact come from students of GHSE. GHSE stands for "Gewerbliche und Hauswirtschaftlich-Sozialpflegerische Schulen Emmendingen" in Germany and offers education with a special vocational focus on industry, ecotrophology as well as applied social sciences. The industry-focused part of the school was already founded in 1836 and has since been evolving into a wide variety of educational directions for all sorts of students with all kinds of different talents and interests. Our campus includes a large workshop-area. GHSE offers educational qualification ranging from a "Hauptschulabschluss" (certificate of secondary education) up to the "Abitur" (general qualification for university entrance) and is also a vocational college within the German dual education system. There are currently around 2100 enrolled students at GHSE. 45% of them attend the "Berufsschule" (vocational college). Around 16% are found in the applied social sciences field. The rest is distributed among other areas such as care-giving, information technology, management, mechatronics and several other fields. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Can you describe what the feeling when the rocket was launched? 2. What were your first impressions when you arrived at the ISS? 3. How did your family react when they learned about your trip into space? 4. Which time zone are you using on ISS and do night and day light changes play a role at all for your working day? 5. How does it feel to float in space and how do you like zero gravity? 6. We've heard that there are no windows in direction of outer space. Why is that and how does it feel like to see the stars from the station or during an outdoor mission? 7. The laws of which country are applicable in the ISS and in general there in space and do you have to pay tax for the money you earn in space? Who pays your wages? 8. Are there any scientific discoveries or important experiments which have been recently made? 9. Can see you visible changes occurring through the climate change? 10. Who makes decisions regarding, for example, who is allowed to do a space-walk? The space agencies or the commander? 11. Have you or another astronaut ever lost something on the ISS? 12. Do you think the Bosch reactor will be successfully implemented soon and how will it affect the ISS? 13. What do you think about space tourism? 14. Are private conversations with your family also allowed or do all conversations have to be carried out through the space agencies? 15. Was it worth it to put so much work into aerospace, now where you see the results or are you disappointed? 16. What is the weirdest thing you have on the ISS? 17. What do you do in order to prevent injuries and what medical equipment do you use in the case of an emergency? 18. What did you regret or miss when you flew into space? 19. What was the biggest damage you had to repair in the ISS and what happens with an ISS module if it's irreparably damaged?
