Hamfest Observations Funny

I have been going to Ham Fest for over 50 Yrs and I have made and heard a lot of observations. I have known Hap Holly KC9RP for Over 40 yrs and He is still promoting Ham Radio https://www.arnewsline.org/hap-holly He did this Interview with a Ham about Ham Fest I Laughed so hard when I listened to it while I was playing after a Tech-Net. Clint, All, There were several large wooden slide rules made by Pickett and other manufacturers as teaching props. My son has one that is a straight forward two scale Log-Log that his school gave him. He used to use a slide rule in science and math classes when his classmates all were using programmable calculators. He usually had answers before anyone else did. Sadly, they are just an interesting collector piece for hobby room walls now. ARISS conducts 60-80 of these specialamateur radio contacts each year between students around the globe and crewmembers with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. The Forum Accademico Italiano e.V. (Cologne), is an associationcreated to encourage interaction among Italian scientists based in Germany withthose scientists within the local Italian community, with special attention toItalian children attending German schools. The Forum Accademico Italiano organizedthis ARISS contact event (Project) with the aim of building a bridge between youngstudents and scientists with a common interest in science, space and humanspaceflight. The Project is strongly interdisciplinary and directed to developdifferent skills: language, communication and critical thinking. The languagesused in the Project are Italian, German and English. Schools participating inthis event include three schools in Germany: Am Zugweg School in Cologne,Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium in Cologne, HerkunftSpracheUnterricht in Bedburg/Elsdorf,and the Istituto San Giuseppe in Firenze, Italy. Participating students rangein ages 10 -16 years and have engaged in various STEM subjects to understandthe role of space exploration in society and what it means to be an astronaut. WispDDE question

To make sure I understand all of this correctly, if I am running Orbitron software, and have WispDDE loaded, and my radio interfaced to the computer for CAT control, I can tune the radio to anywhere in the satellite passband on receive, and the WispDDE software will automatically tune my transmit to the correct uplink frequency to account for doppler shift, correct? 73 John AF5CC

Hello all, After a period of inactivity, I am getting back on the birds. I have 2 of the Orbit-360 rotator that have 0-5 volt pots for positioning feedback. These should be a good fit to use with the K3NG system. I am a complete noob to Arduino and computer control, but I do have my transceivers working with Gpredict. Now to do the same with the rotator. Slide Rules

During my satellite presentations, I will ask attendees to access their slide rules as we together derive satellite pass data manually, to graph each pass on equatorial graph paper … “What - no one has a slide rule?” I will playfully chide them. “Didn’t the club president tell you all to have him for the presentation?” Well, the Puget Sound Repeater Group just floored me: EIGHT SLIDE RULES were in the audience (three from one person, including a circular one and I recognized another as a Pickett Vector Model 300 - in its original leather case)! A wonderful club. Sixty-two total years of supporting their region. Multiple daily nets that are well-attended (I know - I monitored ‘em via Echolink for a couple days). Hello, I am looking forward to catching up with AMSAT when I go out to Hamvention next week. It is great getting back to in-person events. I am driving from the Boston area using just the power of the electron! Unfortunately I could not drive to Hamvention in 1960 (I could not reach the pedals and no FSD yet) so I missed getting my own copy of this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOqe0oouN2s I did attend Hamvention at the Hara Arena a number of times in later years when I could drive and even helped with setup in the Ball Arena a few times. (Telephone (937) 878-9022) AMSAT/TAPR Banquet will honor the life of Bob Bruninga, WB4APR The 13th annual AMSAT/TAPR Banquet will be held at the Kohler Presidential Banquet Center on Friday, May 20th at 18:30 EDT. This dinner is always a highlight of the AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corp.) and TAPR (Tucson Amateur Packet Radio) activities during the Dayton Hamvention. This year's banquet will honor the life and accomplishments of long time amateur satellite and amateur packet pioneer Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, who passed away in February. The Kohler Presidential Banquet Center is located at 4548 Presidential Way, Kettering, Ohio. That is about 20 minutes away from the Greene County Fairgrounds. Tickets ($57 each) purchase deadline was Friday, May 13th. Banquet tickets had to be purchased in advance and will not be sold at the AMSAT booth. A real-time GNU Radio decoder has been used to receive and store telemetry almost every day over the course of 10 months. Some of the telemetry variables, such as the trajectory information, have been successfully interpreted and used to track the progress of the mission. In recent years he'd turned to philanthropy, giving $30M to the University of California San Diego (UCSD) for a building named after him. The dedication was just two days ago, and he didn't show up. He'd also donated $3M to the Allen Telescope Array for a new broadband antenna feed, but more importantly he had provided them with a lot of engineering management and guidance that will be impossible to replace. AMSAT members probably know him best as the author of the Instant Track orbital tracking software that AMSAT sold for many years." Bob McGwier, N4HY writes: Franklin and Mike Valentine donated money to AMSAT GEO P4B development that got us all the way to yes from the USAF and NASA. He was always after me to do more for SETI Institute and the Allen Telescope Array. He was instrumental in support of first four Microsats. When we got the flight computers, they arrived "some assembly required". He ordered the Qualcomm microelectronics lab to help fix the assembly issues with the first ever 8 layer boards flown to orbit. When we had things to discuss, we would ride around in his big white Cadillac convertible. The back seat was loaded with empty soda cans. He was infamous at Qualcomm for occasionally dumping many of the cans near his parking spot. The grounds crew was prepared and cleaned them up quickly. Whenever I visited in the newer building that contained his office, he encouraged me to ride his Segway around the floor, where all the C suite offices were located. Not all the dead stuff in space is junk; some are true gems. Believe it or not, according to the Index of Objects Launched into Outer Space maintained by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, there were 7,389 individual satellites orbiting our little planet at the end of April 2021 (others place the number closer to 6,500). This number is only set to increase over time, with some estimates coming in at around 990 satellites being added to the mix every single year. When Rebba was nine, he received his ham radio technician license - becoming the youngest person of Indian origin, until then, to receive the same. That earned him a spot in the Limca Book of Records. The same year, he attained the General Class License. Now a senior specializing in Computer Science at Normal Community High School in Bloomington, Rebba firmly believes that getting into amateur radio was a stepping stone to various other fields. China successfully launched Tianzhou-4 on a Long March 7 to resupply the Tiangong space station (which is increasingly being referred to as the CSS) ahead of the crewed Shenzhou-14 next month (NET June 5). Tianzhou automated resupply spacecraft are built on a core module design derived from the Tiangong station itself. At 4.2 m in diameter and 18 m long, they can deliver up to 6.8 tons of cargo to the station and are also used to refuel the station’s electric propulsion system. Shenzhou-14’s crew will prepare the station for its second and third modules: Wentian and Mengtian. These modules are on-orbit labs hosting Chinese and international experiments—over 1,000(!) have already been approved. Last night I got the sad news that Franklin Antonio, N6NKF, one of the founders of Qualcomm and my boss for most of my 20 years there, has passed away. In recent years he'd turned to philanthropy, giving $30M to the University of California San Diego (UCSD) for a building named after him. The dedication was just two days ago, and he didn't show up. He'd also donated $3M to the Allen Telescope Array for a new broadband antenna feed, but more importantly he had provided them with a lot of engineering management and guidance that will be impossible to replace. AMSAT members probably know him best as the author of the Instant Track orbital tracking software that AMSAT sold for many years. Phil

ARISS News Release No.22-29 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE 9 US Schools Moved Forward in ARISSSelection Process May13, 2022: Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is pleasedto announce the schools/host organizations selected for the January-June 2023 window.A total of 9 of the submitted proposals during the recent proposal window havebeen accepted to move forward in the processes of planning to host a scheduledamateur radio contact with crew on the ISS. The primary goal of the ARISSprogram is to engage young people in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts andMath (STEAM) activities and raise their awareness of space communications,radio communications, space exploration, and related areas of study and careerpossibilities. TheARISS program anticipates that NASA will be able to provide schedulingopportunities for the 9 US host organizations during the January-June 2023 timeperiod. They are now at work completing an acceptable equipment plan thatdemonstrates their ability to execute the ham radio contact. Once theirequipment plan is approved by the ARISS Technical Mentors, the final selectedschools/organizations will be scheduled as their availability and flexibilitymatch up with the scheduling opportunities offered by NASA. Leopardi,Macherio, Monza e Brianza, Lombardia, Italy May10, 2022—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has receivedschedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between astronauts aboard theInternational Space Station (ISS) and students at the Secondary School of IGrade G. Leopardi, in Macherio, Monza and Brianza provence, Lombardy region,Italy. ARISS conducts 60-80 of thesespecial amateur radio contacts each year between students around the globe andcrew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. The G. Leopardi secondary school is part of the ComprehensiveInstitute, called "G. Rodari ", which was established in the2000/2001 school year and takes its name from the Primary school located in theBareggia hamlet. Throughout the past year, the school involved about 240 middleand elementary grade students (ages 10-14 years) in preparation for this ARISS contact.Students were engaged in various STEM courses designed to enhance their knowledgeof space exploration, technologies and satellite communications. Studentslearned about various aspects of space exploration in a wide range of coursesin the fields of; literature, history, physical education, music, and culturalstudies. The school also organized various lectures, seminars and conferences forthe students and the public on topics presented by experts in the fields of:astrophysics, archaeology, space medicine, electrical engineering,environmental science, music, literature, and amateur radio. Members of the Association of Amateur RadioItaly (ARI Erba) will be supporting the radio contact. This will be a telebridge Contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask theirquestions of Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, amateur radio call sign IZØUDF.Local Covid-19 protocols are adhered to as applicable for each ARISS contact.The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHZ and may be heard bylisteners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses thetelebridge station. The ARISS amateur radio ground station(telebridge station) for this contact is in Greenbelt, Maryland, U.S. Theamateur radio volunteer team at the ground station will use the callsign K6DUE,to establish and maintain the ISS connection.
