ARISS News Release No. 23-47 Dave Jordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE Message to US Educators Amateur Radio on theInternational Space Station Contact Opportunity Call for Proposals New Proposal Window is October 1, 2023 – November 10, 2023 September25, 2023 --- The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)Program is seeking formal and informal education institutions andorganizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radiocontact with a crew member on board the ISS. ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between July 1, 2024and December 31, 2024. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine theexact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS islooking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants andintegrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. Thedeadline to submit a proposal is November 10, 2023. Proposalinformation and more details such as expectations, proposal guidelines and theproposal form can be found at www.ariss.org.An ARISS Introductory Webinar session will be held on October 5 2023 at 7 PMET. The Eventbrite link to sign up is: https://ariss-proposal-webinar-fall-2023.eventbrite.com The Opportunity Crewmembers aboard the International Space Station will participate in scheduledAmateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes inlength and allow students to interact with the astronauts through aquestion-and-answer session. AnARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radiobetween astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms andcommunities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity to learnfirsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and tolearn about space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will have anopportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless technology, andradio science. Because of the nature of human spaceflight and the complexity ofscheduling activities aboard the ISS, organizations must demonstrateflexibility to accommodate changes in dates and times of the radio contact. AmateurRadio organizations around the world with the support of NASA and spaceagencies in Russia, Canada, Japan and Europe present educational organizationswith this opportunity. The ham radio organizations’ volunteer efforts providethe equipment and operational support to enable communication between crew on theISS and students around the world using Amateur Radio. IO-117 Greencube at 2400 baud and not accessible - AMSAT Italia?

Hi, As you may know the digipeater on IO-117 "Greencube" switched to 2400 baud a few days ago.It seems that Icom IC-9700 radios do not have sufficient transmit bandwidth to make this work. It had been announced that this switch from 1200 to 2400 was to be for 72 hours.We are now at 96 hours and counting. I have not had any luck finding contact information for the satellite operators. On the website https://www.s5lab.space/index.php/digipeater-greencube/ it is shown that AMSAT Italia helped them develop the project. I mounted my Arrow antenna on a bike stand to free up my hand to write the callsigns…. Some people use a camera tripod but I had limited success with that. The bike mechanics stand was a game changer for me. Hi TJ! Welcome back! I've been helping with openGD77. What a great program. I wrote the satellite FAQ for it. Hello! Good morning folks, been trying to get on the birds again after a bit of a break (got a new radio that makes it a lot easier - RT3S with opengd77). Hearing a ton of stations but can’t remember the calls as they come in so it’s difficult to call individual stations, and can’t write it down since I’m hand holding an antenna. Any tips for me to be more effective? I am recording the pass so I don’t need to worry about logging but just knowing who to call is tough. Bob Twiggs will be partnering with the University of Louisiana and other organizations to apply for a NASA grant to fly a 3 U satellite with approximately 30 small thin sats. This program is design so high schools and Universities with minimal satellite experience can have an opportunity to place satellites in LEO. This program anticipates schools with budgets of < $500 to get to space. Bob and I will be presenting at the AMSAT symposium this initiative. If you know of a school who would like to be part of this program, please contact me off list.
