ARISS Contact Applications (United States) Message to US Educators Amateur Radio on the International Space Station Contact Opportunity Call for Proposals New Proposal Window is October 1, 2019 to November 30, 2019 The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program is seeking formal and informal education institutions and organizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radio contact with a crew member on board the ISS. ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between July 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. The deadline to submit a proposal is November 30, 2019. Proposal information and documents can be found at https://www.ariss.org . The Opportunity Crew members aboard the International Space Station will participate in scheduled Amateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes in length and allow students to interact with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session. An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and to learn about space research conducted on the ISS. Because of the nature of human spaceflight and the complexity of scheduling activities aboard the ISS, organizations must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changes in dates and times of the radio contact. problem with 'n' characters in TLE data

I made changes in my TLE-doctor, small utility for TLE data corrections. It has now button for removing n characters from TLE = it replace 'n' by space or '-' and compute new checksums. Just copy incorrect TLE data with cut-paste into the edit field and push button to get corrected data. Its all. web page: http://www.ok2gz.eu/TLEdoctor/ New program has decoder, which shows some parameters taken from TLE - as axis length, period, revolutions per day, period of change positions between apo and perigeum (it is usefull for orbits as FO-29), estimation of max. qso length for orbit height in apogee and perigee, etc. 73 jarda ok2gz -- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG. https://www.avg.com

The latest nasabare.txt and nasa.all TLE files are downloading with the character "n" in place of blanks and or "-" SatPC32 is forgiving of this, but other software like Zeptomoby Orbit Tools is not. For those of you who don’t know me, I am somewhat new to amateur radio satellites and AMSAT. My first experience with amateur satellites was listening to the ARISSat-1 voice beacon and decoding its SSTV images in August 2011. In September 2012, I made my first satellite QSOs (on AO-27) and joined AMSAT. In 2015, I was elected Secretary by the AMSAT Board of Directors; and, in 2017, I was elected Executive Vice President. I also have served as both an alternate and a regular member of the board. As I write this in late September, getting ready for the upcoming Symposium, summer refuses to yield to the cooler air of fall here in Washington, D.C. I hope the weather will be more comfortable for the Symposium in nearby Arlington, VA, in a few weeks. In mid-September, we received the fantastic news that Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC) awarded a very generous grant to ARISS for the InterOperable Radio System (IORS) and related infrastructure. ARDC is the owner and manager of the Internet network known as the AMPRNet. In June 2019, ARDC initiated a philanthropic endeavor to provide monetary grants to organizations, groups, projects, and scholarships which have significant potential to advance the state of the art of Amateur Radio and digital communications in general. While ARISS still needs additional donations to fund the IORS fully, this grant significantly helps the endeavor. ARISS plans to have the IORS ready for launch by the end of the year. AMSAT thanks ARDC for their substantial contribution to this effort. ARISS is a key component of AMSAT’s vision. As printed inside the front cover of each issue of The AMSAT Journal, “Our Vision is to deploy satellite systems with the goal of providing wide-area and continuous coverage,” as we “continue active participation in human space missions and support a stream of LEO satellites developed in cooperation with the educational community and other amateur satellite groups.” AMSAT teams are hard at work on each clause of that vision statement. The GOLF program is making good progress with development of the GOLF-TEE satellite. GOLF-TEE is a crucial element of our path back to high orbits and fulfilling the first clause of AMSAT’s vision to provide wide-area and continuous coverage satellite systems. Systems aboard GOLF-TEE include active attitude determination and control (ADAC), a radiation-tolerant internal housekeeping unit (RT-IHU), and a Fox-1E type VHF/UHF linear transponder. GOLF-TEE also will include a software defined radio (SDR) with a high-speed X band (10 GHz) data downlink which may also provide a simultaneous X band downlink of the V/u transponder passband, effectively providing V/x capability for use and evaluation. All of these technologies are crucial for missions to HEO and GEO, and additional information will appear in future issues of The AMSAT Journal. Our participation in human space missions also is expanding. As announced at the AMSAT Forum at the Dayton Hamvention, international AMSAT and ARISS organizations have formed a group known as AREx (Amateur Radio Exploration). Work currently is underway on the design of a ham radio system for NASA’s Lunar Gateway. The Gateway will be a small spaceship in orbit around the Moon that will provide access to more of the lunar surface than ever before, with living quarters for astronauts, a lab for science and research, ports for visiting spacecraft, and more. The first sections of the Gateway are scheduled for launch in 2022. The plans call for various uses of L (1.2 GHz), S (2.4 GHz), C (5 GHz), and X (10 GHz) bands for repeater-type communications, both analog and digital, through Gateway, image transmissions from both inside and outside the Gateway, possible access to experiments aboard Gateway, and two-way communications with astronauts while Gateway is crewed. The challenges for amateurs involve the substantial increase in free space path loss compared to satellites in low earth orbit. We are very excited about AMSAT’s participation in this project. More details will be presented at the 2019 AMSAT Space Symposium and articles will certainly follow in future editions of The AMSAT Journal. Finally, we continue to support a stream of LEO satellites. RadFxSat-2 / Fox-1E is ready for launch no earlier than December 1, 2019 on the ELaNa XX mission. That mission will launch on the first commercial flight of Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne air launch to orbit system. Stay tuned to ANS for further updates on the launch date. The linear transponder and telemetry system carried aboard Fox-1E was designed for use in different CubeSats by merely adding an interface adapter for connection to the host bus. Noting the prevalence of CubeSats built and launched by universities and other organizations, AMSAT adopted a goal of “amateur radio in every CubeSat.” Interested CubeSat programs wanting to fly an amateur radio payload may partner with AMSAT to carry one of these modules on their spacecraft. By providing amateur radio capability, the CubeSat program gets a worldwide ground station network to receive their telemetry and experiment data while the amateur radio community gets a transponder to use in orbit. The first of these partnerships is with the Husky Satellite Lab at the University of Washington. Their 3U CubeSat, HuskySat-1, is scheduled to launch on the ELaNa XXV mission from Wallops Island, VA, no earlier than November 2. Northrup Grumman’s Cygnus spacecraft will carry HuskySat-1 on a mission to the International Space Station. After completing its mission at the ISS, Cygnus will continue to a higher orbit of approximately 500 km to deploy HuskySat-1. After a 30-day mission to complete tests of its experimental payloads, a pulsed plasma thruster, and a K band (24 GHz) communications system, the satellite will be turned over to AMSAT, and the linear transponder will be made available to the amateur radio community. In addition, AMSAT Vice President of Engineering, Jerry Buxton, N0JY, and Vice President of Operations, Drew Glasbrenner, KO4MA, have been hard at work identifying and working with several CubeSat groups interested in carrying this system. We hope to be able to make additional announcements soon. The 2019 AMSAT Board of Directors election recently concluded. I congratulate the winners and look forward to working with the newly- elected board to further our vital mission to Keep Amateur Radio in Space. By the time this Journal arrives, the 2019 Board of Directors meeting and 50th Anniversary AMSAT Space Symposium will have concluded. It promises to be an exciting weekend exploring both AMSAT’s five-decade history and the work we are doing for the future. While there will no doubt be many challenges in the future, I am confident in the organization’s ability to overcome them. We will Keep Amateur Radio in Space. To commemorate this golden milestone, AMSAT decided what better way to celebrate 50 years of Keeping Amateur Radio in Space, then to get AMSAT’s W3ZM call sign to operate from all 50 states and the District of Columbia as a leadup to the 2019 AMSAT 50th Anniversary Space Symposium and General Meeting, to be held in Arlington, VA, October 18 – 20, 2019. AMSAT put out a call to its members to get on the air and activate their states, using AMSAT’s W3ZM call sign, as well as to cover those states without an active AMSAT operator. Activations of United States Territories (i.e. Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U. S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands) were also encouraged. Puerto Rico kicked it off on June 20th and was first on the air, and then, one by one, the U.S.A. map started filling in. Members, some without their family’s knowledge, brought satellite gear with them on vacation to help fill in the harder ones. By the start of October, three weeks before Symposium, 47 states and Puerto Rico were in the log. West Virginia came in October 2nd, Maryland and Delaware on October 6th, and finally Washington, D.C., the birthplace of AMSAT, on October 10th. Coincidently, Washington D. C. was activated outside of the apartment building where one of the first meetings to form the organization was held. Among many overall IARU objectives for WRC-19 one directly affects amateur satellite operation: Agenda item 1.7 - spectrum for non-GSO satellites The IARU supports satisfying the spectrum requirements for non.GSO satellites with short duration missions within the existing allocations for the space operation service or the frequency ranges identified in invites ITU.R 3 of Resolution 659 (WRC.15), unless the satellites are amateur satellites as defined in Radio Regulations (RR) Nos. 1.56 and 1.57. The band 144-146 MHz is especially important to amateurs as it is currently the only worldwide primary amateur and amateur-satel- lite allocation between 29.7 MHz and 24 GHz. To answer your questions, I have worked two stations in Guatamala,One did only qsl card, the other,did both card and LOTW. The second question, I only got fj7 before he was stepped on. The third Is, I did work fj/nokv on 04-30-2018, On Fo-29. Costa Rica,Victor,is on almost every day, Does both card and LOTW. NPR just reported that Soviet/Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov has died at the age of 85. He was the first human to perform an EVA in 1965, beating American astronaut Ed White by a few weeks. He was also the commander of the Soviet half of the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. Although it was kept a secret for many years, he had been in training for a moon landing if the N-1 rocket had not failed in 1969. Like several other space travelers, he took up painting in his retirement so that he could convey some of what he saw on his space missions. Leonov and American astronaut David Scott wrote a dual memoir covering the history of the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union, "Two Sides of the Moon: Our Story of the Cold War Space Race". Highly recommend that you get a copy of this book. I met him once in Washington DC at a space conference. Hello all, I just wanted everybody to know, that on ao-91, When it comes up the slot from south, there usually Costa Rica, Panama,Guatamala,And on the 9th there was St Barthelemy island! There is only a few min window for the southern states! It would be nice if those dx locations had chance to work more U.S stations. The pass on the 9th was at 18:02z. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:37 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS from the ISS and ground stations IK1SLD at Settimo Torinese and IQ2MZ at Monza. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. Calvino - Istituto Comprensivo Settimo IV The comprehensive institute Settimo IV consists of a kindergarten, two primary schools and a secondary school. It is one of the four scholastic poles of Settimo Torinese, a small town just outside Turin, which is a metropolitan city in northern Italy. The city of Settimo in the past years was just a suburban city of Turin that simply hosted the working class families of the big city but it has in recent years aspired to become an exceptional cultural center. Thanks also to the activities of the new multimedia library, designed to be an innovative cultural and informative center, a qualified reference point for information, research and documentation in the scientific area, as well as a center at the forefront of experimentation and use of new technologies. The Calvino secondary school is the secondary school of I.C. Settimo IV and welcomes about 200 pupils aged between 11 and 14 years mainly from the area adjacent to the new library with which it actively collaborates with cultural and scientific projects. Best Practices on FM birds

On the most recent pass of AO-92 a few minutes ago (over EM79), I heard some stations replying to calls by saying only "QSL, 73". I would like to respectfully remind folks that that kind of reply isn't very helpful. Who are you replying to? What is your call sign? What grid are you in? Could be that these folks are new to satellites and were a tad nervous. We've all been there. Please, when you are replying to someone calling you, reply with the other station's callsign, your callsign, and your gridsquare. This is the full exchange that completes a QSO. AO-7 Mode A on the AMSAT status page

As I understand, AO-7 will begin doing 24 hour mode switches about now. So I went to the status page on AMSAT.org and see that the Mode A listing is no longer there. Experimenter Day -- When and Why?

An interesting thread just started over on Twitter on When and Why there is an experimenters day. I thought this discussion ought to be on this AMSAT group also. Let me first try to capture some of the initial Twitter tweets: WD9EWK AO-92 L/V @ 1801 UTC Wednesday: Nice pass for central Arizona, TNX @w0dhb& @w5rkn for QSOs. Fewer showing up for weekday L/V out here, day and night. WY7AA I believe that it should be in L Band for 48 hours during the week for a period (say 3 months) and then 24 hours on the weekend for the same. Everyone gets some time with it then, and people can complain when they forget it changed. WD9EWK With AO-51 in the past & its different configurations, it was usually left in something like V(USB)/U(FM), V/S, or L/S for a week at a time. Not just one day at a time. Made it easier to try the different configurations when they were available. WY7AA I don't have an answer based on your choices. I believe that it should be in L Band for 48 hours during the week for a period (say 3 months) and then 24 hours on the weekend for the same. Everyone gets some time with it then, and people can complain when they forget it changed. Lets have a discussion on the AMSAT-BB also. I find changing times not ideal for me but others would prefer different times. Such as weekend vs. Weekday. Perhaps a mailing list which would be sent out as a reminder. Re: [amsat-bb] Counterbalance weight on antenna rotator?

My thinking has been to put it out of balance, especially with the light weight satellite antennas we use. In a perfectly balanced system, the wind will work the gearing back and forth. In an unbalanced system, the gears will stay meshed in one direction not working the internal parts when the antennas are moving or are at rest. It's difficult to balance a system when coax and preamps added to the rear. It's also good to have the least wind resistance when SatPC32 returns antennas to the rest position The Yaesu elevation rotors are pretty tough. I used an Alliance U-110 for years with no problems. Re: Counterbalance weight on antenna rotator? (Bob Hammond) My antennas are mostly "center" mounted because of their length and are pretty well balanced as a result. For antennas rear mounted to the cross boom, a length of tubing extending in the opposite direction from the antennas could be used with an adjustable weight that can be positioned to achieve the correct balance. The idea of a counter balance weight is interesting, but the antennas present a variable load depending upon the elevation. The weight on the cable presents a constant load independent of the elevation. Worse yet, I use a flip mode tracking that resolves the issue of having the satellite path cross the stops of the azimuth rotor and having to rotate the antennas 360 degrees to continue tracking the satellite. But this requires 180 degree movement of the elevation rotor. The weight on a cable would then add to the weight of the antennas which would make the problem worse and make the elevation rotor work twice as hard. Using an opposing counterbalance weight mounted opposite the antennas can essentially change the function of the elevation rotor to being simply a positioning device if the array is properly balanced. I just picked up a new-to-me ICOM IC-910H to explore working amateur satellites. For whatever reason, I'm able to track and hear them fine but don't hear myself or get a response when I transmit. I've tried both PstRotator and SatPC32 with no luck. If somebody familiar with the 910 would walk me through the correct setup via email I'd be grateful. Do a lot of you, or all, use a counterbalance weight on your elevation rotor? If so, how did you implement it? I have 3 antennas (2M, 70cm, 23cm) on my cross boom and want to reduce the load on the Yaesu rotor so it lasts longer. 73s, Bob W7OTJ

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Collège Robert Doisneau, Sarralbe, France on 08 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:29 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and F6KFT. The contact should be audible over France and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in French. Story: As the name suggests, Sarralbe was formed at the confluence of the valleys of the Saar and the Albe, two rivers that go down, the first from the Vosges foothills, the second from the near area of the Moselle ponds. Sarralbe is located between Strasbourg an Metz. Our city, main canton town, is a member of the "Albe and Lakes" Local Council Community. The city territory covers a total area of 27 square kilometers and it is between 206 and 262 meters high. Its inhabitants are called the Sarralbenois and Sarralbenoises. At the last census, there were 4645 inhabitants in Sarralbe. In College Robert Doisenau, our middle school, we are 500 pupils and we are 9h graders. In the last two years, we have launched two weather balloons, with 3 cameras, in the atmosphere that have climbed up to 30 km altitude to get as close as possible to the ISS station! At the same time, with amateur radio club F6KFT, we often practice using Morse language. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. I'm not having luck with decoding Athenoxat-1. I get clean, strong signals, use the UZ7HO soundmodem with the GOMX-1 4800bd settings. Audio is getting in, but no decoding whatsoever. The PY4ZBZ web page has good information, but I'm still not succeeding. Before I waste any more time: can Athenoxat-1 signals still be decoded or did they change protocol?
