Honestly, it would have been much better if they put in a camera there instead of the digipeater. Any projects working on getting into MEO: PLEASE put in a camera (and transmit in a format that is not JPEG)!

In his free time, during theSTS-9 mission, Garriott became the firstever person from space to communicate with amateur radiooperators on the ground. He was also the first to be heard directly from spaceby the public using simple FM receivers and scanners. Dr.Garriott's mission, 40 years ago, transformed astronaut communications fromspace forever, allowing amateur radio operators (hams) and the public tocommunicate with people in space. Prior to this, only a few mission controllersand heads of state could talk to an astronaut in space. Garriott represents thefirst of many spacefarers that employed amateur radio on the Space Shuttle, Mirspace station and the International Space Station for public engagement, familyconnections and educational outreach. To date, well over a million peopleon Earth have participated directly in these astronaut radio contactengagements. The educational youth contacts, coupled with pre-contact educationinitiatives, have inspired, engaged and educated youth around the world andencouraged them to study and pursue careers in Science, Technology,Engineering, and Math (STEM). I noticed that FO-99 is getting quite low in altitude (~300km). I have never caught the transponder on on this bird and was wondering if it is only active over Japan or if it gets turned on other times. I tried looking at the schedule on the Jamsat page but it is really confusing and I don't quite understand it. I think I remember seeing stations outside of Japan working it on the status page but maybe I am remembering wrong. 73,Will, KN6QVA

First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol. Yes, it is a lot of practice, I was using one of these Malahit-type SDRs to listen to the return signal and I was achieving it, I have been a little away due to work and family occupations.
