Hi! I'm trying to activate T47C from FL11 on the next ISS pass on the FM repeater (~1930z) Fully portable, will have a Wuoxung UV-8E for RX with the stock whip and a 2m base station with 20W on a 2m mag mount on the roof of a car. See T47C in QRZ for details, QSL via manager.

I have a Raspberry Pi Igate that works fine on 144.39 and uploads to APRS.fi. I switched it over to 145.825 for the ISS. The issue I have is on APRS.fi it doesn't show the packets I have received from the ISS. The other website Amateur Radio Stations heard via ISS (pa3guo.com) I sent an email to the contact email with no response. Does anyone have an idea how I can get my Igate to show the packets? PCsat32 ISS cross-band repeater & other questions

Just learning and configuring PCsat32, don't know why it took me so long to decide to computer control the rig. Does the ISS cross-band repeater need a tone entry in Subtone.sql? The file that came with the install didn't have that entry in it. Also I need a more info on a couple items in the CAT menu. What is the speed box setting for? Also what is the Freq Calibr setting calibrating? Downlink? May have more questions but things are fairly straight forward from the help manual. KB7ADL

Do not expect Yuri to fill in missing grid squares. As Captain, Yuri has mailing amenities. His company's agent is responsible for mailing out anything that he gives them to mail. Not all ports have good mail service and not all agents are reliable. The past two years have been difficult at times becausesome agents would refuse to take mail for fear of touching an envelope and contracting Covid. Many confirmations went by the wayside. problem solved

So with a bunch of emails today about my issues with the 9100 and SATpc32, I was finally able to get on CAS4 this afternoon and make 2 good contacts. Thanks to all that replied as I learned a bit more to help me in the future. The real answer was something that Ray KN2K mentioned about the doppler.sqf file in that the entries for them may show NOR and If so should change that to REV. Once I made corrections for that error it started to work like everyone said it should. Later on I checked for other entries accuracy but found many files online still to have the errors in them. One day will have to understand more about the file and why the errors are there. I know when I first started out to get involved I was surprised to find that there was no place that had the correct files for the doppler and tone files for the current real active sats. Just completed a fun presentation to the Canadian West Carleton ARC. And they surprised me. SOMEone had seen my presentation elsewhere, and knew I cited the use of slide rules for performing computations. SO when I mentioned if anyone had their slide rules at hand - and expecting no response - FOUR slide rules were shown, including what appeared to be a Concise Stadia 100850! Hosting our payload on a commercial GEO satellite would likely cost more than $10 million if the commercial satellite owner is to be fully compensated for the engineering modifications to their satellite and potential loss of transponder revenue from diverting satellite resources to a non-productive payload over a 15 year design lifetime. Offering a tax break will probably not make up this difference. You might have better luck seeking hosting on a government owned satellite such as the Air Force mission that was discussed by AMSAT a few years ago, but eventually fell through. This is where carefully cultivated personal relationships can come in, if you have any such friends in high places. OSCAR-1 got its launch approved back in 1961 because of a few highly placed hams in the Pentagon, so keep up with your networking and maybe it can happen. Some orbits are inherently unstable, for example 63 degree Molniya orbits will reliably decay in a few years. The Late, Great OSCAR-13 provides a prime example of this. Their orbital lifetime is heavily sensitive to the time of launch, if AO-13 was launched a few hours earlier it would still be up there, a few hours later it would have reentered a couple of years after launch. This is easy to model in GMAT. As a secondary payload, we don't get to choose the launch time, our only hope would be to use thrusters to make slight post-launch adjustments so the satellite reenters not too early (as AO-13 did) and not too late. I have been trying to figure out how to do this but have not had any results so far. If we have a dedicated launch all to ourselves we can choose a launch time that meets our requirements. The NASA Cubesat that was recently grounded was aiming for a GTO launch, which has been mentioned as a possible target for an AMSAT mission because we could possibly get one cheap. Analysis of NORAD tracking data shows a lot of spent rocket bodies that have been in GTO for decades, so this might not be the best choice for a mission that needs a guaranteed reentry date. Another possibility would be to place the satellite directly into the GEO graveyard orbit and let it slowly drift around the Earth. There are plenty of other HEO or Cislunar orbits that are not sensitive to orbital debris requirements and may not be commercially attractive but would work OK for our needs. progressing but still need help

It has been an exhausting couple of weeks but I have done everything that has been suggested and even tried some new stuff that I read about. I still cannot get the CAT part of SATpc32 to work correctly, thus no real contacts. Yes I can hear myself eventually and get it into the sqf file but I am missing something to make it track so it seems. Some times I am close and can hear my voice but the auto kicks in and I cannot find it again. Had a few times where someone answers my test calls and we are able chat but way off freq. When adjusting the offset in the CAT menu what kind of numbers may be seen or average. At this point I have given up for a while, /thinking I am too old for this stuff now,/ and now looking for hands on help in one of the local clubs in Ontario Canada. Steve that is about what I expected. I had always hoped it could happen again. I guess all the AO-40 equipment - amps, pre-amps, antennas, rotators, rigs, switches, and a-lot of stuff I don't even remember will remain in sealed boxes - a-lot brand new and even more used only a few hours will remain there until my estate sale... back to my old 40 M dipole like Ed said. The 112-foot-tall (34 meters) Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) lifted off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre on India's southeastern coast on Saturday at 11:48 p.m. EDT (0348 GMT and 9:18 a.m. India Standard Time on Sunday, Aug. 7) with two satellites onboard. The main payload on Saturday's test mission was EOS-02, a 300-pound (135 kilograms) experimental Earth-observation satellite. The second satellite was an 18-pound (8 kg) cubesat called AzaadiSAT. This little spacecraft was loaded with 75 different payloads, which were built by female students across India to perform a variety of "femto-experiments." "The payloads include a UHF-VHF transponder working in ham radio frequency to enable voice and data transmission for amateur radio operators, a solid state PIN diode-based radiation counter to measure the ionizing radiation in its orbit, a long-range transponder and a selfie camera," ISRO officials wrote in the mission description. Instead of placing the satellites in a circular orbit 221 miles (356 kilometers) above Earth, the rocket left them in an orbit that ranged from 221 miles to as close as 47 miles (76 km). That orbit was not stable, and the satellites have "already come down, and they are not usable," ISRO Chairman S. Somanath said in a video statement after the launch. [ANS thanks Space.com for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Russia Successfully Launches KAI 1 Repeater Along With Iranian Satellite A Russian rocket on Tuesday successfully launched an Iranian satellite into orbit, along with a Russian amateur cubesat. The Soyuz rocket lifted off as scheduled at 05:52 GMT Tuesday, Aug. 9 from the Russia-leased Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan. About nine minutes after the launch, it placed the Iranian satellite called Khayyam into orbit. It’s named after Omar Khayyam, a Persian scientist who lived in the 11th and 12th centuries. Also aboard were 16 Russian cubesats, including the 3U cubesat KAI 1, aka KNITU-KAI, NILAKT DOSAAF LLC, ANO DPO "KIRO." Its callsign will be RS26S. It carries a 145/435 MHz repeater, panoramic cameras and a temperature meter based on a fiber Bragg grating. Currently no further details are available. Among the other cubesats scheduled for this launch were ten Russian satellites in the SXC3 series, transmitting telemetry on amateur frequencies. Binar-1 is a 1U CubeSat currently in low-Earth orbit (LEO) and was a technical demonstrator of in-house developed hardware that aimed to become a repeatable platform for research and educational purposes. This year the Board of the WIA agreed to support the upcoming mission 2 that will see satellites: Binar-2, Binar-3 and Binar-4 be deployed from the ISS in the same way as Binar-1 into LEO. A subsequent mission 3 will follow about a year later with three more CubeSats (Binar-5,6 and 7) to also be delivered into Low Earth Orbit. Part of the Binar mission is to try to make it easier for young, enthusiastic students to learn more about and how to use amateur radio in a way which directly relates to STEM. We believe that this specific use of amateur radio is a fantastic crossover opportunity for education and encouragement of STEM. Previously young students were constrained by resources, and current progtam wants to provide a platform where students - both high-school and university - can learn about amateur radio, spacecraft, their operations, and science experiments flying onboard the spacecraft. The satellites in Launch 2 will be Binar-2, 3, 4 will have a multiband radio, capable of operating in the amateur band. The radio frequencies are allocated in the 70cm Amateur Satellite Radio band and, as required by local and international regulatory bodies (ACMA, ITU, IARU), will be coordinated through the IARU (International Amateur Radio Union) with the support of the Wireless Institute of Australia as the national association for Amateur Radio in Australia . The main purpose of the usage of the amateur-satellite band allocation onboard the Satellites in Launches 2 and 3 is to provide a platform to educate high school and university students on satellite technology. [ANS thanks Southgate ARC for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Simultaneous Operations of APRS and Voice Repeater Now a Reality on ISS ARISS is pleased to announce that starting yesterday, August 11, simultaneous operations of the ARISS Voice Repeater and digital APRS communications on the International Space Station (ISS) is now a reality. Current ARISS operations include voice repeater transmissions with the JVC Kenwood D710GA in the Columbus module and APRS packet operation from an identical radio in the Service Module (Zvezda). Packet operations are on 145.825 MHz. The ARISS Russia and USA teams have been working for several weeks to prepare the Service Module radio for APRS operations. ARISS Russia team member Sergey Samburov, RV3DR, led the effort, working with Russian mission controllers and the on-board ISS cosmonauts to configure the Service Module radio for APRS ops. On August 11, final checkouts were completed and the APRS packet mode was switched on for amateur radio use. ARISS-International Chair Frank Bauer, KA3HDO states, “Simultaneous operation of APRS and the voice repeater on ISS is transformative for ARISS and represents a key element of our ARISS 2.0 initiative, providing interactive capabilities 24/7 that inspire, engage and educate youth and lifelong learners—especially life-long learning in ham radio operations.” Bauer continues, “Our heartfelt thanks to Sergey Samburov, RV3DR, for making this crucial ARISS 2.0 initiative become a reality.” The Columbus Module radio uses the callsign NA1SS and the new Service Module radio uses RS0ISS. In the Isle of Thanet News, Kathy Bailes, writes: A Broadstairs eight-year-old has chatted with an astronaut aboard the International Space Station and a recording of the conversation will feature on the NASA website. Isabella Payne spoke to Astronaut Kjell Lindgren as the ISS flew overhead last week. The youngster was with dad Matthew Payne, M0LMK, who is a license holding amateur radio enthusiast and tutor. He and Isabella are both members of Hilderstone Radio Society. I see an amateur radio-equipped Geo bird over Central, South and North America as a phenomenal resource for the American Red Cross and others working disasters. It’s not in the traditional “easy sat” category, since it will take about $1000 for a decent ground station. So I cannot anticipate it being “overloaded” by newbies. An alternative would be to launch a cubesat style satellite to GTO and raise the perigee just enough to make the lifetime comply with the debris mitigation rules. After 15 years or so it burns up at perigee. With an orbit from 35,000km down to 800km, a linear transponder could be used with current phone technology (SSB) during the lower part of the orbit. At higher altitudes where the limited link budget, say 4W, is insufficient for the typical SSB + LEO pack, operators could use digital comms (think of another mode being added to WSJT-X) to overcome the path loss. It would inspire some to improve their standard antennas and preamps so they can extend the range of CW/SSB QSOs up a sat altitude of around 10,000km. Hams have patronized their products for long, at times, well past their sell-by-date. The FT817 was kept alive mostly by the sat operators. If each picks up a million dollar ticket, with matching grants, 10 M USD isnt a big deal. It is also big business for them. An 8 MHz slice of space spectrum could otherwise cost them a few times over. - f

Yaesu G-5500/ GS-232B issue

Dear All, I struggled with my rotor for about a month to get it pointing well to LEO’s and finally discovered today that the 4 screws to the AZ/Ele meters in the G-5500 were loose and doing intermittent electrical path, most probably due to temperature change over the 6-8 years I am using it After tightening these and recalibrating all is OK. ARISS News Release No.22-46 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE Simultaneous Operations of APRS and VoiceRepeater now a Reality on ISS ARISS is pleased to announcethat starting yesterday, August 11, simultaneous operations of the ARISS VoiceRepeater and digital APRS communications on the International Space Station(ISS) is now a reality. Current ARISSoperations include voice repeater transmissions with the JVC Kenwood D710GA inthe Columbus module and APRS packet operation from an identical radio in theService Module (Zvezda). Packetoperations are on 145.825 MHz. The ARISS Russia and USAteams have been working for several weeks to prepare the Service Module radiofor APRS operations. ARISS Russia teammember Sergey Samburov, RV3DR, led the effort, working with Russian missioncontrollers and the on-board ISS cosmonauts to configure the Service Moduleradio for APRS ops. On August 11, finalcheckouts were completed and the APRS packet mode was switched on for amateurradio use. ARISS-International ChairFrank Bauer, KA3HDO states, “Simultaneous operation of APRS and the voicerepeater on ISS is transformative for ARISS and represents a key element of ourARISS 2.0 initiative, providing interactive capabilities 24/7 that inspire,engage and educate youth and lifelong learners—especially life-long learning inham radio operations.” Bauer continues,“Our heartfelt thanks to Sergey Samburov, RV3DR, for making this crucial ARISS2.0 initiative become a reality.” The Columbus Module radio uses the callsignNA1SS and the new Service Module radio uses RS0ISS. Aside from the callsigns, the radios areidentical and packet operations are the same as before. You can use RS0ISS, ARISS, or APRSAT as thepacket path. Also, both radios areexpected to be on full time, except during educational contacts, EVAs, and dockingsor undockings.
