In the last two decades, over 1,400 contacts have connected more than one million youth using amateur radio, with millions more watching and learning. ARISS is constantly pursuing educational opportunities that inspire student interest and outcomes. ARISS-USA is pleased to announce that the ARRL Foundation awarded funding for the first year of a two-year project called the “ARISS *STAR* Keith Pugh Memoriam Project” with *STAR* being the acronym for Space Telerobotics using Amateur Radio. The ARRL Foundation very generously provided $47,533. The project honors the memory of highly-respected Keith Pugh, whose call sign was W5IU (Silent Key, May 2019). He was an expert supporter of ARISS for many years, a star ARISS Technical Mentor assisting schools with their ARISS contacts, finding educators who might be interested in learning about ARISS, and going to schools to lead youth in a variety of lessons about wireless radio technology. ARISS *STAR* (short for ARISS *STAR* Keith Pugh Memoriam Project), is a brand-new education program that will enable US junior high and high school education groups to remotely control robots through digital APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) commands using amateur radio. Year 1 focuses on systems development and initial validation of *ARISS* STAR, and Year 2 focuses on evaluation and final validation. Systems development and evaluation will be led by university staff and students who will undertake hands-on-wireless and telerobotics lesson development, learn about Amateur Radio, and support the development of the *STAR* engineering hardware and software. Next, youth teams will be selected to experiment and critique *STAR* telerobotics scenarios along closed courses and radio lessons. Some participating students will want to prepare for, and earn, their amateur radio licenses, using ham radio to learn and practice concepts in radio technology and radio communications. Overarching goals for *STAR* are to improve and sustain ARISS STEAM educational outcomes with youth. Robotics is gaining popularity among youth and adults alike. Telerobotics adds a wireless accent to robotic control. *STAR*, therefore, gives ARISS a new educational dimension to attract the attention of more education groups and their students and educators—outreach that promises to attract new audiences. The ARRL Foundation was established in 1973 by ARRL, The National Association for Amateur Radio ®, and advances the art, science and societal benefits of the Amateur Radio Service by awarding financial grants and scholarships to individuals and organizations in support of their charitable, educational and scientific efforts. As it has been noted in older posts, both satellites offer voice communications in FM and data retransmission in FSK or AFSK up to 2400 bps, such as AX.25 or APRS frames. They also transmit voice beacons in FM with the callsigns AM5SAT and AM6SAT, as well as CW, and, in the case of Hades, SSTV live images too. We thank you in advance for trying to receive their signals and of course for trying to use the repeater. EASAT-2 one will be automatically active 30 minutes after the launch although it would be a priority for us trying to have some telemetry frames first to check if all is working properly. I tell you a bit more about the satellites: EASAT-2 has been designed and built jointly by AMSAT-EA and students from the European University of Degrees in Aerospace Engineering in Aircraft and in Telecommunication Systems Engineering, with contributions from ICAI in the communications part, and it incorporates as an experimental load a basalt material from Lanzarote, similar to lunar basalts, provided by the CSIC research group on meteorites and planetary geosciences at the Institute of Geosciences, IGEO (CSIC-UCM) and that could be used as a construction material on the Moon. This project was promoted and has the collaboration of the ETSICCP (UPM). The UNESCO world geopark of Lanzarote and the Chinijo archipelago has been used for different investigations as an analogue of the Moon and Mars, also including the training of ESA astronauts. The selected basalt material meets the requirements to be used as a simulant of the existing basalt on the Moon. The purpose of the experiment is to determine its evolution in space based on periodic measurements of some of its properties. Although the experiment is limited and constitutes the first phase of this type of study, it represents an important milestone as it is the first of its kind to be introduced on such a small satellite. As for Hades, its payload consists of a miniature camera module that outputs the captured images as an audio signal in SSTV mode. The SSTV formats it uses are compatible with Robot36, Robot72, MP73 and MP115. The design of the cam module is based on the one used in the successful mission of the PSAT2 satellite, an amateur radio satellite of the United States Naval Academy and the Brno University of Technology. This camera has been operational since June 25, 2019: (http: // www.aprs.org/psat2.html). The camera chip is the Omnivision OV2640, which provides a resolution of up to 2M pixels and compressed JPEG output. The resolution is limited by the internal memory of the CPU (MCU) that controls the camera to 320x240 (typical) or 640x480 maximum. The MCU selected for the control is the STM32F446RET6, which has the smallest possible footprint with connection to a DCMI peripheral, necessary for the connection with the camera. Images can be stored in 2MB serial flash memory. The complete SSTV encoder has managed to be implemented on a 4 layer PCB with dimensions of only 38x38mm. The MCU can be fully controlled from ground stations. The firmware allows the sending of live camera images, images previously saved in flash memory, or images encoded in ROM. It also provides PSK telemetry and imaging advance scheduling with current status (event counters, temperature, voltage, light conditions, etc.) and a brief summary. The described module has been developed and manufactured in the Department of Radioelectronics of the Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic. Both hardware and firmware designs with the source codes will be available on Github under the MIT license (https://github.com/alpov/SatCam). As noted, initially only the EASAT-2 repeater is active. Hades one will be activated by remote control a few days after launch. All: Been using an app called HamSatHD on my ipad for years, but haven’t been active much so hadn’t fire it up in months. Today noticed that I get an error trying to download nasabare.txt: “Connection failed, resource could not be loaded because the app transport security policy requires a secure connection” The app is no longer available in the App Store, so may just have to move on to something new, but wondered if anyone knew why this error was being thrown… something on the AMSAT side or ? It plans to land on the surface of the moon, and to transmit a beacon in the amateur 70cm band. OMOTENASHI is one of the EM-1 CubeSat missions which will be launched by the NASA/SLS rocket (EM-1) together with the main mission of ORION experimental module on Monday. JAXA Ham Radio Club is going to utilize the flight demonstration opportunity of the OMOTENASHI mission to conduct the following amateur radio missions: (i) To conduct technological research with respect to receiving ultra-weak UHF signal from a space probe toward the moon (ii) To conduct an outreach activity providing amateur radio operators all over the world with an opportunity to try to receive signals from moon region. OMOTENASHI is a 6U-CubeSat with external dimensions of 239 x 366 x 113mm and an approximate mass of 14 kg. OMOTENASHI consists of three modules: orbiting module, retro motor module, and surface probe. During the moon transfer orbit, these modules are integrated. When OMOTENASHI arrives at the moon, the surface probe will be separated and conduct semi-hard landing. OMOTENASHI is actively controlled by ultra-small attitude control system including star tracker, sun sensor, IMU, reaction wheel, and cold gas jet thruster. During the moon transfer orbit, OMOTENASHI may be spin-stabilized due to the strict resources. The expected orbit altitude is 300 km with an inclination of 137 degrees. As many of you know, this will be the second attempt of Firefly to reach orbit after the first attempt made in September 2021 and which had to be aborted after two minutes of flight, causing our previous GENESIS-N and GENESIS-L to be lost, among others. These new GENESIS have a more powerful on-board computer than their predecessors and updated software that allows FM voice repeater functionality, AFSK/FSK non-regenerative repeater up to 2400 bps, FSK regenerative repeater up to 50 bps, CW, digitized voice pre-recorded FM and FSK telemetry at 50 bps. The correct retransmission of AX25 / APRS frames over FM up to 2400 bps has been verified in the laboratory. A small drawback we still have is the antenna deployment mechanism, that is the first version that was made and requires a plenty charged battery. The satellites have been stored for several months, so it is a weak point. Hopefully it will work. These satellites also have the names of ASTROLAND-1 and ASTROLAND-2 to say thanks to the sponsorship of the project by the Astroland Planetary Agency. We also thank the private companies and Universities that helped in the project. As on the previous occasion, two experimental propellants are flown, although this time they are from the Madrid company IENAI Space and, unlike the previous GENESIS mission, they use a liquid ionic fuel. Only the one from GENESIS-J is functional. The one from GENESIS-G carries the electronics but without the fuel. "On" times for AO-27 continue to shift along the direction of the orbit. The 5 min "on time" for ascending passes at mid-latitudes is now on DESCENDING passes. Based on current SATNOGS observations, from when the satellite is at about 75 degN to about 65 deg N. The descending node telemetry and repeater operation is probably only available to stations further and further south (a few lucky far-S America and maybe VK and ZL stations may soon be able work Antarctica if anyone is on!). Northern Europe and the UK are now well in the footprint, NE Canadian provinces and some New England stations may be able to work Europe, and KL7 may be able to work northern Japan in a few weeks! These opportunities won't last - the "on" time will continue to shift, and once the onboard clock is reset, the satellite will be back on a "normal" schedule. If you hear or work AO-27, the command stations would appreciate knowing precise times for when the transmitter came on or turned off, and the reporting station's 6-character grid square or lat/lon. If you are in the far South and hear the 20 seconds of telemetry, try to capture KISS frames (NOT ASCII) and send the captured data file (or a good audio file we can try to decode). If scheduling SATNOGs observations (provides an excellent measure of on and off times), try to schedule descending passes during the "on" times and don't bother with ascending passes for now. Just follow these simple steps: + First, select an appropriate CubeSat form factor based on payload size, power requirements, and deployment mechanism. + Consider power budget (especially for when the spacecraft is “in eclipse” on the dark side of the Earth), acceleration and vibration tolerance (the sound of launch alone can damage the spacecraft), and thermal management (your satellite is effectively sitting in a rather large vacuum thermos). + Use Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) parts with existing flight heritage wherever possible—see satsearch and CubeSatShop. + Pick solar panels, batteries, and an Electrical Power System (EPS) to manage them. + Include one or more antennas and radios to talk to a ground station or ground station network (or broadcast up to GlobalStar or Iridium instead). + If you need to maintain orientation, include an Attitude Determination and Control Systems (ADCS) which will use some combination of Earth, Sun, and star trackers, gyroscopes, GPS receivers, and magnetometers to sense orientation, and rotate the spacecraft using magnetorquers and reaction wheels. Some CubeSats also now use miniature thrusters for attitude control, desaturation, and orbit maintenance. + Deployable components, such as antennas and solar panels, are usually stored under tension and released with electromagnets or redundant burn wires. + Next, select an On-Board Computer (OBC) for Command & Data Handling (C&DH) and the flight software that will run on it, such as the open-source cFS and F´ frameworks from NASA. + Prior to assembly, perform “flatsat” testing with everything wired on a bench. This is also when you should verify communications with the spacecraft via its radios. + Once assembled, put the CubeSat through vibration and thermal vacuum testing to ensure that it will survive the stresses of launch and the space environment. + Finally, obtain the required certifications for earth observation, radio licenses, and an approved deorbit plan. Weekly updates are completely adequate for most amateur satellites. TLE bulletin files are updated Thursday evenings around 2300 UTC, or more frequently if new high interest satellites are launched. Limited-Time Opportunity - DX on AO27!

"On" times for AO-27 continue to shift along the direction of the orbit. The 5 min "on time" for ascending passes at mid-latitudes is now on DESCENDING passes. Based on current SATNOGS observations, from when the satellite is at about 75 degN to about 65 deg N. The descending node telemetry and repeater operation is probably only available to stations further and further south (a few lucky far-S America and maybe VK and ZL stations may soon be able work Antarctica if anyone is on!). Northern Europe and the UK are now well in the footprint, NE Canadian provinces and some New England stations may be able to work Europe, and KL7 may be able to work northern Japan in a few weeks! These opportunities won't last - the "on" time will continue to shift, and once the onboard clock is reset, the satellite will be back on a "normal" schedule. If you hear or work AO-27, the command stations would appreciate knowing precise times for when the transmitter came on or turned off, and the reporting station's 6-character grid square or lat/lon. If you are in the far South and hear the 20 seconds of telemetry, try to capture KISS frames (NOT ASCII) and send the captured data file (or a good audio file we can try to decode). If scheduling SATNOGs observations (provides an excellent measure of on and off times), try to schedule descending passes during the "on" times and don't bother with ascending passes for now. Launch of GENESIS-G and GENESIS-J with Firefly on September 11

Hello everyone, This is to confirm that the launch of our new GENESIS-G and GENESIS-J satellites with Firefly will take place, if all goes well, on September 11, with the launch window starting at 3 PM Pacific Time (22h GMT), from Vanderberg. The expected orbit altitude is 300 km with an inclination of 137 degrees. As many of you know, this will be the second attempt of Firefly to reach orbit after the first attempt made in September 2021 and which had to be aborted after two minutes of flight, causing our previous GENESIS-N and GENESIS-L to be lost, among others. These new GENESIS have a more powerful on-board computer than their predecessors and updated software that allows FM voice repeater functionality, AFSK/FSK non-regenerative repeater up to 2400 bps, FSK regenerative repeater up to 50 bps, CW, digitized voice pre-recorded FM and FSK telemetry at 50 bps. The correct retransmission of AX25 / APRS frames over FM up to 2400 bps has been verified in the laboratory. A small drawback we still have is the antenna deployment mechanism, that is the first version that was made and requires a plenty charged battery. The satellites have been stored for several months, so it is a weak point. Hopefully it will work. These satellites also have the names of ASTROLAND-1 and ASTROLAND-2 to say thanks to the sponsorship of the project by the Astroland Planetary Agency. We also thank the private companies and Universities that helped in the project. As on the previous occasion, two experimental propellants are flown, although this time they are from the Madrid company IENAI Space and, unlike the previous GENESIS mission, they use a liquid ionic fuel. Only the one from GENESIS-J is functional. The one from GENESIS-G carries the electronics but without the fuel. ARISS News Release No.22-48 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISSContact is Scheduled with Students at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital (at VanderbiltUniversity Medical Center) and Seacrest Studios, Nashville, Tennessee, USA August22, 2022—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has receivedschedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between astronauts aboard theInternational Space Station (ISS) and students (patients) at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’sHospital located in Nashville, TN. ARISSconducts 60-80 of these special amateur radio contacts each year betweenstudents around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard theISS. Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital’s School Program and Seacrest Studios strive to provide anatmosphere of normalization for children that are undergoing treatment by workingwith the patient’s local school (for students in kindergarten through 12thgrade) to provide support for their academic needs. These young patients mightbe hospitalized for several weeks due to an acute medical need or routinelycome to the hospital for short, intermittent stays for specific treatment. Seacrest Studios (located inside the hospital)is a closed-circuit, multi-media broadcast center envisioned and built by theRyan Seacrest Foundation, an organization dedicated to enhancing the hospitalexperience for these children while inspiring them through entertainment andeducation-focused initiatives. The Studios provide programming (includingSTEM-based programs) that instructs, inspires, and engages patients. In preparation for this ARISS contact, thehospital created a unit of study focused on space exploration and HAM radiotechnology that provided a progression of activities throughout the year. Members of the Vanderbilt University AmateurRadio Club (VUARC) and the Williamson County Amateur Radio Group have partneredwith the hospital by providing students with hands-on lessons in ham radio/ radiotechnology and amateur radio station operation during this ARISS radio contact. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio and students will take turns asking their questionsof Astronaut Kjell Lindgren, amateur radio call sign KO5MOS. Local Covid-19protocols are adhered to as applicable for each ARISS contact. The downlinkfrequency for this contact is 145.800 MHZ and may be heard by listeners thatare within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relay ground station. The amateur radio ground station for this contactis in Nashville, TN. Amateur radio operators using call sign N4FR, will operatethe ground station to establish and maintain the ISS connection. All: I haven't been to Hamvention in years. Was thinking about going, but not at $350 per night for a hotel near Xenia. I just got reminded that AMSAT used to set up a block of rooms, at a reasonable price in Dayton. Now that Hamvention has moved, is AMSAT still doing that? If so, where can I get info? AMSAT Keplerian data

Several of us that talk on the linear birds in the morning have noticed that SatPC32's Satellites, Update Keps, selected keps file, routine returns either a 'No Keplerian data found!' or a 'Download failed' error. I had to manually copy and paste the kep data from the AMSAT site to get a fresh set. I tried this on two different PC's here. As I haven't updated any of my s/w on this end I'm assuming this is an issue on the AMSAT kep site. Anyone know what's going on here ? 73 Jeff kb2m

Never thought I would be writing anything like this ... but here we go. Imagine a well-built, capable, 128-channel dual-band HT. Analog, FM-only. Decent scan speed. Ships with the following accessories ... -Two 2200mAH Li-Ion batteries -Drop-in cradle charger (AC AND car cords included) -Traditional 7" antenna -16" improved antenna -A beefy speaker-mic, with great strain-reliefs on cord, rotating clip -A "two-wire" earpiece/inline-mic (light-duty quality) -Programming cable for Windows -CHIRP already has supported it - for Mac and Windows $52 for it all. (NOT a duplex/satellite HT.) But it sure is a "cut above" the more-difficult-to-get-to-know $25-45 HT ONLY units out there. This package would be much more enjoyable for someone entering the hobby than MANY others - with limited or non-existent support, and programming difficulties. I got involved with TIDRadio as I have been testing their Bluetooth BL-1 dongle. (Tentative opinion: It works, it is sometimes clumsy, it is better when you use it in conjunction with their Web site, but TIDRadio is listening to hams, and are updating and improving.) As always, I have absolutely no financial interest in this. I mention it because we all have seen much frustration with many other models of HTs when it comes to programming. When Gordon West and I started pre-programming HTs for new hams while I was working at HRO-Anaheim in 2004, the goal was to get folks on the air ASAP. Learn the radio a little later - but get on the air with your new license NOW! This package from TIDRadio is much more "attractive" than MANY other offerings I have seen and experienced. The satellite is expected to re-enter in 6-9 months, so now is the time to use it!
