ARRL Convention - follow-up

Hi! Even though we were not permitted to record our presentations during the ARRL Centennial Convention just over a week ago, I was able to record the satellite demonstrations done outside the convention center over those three days. I had attempted to work SO-50 on Friday (18 July) and Saturday (19 July) afternoon from outside the convention, but could not get through during those passes. AO-7, on the other hand, saw more success. This video is a combination of the audio from the AO-7 downlink with photos from the demonstration and AMSAT's presence at the ARRL convention. This pass was on Thursday, 17 July, at 2026 UTC - as our day-long training seminar wrapped up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5TjXbuLv5s On Saturday (19 July) morning, I was able to have a short contact with astronaut (and US Navy Commander) Reid Wiseman. Again, I did not have a video, but took the audio from the contact and added a photo slideshow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoFbhPXsUx0 The ISS was passing to the southwest of Hartford, in the direction where I had the easiest time hearing it. An earlier pass that went across the northern sky was harder, dealing with the tall buildings in that direction. The last video is an actual video of an AO-7 demonstration later in the day on Saturday. The convention had officially closed about 20 minutes before the start of this video, and there was a nice crowd that stopped by to take in the demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHd91H_t88o This video shows an example of AO-7's recent behavior, where it will switch from mode B to mode A during a pass. Unfortunately, this switch took place around the time AO-7 was directly over Hartford. All 3 demonstrations, along with the unsuccessful SO-50 demonstrations, took place on the plaza in front of the Connecticut Convention Center, in grid FN31ps. From this location, there was good visibility to the south and west, and not so much toward the east (looking at the convention center and its parking garage). The two AO-7 passes had very high elevation as the satellite passed from south to north, and the ISS pass was a high pass across the southwestern sky. Loss of Cubesat Designer?

I heard part of something on the news about one of the victims of the Aircraft shootdown in the Ukraine was a young Aerospace engineer working on a design for a constellation of cubesats for low cost communication with individuals on the ground. Sounds like a HAMsat project to me. Anyone know the story? Bob, WB4APR

Yaesu G-5500 grounding question

Hi all! I want to use the ground conductor that is in both the elevation and azimuth rotators on pin #3 on the rear connectors. The plug on the rotator controller is a two prong polarized type. The upshot of this is that there is no actual connection to earth ground at the chassis. Can I just add a grounding lug to the back of the controller and attach it to earth ground? The reason this is an issue is that I have installed mast (fiberglass cross arm, really) mount preamps. My radios are battery powered, hence no real ground at the end of the coax. Treading lightly here as there are ogres lurking. Norm n3ykf

Digital Satellites Question

I have been following the digital satellite discussion with great interest. Both sides have valid points. I would like to pose a strictly engineering question. Keep in mind that I'm not an engineer but consider myself reasonably well read on the amateur satellite world. A digital satellite would imply loads of processing power on the satellite. I would assume that with this additional activity that there will be more hardware on the bird with more complexity as this won't be a bent pipe system. With more physical hardware of much more complexity in orbit what about the radiation hazards to this more complex and physical hardware heavier system? Wouldn't a software based system be prone to radiation induced hardware and software glitches? What about shielding etc? Ham Radio Now Announces Kickstarter Campaign to Attend & Record Videos of 2014 ARRL/TAPR DCC (Digital Communications Conference) in Austin, TX. Gary, KN4AQ of ARVN & Ham Radio Now produced high quality video of the ARRL/TAPR DCCs (Digital Communications Conference) in 2008 and 2009 (released on DVD), and 2011, 2012 and 2013 (released on high-definition streaming video). The videos covered every talk, including the Saturday banquet "keynote" and the Sunday Seminar, usually a four-hour "deep dive" into a single subject. The videos have been an invaluable resource for hams who weren't able to attend the sessions, and even for hams who were there in person and wanted a review. Gary, KN4AQ is based in North Carolina. Last year, he conducted a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to cover both his expenses to travel to the 2013 ARRL/TAPR DCC (Digital Communications Conference) in Seattle and produce & make available on-line video of the entire DCC including all sessions. LituanicaSAT-1 status update

Dear friends, FM transponder is OFF, it's mission is completed, thank you for all the good responses. Based on this there will be more projects in the future making benefit for HAM people of the World. Currently only telemetry packets are to transmit data every 15 seconds. On-board temperature is rising and the altitude is being lost quickly therefore some peculiarities due to changing thermal environment can occur. Would appreciate any of your reports tracking last orbits of LituanicaSAT-1. Thank you for all of your support! Vytenis B.

I am pleased that AMSAT-NA is going to move forward with a LEO CubeSat, single channel, analog FM transponder. If successful, it will be immensely popular worldwide. My hope is that it will help usher in a new, improved series of satellites with more advanced payloads. There is great potential in the ranks of AMSAT-NA and groups worldwide to achieve lofty goals. Look at what AMSAT-UK and others have already done in the CubeSat platform. The digital mode capabilities discussed here on the AMSAT-BB are just the tip of the iceberg to where technology can take us. It's very easy to be a pessimist or a cynic. Very little risk is involved. It doesn't take any cojones to sit in a comfy chair and email snarky comments. If you are optimistic about a project and it fails, your peers may see your actions as a fool. Even worse, people may withdraw their financial support for future missions. Even after great success, the optimist may receive very little praise, especially in this field of voluntary amateur radio service. AMSAT-NA is boldly entering the CubeSat world with the planned satellite series FOX-1. If you haven't noticed, there have been full-page advertisements soliciting volunteers in the AMSAT Journal. There is plenty of opportunity to serve and influence the direction of AMSAT-NA. If we all threaten to leave and stop paying our dues when things don't go our way, what will we ever accomplish? But if the goal of satellite operation is from the shack-potato position, why not just use the internet and not bother. Don't forget the TOTAL FAILURE of the original SAT-PHONE industry when they ignored cellphones and fiber. No one would bother with a sat-phone when their $9/mo cell phone could do the job almost 99% of the time and call anywhere on the planet. The only thing SAT-PHONEs turned out to be good for are wilderness communications, and there are plenty of places on earth that fit that category. Probably 90% of the earths surface is a wireless desert. But the 99% of the worlds population lives in that wired-10%. I have also heard that these days, " all of the satellite communications carried by all the comm satellites worldwide could fit on a SINGLE fiber. The value of ham radio is providing communications where other systems cannot. And of course, playing with toys just for fun. Inclusion

Good day all, Let me attempt to add a few cogent thoughts to the ongoing 'future of AMSAT' discussion... I don't know if I am the typical ham or not, but I've been licensed for 35+ years... started in my teens. Have built some of my own gear, joined clubs, worked HF, chased DX, dabbled in lots of areas of ham radio... I've volunteered a lot of my time to different ham projects, emergency communications, repeaters (owned 3), digital networks, been a VE and so on. I'm at a point in my life and hobby that as the result of an agreement with 'she who must be pleased' I am more or less relegating myself to the simple 'sport' and enjoyment of the hobby. I build antennas, chase DX, chase grids, etc. One of the things I decided to do was get back on satellites just over a year ago. I tried an FM sat for the first time. I loved it and pursued more depth in the 'satellite' sub-hobby of ham radio. That said... my original introduction to satellites was RS-12/13 in the mid 90s. I was living in a condo with little to no antenna and was actively chasing the CQ 50 awards (CQ magazines 50th anniversary). One of the tasks was to make a satellite QSO. Now how was I going to do that with an HF rig and a Hustler vertical on my deck. I researched, found out about RS-12 and gave it a try. My first contact on the bird was so exciting, I whooped and hollered so loud I scared the heck out of my wife. It was as exciting if not more so than my first Novice CW contact in 1977. I was really hooked and spent the next 5-6 years really enjoying that bird. Dinner times revolved around sat passes. I wrote up a webpage dedicated to helping hams make their first satellite contact on RS-12/13, maintained a forum to help people with getting on the bird and making scheduled contacts, etc. (google RS-12/13 and references to my old call and webpage STILL come up) - I volunteered my time and enjoyed it a lot... now ask me why I never joined or supported AMSAT. It was because I had a number of run ins with AMSAT members that basically did not have the time of day for me. (Jerry K5OE was the one glaring exception) Their attitude was that RS-12/13 uses HF bands... it was not a 'REAL' satellite. I was introduced to this early on in my research to get on a bird when I called the AMSAT office asking for help and was referred to a field rep(?) about a hundred miles for me. When I called him, he told me he worked only digital birds, knew nothing about what I wanted to know and in general BLEW ME OFF. He did not refer me on to anyone, never got back to me or gave a rats. So why did I need AMSAT? Why should I give money to a bunch of arrogant so & so's that are interested in things way over my head. Now skip ahead to this last year. I got on ham forums, I asked questions... I bought an HT to dip my toe in the water. I built a little homebrew antenna and made a contact on an FM bird. Far OUT!!! It was cool and this was fun... just like before. But, what more was there to do?!! I traded for a UHF all mode to go with my VHF... I built home brew beam antennas and put them up. I later upgraded my rig. I started chasing grids again and enjoying running across some of the same hams. I was fortunate to got to know them... they were INCLUSIVE and encouraged me to join AMSAT... so I did. Now I am exposed to more of what AMSAT does and I see the benefit. I see now that I ran into some NON-inclusive hams years ago. Shouldn't judge the whole group by a few, etc. BUT, the problem is... first impressions are often very lasting. They lasted with me for 15+ years. Here is my point. Without introductory birds (FM) and an inclusive attitude, AMSAT is never going to grow and acquire the volunteer and monetary support to ever achieve some of the very things being complained about. You want to recruit new hams and get them to financially support AMSAT and it's endeavors? Then you need to develop an inclusive attitude. On this reflector I've heard comments that basically imply anyone who wants to go outside with an HT and wave a yagi around is stupid. <ZAP!> There went a whole bunch of future support dollars out of the coffers. I don't think I need to touch the HEO/LEO debate, but now I am hearing that FM birds are old hat... no good... we need better. <ZAP!> There goes another huge chunk. You know what I and many 'new sat ops' hear? "What you like is DUMB!" - I LIKE FM birds... I LIKE waving my yagi around... and I joined AMSAT! I just sent in my BOD ballot and I'm trying to figure out how much I can donate to the Fox launch. Guess what... I MIGHT like digital birds. I've joined AMSAT now and you've got my attention... INTEREST ME! Tell me what I am missing... give me a presentation, a paper, a video, an article... hell, come buy me a cuppa joe and explain it to me. But for gosh sakes, do you really think that telling me that what I like to do is DUMB and then whine that I, as an AMSAT member, won't pay for whatever it is YOU like to do is a good strategy?!!! I am a 'sport' ham... I enjoy chasing DX, grids, the sats, etc. I have no current interest in digital modes on satellites... mostly because I probably don't UNDERSTAND THEM. My knowledge of digital on sats is guys with complicated stand alone setups and expensive TNCs that forwarded BBS messages. I mean, are you talking digital voice like DSTAR? Forwarded text? Live messaging? Video? What???? No one has ever explained it to me!!! Can I make QSOs on it and chase grids? All I walk away with after reading the comments is... 'Gee, apparently what I like is DUMB'. Yes, I have used a little hyperbole, but I'm trying to make a point. This pervasive attitude is driving away the very people that could potentially support and later get actively involved in your 'advocated flavor' of the sat hobby. You simply MUST remember that the majority of sat ops don't fall out of the trees fully grown. Those guys that try out sats with an HT and a home made antenna... there's a lot of them. I'm basically one of them. Some will come and go, some might stay... but if you discourage them and exclude them by insulting their current flavor of operating, why would they hang around? I eventually came back around, met a different sort and stayed. And now I'm taking the time to say what a huge chunk of those that go away never bother to say. That being, "Help me enjoy what I like and I'll help you enjoy what you like. Interest me in what you like and I might like it, too. But insult me and insist that I change, and I'll find someplace more fun and inviting to spend my time and money." I hope my thoughts have been useful and I ask that you please take them in the spirit they are offered. I'd like to see AMSAT and the satellite hobby grow. I understand the frustration, but it seems that many are letting that frustration kill the very thing that could help alleviate their pain. In my email of last evening about LO-78 I failed to mention one important thing relating to it. Where to find the best TLEs. The only place LituanicaSat-1, LO-78 showsup is in the Celestrak "Cubesats" listing. It has never shown up in the "Amateur" listing that they publish. WA5QGD's Keps distribution does have it as LO-78 but since he only updates once a week, and since the orbit is decaying rapidly, even two day old TLE's will be off. This morning on the 1220Z ish pass for me only heard K8YSE and AA5PK. I will listen on the 0422z pass for me on this 7-27 and see if it is on but I bet it is not. Tom, N5HYP

Dear Friends, With heavy heart, I sadly convey, that our little angel 'HAMSAT VO- 52' would no more be able to offer her services to the 'Amateur Radio Fraternity. HAMSAT VO-52 succumbed in Space on 11th July 2014, while she was on her 49,675th orbit, due to the failure of on-board lithium ion batteries that have met their end of life. Although her desires were to be at work with other systems and sub- systems working normal as per the latest telemetry received, the on- board computer recurring to 'Reset' mode due to the failure of batteries is preventing her to do so. Hence, it is decided not to expect any more meaningful and reliable services from HAMSAT VO-52. Since 11th July, every best possible effort has been put in by the spacecraft controllers here in ISTRAC Bangalore to revive her back to life and to help her with work load, so she won't be swamped when she returns, but with no luck. Though it is hard, the HAMSAT VO-52 designers and controllers insist that the time has come to let the little angel free in space to go drifting on her own from their care and custody. Thus, today 21st July 2014, ISRO have decommissioned 'HAMSAT-VO52' officially. We all here in ISRO do definitely hope that 'HAMSAT VO-52' worked tirelessly and was a good friend to the 'Amateur Radio Fraternity' around the World. Patrick Stoddard WD9EWK had planned on being outside the convention center for ISS passes, prepared to show off the ISS digipeater, and - if a voice was heard on 145.800 MHz talk to an ISS crewmember. Patrick reports, "The first of the three workable passes from Hartford came a little while before the convention officially opened for the day at 0835 local/1235 UTC. The ISS was passing across the northern sky, with maximum elevation of 25 degrees. I heard only packet on 145.825 MHz, and was ableto bounce a few packets through the ISS digipeater using a TH-D72A and Elk dual-band log periodic antenna. "The next pass, around 1010 local/1410 UTC, was the best of the passes fornthe morning - going across the southwestern sky with maximum elevation ofn59 degrees. I had a radio listening to both 145.800 and 145.825 MHz. I heard nothing on 145.825 MHz, but thought I heard something on 145.800 MHz. The latest version of the FUNcube Dashboard seems to decode rather well, at least comparable to the previous release. http://funcube.org.uk/working-documents/funcube-telemetry-dashboard/ I didn't get a chance to decode a whole pass due to SO-50 AOS coinciding with the TCA for AO-73, but by that time I had decoded 93 frames. I'm confident that if I had continued tracking AO-73 I would have reached 130+ frames. This is with a 7 ele linear yagi, no preamp, full az/el control, and the FCDP+. Good job team! 73 Clayton W5PFG

It doesn't appear on the Amateur list there at all (Don't understand why that is) and WA5QGD's distribution is 10 minutes early. It is unpredictable, but I suspect that LituanicaSat-1, LO 78 will be on for the morning decending (NW to SE passes on Satruday morning 7-26. In EM 12 I have a 26 degree pass starting at 1229Z. LO-78 was up for these morning passes on Wednesday and Thursday mornings but not up on any passes on Thursday late night (US time) or the Friday 124X Z pass for me this morning but was on for my 0442Z here on the 26th. On Wednesday and Thursday the only station besides myself was K8YSE/7. We never quite made it on Wednesday but completed a QSO on Thursday morning. No one else was on the bird. My 07-26 0442 pass saw no one else on the bird but myself. My observations as a purely handheld (Sometimes tripod) operator are these. The satellite is a challenge to work but provides quite nice audio when you can. As it decays, the pass times continue to shorten. They are now only 7 minutes. For us handheld guys, maybe 5 minutes of usable pass. Mid pass it really trucks across the sky. Doppler shift is quite fast as well on the 435 downlink. Published downlink is 435.1755. I start at 435.1755 so I start at 435.185 and down. 67 Hz PL and Narrow FM at 145.95 or else keep your modulation quite to avoid over-deviating. Doing so will cause the PL receive on the satellite to squelch out. Again low modulation bandwidth or talk quietly. Repeater on board has a tail so if you hit it you will hear the tone after you unkey. There is even a voice and CW ID so that makes it interesting. Satellite has hefty spin fades so that adds to the challenges. Hope to see a few additional folks to try this before it goes away. Mars satellites' orbits changed to avoid comet tail

When I first heard this story on the radio, I had to check the calender to see if it was April First, but it is a real story. A comet was discovered early last year coming up from below the plane of the ecliptic. It is named after the Siding Spring Observatory in Australia where it was spotted in a 20 inch scope. It is expected to pass Mars at a distance of 132,000 kilometers on October 19th. For scale, that is about a third of the distance from the Earth to the Moon. No comet has ever been recorded coming that close to the Earth. After this near-miss (George Carlin would say, near-hit), Mars will pass through the dust tail of the comet 90 minutes later. Hello, I just made a few QSOs on a recent SO-50 from EK44 between 1749-1802z so while trying to handle the HT FT-60 in one hand and the Arrow antenna in the other hand I let my iPhone do the Voice Memos (Audio Recordings) for the callsings, grid logging purpose, but it turns out that it did only record a very limited time. So I have only CO6CBF and N2PPL in my logs, I know I worked a couple of more a W1 in EL95 and a N9... After being home for a couple of days, I am starting to go through the hundreds of photos, some video clips, and audio recordings I accumulated from my trip to the ARRL Centennial Convention in Hartford (and post-convention road trip to Maine) last weekend. We have no videos or audio recordings from AMSAT's training seminar last Thursday (17 July) or the forums on Friday (18 July) afternoon, due to a Connecticut state law forbidding the audio or video recording of those events. ARRL officials read a statement at the start of each forum when introducing the forum and presenter, with the reference to that state law. Thanks to Peter Portanova W2JV for working the camera during this demonstration, which occurred just after the end of the convention. I have three other videos from the trip. These are not showing satellite operating, but are from either takeoffs or landings at airports. The aviation authorities in the USA now permit the use of small electronic devices that are in "airplane mode" throughout the flight, and the airline I flew on (Southwest Airlines) also permits the use of these devices, so I used my iPod Touch to make these videos. Hi, For a digital bird with a 10 GHz downlink, would it make sense to use DVB-S for the downlink? If you did, I think that most specialised part of a ground station would be an appropriate LNB that will mix 10.0 to 10.5 GHz down to IF. Demodulation could then be performed with ordinary consumer grade DVB-S set top boxes and PC based DVB-S interfaces. Out of the box, a consumer DVB-S STB (Set Top Box) can handle both audio channels and video channels. The DVB-S protocol can also multiplex data (PBBS message forwarding? APRS?) along with multiple audio and video channels on the one carrier. The satellite could have multiple uplinks on multiple bands, eg FM voice uplink(s) on 2m, 9k6 data uplink on 70cm, and video/high speed data on shorter wavelengths. So, with say a 2m mobile rig, and a consumer DVB-S setup (with a 10 GHz LNB) you could QSO via the bird. Hello everyone and greetings from Guatemala, I will try to be more active on the SO-50 passes around Guatemala EK44SL so please look for me, I will try tonight a pass that is around 0530z and tomorrow around 1800z. Current setup is an Arrow VHF/UHF antenna and the Yaesu FT-60 5W handheld, also from my home base an FT-7900 with 50W but with a VHF/UHF vertical antenna (I know is not the ideal antenna but I can try). I know when to get out of it. I have a rather high ceiling in my living room and a tolerant wife. But again, I reiterate, some people actually enjoy the FM birds and it IS a good place for new sat ops to get their feet wet. I'm simply asking for folks to consider that those that operate FM birds might be put off by having it implied that what they chose to do is something to be looked down upon. And for those that do not like the FM birds, I am suggesting that they are the best way to garner new members to AMSAT and therefore the financial and volunteer support needed for future, more technologically advanced sat projects. HAM video Blank Transmission from the ISS was activated again today Tuesday July 22 at 9:55 UTC, which is 11:55 CEST. It will be switched off again on August 6th so make the most of the chance to receive and test equipment. The Ham Video transmitter will stay on in Configuration 4 till August 6: - 2.395GHz - 2.00 MSym/sec This is a high bandwidth digital downlink, so for all those into their digital modes and all those calling for non FM downlinks here you go! The downlink is type DVB-S MPEG2 compression. I'd like to think that anyone who supports amateur satellites would have signed up, but who knows? Maybe I'm the only one that did! (Actually, I know a couple others signed up at the same time I did, but I can't remember who.) I enjoy all satellites, analog and digital, FM or SSB, and operate frequently. Having over 1,000 confirmed grid squares and nearly DXCC should prove that. I also, like Kevin, cut my teeth on RS-12, along with AO-21. Unlike our spacecraft, AMSAT-NA does not exist in a vacuum. AMSAT-UK and -NL has been very successful and now have THREE linear transponders in orbit. They started just a bit ahead of us on their cubesat program, and has it been a thing to behold, and learn from, as we trail a bit behind them. It seems balanced that we also have three launches to look forward to (Fox-1A, RadFXsat, and 1C), and a fourth satellite held as a "just in case" spare. As part of the group that decided from whence we should go after ARISSat, the -UK efforts were certainly part of the equation. Both types of satellites are needed, along with digital ones as well. We chose the path that would allow easy integration with university missions for ELANA subsidized launches, in a size and expense that we thought we could afford to finance and complete in a reasonable amount of time. Balance is important. Keep in mind the overall plan has always been that the -1 sats were to lay the groundwork for bigger and better things. We have a nearly entirely new cadre of engineers building things, and yes, relearning some lessons again, and dealing with new ones, like reduced radiation tolerances from parts so small you lose them if you exhale too hard, and difficult thermal environments. We are on the cusp of seeing all that come to fruition and moving to designing and building Fox-2 satellites. These will be SDR based linear transponders (or whatever we program them to be!, and I hope to find more interesting orbits for them. I fully recognize that in order to reach their full potential, we also need to identify better orbits than where most of the cubesats end up. 600km is fun, but if we want to go higher again, we need to learn to work with launch providers outside of the normal channels, as paying customers. We need to navigate orbital debris rules. We need to find our way upward. The days of launching an AO-7 to 1450km circular with no propulsion and no deorbit mechanism are completely done! Our current partner offers many opportunities for higher orbits, either as deployed spacecraft or on a hosted basis. But! we have to learn to navigate this terrain, and doing so with a 1U on our back is much easier and less risk than something bigger and more complicated. So there is a large part of the thinking and reasoning behind Fox-1C, at least from my point of view. Obviously, I don't represent the BOD. Fox-2 is coming. Be a part of it by joining, building, donating, promoting, operating. It is very sad to confirm this. In fact I was among the very first to note the silence of VO52 and I notified Mani a few days ago. A bird meant for a year and lasting for a decade speaks of ISRO'S brilliance in SAT designs and launches. I would prefer to laud ISRO for this 10 yr gift rather than get sad about this inevitable loss. Once again I thank ISRO for having given me endless joys of going Digital with it and which I could not with other birds. 432 10-13 -Element Antenna?

I'm limited to indoor antennas for all my amateur operations, including satellite operation. Right now, I'm running a 6 element 2 Meter yagi, along with the 7 element 432 beam (part of an arrow antenna). I have room to rotate a larger, and longer 432 antenna, and I'd love to have more gain. Most of the commercial antennas seem to be either small and portable, like the Arrow or much longer intended for weak signal operations. Is anyone aware of something in between, such as a 10 to 13 element antenna available commercially. No time or interest in homebrewing one right now. I will be operating portable from the old Marconi radio site on Cape Cod in grid FN51. I will work SO-50 passes on 7/23/2014 at ~17:32 UTC and on 7/24/2014 at ~17:58 UTC. I will not have my usual portable system, but will operate with a HT and a whip antenna. This may make contacts more difficult, but I hope to catch many of you from FN51. 73, Ron - N8RO

The root of all the problems

- Amateur Radio has many diverse interests. CW, Rag Chew, RTTY, SSTV, Contests, DX, Repeaters, D-Star, EME, Phil's latest digimode ... - These diverse interests can coexist. There are occasional gripes about things that conflict but for the most part it is live and let live. - Amateur Radio satellites are different. Unlike other aspects of Amateur Radio it requires a group to make it happen. - What the majority wants is more important than any individual want. How do you determine what the majority wants. - Voting People will vote one way or another. If people are not given the opportunity to vote they will vote with their feet and walk away if they are not happy. In the absence of voting a small group or individual will get what they want. That may or may not be the best thing for the group. I used to think that voting in AMSAT was necessary. Working a linear satellite pass with very little activity followed by an FM satellite that is packed is perhaps the best indicator of what the group wants. - 'Better than Dead' I am not a fan of LEO FM satellites but it does seem to be what people want and it is something we can do. I saw a crippled old guy wearing a cap that had 'Better than Dead' embroidered on it. When I feel disappointment in what is happening I think of that guy. Is an LEO FM satellite better than no satellite at all - for me it is certainly at least a little bit better than dead. CQ Hawaii

Good evening, Thanks to Shane, NV7SW, in Nevada, I have now worked 49 states on the satellites. All that remains is Hawaii, a significant challenge. AO-7 is the only satellite with a footprint that reaches both the DC area and Hawaii; suitable passes generally occur every other day, with maximum elevations of 1-1.5 degrees on both ends. I can arrange to set up a station that can work AO-7 down to the horizon within the allowable distance from my home QTH under WAS rules, but I need to find someone in Hawaii who can also work AO-7 down to the horizon. I personally am going to ask my local Amateur Radio Club to throw a donation on the Fox 1C project. I challenge you to present the same request along to your own local clubs. I do numerous Radio Merit Badge presentations for the Boy Scouts and one of the things I love to do is to throw in a satellite contact opportunity. Yes linear passes are fun and very capable, but the concept of showing them that this kind of technology is available and doable with just a simple hand held radio and an antenna that you can hold in your hand is much more in the realm of "I could do this too if I had an Amateur Radio license" feeling. Right now, we only one FM bird up there that can be counted on, SO-50, Fox 1A and 1B are still a year off. (Lituanicasat-1 will be decaying within days, and maybe two if the French FM satellite opens up soon). Thus the opportunities for these basic but, Oh for the Scouts, downright exciting communication events is quite limited. The AO-27 contact we did in one of those Radio Merit Badge workshops (Before it died), sealed the deal for a Scout and his dad who were attending and they both ended up getting their tickets. You can wow them with big ticket equipment and complexity (Smoke and mirrors), but fun and excitement will get them hooked. Often times, simple is better. An additional challenge for the HEO, MEO and Linear or nothing folks out there is, instead of buying the next accessory for your already ample station, give a donation to the FOX project (Or other national AMSAT-esque project, FM, Linear or Digital), and let's get the ball rolling on many new opportunities out there just waiting. You donation may help get another Scout/young person hooked on our aspect of the hobby. Tom Schuessler, N5HYP

An exciting afternoon on the birds!!!

Hello to all! It was an exciting afternoon on the birds! First, I worked Patrick, WD9EWK on SO-50 in a new grid for me (FN56). Patrick, thanks very much for the great QSO and new grid! Then, I had my first contact on satellites with France. Michael, F6GLJ in IN94qs and I completed a great QSO on FO-29. We had a maxim elevation of 0.5 degree at our ends. I believe it is the first contact between Cuba and France on FO-29! It is a 7508 Km contact! Our first attempt was on July 18 but Michael was not able to get a solid copy of my signal. Fortunately, FO-29 offered us another opportunity, we made a schedule again and I decided to use the ELK antenna instead of the ARROW which I used in the first attempt. I was operating portable from a tall building (45m over the ground), I had a great horizon visibility. I was running half - duplex with my FT-817nd, a homebrew 50W power amplifier and a homebrew preamplifier. Everything was supplied by a 12V 7A gel battery. The Voss cargo ship arrived at the ISS on July 16. The 5000 kg Voss carried supplies for the ISS, as well as two Nanoracks bags containing a total of 29 3U cubesats: + Techedsat-4 to demonstrate exobrake technology test for NASA-Ames and San Jose State U + 28 Flock-1b imaging satellites for PlanetLabs intended to be deployed from the Kibo airlock over the coming months. AO-7 DX

Through general consensus would it be possible to establish a unofficial "DX watering hole". Time is the essential limiting factor when attempting DX contacts on AO-7, or at times on FO-29. Elevating angles are usually less than 4 degrees. My QTH (near Seattle, Wa. CN87) has a ever so small opportunity to parts of N. Europe. Essentially, use a given frequency (downlink) only when the satellite is less than 4-5 degrees. As I recall there was such a concept on AO-40 (sobsob), it worked quite well. Receiving TigriSat Satellite

Hello all, I am trying to receive TigriSat, First Iraqi satellite which have a FSK Beacon on 435MHz frequency. I use a 2 unit array of cross Yagi antenna and Kenwood TS2000 TRX. The packet sounds quite good on TS2k whereas nothing is decoded on OnlineKISS+ ver 8.2.2 by DK3WN. The COMM port is connected to the serial port of TRX. The internal TNC of TS2000 was set to KISS mode. On air baud rate 9k6 and COMM port baud rate to 9k6 as expected. The COMM port also goes green on the software screen. Have I miss any setting or is anything else required to decode the signals? -- Regards, Rupesh Lad

AO7 demo @ 2025 UTC today

Hi! Depending on weather, QRM/QRN, and AO-7, I hope to be on the AO-7 pass around 2025 UTC this afternoon from outside the ARRL Centennial Convention in Hartford (grid FN31ps). I will use my two FT-817NDs and Elk log periodic antenna, and should have a nice audience listening to wrap up AMSAT's training seminar today. This is an 81-degree pass for Hartford, which should be good for us to deal with the buildings around the convention site. I have been sending out photos and other comments from today's training seminar via Twitter. You can see them on my @WD9EWK Twitter feed, or visit http://twitter.com/WD9EWK using a web browser if you don't use Twitter. We are hoping for more demonstrations during Friday and Saturday. Due to the buildings here in the center of Hartford, we will look to try for higher passes instead of trying to work shallow passes. The signal was strong and clear as it was earlier. I started monitoring at 0408, when the satellite came from behind my apartment building. Sorry about my earlier empty message. I was a touch clumsy with my keyboard and sent it off while I was editing. Too much junk on my desk, hi. I listened to the CW beacon during the pass which finished here roughly half an hour ago. The signal was 48, but was not continuous like, say, the beacon for HO-68. I listened to the end of the transmission at 1843 but didn't copy too much as I was still tuning my radio to hear it.
