ARISS News Release No. 23-08 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE Message to US Educators Amateur Radio on theInternational Space Station Contact Opportunity Call for Proposals New Proposal Window is February 20, 2023 – March 31, 2023 February15, 2023 --- The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)Program is seeking formal and informal education institutions andorganizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radiocontact with a crew member on board the ISS. ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between January 1, 2024 and June 30, 2024. Crew scheduling and ISSorbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contactopportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbersof participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. Thedeadline to submit a proposal is March 31st, 2023. Proposalinformation and more details such as expectations, proposal guidelines and theproposal form can be found at www.ariss.org.An ARISS Introductory Webinar session will be held on March 1st, 2023at 8 PM ET. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes inlength and allow students to interact with the astronauts through aquestion-and-answer session. AnARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radiobetween astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms andcommunities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity to learnfirsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and tolearn about space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will have anopportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless technology, andradio science. Because of the nature of human spaceflight and the complexity ofscheduling activities aboard the ISS, organizations must demonstrateflexibility to accommodate changes in dates and times of the radio contact. AmateurRadio organizations around the world with the support of NASA and spaceagencies in Russia, Canada, Japan and Europe present educational organizationswith this opportunity. The ham radio organizations’ volunteer efforts providethe equipment and operational support to enable communication between crew onthe ISS and students around the world using Amateur Radio. (***) https://www.amsat.org/amsat/ariss/news/Successful_ARISS_schools.rtf ####################################################################################################################################### Comments on making general contacts I have been seeing a lot of traffic on Facebook and I suspect on other social media sites with people asking why they are not hearing the crew make general contacts. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol. ARISS News Release No.23-07 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISSContact is Scheduled with Students at Stella Maris College, Gzira, Malta February13, 2023—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has receivedschedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboardthe International Space Station (ISS) and students at the Stella Maris College locatedin Gzira, Malta. ARISS conducts 60-80 ofthese special amateur radio contacts each year between students around theglobe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. Stella Maris College is part of a network (La Salle Malta) ofLasallian Colleges that include De La Salle College and the Mellieha RetreatCentre. La Salle Malta was founded as a single school in 1903 by the Brothersof the Christian Schools and is now the La Salle Malta’s Lasallian Colleges,run by the Malta Trust of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Stella MarisCollege is hosting this ARISS contact for participating students in grades 5through 10 (ages 9-15 years). Stella Maris College has partnered with membersof the Malta Amateur Radio League (MARL) (9H1MRL) who will provide supportduring the ARISS contact. Members of MARL have also made presentations tostudents about amateur radio, and demonstrated satellite tracking and talkingto other hams through amateur radio satellites. As a member of MARL, StellaMaris College has previously operated their own amateur radio station. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol. Hi Sasha, thanks for the reminder, according to Celestrak, the orbit is quickly losing heigth. The sat has lost power more than year ago. Thanks again to Bob Bruninga WB4APR (RIP) who allowed us to build the PSK transponder and to add there the SSTV camera. We had lot of fun during experiments! Both transponder and camera operated flawlessly till the battery deterioration. Hopefully some future satelite builder will be interested in those space tested blocks. 73! First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol. ARISS News Release No.23-06 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISSContact is Scheduled with Students at Gymnasium Christian-Ernestinum, Bayreuth, Germany February12, 2023—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has receivedschedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between astronauts aboard theInternational Space Station (ISS) and students at the GymnasiumChristian-Ernestinum located in Bayreuth, Germany. ARISS conducts 60-80 of these special amateurradio contacts each year between students around the globe and crew memberswith ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. Christian-Ernestinum (GCE) Gymnasium is one of five high schoolsin the city of Bayreuth, and was founded in 1664 by the sovereign Margrave ofBrandenburg, Christian Ernst. GCE teaches Latin and English languages to allstudents, but also offers French, and Spanish. GCE’s STEM program offersstudies in the fields of physics, chemistry and computer science, and maintainsa student exchange program with Italy, France and Greece. They also include electivecourses on research and advances in the natural sciences, astronomy, electronicsand robotics. GCE, as the host to this ARISS contact, recognizes that direct radiocontact with an astronaut in space is a unique and extraordinary experience forstudents. Therefore, GCE has partnered with local radio club: DARC OrtsverbandBayreuth, whose members have provided technical support by setup/operation ofthe amateur radio station as well as technical instruction to students duringworkshops. DARC members also enabled students/teachers to participate in the world-wide,Ham Field Day event, with support for Ham licensing. Students also participatedin a special supporting program that included presentations/workshops onastronomy/physics. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions ofAstronaut Koichi Wakata, amateur radio call sign KI5TMN. The downlink frequencyfor this contact is 145.800 MHZ and may be heard by listeners that are withinthe ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relay ground station. The amateur radio ground station for this contactis at the school in Bayreuth, Germany. Amateur radio operators using call sign DK0BT,will operate the ground station to establish and maintain the ISS connection.
