In the last two decades, over 1,400 contacts have connected more than one million youth using amateur radio, with millions more watching and learning. ARISS is constantly pursuing educational opportunities that inspire student interest and outcomes. ARISS-USA is pleased to announce that the ARRL Foundation awarded funding for the first year of a two-year project called the “ARISS *STAR* Keith Pugh Memoriam Project” with *STAR* being the acronym for Space Telerobotics using Amateur Radio. The ARRL Foundation very generously provided $47,533. The project honors the memory of highly-respected Keith Pugh, whose call sign was W5IU (Silent Key, May 2019). He was an expert supporter of ARISS for many years, a star ARISS Technical Mentor assisting schools with their ARISS contacts, finding educators who might be interested in learning about ARISS, and going to schools to lead youth in a variety of lessons about wireless radio technology. ARISS *STAR* (short for ARISS *STAR* Keith Pugh Memoriam Project), is a brand-new education program that will enable US junior high and high school education groups to remotely control robots through digital APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) commands using amateur radio. Year 1 focuses on systems development and initial validation of *ARISS* STAR, and Year 2 focuses on evaluation and final validation. Systems development and evaluation will be led by university staff and students who will undertake hands-on-wireless and telerobotics lesson development, learn about Amateur Radio, and support the development of the *STAR* engineering hardware and software. Next, youth teams will be selected to experiment and critique *STAR* telerobotics scenarios along closed courses and radio lessons. Some participating students will want to prepare for, and earn, their amateur radio licenses, using ham radio to learn and practice concepts in radio technology and radio communications. Overarching goals for *STAR* are to improve and sustain ARISS STEAM educational outcomes with youth. Robotics is gaining popularity among youth and adults alike. Telerobotics adds a wireless accent to robotic control. *STAR*, therefore, gives ARISS a new educational dimension to attract the attention of more education groups and their students and educators—outreach that promises to attract new audiences. The ARRL Foundation was established in 1973 by ARRL, The National Association for Amateur Radio ®, and advances the art, science and societal benefits of the Amateur Radio Service by awarding financial grants and scholarships to individuals and organizations in support of their charitable, educational and scientific efforts. As it has been noted in older posts, both satellites offer voice communications in FM and data retransmission in FSK or AFSK up to 2400 bps, such as AX.25 or APRS frames. They also transmit voice beacons in FM with the callsigns AM5SAT and AM6SAT, as well as CW, and, in the case of Hades, SSTV live images too. We thank you in advance for trying to receive their signals and of course for trying to use the repeater. EASAT-2 one will be automatically active 30 minutes after the launch although it would be a priority for us trying to have some telemetry frames first to check if all is working properly. I tell you a bit more about the satellites: EASAT-2 has been designed and built jointly by AMSAT-EA and students from the European University of Degrees in Aerospace Engineering in Aircraft and in Telecommunication Systems Engineering, with contributions from ICAI in the communications part, and it incorporates as an experimental load a basalt material from Lanzarote, similar to lunar basalts, provided by the CSIC research group on meteorites and planetary geosciences at the Institute of Geosciences, IGEO (CSIC-UCM) and that could be used as a construction material on the Moon. This project was promoted and has the collaboration of the ETSICCP (UPM). The UNESCO world geopark of Lanzarote and the Chinijo archipelago has been used for different investigations as an analogue of the Moon and Mars, also including the training of ESA astronauts. The selected basalt material meets the requirements to be used as a simulant of the existing basalt on the Moon. The purpose of the experiment is to determine its evolution in space based on periodic measurements of some of its properties. Although the experiment is limited and constitutes the first phase of this type of study, it represents an important milestone as it is the first of its kind to be introduced on such a small satellite. As for Hades, its payload consists of a miniature camera module that outputs the captured images as an audio signal in SSTV mode. The SSTV formats it uses are compatible with Robot36, Robot72, MP73 and MP115. The design of the cam module is based on the one used in the successful mission of the PSAT2 satellite, an amateur radio satellite of the United States Naval Academy and the Brno University of Technology. This camera has been operational since June 25, 2019: (http: // www.aprs.org/psat2.html). The camera chip is the Omnivision OV2640, which provides a resolution of up to 2M pixels and compressed JPEG output. The resolution is limited by the internal memory of the CPU (MCU) that controls the camera to 320x240 (typical) or 640x480 maximum. The MCU selected for the control is the STM32F446RET6, which has the smallest possible footprint with connection to a DCMI peripheral, necessary for the connection with the camera. Images can be stored in 2MB serial flash memory. The complete SSTV encoder has managed to be implemented on a 4 layer PCB with dimensions of only 38x38mm. The MCU can be fully controlled from ground stations. The firmware allows the sending of live camera images, images previously saved in flash memory, or images encoded in ROM. It also provides PSK telemetry and imaging advance scheduling with current status (event counters, temperature, voltage, light conditions, etc.) and a brief summary. The described module has been developed and manufactured in the Department of Radioelectronics of the Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic. Both hardware and firmware designs with the source codes will be available on Github under the MIT license (https://github.com/alpov/SatCam). As noted, initially only the EASAT-2 repeater is active. Hades one will be activated by remote control a few days after launch. ARISS conducts 60-80 of these specialamateur radio contacts each year between students around the globe and crewmembers with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. The Karasuyama Residents Center (KRC) is a public facility thathosts various social, educational and cultural events. The KRC is hosting thisARISS event for students (kindergarten, elementary school and junior highschool) interested in space exploration, the ISS and its mission. Twenty-fivestudents are directly involved in this project. The local amateur radioclub (JA1ZSH) is also supporting this ARISS contact. Prior to this contact,students have been using an astronomical telescope with access to a planetariumand have been learning about orbital mechanics of artificial satellites (ISS),and how amateur radio is used to communicate with the ISS. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions ofAstronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, amateur radio call sign KI5VTV. The downlinkfrequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard by listeners thatare within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relay ground station. The amateur radio ground station for this contactis in Setagaya, Japan. Amateur radio operators using call sign JA1ZSH, will operatethe ground station to establish and maintain the ISS connection. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The CubeSat, a tiny satellite with the dimensions of a square tissue box, revolutionized access to space, making it more affordable and achievable for researchers and students alike. The brainchild of professors Jordi Puig-Suari and Bob Twiggs, the CubeSat was born out of the need to solve a crucial problem. While universities aimed to train students through hands-on experience, getting their satellites into space was a daunting challenge due to the limited access to rockets and the high costs associated with launches. The innovative solution was simple yet effective, the CubeSat. They designed a standardized, risk-containment mechanism where all the risk of potential failure would be confined within the small box. This not only addressed the rocket providers' concerns about carrying student-built satellites but also reduced the cost and time required to send satellites into orbit. The CubeSat's impact was profound and far-reaching. Almost every rocket launched into space today carries CubeSats on board. The small satellite became an open standard, meaning anyone could use it without any charges, promoting uniformity and standardization across the industry. Unlike traditional satellites that could take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build, CubeSats presented a cost-effective alternative. Building a CubeSat was a fraction of the expense, and the standard's versatility allowed various scientific missions, ranging from Earth observation and mapping to space exploration. The CubeSat opened the doors to space for many countries that launched their first-ever satellites, including Colombia, Switzerland, Hungary, Vietnam, and more. Private companies also capitalized on the CubeSat revolution, stepping in as intermediaries between satellite creators and rocket providers. Companies like Maverick Space Systems acted as "Uber for satellites," arranging rides for satellites of various sizes, including CubeSats, on rockets for commercial and government clients. The CubeSat's impact also extended to educational institutions. Cal Poly's CubeSat Lab provided students with hands-on experience, allowing them to design, build, and even launch CubeSats. The educational aspect of CubeSats became so popular that high school students at Grace Brethren High School in Simi Valley also had a class on spacecraft engineering, learning about CubeSats and building AMSAT CubeSat Simulators (CubeSatSim). The CubeSatSim Project, led by Dr. Alan Johnston, KU2Y, AMSAT Vice President Educational Relations, is an initiative sponsored by AMSAT. It involves the development of a low-cost satellite emulator called CubeSatSim, designed with solar panels, rechargeable batteries, and UHF radio telemetry transmission capabilities. The CubeSatSim features a 3D printed frame and can be expanded with additional sensors and modules. The project aims to provide an accessible platform for educational purposes. LEDSAT's primary objective is to demonstrate a LED-based payload for ground-based optical tracking. One of the notable features of LEDSAT is its digipeater capability, which allows it to store and retransmit digital messages sent to the satellite, effectively acting as a transponder for long-distance communication. When opening ARRL's TQSL (Trusted QSL) application, an "Update Available" dialog box will display if a newer configuration file is available. Simply click the 'OK' button to install the latest configuration file. You can easily determine whether a new version of TQSL or its Configuration Data is available by selecting the "Help" menu and clicking on "Check for Updates...". The latest version of TQSL (version 2.6.5) can be downloaded from https://www.arrl.org/tqsl/tqsl-2.6.5.msi. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. Note that the FoxDelta box is pretty much a clone of the old and no-longer-available AMSAT box, which in turn was compatible with the commands for the GS-232. I believe I have successfully used both GS-232 and SabreTrack settings on SatPC32 with the AMSAT box, but it's been a while since I have used it. I don't recall why I tried both of them and if there was an issue with one or the other. In any case, I'm suggesting that probably either one will work. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. ARISS conducts 60-80 of these special amateur radio contacts each yearbetween students around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboardthe ISS. The MBRSC is a Dubai government organization working on the UAEspace program, which includes various space satellite projects, the EmiratesMars Mission, the Emirates Lunar Mission, and the UAE astronaut program. Check into the http://www.igatemini.com/sat controller. It eliminates the need for SATPC32 and the GS-232 and works great with any browser. Much easier to work with and lower cost. If you are using and I come 9700 or a Icom satellite radio and they yaesu G 5500. You should look into the CSN SAT tracker you’ll illuminate the GS 232 interface. There’s no software to load no comport errors. If you have a yaesu rotator go with the GS-232. Its a bit pricey but I have and it works well. Hi again, I just ordered a Fox Delta controller which should get here in a couple weeks. Right now I'm studying configuration for use with Satpc32. In one place I'm seeing is use Yaesu GS-232 in Satpc32 for the Fox-Delta controller, in another place I'm seeing use SAEBRTrackBox in Satpc32 for the controller. Not sure which to choose. Any suggestions? I'd also like to get the list of LVB tracker controller commands for use in HyperTerm. Fox-Delta uses the same firmware, but I can't find the command list. Thanks KB7ADL

First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. QSO, Today, Academy

I was curious if anybody wanted to/has already signed up to do a presentation for the rebranded QSO Today Academy? The event is September 9 and 10 I believe but the deadline to sign up for presentations is August 1. I’m willing to do it and I would like to work with some other folks to not only enhance the presentation but also to fill a virtual meeting space that they offer. We need to move on this pretty quickly or we’re gonna lose this opportunity. Presentation slots are 50 minutes with 20 to 30 minutes being a pre-recorded presentation and the rest for Q&A. The deadline for the pre-recorded presentation is September 1. My concept for doing this is a who, what, when, where, why, how format. In 20 or 30 minutes it’s hard to tell someone everything that we know about satellites work, but it’s enough to give some basic information that points the viewer to where to look for more in Information and to give a decent amount of time for them to ask specific questions. Many audience members for these sessions will have had some exposure with an Amateur satellites do them to ask specific questions after hearing a very generic presentation. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol. Having originally been launched into a 500km orbit, EO-88 has reduced in altitude rapidly over the past year due to the increased level of solar activity. Remarkably, some of the last frames of telemetry were captured as the 1U CubeSat passed over the South Western United States. The final 90 seconds show a rapid rise in temperature across all the satellites sub systems. The last frame of data was captured by David WB0IZO in New Mexico at 18:18:54 UTC showing the antenna temperatures operating about 40 degrees above normal. During the past 2 weeks, 86 stations have contributed EO-88 telemetry to the FUNcube Data Warehouse and this has given us the opportunity to study the behaviour of a functioning CubeSat as it makes its return from Space. Thank you all for your support. Having provided the last frame of data, David WB0IZO, wins the telemetry section of the AMSAT-UK re-entry competition and will receive a framed certificate of achievement. The prediction for the date and time of re-entry was very close with Paul N8HM predicting the 17th July and Larry N1MIW calculating the 21st. However, the winning entry was made by Thomas HB9SKA who correctly predicted the 18th July. Thomas also wins a framed certificate. RIP EO-88. GOODBYE AND THANKS FOR THE FUN! [ANS thanks AMSAT-UK for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- URESAT-1 Update This is an update about our satellite URESAT-1, launched with SpaceX on June 12th (Transporter-8 mission from Vanderberg) and using Alba Orbital as our space broker. First of all, URESAT-1 is a small pocketQube 1.5P (8x5x5 cm), much smaller than a Cubesat. The satellite was expelled from the D-Orbit Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) ION ten days after the launch, on June 22th at 12.10 UTC, along with MRC-100 and ROM-2 satellites. Soon after, using the OTV TLE available for pointing, signals from MRC-100 and ROM-2 were received but not ours... This made us think we again had a problem with the deployment of the antennas. Fortunately Daniel EA4GPZ could receive the URESAT-1 on June 26th using the ATA radio telescope at 22.03 UTC. The pattern of the transmissions matched and, using the IQs from the two antennas used, with two polarities, we could decodify telemetry, showing that the satellite was performing well with no resets or events. The battery was almost fully charged but the antennas were not deployed, as it was shown in the status packet received. We worked hard to improve the deployment system from our previous satellites but something hasn't gone well again. Satellite seems to be cold even in sunlight but we performed tests using temperatures as low as 20 C below zero so this should not be a problem... Doing a lot of analysis (after the ATA observation we found that our satellite was 20-30 seconds ahead of MRC-100) and with a lot of help from the Satnogs thread regarding that launch, we managed to conclude that our satellite should be NORAD object 56992. The team at Dwingeloo radio telescope on Netherlands has confirmed this with several observations these days https://network.satnogs.org/observations/7877553/ https://network.satnogs.org/observations/7881183/ https://network.satnogs.org/observations/7883687/ Using the IQs of these recordings (available here https://data.camras.nl/satnogs/) we have been able to decode new telemetry, CW and even a SSTV image from the satellite image bank. After more than three weeks in orbit the satellite is performing well and we hope that the antennas will deploy at some moment. The plan now is sending the satellite commands to try to deploy the antennas, although we are going to need a lot of power because the received signal without a proper antenna will be low. If you have a powerful station for transmitting on VHF and want to help us, please let me know. We want to thank Daniel EA4GPZ, the ATA radio telescope, PE0SAT, the Dwingeloo staff, especially Tammo Jan, and Satnogs staff for their kind help in identifying the URESAT and the reception of their signals. It has provided very valuable data on the status of the satellite. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. The satellites were launched to the International Space Station on June 5 aboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Small Satellite Orbital Deployer-26, and were released from the ISS on July 19. The primary mission of Maya-5 and Maya-6 CubeSats is to provide digital message relay service to the amateur radio community by means of an APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) digipeater onboard. The APRS digipeater onboard the CubeSats will use 145.825 MHz for both receive and transmit. Space weather can shorten the lifespans of satellites, cause radio blackouts and, in extreme solar storms, bring down power grids. Predictions from 2020 suggested the Sun would reach the peak of its 11-year solar cycle in 2025, and its intensity would be on par with the last cycle. But current observations show its activity could now peak as early as 2024. The current cycle is also on track to be more extreme, with more solar flares, sunspots and activity than the previous one, though not as big as others on record. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is planning to fly two new instruments to space that should help them keep an eye on the Sun in the coming years. A Sun-focused instrument is slated to launch on the GOES-U weather satellite next year, and another instrument will fly in 2025. HABGab - Southern New England High altitude balloon mission expected this weekend

HABGab 2023, a High Altitude Balloon (HAB) that can be used by hams as a repeater to talk (Gab) with one another, is expected to be launched midday Saturday for a 2-3 hour mission. Also on board are several experiments built by middle school students to evaluate stratospheric aerodynamics and chemistry. They plan to deploy a glider and a helicopter at 80,000 feet. This Saturday, the 22nd, is the "Moon Day" space and space science themed annual event at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas Texas. I and several associates will be manning an Amateur Radio Satellite table there, showing off the cubesat simulator, the Fox Engineering model, and other space science tools. We will also, as usual, attempt to demonstrate Amateur Radio satellite communications by attempting to work some FM satellite passes during the span of the event. Unfortunately, during the span of the event, 1500Z to 2100Z, there will only be one really good AO-91 pass and however many of the TEVEL fleet that are activated. We will be co-located at the event next to the Dallas Amateur Radio Club. The Club will be activating their W5FC club callsign and they have given permission for us to use that call for satellites as wel since all of us working the AMSAT table, are also club members.l. So please give a listen, or even call for W5FC. Hopefully, we will have some observers in toe,. Making some contacts for them will be a really cool experience for them. If someone could put this activation on the AMSAT Twitter feed, that would be great. Summary about URESAT-1 satellite until today

Dear friends, This is an update about our satellite URESAT-1, launched with SpaceX on June 12th (Transporter-8 mission from Vanderberg) and using Alba Orbital as our space broker. First of all, URESAT-1 is a small pocketQube 1.5P (8x5x5 cm), much smaller than a Cubesat. The satellite was expelled from the D-Orbit Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) ION ten days after the launch, on June 22th at 12.10 UTC, along with MRC-100 and ROM-2 satellites. Soon after, using the OTV TLE available for pointing, signals from MRC-100 and ROM-2 were received but not ours... This made us think we again had a problem with the deployment of the antennas. Fortunately Daniel EA4GPZ could receive the URESAT-1 on June 26th using the ATA radio telescope at 22.03 UTC. The pattern of the transmissions matched and, using the IQs from the two antennas used, with two polarities, we could decodify telemetry, showing that the satellite was performing well with no resets or events. The battery was almost fully charged but the antennas were not deployed, as it was shown in the status packet received. We worked hard to improve the deployment system from our previous satellites but something hasn't gone well again. Satellite seems to be cold even in sunlight but we performed tests using temperatures as low as 20 C below zero so this should not be a problem... Doing a lot of analysis (after the ATA observation we found that our satellite was 20-30 seconds ahead of MRC-100) and with a lot of help from the Satnogs thread regarding that launch, we managed to conclude that our satellite should be NORAD object 56992. The team at Dwingeloo radio telescope on Netherlands has confirmed this with several observations these days https://network.satnogs.org/observations/7877553/ https://network.satnogs.org/observations/7881183/ https://network.satnogs.org/observations/7883687/ Using the IQs of these recordings (available here https://data.camras.nl/satnogs/) we have been able to decode new telemetry, CW and even a SSTV image from the satellite image bank. After more than three weeks in orbit the satellite is performing well and we hope that the antennas will deploy at some moment. The plan now is sending the satellite commands to try to deploy the antennas, although we are going to need a lot of power because the received signal without a proper antenna will be low. If you have a powerful station for transmitting on VHF and want to help us, please let me know. We want to thank Daniel EA4GPZ, the ATA radio telescope, PE0SAT, the Dwingeloo staff, especially Tammo Jan, and Satnogs staff for their kind help in identifying the URESAT and the reception of their signals. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. Snyder, Haymarket, Virginia, USA July19, 2023—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has receivedschedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboardthe International Space Station (ISS) and young campers at Camp William B.Snyder located in Haymarket, VA. ARISSconducts 60-80 of these special amateur radio contacts each year betweenstudents around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard theISS. Camp William B. Snyder encompasses 350-acres, including amanaged wetland, about 50 miles West of downtown Washington DC, in Haymarket,Prince William County, Virginia. TheCamp hosts nearly 5,000 youth and adults each year that include resident andday camps for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts (Boy Scouts of America). The breadth of activities at Camp include;aquatics, shooting sports, handicrafts, hiking on nature trails, simulated rockclimbing, model rocketry, woodworking and STEM learning. During the week of July 17-21, scouts havealso been honing their skills and mastering tasks to earn multiple merit badges.In preparation for this ARISS contact, scouts have been learning about operatingan amateur radio satellite station that is installed at the camp. This will be a telebridge Contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask theirquestions of Astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, amateur radio call sign KI5VTV. Thedownlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard bylisteners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses thetelebridge station. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is active. As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol.
