ARISS conducts 60 - 100 ofthese special amateur radio contacts each year between students around theglobe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. This will be a telebridge Contact via Amateur Radio allowingstudents to ask their questions of astronaut Alper Gezeravci, amateur radiocall sign KJ5DIY/TA5TRU. As a fighter pilot with the Turkish Air Force,Gezeravcı has 15 years of flying experience on multiple aircrafts including theT-41, SF-260, T-37, T-38, F-5, KC-135 and F-16. In addition, he served as acaptain with the Turkish Airlines for seven years. Gezeravcı has also served asa flight leader, flight safety officer, and commercial airlines captain. He isnow serving as a mission specialist for Axiom Space’s Ax-3 mission to the ISS on theSpaceX Dragon. Born in Silifke, Türkiye, Gezeravci is honored to be apart of the Ax-3 mission as the first Turkish astronaut to go to space.Through the Ax-3 mission, Gezeravcı hopes to inspire the next generation ofexplorers and ignite a passion for STEM education in teachers and studentsworldwide to each pursue their ambitions. ARISS News Release No.24-07 DaveJordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISSContact is Scheduled with Students at Alabama School of Cyber Technology andEngineering (ASCTE), Huntsville, Alabama USA January 30,2024—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has receivedschedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboardthe International Space Station (ISS) and students at the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering(ASCTE) in Huntsville, AL. ARISSconducts 60 - 100 of these special amateur radio contacts each year betweenstudents around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard theISS. TheASCTE is a statewide, residential magnet high school that began operating in 2020in its temporary home on the campus of Oakwood University, and since 2022 isnow in its permanent home in the middle of Cummings Research Park inHuntsville. For the 2023-24 school year ASCTE has 334 enrolled with 112students living on campus. In 2023, ASCTE signed a Memorandum of Understandingwith Marshall Space Flight Center, creating a partnership with NASA. TheASCTE Amateur Radio Club (N4CTE) was formed in the fall of 2022 and has thrivedwith generous support from the ARRL and assistance from the Huntsville AmateurRadio Club. Student interest in the school ham radio club led to offering anelective course in RF Engineering during the 2023-24 school year. Students inthis class have been learning about radio communications and gaining hands-onexperience with amateur radio equipment. Several departments (from science tothe humanities to cybersecurity) have also incorporated space-related lessonsin preparation for this ARISS contact. Members of the Huntsville Amateur RadioClub will be assisting ASCTE in the technical aspects of this ARISS contact andhave been preparing the students for this contact. This will be adirect contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask theirquestions of astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, amateur radio call sign KI5WSL. Thedownlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard bylisteners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relayground station. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 07:30 – 19:30 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking up and about an hour before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 07:30 – 19:30 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking up and about an hour before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. Ray, Thanks for the information. I can set up a receiver that I have that tunes 440 sideband and see if I hear anything. Doppler shift of tx and rx from the bird’s nominal operating frequency is always equal and opposite in sign..Examples of software that will control for Doppler include the SatPC32ISS version developed for IO-117 and the CSN S.A.T. Other required software to code and decode packets include UZ7HO’s soundmodem (or its equivalent) and a client user interface, the best-in-class being OZ9AAR’s GreenCube Terminal. Yes I have a multi mode 440 transceiver. Icom 471h that was part of an estate I bought years ago. I need to power it up to see if it works. Up & downlink on Greencube is 70cm USB, and requires a good receive setup for best operating enjoyment. Is it possible to decode digipeats and transmit digipeats to io117 without elaborate equipment such as the icom 9700 but just a dual band vhf uhf transceiver with adequate output power on uhf and a simple 440 beam or ground plane antenna all manually positioned? I was able to decode a number of their digipeats to the satellite, and I am grateful that they were able to decode one of mine (I got the always appreciated "Logged 73" message from them). 15 minutes later, they sent a text to "ALL" saying "Last Pass" and worked a few more people before the bird hit LOS for me. It was like they were waving good bye (they are taking down their stuff tomorrow). They were a great operation on the HF bands, but it's the first time I've worked a major DXpedition on satellite. What a thrill! I so hope that we, as a community, can find the means to prevent the decommissioning of IO-117 as announced the other day.
