All: Trying to make this work on a new install of Windows7, 64 bit. According to the help file, this should work, but every time I start SATPC32, it wants IOPORT.SYS in WINNT/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS. Nova for Windows

To Flip or Not to Flip

To Flip or Not to Flip Ok, my setup has flip capability. It also has azimuth of 1.5 turns (540 degrees), So flip is not essential for end stops as the rotator neither stops at North nor South The rotator controller software only works in WiSPDDE but this can use many different tracking software types. Currently using Orbitron. Orbitron only outputs Elevation 0-90 and Az 0-360 The WiSPDDE rotator driver has been modified to automatically flip if elevation goes above 70 degrees and starts to drop again. As soon as it starts to drop Elevation, Azimuth value has 180 degrees added and Elevation is now suddenly >90 The software has the option to enable or disable flip on each pass. What I need to know is 1) What is the best way to predict if I should flip or instead just move the azimuth without flipping? 2) Is there any software to automatically decide if Flip is best, and output Elevation values >180 to WiSPDDE during the middle of a pass? For Example worst case would be a satellite coming from due west (270) heading east (90). I this case it would be best to flip antenna, otherwise azimuth would need to rotate 180 degrees suddenly during a pass. In another case, ISS coming from south west across to south and then south east, but with elevation approaching 85 degrees. In this case it would be best to not flip, but our current software flips once the box is ticked and if the elevation rises above 70 degrees. At the moment it is not possible to do this in WiSPDDE as it does not know where the ISS is going to be at the end of the pass as that info is not sent over the DDE interface. Specific System Setup The system will be used to track the ISS for 2.4Ghz HAMTV downlink. The beamwidth of dish is 4 to 8 degrees, but signal is very strong at high elevations. Video is used live so continous accurate tracking is needed The azimuth can be any value 0-540 degrees (1.5 turns). Currently the software can do 2 things. 1) Not flip but instead move to an azimuth position where flip is not essential, but sometimes the azimuth is too slow to get to the new position. 2) Flip the dish, but on some passes it would be better to not flip the dish, if say elevation went to 73 elevation but azimuth could cope with tracking. The decision is currently a tick box. Orbitron only outputs 0-90 Elevation so WiSPDDE is not being told by Orbitron to flip, the decision is not based on the pass prediction. I believe some of these problems may be solved with SatPC32 but we would possibly need to modify our custom driver to just accept these values. If using SatPC32 would it solve all these issues? Can it decide to flip or not flip based on azimuth speed and pass prediction in the middle of a pass? Does SatPC32 only ever flip at the start of a pass and never in the middle of a pass? Will it pick the best option for every pass and output values via DDE to WiSPDDE? The rotator WiSPDDE is specifically written for this task, It is a modified version specially modified by Amasat Itallia. The rotator we are using is prosistel Azimuth and Elevation rotator. This is quite new and so a specific driver was written. The azimuth can achieve 1.5 turns (540 degrees) and Elevation 180. The manufacturer only specifies Az 360 and Elev 90 but we have special modified hardware and software to allow movement above normal range. We have been using Orbitron up to now as it allows sun tracking which is handy for dish calibration, In reality the setup may not be used too often for school contacts and we could perform a manual pre-test or simulation to see if flip is best. Another option is to just not use passes for school contacts that require flip or that will result in a signal loss in the middle of a pass. What I would like to happen is the software to calculate which option is best, to flip on the fly or not to flip The decision would be based on the speed of the motors and which mode is fastest to keep a signal locked. For example Time in seconds 1 AZ 260 El 45 Time in seconds 2 Az 90 El 80 Assuming both Elevation and Azimuth can move a 5 degrees per second Difference without Flip Az 170 El 35 Max Time to correct position 34 seconds Difference with Flip AZ 10 El 50 Max time to correct position 10 seconds So is there any program that does this and can output to WiSPDDE? Earlier today, I asked on the LituanicaSAT-1 Facebook group whether or not the satellite's FM transponder could be turned on this weekend for the US/Canada Field Day and this was the reply: "Paul, we'll the situation tomorrow our time and let you know. Need to check telemetry after this night. Because we had some issues with our ground station which are solved now." W1AW/9 operations are going well from EN50 in Central Illinois. There is another pass from FO-29 tonight, and I will also try to listen for SO-50 later. Tomorrow(Friday) there will be no W1AW/9 activity during the morning passes, but W1AW/9 should be on some of the afternoon/evening passes. I'm happy to log duplicate calls on different satellites or the same satellite. FYI - With Field Day coming up, some stations are operating portable. Stations signing simply 'portable' will be logged as K9XYZ/P and stations signing 'portable 8' will be logged as K9XYZ/8. Recordings of FO29 Field Day passband...?

> I have been asked by ICOM to webcast field day this year. Unrelated, but it would be great if someone with a good satcom station recorded the passband of FO29. Not so much to get individual QSO's but to grasp what a full wideband transponder can carry. IE, tune the passband from one end to the other at a constant rate. Then again, and again, and again at the same rate. Maybe separate files for each scan so we can tell when a complete scan begins and ends. This would give those who are unfamiliar with wideband linear transponder operation what the capability really is under FD loading... Just a thought. Bob, Wb4APR

W1AW/9 - IL update

W1AW/9 operations (from IL) are underway. Contacts were made today via SO-50, FO-29, VO-52 , AO-7 and the ISS packet repeater. Tomorrow (Thursday 6/26) I anticipate being on during the morning satellite passes, starting about 11:15 UTC. If SO-50 is on during that pass I will attempt to operate there. (If transponder is quiet, I will switch to VO-52). Immediately following I plan to be on the FO-29 eastern US pass. Then I should be on VO-52 and FO-29 during the following passes (western US) later in the morning. In the afternoon I anticipate being on AO-7 and again on VO-52 and FO-29 in the late afternoon/evening. I will be available for most ISS passes for keyboard QSO's. I will be sending CQ de W1AW/9. In order to have a valid QSO, I need to be sure a human is at the other keyboard, responding to me. I cannot verify QSO's consisting of only APRS information, or automated Signals Heard reports. If you are using UISS put my call in the TX APRS box with a greeting message and I will confirm. I have logged only one ISS contact so far, with KA1OLE. I'm looking for more! Feel free to call for repeat QSO's on the same or different satellites. The more contacts the better! I'm mainly operating phone, but can switch to CW as needed. I have been asked by ICOM to webcast field day this year. We have scheduled 3 locations that will be webcast. 1. Memphis, 2. Olive Branch field day, and 3. Northeast Mississippi gang in Fulton, Ms. My schedule would be Memphis on Saturday morning, Olive branch on Sunday morning, and Fulton, MS on Sunday afternoon. Because of travel times, I will probably have only a couple hours at each of the MS locations but should have much more time for Memphis. I need your help. Can you find me someone that can speak about field day at Memphis and that person will be interviewed. Also are there specific stations in the Memphis field day you want to show more or highlight? Field Day 2014

Thanks to all who responded to my query about tracking software. I have another question. I've been ignoring the reflector for a while, and I've lost track of the satellites that are currently usable for voice/cw contacts. After some research, I have the following in my list: AO7, FO29, SO50, VO52, AO73, LO78. Am I missing any? Are the above birds (especially the newer ones) actually available? > Unfortunately, a while back, Yahoo changed how multiple messages about the same subject (even to different reflectors - those are "bundled" into a single message) are handled and, when a reply to any of those messages is sent, all of the attached messages cannot be deleted! At least I have not found a way! Try switching to "plain text" for that reply, and then switch back to 'rich text'. You can delete the unnecessary text. In the compose window in my browser, it's a couple up arrows in the gobbledygook next to the send button. Mouse over it and it will say 'Switch to plain text'. Fodtrack Serial rotor controller on HamLib

Hi folks, So all this talk about Gpredict got me to look at updating my own setup, which pre-dated the modern Gpredict capabilites. But being so archaic, I need some help connecting the dots... I have Gpredict / Hamlib talking to my Yaesu FT-736R radio for Doppler tracking just fine, but the rotor is a problem. My controller is home-brewed, and emulates the subset of the "Yaesu serial protocol" as output from the original DOS version of FODTrack. The syntax is the letter "W" followed by the Azimuth, a space, the Elevation, and terminated with a carriage return (hex 0d). Both the Az and El are whole decimal integers. When I moved to Linux and Predict (the ncurses version) in 2002, I modified the software to copy that same syntax, and all was fine. Tab forward over a decade to my question: What model "Yaesu controller" was FODTrack thinking it was talking to? I need to find an equivalent model for Hamlib's rotctl daemon, and none of the choices seem to match. They all seem to want to talk to a single rotor (Az or El, not both). Is there an equivalent model, Yaesu or otherwise, that accepts "Waaa eee\n" for Az + El positioning? Thanks, Greg KO6TH

Getting ready for Field Day, I tried to fire up good, old, reliable Predict on my nice new laptop with Windows 8.1 with 64 bit processing. I was sad to see a message saying it wouldn't run because it's a 32 bit program. I've previously had Satscape, at least until Win7. So, what freeware software can I look at set up and install quickly, and without a steep learning curve? Oh, and please! No rants about Windows and how I should switch to Linux. Not gonna happen. CAT control for TX and RX

I'm preparing for Field day and would like to use a combination of HDSDR (RX) and a Kenwood TS-2K (TX) radio. The RTL-SDR dongle and preamp make a great RX. Ham Radio Deluxe only connects to a single radio. (Transceiver) Is there a way to control both radios at once to correct for Doppler? The problem would be similar to controlling two FT-817s, except both radios would be different in my case. Thanks and 73's Stu2 W7IY

The other day I was using my Yeasue el/az rotator just fine in flip mode with sat-pc and PST-rotator. Today trouble. In Pst-rotator If I ask for 90 the position bar showed actual 120 and it continues to show about 30 degrees off all the way to 359 where it will stop 30 degrees in advance of where it should since it thinks it is there. Is this one of those problems that happens when the wire breaks on the resister or perhaps something else? It has been loyal for many years. Is it time to send it back for repair? Any help would be good. TNC Question

A friend has loaned me a Kantronics KPC-3+ TNC with v9.1 firmware. I've been searching for settings specific to this unit for ARISS work. Most of what I found are generic settings (some info is conflicting). It's not that difficult. I'm going to CC the 'bb on this so anybody else facing the same problem can use this. Also, they should be almost drop-in compatible, but I ran all of this on a Linux Mint install, not Ubuntu. Mint (IMHO) is a little more friendlier than Ubuntu, but is a direct fork of Ubuntu so you shouldn't have any compatibility issues. First, install git and some dependencies. This assumes GPredict is already installed. *sudo apt-get install git libglib2.0-dev libtool intltool libcurl4-gnutls-dev libgoocanvas-dev* Then you'll want to grab the code. *git clone git://git.code.sf.net/p/gpredict/code <http://git.code.sf.net/p/gpredict/code> gpredict-code* This will create a new directory (probably gpredict-code); you'll want to move into that directory. *cd gpredict-code * Next, run the autogen script. This prepares the code for installation. *./autogen.sh* Assuming that runs all the way through without exiting for errors, run *./configure* then *make* and finally *sudo make install* Assuming everything goes according to plan, you should be able to launch the program by running */usr/local/bin/gpredict* Make sure it's the correct version by going to Help > About GPredict. "GPREDICT 1.3.242-b445" is the text you're looking for. Finally, let's replace the out-of-date binary with this one. This probably isn't the best way to do it, but it works. *sudo mv /usr/local/bin/gpredict /usr/bin/* That should do it for updating it to the latest version. Hi Guys, DTUsat-2 is now operational on orbit and transmitting both CW beacons and AX25 frames at 1200bps 2FSK. Beacons are alternating at 30sec intervals. Any help you could offer in tracking and recording beacons would be much appreciated at this early stage in the mission. Please find attached a short technical note on how to decode CW beacons. Are you talking about the TAPR/JAMSAT TrakBox? I bought a nice one a couple years ago for about $200 USD shipped from Canada. I found a turbo kit available from someone here on AMSAT to speed up the CPU and installed it. The turbo kit if still available is a bargain, new CPU, Y2K firmware, a faster crystal and another faster chip. Apart from soldering the crystal, there is not much to do but follow instructions. I also plan to install a back-lighted LCD display to be easy on my eyes. They work pretty well. The only drawback is the RS232 interface for the KEPS. I am going to try and add an Ethernet to RS232 adapter so I can use a browser to upload the KEPS. What I like is that it has real time tracking, _doppler __correction _and autonomous operation in one package. I don't think there is anything on the market that has everything these have. Assuming the lithium battery has not leaked and the kit is well constructed, you should be able to recoup your investment. They are no longer available. I'm new to using Ubuntu-Linux. I finally with a lot of outside counciling got FlDigi to run using either Hamlib or Flrig to handle CAT on my FT-847. I thought I was home free until I found that Gpredict would not control CAT on the radio. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help? Linux is my only resource on this old XP P3 computer. XE1SEW/P DL90 & Operating FO-29 Portable

On the last pass of SO-50 (15:27 UTC, 20-Jun) over North America, I worked XE1SEW operating portable in DL90. Last night he was calling CQ on FO-29 from EL00. I do not believe he made any successful contacts due in part to many stations calling CQ within 3 kHz of him. There may have been other factors. Having operated many times portable, I can assure you that neighboring stations on adjacent frequencies can pose challenges. I am not laying blame but rather making an observation. Please, consider moving away from FO-29's passband center if you intend to operate portable. As a general rule on FO-29 I try to transmit portable below 145.93 and above 145.97. As a portable station this provides some shielding from the "death zone" of higher power, fixed stations who always seem to appear and call CQ +/- 10 kHz of the transponder's center frequency. Did not identify each one at the time but now that I know that they are active will follow up and clarify hopefully more accurately. W1AW/9 will be active from Illinois beginning June 25 and continuing through July 1. All operations will be from the EN50 grid square. Exchanging a signal report is all that is needed for a valid QSO, so there is no need to struggle with a grid square report if conditions become difficult. I will plan to be active on AO-7, FO-29, and VO-52. SO-50 operations may be attempted as time allows. Recently the ISS packet BBS has been active and I will plan to operate ISS packet (keyboard QSOs) if the repeater is turned on during the time period allotted. Afternoon and evening passes will be emphasized, with some morning activity when practical here. Activity will be minimal during Field Day hours, since satellite resources will be needed by FD stations. QSLs will be handled through the ARRL. If you need a contact during a particular time period, I will try to be on the air as needed. I made some headway today with FlDigi but need advice regarding a substitute for SatPC32 that will run under Ubuntu and handle CAT control,of my FT-847. Portable From FN21 - Need Preamp

I'll be working portable from FN21 in NE PA Poconos for most of the summer using my FT-847 and eggbeaters. Finally got things set up today and worked quite a few stations on AO-7 & FO-29. SO-50 was the usual mess hi hi. Haven't yet tried LO-78. I've learned that I could really use a 2 meter mast mount preamp for 2 meters. I have one for 70cm so if anyone has one they are thinking of selling let me know. I need one that can be remotely powered through the coax by the 847. I am trying to use LVB tracker and SatPC32 under Windows 7/64 and every thing works fine until I start tracking a satellite and after a few minutes I get an OLE error 800A1F55 and the Server SDX program freezes up? Dear Keith, I have a Kenwood TS2000 and currently working on using its internal TNC for digital AX.25 packet communication. I didn't had any success yet in digital communication. I use Kenwood ARCP 2000 to configure and send commands for internal TNC. It is very similar to using Hyper terminal, it gives the terminal window as soon as you turn on Packet Operation of TS2000. I have also done uplink and downlink of APRS packet using ISS digipeater. For this I set the internal TNC to KISS mode and used AGWPE along with UISS software. Regards, Rupesh

This is the week for W1AW portable from Minnesota. There will be two of us, N0TOR and NR0T, working the birds as W1AW/0. I just started the week off by working W4VAS and AA5PK on AO-7 Mode B. Signals were good and no FM'ing. Both of us work M-F 8am to 5pm so there is not likely to be much opportunity to operate during the work day. Thant is great info. K4AMG will be GOTA station at the W4CAR FD. Since we have SSB CW we will not operate SO 50 because of the congestion. We tried FD last year but had to many program and other failures with an old HR Deluxe. Hope to work you all from Deep Creek Lock Park on the Waterway in Chesapeake, VA FM 16.
