ARISS News Release No.22-18 DaveJordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISSContact is Scheduled with Students at Space Hardware Club, Huntsville, Alabama, USA April4, 2022—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has receivedschedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between astronauts aboard theInternational Space Station (ISS) and U.S. students at the Space Hardware Club inHuntsville, Alabama. ARISS conducts 60-80 of these special amateur radiocontacts each year between students around the globe and crew members with hamradio licenses aboard the ISS. Space Hardware Club (SHC) is a student organization at theUniversity of Alabama (UAH) in Huntsville. Within SHC, students at UAH get thechance to gain hands-on experience with designing, building, and flyingnumerous types of aerospace payloads. The club’s Outreach Program activitiesincludes high- altitude ballooning, payload design, low powered ESTES rockets,and the launching of high-altitude model rockets. SHC will host this ARISScontact for the following rural/suburban public schools: Buckhorn MiddleSchool, Mountain Gap Middle School, New Hope Elementary School, and SparkmanMiddle School. SHC Outreach members have been helping about 800 students fromthese schools to learn more about rocketry, high-altitude ballooning, amateurradio technology, and the research being conducted on the ISS. Leading up tothe ARISS radio contact, SHC outreach members helped the students with hands-onamateur radio activities such as circuit building and antenna construction. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions ofAstronaut Thomas Marshburn, amateur radio call sign KE5HOC. Local Covid-19protocols are adhered to as applicable for each ARISS contact. The downlinkfrequency for this contact is 145.800 MHZ and may be heard by listeners thatare within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relay ground station. ARISS conducts 60-80 of these special amateur radiocontacts each year between students around the globe and crew members with hamradio licenses aboard the ISS. Leonardo-Da-Vinci Campus (Campus) offers students STEM coursesin mathematics, computer science, and physics as well as astronomy classes. Studentsat the Campus that will be participating in this ARISS contact are in highschool, ages 14-17 years. Forty students have been directly involved in questionselection and in workshops, and 100 students have attended space-related science(ISS as a topic) lectures and other events. The Campus has partnered with the DLRSchool Lab of the German Aerospace Center in Neustrelitz (DLR School Lab) wherestudents will be participating in the radio contact. Local amateur radiooperators in the DLR School Lab are providing technical support in the way ofworkshops, and lectures and the radio equipment for this ARISS radio contact. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio that will allow students to ask their questions ofAstronaut Matthias Maurer, amateur radio call sign KI5KFH. Local Covid-19protocols are adhered to as applicable for each ARISS contact. The downlinkfrequency for this contact is 145.800 MHZ and may be heard by listeners thatare within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relay ground station. Amateur radio operators in Neustrelitz, Germanywill use call sign DC1RSN to serve as the amateur radio ground station. ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between January 1, 2023, and June 30, 2023. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. The deadline to submit a proposal is March 31, 2022. [ANS thanks Phil Smith, W1EME, AMSAT Dayton Hamvention Team Lead, for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Kerry Banke to be honored with the 2022 Hamvention Special Achievement Award The Hamvention awards committee recently announced that Kerry Banke, N6IZW, has won the 2022 Hamvention Special Achievement Award for his efforts in the design, development, manufacturing, and human spaceflight certification of the ARISS Multi-Voltage Power Supply (MVPS). The MVPS is a foundational element of the ARISS next generation radio system, which is now on-orbit. The Hamvention Special Achievement Award is given each year to a deserving amateur that has made an outstanding contribution advancing the art and/or science. Now retired, Banke spent most of his career in the research and development of electronics systems as a microwave RF (Radio Frequency) electrical engineer. This included 14 years as Qualcomm engineer, developing innovative microwave wireless technologies. Kerry’s electronic interests span DC (Direct Current) to light with particular interest and expertise in microwaves. His ham radio operations have included transmissions on 136 kHz through Laser. Since 1982 he has served as host of the San Diego Microwave Group’s monthly meeting, sharing his expertise with other hams of like interest. Mr. Banke’s exceptional support to Human Spaceflight Amateur Radio began in 1994 where he served as a school technical mentor and certified ground station for the Shuttle Amateur Radio EXperiment (SAREX) program. When NASA transitioned from the Shuttle to the International Space Station (ISS), Kerry became an exemplary member of the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) hardware team. For seven years, working from his home and electronics lab garage in La Mesa, California, Mr. Banke led the circuit design, breadboarding, flight circuit board layout, assembly, and testing of the MVPS. The MVPS, which occupies a volume roughly the size of two stacked reams of paper, can connect into different ISS power sources (120 VDC and 28 VDC) and simultaneously power up to 18 devices with multiple voltage level input needs. ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between January 1, 2023, and June 30, 2023. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. The deadline to submit a proposal is March 31, 2022.
