First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and talk. Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule. I have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in order to schedule the school contacts. Hopefully this will help you better schedule your opportunities. Typical daily schedule Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours Workday start to Workday end=12 hours Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours The crew's usual waking period is 07:30 – 19:30 UTC. The most common times to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after waking up and about an hour before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're usually free most of the weekend, as well. SSTV events are not that often. So please check out https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS announcements. And don’t forget that the packet system is sometimes active. Check the status at https://www.ariss.org/ or http://www.issfanclub.eu to see if the packet system is active or not. ARISS News Release No.24-10 DaveJordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISSContact is Scheduled with Students at School of Telecommunications Engineering, ETSITValencia (Universitat Politecnica de Valencia), Valencia, Spain February 6, 2024 —Amateur Radio onthe International Space Station (ARISS) has received schedule confirmation foran ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboard the International SpaceStation (ISS) and students at the School of Telecommunications Engineering locatedin Valencia, Spain. ARISS conducts 60-100 of these special amateur radio contacts each yearbetween students around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboardthe ISS. TheSchool of Telecommunications Engineering, ETSIT Valencia, of the UniversitatPolitecnica de Valencia (UPV), is coordinating this ARISS contact, which willbe a milestone in the two-year course “Spacefor Kids, How to Design and Build a Nanosatellite” for teachers from 8secondary and high schools. About 160students, 14-17 years old, are also involved in this space hands-on project,which has been integrated into various courses such as; Access to space andspace environment, Satellite communication, Satellite mission design, andTesting our mission in Earth (how to analyze data). The Earth station that willbe used for this ARISS contact is located at UPV (School of Telecommunications)and has been built specifically for this contact providing the studentstechnical experience in ham satellite communications. Members of theUniversity’s Radio Club and school faculty will be supporting this contact andhave been helping with activities for high school students such as antennaworkshops and satellite receiver workshops. This will be adirect contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask theirquestions of astronaut Loral O’Hara, amateur radio call sign KI5TOM. Thedownlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard bylisteners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relayground station. The amateur radio ground station for this contact is in Valencia,Spain. Amateur radio operators using call sign EA5RKP, will operate the groundstation to establish and maintain the ISS connection. John- You say you want easy transport and setup? How about this tape measure antenna? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Zbw6dKeXir1GBFCueyoHCSlNnEkiUvF2/view?usp=… We made 15 of them when we taught ham radio and radio merit badge at Philmont Scout Ranch. The Scouts then used these to make contacts with Astronaut Kjell N. Lindgren with just 5 watt HTs. We used free tape measures from Harbor Freight (tape measure coupons) so the cost was only a couple of dollars each and took about an hour to make. This is the only antenna I use when I'm a rover. It instantly goes in and out of my car and I don't have to worry about bending anything. On the plane, I use a 5" diameter poster tube and slide it down inside that. MFJ 3 element 2 beam on satellites

Has anyone tried using the MFJ 1763 3 element portable 2m beam on the satellites? Details on it can be found at: https://mfjenterprises.com/products/mfj-1763?_pos=1&_sid=a5c24b801&_ss=r I realize this is not rated as a dualband beam, but many 2m beams do work (or at least load up) on 70cm as well. I used one of these 30 years ago in a VHF contest, and it seems like it would be very easy to travel with. The boom is about 2 feet long and the elements just screw into the boom. Takes about 30 seconds to set up and should be able to be hand held. Probably not as good as an Arrow dualband yagi, but easier to transport and set up also. ARISS News Release No.24-09 DaveJordan, AA4KN ARISS PR aa4kn(a)amsat.org FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISSContact is Scheduled with Students at Lilburn Elementary School, Lilburn, Georgia, USA February 6,2024—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has receivedschedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboardthe International Space Station (ISS) and students at the Lilburn ElementarySchool located in Lilburn, GA. ARISSconducts 60-100 of these special amateur radio contacts each year betweenstudents around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard theISS. Lilburnis a K-5, Title I, public school serving nearly 1,350 students, ages 5-11years. The school’s currentcurriculum includes relevant STEM and Computer Science topics across all gradelevels and disciplines. In advance of this ARISS contact, students have also beenlearning more about Earth’s systems, robotics, and emergency communications. InSTEM classes, students used the Design Thinking Process to solve real-worldproblems in space such as how people can one day live on the moon, designingsolutions for the spidernaut experiment, as well as how to grow food in space. Computerscience and STEM teachers that attended a Space Pioneers Amateur Radio KitInitiative (SPARKI) workshop then showed students, using lessons andactivities, how to communicate through radio. For example, fifth graders inSTEM classes built a modified telegraph to communicate between classrooms usingthe telegraph key. In the electricityunit, students used circuit kits (like the ones provided by SPARKI) andMakey-Makey kits to create simple circuits. The school is working with members of the Gwinnett American RadioSociety (GARS), ARRL, and the North Fulton Amateur Radio League (NFARL). Membersof these local ham radio organizations (NRARL) will help with the technicalaspects of ham radio operation on the campus and with conducting the ARISScontact. This will be adirect contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask theirquestions of astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, amateur radio call sign KI5WSL. Thedownlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard bylisteners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relayground station.
