July 20, "Moon Day" volunteers needed

Looking for volunteers. If you live in, or plan to be in the Dallas, Texas area onJuly 20th, why not consider helping with a fun, public outreach for AmateurRadio and Amateur satellites. “Moon Day”at the Frontiers of Flight Museum is Saturday, July 20th from 10AMto 4PM. This is a space themed STEAMevent that attracts 1200-1500 visitors who interact with multiple displays andorganizations. Amateur Radio is wellrepresented with both the Dallas Amateur Radio Club and AMSAT having apresence. For AMSAT, we have the CubesatSimulator, cubesat engineering model, displays and demonstrations on how satelliteorbits work, and parking lot demos of amateur satellite contacts. All who help get free admission to the Museum for the day,and lunch is provided as well. I would love to give you more information. The IARU approved GENEIS-A<https://iaru.amsat-uk.org/finished_detail.php?serialnum=882> with an expected mission lifetime of 4-5 hours, and it looks like in actuality the mission will be 2 hours. With an ERP of 75 microwatts and the possibility of only 2 short passes over any given earth station, the possibility of QRM to terrestrial users is pretty much nil. It is easy for me to imagine that the mission designers chose frequencies and modes that would be familiar to the most potential users. Of course one could select or design"better" modes in terms of ease of decoding, but getting casual users to have appropriate software available to use such modes is a non trivial endeavor. Don't you remember the resistance to using forward error correction on AO-40 telemetry a couple of decades ago? And that resistance came from motivated and technically advanced users! de KM1P Joe

*ARISS News Release No.24-37* *Dave Jordan, AA4KN * *ARISS PR* *aa4kn(a)amsat.org <aa4kn(a)amsat.org>* *FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE* *ARISS Contact is Scheduled with Participants at * *Youth On the Air 2024, Mount Saint Vincent University, Nova Scotia, Canada* July 5, 2024—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has received schedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and youths at the Youth On the Air 2024 camp located in Mount Saint Vincent University, NS, Canada. ARISS conducts 60-100 of these special amateur radio contacts each year between students around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. Youth on the Air (YOTA) Summer Camp is a week-long event for young amateur radio operators ages 15 to 25 from North, Central, and South America, as well as other parts of the world. This year’s YOTA, (July 7-12, 2024) is their fourth year of operation, providing young amateur radio operators a camping experience in Halifax. While at camp, these young hams are also gaining experience operating on high frequency ham radio bands from portable and permanent stations, learning how to log their contacts, exploring software defined radio, launching pico balloons, exploring Morse Code, learning electronics from kits, learning antenna theory and building antennas, participating in ham radio foxhunts, and communicating through amateur radio satellites. YOTA is working in tandem with Mount Saint Vincent University and the Halifax Amateur Radio Club and have provided peer led workshops on ham satellite communication prior to this ARISS contact. This will be a telebridge Contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions of astronaut Jeanette Epps, amateur radio call sign KF5QNU. The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard by listeners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the telebridge station. The ARISS amateur radio ground station (telebridge station) for this contact is in Paardekraal, South Africa. The amateur radio volunteer team at the ground station will use the callsign ZS6JON, to establish and maintain the ISS connection. The ARISS radio contact is scheduled for July 9, 2024 at 12:06:38 pm/am ADT (Nova Scotia, CAN) (15:06:38 UTC, 11:06 am EDT, 10:06 am CDT, 9:06 am MDT, 8:06 am PDT). *_______________________________* As time allows, students will ask these questions: 1. Not sure I understand why there are signals in the 2m band being transmitted from space below 145.800 Isn't it the case that an FT8 signal will not decode easily with doppler ft4 would be better? Also it will sweep across the 2m ft8 terrestrial frequency causing qrm. Is this another ESA Education Office project? Among many other payloads, it carries our (inside YPSAT) GENESIS-A module, attached to the second stage of the launcher. The module will transmit FT8 and live SSTV images in Robot 36 format.
