Field Day is all over. However, you are not done. Not at least until you get an email from me confirming I have received your AMSAT Field Day Summary Sheet. Deadline is 11:59PM on Monday July 10, 2017. This is earlier than the ARRL submission deadline. I need the extra time to get the article ready and off to the journal editor so everything will appear in the next issue. Do not forget to send me some photos of your site or operators. I try to get at least one for every group into the journal. This was the first field day I have been able to actually participate in for some 13 years as I worked on Saturday and Sunday. I took my M2 Leo Pack to the Texas Emergency Amateur Communications (TEAC) site in Kingwood, Texas and set up there. First pass of SO-50 for field day and I snagged a contact right after V31CI left the window. He was having a pretty good amount of activity at the start of the pass over the Houston area. I was using my Wouxun KG-UV9D HT for 70cm receive and my Icom 2200H 2m mobile for TX. Packed everything up and drove to the the Sam Houston Amateur Radio Klub (SHARK) site in Cleveland, Texas. I set everything up there and waited for the second pass of SO-50. This time, the armstrong rotors were not pointing at the right spot for a contact. Only a 22 degree pass for me, pretty much horizon shot and they kept wanting to point at 60 degrees...urgh. They missed out on their satellite contact. They enjoyed hearing the satellite nevertheless. Packed everything up and home I went. That was enough field day fun for me for one day :-). By the way, bought some nice new cables for the M2 Leo Pack for field day.... 15 feet long. I was thinking of when I use my Arrow antenna and have a 4 foot long cable. Was not really thinking the Leo Pack are much larger antennas and 15 feet does not allow for much turning of the antennas. Hello all, I am trying to install a G4UP tap board in my older FT-847. One issue I came across is the instructions call for attaching the VCC line to L3102. Only problem is my unit does not have L3102. Has anybody found a suitable point of attachment on the older FT-847's? Thanks, Dave WB9YIG

Water as Primary Method of Spacecraft Propulsion

NASA has just awarded a launch and a construction grant to Cornell University for a CubeSat designed to orbit the moon. Launch is scheduled for 2019. Congratulations to AMSAT on Field Day

I’ve operated my home satellite station each of the past few Field Day’s but 2017 out shined them all. Each pass was nearly filled with stations calling “CQ Field Day.” It was music to my ears although cacophonous at times. Even though I was limited by family events, I managed to log 33 Satellite Field Day contacts Saturday and a few more today when time permitted. Even AO-7 stayed up and gave me quite a few contacts on Saturday. I think my favorite pass was on XW-2A 25 June 2017 around 0130Z. iPhone APP error

Sry about the subject error... I noticed something odd today while operating satellites for FD. I usually get anyone who wants in the audience involved, I have someone log, I make the contact and run the s/w and radio, I also pass the mic to anyone who wants to make a sat contact, and another person will point the antenna. We find a north marker and I give that person my cell phone as a antenna pointing aid. Anyway on my cell phone running GoSatWatch an iPhone app that there was a AO-73 pass at 9:28 EST. The pass was a nice 77 degree's. I walked to my sat setup with the group and turned on the TS2000 and my Laptop, and I couldn't find the pass on my laptop. To make a longer story short after looking at all data the 9:28 on the iPhone pass was a phantom pass. I noticed it was only 38 minutes after the last AO-73 pass. I still can see it after doing a kep update in my phone. Anyone else see this? Anyone know why this might happen? I've never seen it before. 73 Jeff kb2m

DATE June 25, 2017 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-176.01 India Launches 40th PSLV With 31 Satellites On-board An Indian mapping satellite and 30 other payloads vaulted into space Friday aboard a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, arriving in an on-the-mark orbit more than 300 miles above Earth. Launching on its 40th flight, the PSLV rocketed away from the Satish Dhawan Space Center, a facility nestled on Sriharikota Island on India’s east coast, at 0359 GMT Friday (11:59 p.m. EDT Thursday). The 144-foot-tall (44-meter) launcher thundered into a mostly sunny sky over the launch base, where liftoff occurred at 9:29 a.m. local time The 1,570-pound (712-kilogram) Cartosat 2E satellite was the primary passenger on Friday’s launch, joining a fleet of Earth-imaging platforms built to feed observations of cities, crops, natural disasters and other targets to Indian civil and military authorities. Cartosat 2E radioed ground controllers moments after separation from the PSLV’s fourth stage, and engineers confirmed it unfurled its solar panels as planned. The PSLV launch team confirmed the upper stage released another Indian satellite — NIUSAT — a few seconds after Cartosat 2E. Designed for agricultural monitoring, NIUSAT is suitcase-sized satellite weighing about 33 pounds (15 kilograms) developed by students at Noorul Islam University in India’s Tamil Nadu state. In commemoration of their 20th anniversary, the ARISS team is planning to transmit a set of 12 SSTV images that capture the accomplishments of ARISS over that time. The ARISS SSTV Blog says: While still to be scheduled, we anticipate the SSTV operation to occur around the weekend of July 15. We are planning for at least a 2 day operation, but are working for a potential longer operation. Note that all of this tentative and may change based on crew scheduling and ISS operations. Starting with our first meeting in November 1996, our joint operations on Mir, becoming the first operational payload on ISS in November 2000 to our 1103rd school contact (so far), ARISS’ accomplishments have been tremendous. [ANS thanks Frank, KA3HDO, for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- LilacSat-1 Designated LilacSat-OSCAR 90 OSCAR Number Administrator Bill Tynan, W3XO, has announced that, pursuant to a request submitted to the AMSAT Board of Directors, the LilacSat-1 satellite has been assigned the designation LilacSat-OSCAR 90, or LO-90. LilacSat-OSCAR 90 was designed and constructed by the Harbin Institute of Technology in Harbin, China as part of the QB50 project to study the lower thermosphere. It was carried aboard an Orbital-ATK Cygnus cargo ship, which was launched to the International Space Station on April 18, 2017, and deployed from the ISS on May 25, 2017. LO-90 carries a voice transponder with a 145 MHz FM uplink and a 435 MHz digital voice downlink using the Codec2 open source voice codec as well as a camera open for activation by amateur radio operators worldwide. Since the launch of the first amateur radio satellite, OSCAR 1 in 1961, it has been traditional for amateur radio satellites to carry the name OSCAR, for “Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio”. [ANS thanks Paul, N8HM, for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Amateurs Recover I-Inspire-2 Satellite I-Inspire-2 is a 20 x 10 x 10cm CubeSat built by the University of Sydney in collaboration with the Australian National University and the University of New South Wales (Sydney) WIA News reports: On board the tiny spacecraft is an experiment, part of the QB50 project, designed to “explore the lower thermosphere, for re-entry research and in-orbit demonstration of technologies and miniaturised sensors”, as reported in earlier editions of the WIA broadcast. Its operational frequency was coordinated by IARU to be in the satellite segment of the 70cm amateur band. It was placed in orbit from the International Space Station in late May. The deployment was successful; however there were no signs of life when the ground stations started looking for it. The engineering group quickly tested various scenarios on the engineering model only to come to the conclusion that, due to the extended delay in the deployment, the satellite’s battery was likely to be depleted and the satellite was trapped in an endless loop, trying to deploy its antenna. The engineering group suggested that the satellite is still listening albeit with its antennas in the stowed position. This meant that the satellite command receiver might have difficulty receiving any signals from ground control stations. A set of commands were devised which, if received, would instruct the satellite to wait until the battery is charged before attempting to deploy its antenna. Both UNSW and ANU ground stations transmitted the recovery command to the satellite; however after a week or so of no success it was decided that more transmitter power was required to overcome the lack of receiver sensitivity caused by the still stowed antenna. A request for assistance was passed to EME operators around the world and many responses were received. The greatest hope for a successful recovery was thought to be PI 9 CAM using high power and a 25 m dish, normally used for radio astronomy but also EME. They were scheduled to transmit on the weekend of June 10-11. On Sunday June 11, during the morning pass, Rob VK1KW reported a strong signal every 30 seconds on I-Inspire-2’s frequency. Dimitris VK1SV who is part of the ANU team, verified reception from home around midnight. The following morning Dimitris drove to the ANU ground station and was able to send commands to the satellite for the first time since it was deployed. Many other radio amateurs around the world also reported reception of the beacon. The satellite had come back to life! This is a wonderful example of successful collaboration between radio amateurs and the academic community. If a frequency outside the radio amateur band had been used, it is doubtful that the satellite would have been brought back to life. AMSAT_ZL has reached a staging point in the development of their satellite project, KiwiSAT. We’re ready to go, ready to get up there! The KiwiSAT Team has produced a fine unit ready to launch. Then came a set-back. Our critically important Leader of the KiwiSAT Engineering Team, Fred Kennedy ZL1BYP, was struck down and driven to endure many months of medical procedures. This has have left him unable to continue his important work. It’s time for renewal. Over time the support team has aged, drifting from their positions of youth and ability. Much has been achieved but all to no avail if KiwiSAT sits on a shelf. Can you help? Thanks for chiming in and confirming the interpretation of satellite contacts are lumped together as a single band under the ARRL Field Day rules. This is how I've treated them all along. Makes for some extra work in submitting my reports to ARRL and AMSAT, but it isn't impossible. If other stations call me on an FM satellite after I've made my points-earning QSO, I will work those other stations. I won't score the extra QSOs, but I work those calling me since I could be their first satellite QSO for the 100-point bonus. When I submit my Field Day reports to ARRL and AMSAT, I specifically exclude these additional QSOs from my scores. In over a decade working satellites during Field Day, this hasn't been an issue for either competition. Same thing when I work stations on more than one satellite for the ARRL Field Day scoring - log the QSOs, but they don't go into the score. Even up at 7000-7500' around Flagstaff AZ, temperatures are probably going to be north of 90F tomorrow. I'll be somewhere up there, hoping to find a good spot with some shade, an opening in the forest for working satellites, and some luck to make a few satellite QSOs (plus some propagation on HF and 6m, too). I might even go back to somewhere on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, if all else fails... 73! Field Day Ruling LO-90

For the purpose of Field Day, LilacSat-1 or LO-09 will be considered a digital satellite and not a single channel FM satellite. The reasoning is that an FM single channel satellite has an FM voice modulated signal going up and an FM voice modulated signal coming down. With LO-90, there is an FM voice modulated signal going up however, you must have separate equipment to demodulate the digital signal. This will also score three points for each digital contact that you make. SatPC32 Error in Opening

I made the mistake of trying to set up a different radio configuration and in doing so I've apparently trashed a file and now the program will not even open to allow me to fix the issue. There error message is as follows: "Error while loading file Standard.sat The Program will be closed." Any suggestions? I reinstall SatPC32 but I'm operating portable away from the home QATH and do not have my registration serial number with me! Rick, W2JAZ

I was asked to pass this along: Sirs, next June 23-25, PT2AP and PT2AZ will attempt to activate the GRIDs GH55 / GH56 / GH65 and GH66 simultaneously, Calling North America, South America, Europe and Africa, in Satellite operation. It is not yet certain, because we need the authorization of the owner of the Farm, which we will only know when we get there. But at least one of these GRIDs is certain of the activation. We probably will not have phone coverage, and we'll be "in the dark" ... We will try to activate the SO-50 , FO-29, AO-7, AO-85 ... Look for PT2AP-9, on APRS tracker, on the days of activation ... SatPC32 questions, Part 1

I have a fully registered version, but I am still limited to 12 satellites? When I click on the "V" on the left and make it "V+" so that I can correct the uplink and downlink frequencies, I try to change the frequency using the up and down arrows under the 20, 100, 500, 1k and 5k labels. But it only changes the downlink. Why? Once I can hear my downlink and I toggle the "V" back to "V-" then how do I save the corrected frequencies to Doppler.SQF What if I want to use SatPC32 to tune around the passband and look for other stations? What are the steps for that? I want the Countdown window to attach to the right. It does that on one computer, but attaches to the left on another. I am using my FT817, and have the CAT working. When listening to FO-29, I try to tune the VFO but it keeps putting me back on the frequency shown in SatPC32. Another weird behavior...in CAT control mode, it keeps jumping between uplink and downlink frequencies. How do I stop this? Is that the special FT817 configuration I need to use? APRS FD contacts (between satellites)

Between satellite contacts, Don’t forget APRS at Field day too. Have fun! Independent of scoring (APRS gets no respect at FD anyway)… it is still a good time to play APRS radio and make contacts. Who cares about points when there are so many people on the air! Remember CQSRVR lets you call CQ everywhere in the world from your APRS radio out in the field. Just send a message to CQSRVR with the first two words as CQ FD followed by your info. Everyone else in the world who has also sent such a message is automatically logged into the CQSRVR and will get a copy. Once you have sent yours, then you too will get a copy of all future such messages from everyone else. CQSRVR just makes the global CQ to everyone else. Jeff and Paul, The way I read ARRL FD rule 7.3.7, each satellite is a separate "band," though you can make only one QSO on each FM satellite (unlimited on non-FM sats). Only one 100-point bonus, though. Look for me from WE7GV on FO-29 and possibly AO-7. 73 Ray W2RS

SatPC32 Doppler Correction/Calibration?

I'm trying to get the doppler correction/calibration set up for the various birds before Field Day, but I'm just not making any tangible progress. I've got a pair of Yaesu FT-817ND rigs, and can successfully tune both of them with SatPC32's CAT controls. Following the directions for a two-rig calibration process, I've been catching the XW-2* birds and can occasionally get the downlink correction set to where I can hear myself on the downlink. In a couple of cases I've made note of where that downlink calibration was near mid-pass (the necessary correction changed constantly across the pass). Then I go into the CAT menu, set the downlink correction to zero and the uplink calibration to the opposite sign of the previously found downlink correction at mid-pass. For example on a recent pass of XW-2C I found a downlink correction of -160 Hz was working well near mid-pass (I could hear myself) so I set the uplink calibration to 160 Hz. The "Upl. Calibr." window in the CAT pop-up says "160", and the grey box above the uplink frequency in the main window also says "160". I click on the "Change/Store Dataf File" button, then click on the "Store" "Uplink Calibration" button on the next pop-up. It says "The changings have been stored!" but the uplink calibration in both the first popup and the main window are back to zero. I click the X to close both pop-ups, and uplink correction in the main window is still 0. I exit the program, restart it, select XW-2C, enable CAT (C+) and the uplink calibration is still on zero. >From what I can see, QBITO does not appear to have been coordinated by IARU either. Some countries, such as the USA, require IARU coordination in order to use frequencies allocated to the amateur-satellite service. Even if licensed by a country which does not require it, IARU coordination is very helpful in giving your satellite project the greatest chance of success. IC-910H tuning

After years of non-use, I've got my IC-910H CIV fixed and antennas back in service. I've noticed when trying to calibrate my uplink frequency by hitting the "Swap 0" button, it sometimes does not stay ON, but rather reverts back to the frequency display rather than the -------'s it normally displays while I'm tuning. Sometimes this happens as soon as I start tuning or after a few seconds. Shouldn't the display stay blanked until I hit the Swap 0 button again? Well, as I'm typing this question I had a thought. Maybe I should turn off the CAT tuning while zero beating. Maybe CAT is what's turning the display back on. I'll have to wait for Field Day to try it out as I've got the truck packed with all my equipment now. Joe - KC2TN

CAS-4A New File Settings (SatPC32 V12.8c)

Hello, I believe I need a little help for the entries into the Doppler.SQF file for CAS-4A. Just to take one line at a time to keep it simple. Below is a line for the SSB frequencies for CAS-4A placed into the Doppler.SQF file. CAS-4A,145870.0,435220.0,USB,LSB,REV,0,0,XPDR 145.86-.88 I've also added this associated line of data into the AmsatNames.txt file 42761 2017034D CAS 4A This is my problem; I'm not able to get the frequency information to populate into the CAT Tuning dialog text box? SatPC32 Doppler Correction/Calibration?

Hello All Something I've wondered about before, while adjusting the doppler in satpc-32 should the rule of thumb apply, in that always adjust the higher frequency? So if the downlink is the higher frequency adjust the down link correction ? Or does one need to always adjust the uplink correction in Satpc-32 ? I've always just adjusted the uplink correction and for the most part it usually is pretty close but it seems I most always need to touch things up a bit. Thanks in advance. John W0JW 73

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at SCaN/Glenn Research Center, Brook Park, OH on 23 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:25 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and NA8SA. The contact should be audible over the U.S. state of Ohio and surrounding regions. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Girl Scouts of North East Ohio and NASA Glenn Research Center The Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GNSEO) is hosting an ARISS contact event in collaboration with NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC), the NASA GRC Amateur Radio Club, and Best Buy Geek Squad. The contact will take place at the Girl Scout Camp Timberlane in Wakeman, OH. This 324-acre camp includes miles of hiking trails, creeks, and ravines. It features a swimming pool, archery range, observatory, low ropes course and a meandering lake that's ideal for boating. The ARISS contact will be the highlight of the Girl Scout Space Camp week. The program, which promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills, will be the main attraction for this activity-packed family event. Zhuhai-0 1 and 2 tle inversion ?

Hi my friends, I'm afraid I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the catalog number, therefore the tle of Zhuhai-1 1 (CAS-4A) and Zhuhai-1 2 (CAS-4B) are maybe inverted. Listening the CW beacon, the Doppler shift correction with fresh tle for Zhuhai-1 2 (CAS-4B) seems correct, but for his brother nr 1 (CAS-4A), it looks like the bird is a bit ahead the prediction : at the beginning of the pass we have to decrease manually the frequency to chase the bird, at about the half of the pass it's the opposite, we have to hold a little bit the frequency shift correction. On Friday (6/23) I'll be heading back to DN31 by way of DN71-61-51-41 and QRV on request for any of those grids. Plan is to be on the road before 1200 UTC, Wyoming around 1430 ... Thought I'd do the zeroes on the way home (which will be MONDAY 6/26), starting in DN40. In addition to DN50, I might just return to the DN60/DM69 grid line that Pam and I did on Fathers Day. Current plan is to leave the QTH of KB7QG around 1400 UTC and drive US 40. Again, I'm QRV for linear, FM or Packet ... just send me an email. If you miss this trip, Pam and I will be headed back (again) over the Fourth of July weekend.

ARISS SSTV Commemorative Activity Coming Soon

All, In commemoration of our 20th anniversary, the ARISS team is planning to transmit a set of 12 SSTV images that capture the accomplishments of ARISS over that time. While still to be scheduled, we anticipate the SSTV operation to occur around the weekend of July 15. We are planning for at least a 2 day operation, but are working for a potential longer operation. Note that all of this tentative and may change based on crew scheduling and ISS operations. Starting with our first meeting in November 1996, our joint operations on Mir, becoming the first operational payload on ISS in November 2000 to our 1103rd school contact (so far), ARISS' accomplishments have been tremendous. We have touched the lives of many and inspired and educated countless students to pursue science, technology, engineering and math careers. Please stay tuned as more details on our SSTV event will be communicated in the coming weeks. Please spread the word. I am in Virginia, grid FM08 and according to my calculations the series starts a good run at about 6:17 pm EST (20:17 GMT) each evening. A few weeks ago I posted the following message to the AMSAT-BB. The situation has definitely improved, but it is still happening. Just a few minutes ago at 2044Z, the dreaded mode switch was triggered again. It appeared that a station was trying to “find himself” while running much more power than necessary, and ... For those that didn’t get the message: AGAIN, PLEASE USE THE LOWEST POSSIBLE UPLINK POWER!!! Ron W5RKN Date: Wed, 31 May 2017 18:42:08 –0500 Subject: [amsat-bb] Be kind to our old lady AO-7 Lately, AO-7 has spontaneously switched out of Mode B during passes over the US and probably other places. Since AO-7’s batteries are not functioning, it relies totally on its solar cells, which have limited capacity. As more users are online, and especially when one or more users are using more than the minimum necessary uplink power, the power system will fail and cause a switch out of Mode B. I have saved a FlexRadio waterfall display of four passes from around 2200Z from the four previous days. In three out of four passes, just before the unexpected mode switch, a strong CW signal popped up around 145.950 MHz. AO-7 switched out of Mode B seconds thereafter. I can’t say for sure it was the cause but it happened three days in a row. Today’s pass had only one user, a low-power digital signal which appeared briefly, and no mode switch occurred. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 13 US Schools/Groups Move Into Phase 2 of ARISS Selections June 19, 2017 - The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), US partners of Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS), are pleased to announce the schools/organizations selected to move into Phase 2 for ARISS ham radio time slots in the first half of 2018. A review team selected 13 proposals after the recent proposal window closed. The 13 groups will go forward into Phase 2, the submitting of an equipment plan to host a scheduled amateur radio contact with crew orbiting on the International Space Station. The primary goal of the ARISS program is to engage young people in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) activities, and raise their awareness of space exploration, amateur radio, communications, and related areas of study and career possibilities. LilacSat-1 - First QSO

Thanks to KB1PVH for my first QSO on LilacSat-1. It's really not that tough if you follow the steps to get the Linux live CD image up and running. My own audio quality was poor, either due to signal strength or lack of Doppler compensation on the uplink. I'll have to try tweaking that, but it was fun. KB1PVH's signal was easily readable on the 15 degree maximum elevation pass. My setup for receiving the downlink was an Arrow antenna, preamp, FUNcube Dongle Pro+, and a 4 year old Dell laptop running the Linux Live CD. I used my FT-817 on the uplink so I could make fine adjustments on the uplink frequency. I have read lots of comments from individuals wanting to try something new. This certainly qualifies! LilacSat-1 was deployed from the ISS, so it will have a limited orbital lifetime. Work it while it's up there. IC-821H problems

I'm having a strange issue with my 821. Periodically I lose all sensitivity, which I've particularly noticed on 2m SSB. I can attach and detach an antenna with no change in the noise level, and can't hear anything in the receiver (like the XW-2* beacons, or the AO-73 telemetry). Resetting the radio seems to fix it. It doesn't appear to be affecting 70cm, although I haven't had much chance to test that (there's not always a mode j sat up at the same time as a mode b one, and when it happens I'm normally just trying to reset the radio as fast as I can do I can operate the pass). Each year the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) sponsors Field Day as a "picnic, a campout, practice for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN!" The event takes place during a 24-hour period on the fourth weekend of June. For 2017 the event takes place during a 27- hour period from 1800 UTC on Saturday June 24, 2017 through 2100 UTC on Sunday June 25, 2017. Those who set up prior to 1800 UTC on June 24 can operate only 24 hours. The Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) promotes its own version of Field Day for operation via the amateur satellites, held concurrently with the ARRL event. This year should be easier than many years since we have about 10 transponders and repeaters available, with more possible before Field Day. Users should check the AMSAT status page at http://www.amsat.org/status/ and the pages at http://www.amsat.org/?page_id=177 for what is available in the weeks leading up to field day. The congestion on FM LEO satellites is always so intense that we must continue to limit their use to one-QSO-per-FM-satellite. This includes the International Space Station. You will be allowed one QSO if the ISS is operating Voice. It was suggested during past field days that a control station be allowed to coordinate contacts on the FM satellites. There is nothing in the rules that would prohibit this. This is nothing more than a single station working multiple QSO's. If a station were to act as a control station and give QSO's to every other field day station, the control station would still only be allowed to turn in one QSO per FM satellite while the other station would be able to submit one QSO. The format for the message exchange on the ISS or other digital packet satellite is an unproto packet to the other station (3-way exchange required) with all the same information as normally exchanged for ARRL Field Day, e.g.: W6NWG de KK5DO 2A STX KK5DO de W6NWG QSL 5A SDG W6NWG de KK5DO QSL If you have worked the satellites on Field Day in recent years, you may have noticed a lot of good contacts can be made on some of the less-populated, low-earth-orbit satellites like FO-29, AO-7, AO-73, NAYIF-1 or the XW satellites. During Field Day the transponders come alive like 20 meters on a weekend. The good news is that the transponders on these satellites will support multiple simultaneous contacts. The bad news is that you can't use FM, just low duty-cycle modes like SSB and CW. THE 2017 AMSAT FIELD DAY RULES The AMSAT Field Day 2017 event is open to all Amateur Radio operators. Amateurs are to use the exchange as specified in ARRL rules for Field Day. The AMSAT competition is to encourage the use of all amateur satellites, both analog and digital. Note that no points will be credited for any contacts beyond the ONE allowed via each single-channel FM satellite. Operators are encouraged not to make any extra contacts via theses satellites (Ex: SO-50). CW contacts and digital contacts are worth three points as outlined below. 1. Analog Transponders ARRL rules apply, except: - Each phone, CW, and digital segment ON EACH SATELLITE TRANSPONDER is considered to be a separate band. - CW and digital (RTTY, PSK-31, etc.) contacts count THREE points each. - Stations may only count one (1) completed QSO on any single channel FM satellite. If a satellite has multiple modes such as V/u and L/s modes both turned on, one contact each is allowed. If the PBBS is on - see Pacsats below, ISS (1 phone and 1 digital), Contacts with the ISS crew will count for one contact if they are active. PCSat (I, II, etc.) (1 digital), - The use of more than one transmitter at the same time on a single satellite transponder is prohibited. 2. Digital Transponders We have only APRS digipeaters and 10m to 70cm PSK transponders (see Bob Bruninga's article in the March/April, 2016 issue of the AMSAT Journal). Satellite digipeat QSO's and APRS short-message contacts are worth three points each, but must be complete verified two-way exchanges. The one contact per FM satellite is not applied to digital transponders. The use of terrestrial gateway stations or internet gateways (i.e. EchoLink, IRLP, etc.) to uplink/downlink is not allowed. On board the tiny spacecraft is an experiment, part of the European QB50 project, designed to “explore the lower thermosphere, for re-entry research and in-orbit demonstration of technologies and miniaturised sensors”, as reported in earlier editions of the WIA broadcast. Its operational frequency was coordinated by IARU to be in the satellite segment of the 70cm amateur band. It was placed in orbit from the International Space Station in late May. The deployment was successful; however there were no signs of life when the ground stations started looking for it. The engineering group quickly tested various scenarios on the engineering model only to come to the conclusion that, due to the extended delay in the deployment, the satellite's battery was likely to be depleted and the satellite was trapped in an endless loop, trying to deploy its antenna. The engineering group suggested that the satellite is still listening albeit with its antennas in the stowed position. This meant that the satellite command receiver might have difficulty receiving any signals from ground control stations. A set of commands were devised which, if received, would instruct the satellite to wait until the battery is charged before attempting to deploy its antenna. Both UNSW and ANU ground stations transmitted the recovery command to the satellite; however after a week or so of no success it was decided that more transmitter power was required to overcome the lack of receiver sensitivity caused by the still stowed antenna. A request for assistance was passed to EME operators around the world and many responses were received. The greatest hope for a successful recovery was thought to be PI 9 CAM using high power and a 25 m dish, normally used for radio astronomy but also EME. They were scheduled to transmit on the weekend of the 10th and 11th of June. On Sunday the 11th of June, during the morning pass, Rob VK1KW reported a strong signal every 30 seconds on I-Inspire-2's frequency. Dimitris VK1SV who is part of the ANU team, verified reception from home around midnight. The following morning Dimitris drove to the ANU ground station and was able to send commands to the satellite for the first time since it was deployed. Many other radio amateurs around the world also reported reception of the beacon. The satellite had come back to life! This is a wonderful example of successful collaboration between radio amateurs and the academic community. If a frequency outside the radio amateur band had been used, it is doubtful that the satellite would have been brought back to life. I am trying to get back into working Satellites again after a hiatus of about 7 years. In trying to catch up, difficult to sort out the current landscape of what can be worked. So a couple of probably dumb questions for you guys who seem very much on top of the entire subject. - So where or how can I get a complete list of all the Sats that are currently workable with a full duplex FM HT setup? - in reading about the new CAS 4A &4B, it says they have linear transponders and it lists VHF and UHF frequencies for up & down-link. So is linear transponder a code word for SSB, can't be worked using an HT? - What exactly is a Linear Transponder? Tnx & 73 Paul kc2nyu

Grid Activations

I am thinking about activating a number of grids while in Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota in August. The grids would be DM79. DN70, DN71, DN72, DN73, DN74, DN83, and DN84. Hi Matthew, I think the Canadian Rover Grids of mine escaped somehow. My suspicion is that K8BL/VEx didn't get thrown in with the ones from plain K8BL, possibly because they have a different DXCC Country Code. Dunno!! LoTW Gurus at ARRL are still analyzing and helpful. ? Sked Allowed for Field Day?

Hi Folks, I have read through the Field Day rules and was looking for if it was not allowable to make a sked for a contact during Field Day. I could not find such a rule, but may have missed it. If it is allowed, would anyone be interested in setting up a sked? I am in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia grid FM08. Would probably prefer to use an SSB satellite. Just to report that I heard CAS 4A and CAS 4B satellites today 16th June 2017 during a pass 0915 hrs GMT. CAS 4A beacon 145.855 Mhz +/- and AX25 145.835 Mhz +/- CAS 4B beacon 145.910 Mhz +/- and AX25 145.890 Mhz +/- Both satellites very strong signals and I was using the keps from Celestrak.com ( New launches ) No activity on transponders. Iceland/Greenland/Faroe Islands on Satellite July 4-19

Hello bird peoples of the night, Good news. I have finalized plans for an upcoming trip to Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. Once again, this is a trip with family so radio is not my priority. I will put forth my best effort to give these rare entities and associated grids to everyone in range. I will be arriving in Iceland at about 0000Z on July 5 and spend one night at the hotel on the airport (access to HP83/84 line). We will be in Iceland until July 10 with numerous grids in the HP and IP fields possible, no strict plan yet. We will continue on to the Faroe Islands July 10-14. I will make an effort to operate from both IP61 and IP62 while in the Faroes. Finally, we will head to Greenland on July 14th staying until the 18th. The destination in Greenland is Ilulissat in GP49. I do not anticipate any other grids to be activated in Greenland, although if there is an opportunity I will, but I don't expect any opportunities. From GP49 all of North/Central America and Europe should be in range, along with portions of South America, Asia, and Africa, much of it even possible on SO-50. I anticipate a nearly perfect horizon to the west. On the 19th we travel back to the US with a several hour connection in Iceland. I will also have two nights on the beginning and end in New York City, and July 21-25 in Florida (anyone who needs EM90, hit me up). In exciting news, this very well may be the last DX use of NJ7H. Don't worry, I am not retired from roving. I am beginning my training at the FAA as an air traffic controller on July 26th and will be very busy with that. I expect facility placement in late October, and I am requesting Alaska. Although I cannot yet be certain, I have been told that I should expect to receive my request. QSLing for this trip will be via LoTW. I still need to get some new generic cards printed, but if you need paper I'll get cards printed eventually, just don't expect rush service (I have some from other trips in the backlog, don't worry I havn't forgotten). LOTW QSL - K8BL Rover Glitch

Dave, et al: My logging program did a wacky thing when I uploaded Q's from the VHF Contest. It sent my Rover Q's from the last few years to LoTW and they were overwritten with my home Grid! I spent over 4 hours the other night taking the original rover files and reloaded the original Log Files from my trips, but LoTW didn't overwrite the bad Q's with the correct info. LoTW is sitting there with BOTH data, but not confirming the correct Grid. The data just sits there side-by-side. I have been working with the LoTW Help Desk and it is being looked at for resolution. Hopefully, they'll have something to fix things soon. V31CI in Belize June 20th - 27th

Satellite Friends and Colleagues, Next week from 6/20 thru 6/27 I'll be on Ambergris Caye, in the country of Belize, in grid square EK67. I'll of course have a radio and an arrow with me and I'm planning to operate as V31CI on selected satellite passes when other non-ham tasks don't have me busy. Since V31NJ was just down there in April, most of the serious grid chasers have already got their squares filled in, so I'm going to focus on SO50, AO85, and FO29, where the passes reach the most number of people possible. I do plan to try and get to EK68 and EK57 for at least one pass during the week (to increase my rover totals). I'll announce my plans on Twitter @KG5CCI - so watch there for updates. CM79 /mm

I'm currently considering another /mm activation of a hard to reach California grid, this time it's CM79. I see that there have been land expeditions in the past but the area is not very conducive to working satellites. Heavy tree cover and rugged land make it challenging to get to and operate from. Working from the coast isn't an option as the land is very steep leaving only really high passes and keeping a lot of people out of the footprint. That said, I think I've found enough excuses to need to go /mm again. There seems to be at least one charter out of Shelter Cove just north of CM79 that could potentially get me into a good spot to work the grid properly. Before I invest too much effort into researching my options I would like to know how much interest there is in this grid. I know several ops on twitter are lacking it in their logs but I would like to reach a larger audience to see who is interested. Satellite Station For Sale

I'm posting this ad on behalf of a third party who wishes to remain anonymous for now. He has both a base and a portable ham satellite station for sale. The base station includes a Kenwood TS-790A transceiver, amplifiers, power supplies, and antennas for the 2 m, 70 cm, and the 2.4 GHz bands. The portable station consists of a Kenwood TH-D72 handheld transceiver and an Arrow dual-band yagi antenna. He would prefer to sell each as complete packages. He's asking $4165 (CDN) for the base station and $390 (CDN) for the portable gear. Contact me for further information. AO-7 Mode A

Mode A has always been weaker than Mode B, but with a decent 10-meter antenna it is quite usable. Many operators access Mode B with a 2-meter beam of some sort, then try to hear Mode A with a dipole or ground-mounted vertical , then complain that they cannot hear it. There is no substitute for a good 10-meter beam. A tri-bander usually works too, but check the tuning to see that the SWR isn't too high at 29.5 MHz. If it is, you may have to re-tune it or even shorten the elements slightly. If you absolutely cannot put up a beam, your second choice can be a 10-meter ground plane, elevated so it is mounted in the clear. It has no forward gain of course, but it will give you a low radiation angle, which will help in hearing AO-7 when it is at low elevation which it is most of the time. With Field Day coming up, a little attention now to your 10-meter antenna will show up in your results later. 73 Ray W2RS
