FUNcube-1 Project Update

Hi All, Our software team is working feverishly to complete the FUNcube Dashboard software that we will be using to decode and display the telemetry that will be transmitted from the spacecraft on 145.935 MHz. Whilst they finish their work here are some provisional pre-launch keps. We may well receive an updated set nearer to the day of launch but we expect that these should be good enough for the first few hours/days after launch. Satellite: FUNCUBE-1 Catalog number: 99991 Epoch time: 13325.309563080 Element set: 1 Inclination: 97.7956 deg RA of node: 38.2570 deg Eccentricity: 0.0059925 Arg of perigee: 198.5190 deg Mean anomaly: 336.5388 deg Mean motion: 14.77841394 rev/day Decay rate: 0.00000106 Epoch rev: 1 The particular method of deployment used by this Dnepr launch vehicle means that the dispersion of all the objects may be somewhat more rapid than we are commonly used to, so this may help the experts determine which object is which. FUNcube-1 will initially be transmitting only about 30 mW of output power, this is its "Safe Mode", so a steerable yagi will greatly help reception. When the spacecraft is eventually transmitting data in its normal "Educational Mode" the signal is expected to be about 10dB louder. I occasionally have passes where I can copy myself when the footprint of either FO-29 or A-07 shows some coverage to extreme North East Australia and the North Island of New Zealand, but I've never heard any signals from there. AO27 status

Heard AO27 a couple of times. Both yesterday and today. Today I heard it around 18:10 UTC. The telemetry was good and strong. Hopefully they can get this old girl working again as well. It was a nice FM satellite after the demise of AO51. Reid, W4UPD

Paul: I didn't realize that it's downlink was only 250mw. No wonder. I don't think AO-51 had a constant carrier. But it seemed that way sometimes. And, it frequently got my receiver to full quieting, while SO-50 almost never does that. One reason why I was asking is that I have been working up to getting back on the FM birds via a handheld. I have a place in the mountains in DN60, and I suspect that's much more rare than my home QTH grid (DM 79). I was thinking of operating handheld from there, and activating it. Thanks for your answer. SO-50

Dear Folks: Is it just me or is SO-50 not quite as easy a bird to work as AO-27 or AO-51 were? I actually prefer working the SSB/CW birds, so I don't have as much experience on the FM sats. That's why I'm asking. Even though I'm able to make a few contacts on SO-50 every pass I am on, it seems like everyone has a harder time getting in. It seems there are few times that people seem to get into the bird full quieting, even without other stations competing for access. Just curious. Thanks and 73 de Bernie, KF0QS

The ARTSAT2 Deep Space sculpture "DESPATCH" is planned to launch in mid 2014 on a H-IIA rocket with the asteroid explorer Hayabusa 2 as the main payload. Hayabusa 2 will be making a round-trip to the C-type asteroid 1999 JU3 arriving at the asteroid in mid 2018. The sculpture, which is 50 by 50 by 45 cm with a mass of 30 kg, was developed at the Tama Art University using a 3D Printer. The containment vessel will carry a CW beacon in the 435 MHz band using an omni-directional antenna. The satellite should provide the ultimate in ham radio DX reception when at its maximum operational distance of 3 million km from Earth about a week after launch. Being battery powered without solar panels it will have a low transmit cycle to maximize the life span. RF, another alternate energy technology (hogwash)

A fellow came to me convinced that capturing RF energy from cell phones, and radio and TV waves was free energy. He couldn’t wait to invest in these pocket sized antennas that have achieved the same 37% energy reception efficiencies as do the most expensive solar cells:. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/11/131107154818.htm I told him to not believe everthing he hears and you Amsat radio guys might get a kick out of my response: -------------------------------------- Thanks for sending me this interesting example of hype gone ridiculous. I was glad to receive it. The problem is apples and oranges. Yes, they got ”37% efficiency, similar to the most expensive solar cells”, but the difference is that solar energy imparts about 100 watts of energy per square foot on a solar panel – remember, ONE HUNDRED WATTS/sqft. The amount of energy from a Cell tower onto a small antenna 1 mile away from the cell tower (typical) is only 0.000000000004 Watts. So there is about a one hundred trillionth of the practicality. Or another way to look at it. If you could hold their RF energy collecting antenna 1 inch from the cell phone tower (not one mile), to get more power, then the most power he could get would be only 3 watts. Still nothing close to what the sun provides. Plus, he would be absorbing all the power from the cell phone tower making it useless, plus the energy is not free. SO to get the same power as a palm sized solar panel, his RF capture antenna would have to be ONE INCH away from THIRTY cell phone towers. And, to generate that same 100 watts worth of RF energy, it takes about 300 watts of electrical power. (1 inch away) All to deliver about 1 Watt of power compared to the Sun which is free. Thanks. 2013 AMSAT Symposium in Houston - My Observations

1. It was great to see so many operators in attendance. I lost count of the total but here are just a few of the more frequent North American stations heard on the birds: N5AFV, N5ZNL, AC0RA, CO6CBF/KF5YXV, KO4MA, WD9EWK K5OE/M0GOE, WA5KBH, KF5LOQ, N8RO, N0JE 2. There were lots of great presentations. I stayed awake for most! 3. The forecast for future transponder-capable satellites (FM & SSB) looks bright. 4. The banquet panel was outstanding and very well received by all. 5. Houston knows how to put on a fun Symposium. Kudos to the host committee! 6. I was pleased to see some of the developments around licensing Cubesats in terms of experimental versus amateur licensing. 7. We had an eclectic collection of amateurs in attendance – all with their own unique perspectives in building and/or operating satellites. You could likely never assemble such a team outside of the AMSAT Symposium venue. 8. There are many kind and generous individuals within AMSAT-NA who were supportive of one of our foreign visitors and in making his journey special. 9. Only a few people fell asleep during my presentation. None snored. 10. Even Texas BBQ from Papa’s is better than Memphis B-B-Q. Some amateurs in the midwest may be interested in this news posted by Bill, WB8ELK on the Balloon_Sked list: Spaceport Indiana balloon launch around 11 am to noon EST Sunday, November 10 from downtown Indianapolis at the IUPUI campus carrying a student experiment. Landing zone is a few miles northeast of Cincinnati about 10 miles west of Blanchester. One of the payloads includes SSTV on 144.310 MHz in Scottie 2 format. Good Evening This Saturday the 9th of November I will be operating the the ARRL midwest convention as W1AW/0. The ops will take place from 8am to 5pm central time. I am going to try as many passes as I can but the pass times just aren't the best to get on more then a few passes. The morning FO-29 and SO-50 passes are the best chances to work W1AW/0. Yes, I agree, club meetings are one of the best aspects of ham radio, AMSAT, etc. But the draw needs to be the meeting and what is shared at the meetings. I am looking for a few regular meetings locally where I can share my actions/activities with others. Known as Phoenix, the goal of the program is to develop a maneuverable spacecraft equipped with a dexterous robotic arm to salvage useful components from retired communications satellites. Some have likened the project to performing on-orbit surgery. David Barnhart, program manager of DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office, said the agency is looking for satellites of all sizes that are in a low-inclination orbits and that are not spinning too fast. Spam through amsat.org

A significant fraction of the spam I get on my primary email account comes by way of the amsat.org email reflector; by my count, 18 of the 76 spam emails I've received in the last day. But I don't want to just shut it off; sometimes people I do want to hear from make contact that way. And I've used it to contact others whose email addresses I don't know, but who I know to be AMSAT members. I wonder if it would be possible to set up some sort of auto-responder on amsat.org so that instead of just forwarding email, returns a message to the sender with a non-machine-readable image of the user's actual email address, possibly accompanied with a sound file with the same information for anyone with impaired vision. Spammers couldn't handle it, especially since most don't even use valid return addresses. But any real human could resend his email directly to its destination. What do people think of this idea? How much of a problem is spam for everyone else here? Phil

Email is the most insecure way of transferring information, and the exploits are easy, because the "details" are always hidden from you. Use the functions in your email program to show all the headers. In the case of MICHAEL's email, it has a header line: Received-From: from michaelPC ([72.240.150.93]) by BLU0-SMTP162.phx.gbl over TLS secured channel with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.4675); Thu, 31 Oct 2013 15:20:58 -0700 which tells you where the SMTP client connected from. This is the ultimate source information, for all non-exploited or non-compromised email servers. There will be one of these lines for every server that touched the email. People can "craft" an email that looks like it came from someone who did not send it. If you don't look at these header lines, you'll only have the visible 'From' and 'To' information that your email client shows you, which can be easily forged since it is just text that your email client crafts and sends to the server. Legitimate ISPs don't accept email with a 'From' address that is not, precisely the 'id' of the user connecting and authenticating to the SMTP server. So, it can be possible for you to receive an email that appears to be from this list, but which is actually, completely NOT from this list, but SPAM crafted by a SPAM bot, and sent to you, because your email address was somehow revealed to it. I might only see about one a week that makes it onto the bulletin board. I have an amsat.org alias, like we all have, but I never use it as a reply-to address. If someone knows my call, they can tack on amsat.org and send me an email. Mindspring/Earthlink my provider, is very pro-active in stopping spam and viruses. I've never had to setup a kill-filter on my client. I have a yahoo email account, just to have for yahoo groups. Never ever used it and it always gets spam in it. KB7ADL

Same here. I stopped using my amsat.org address about a decade ago because it was so badly spammed. It is still a valid address but it forwards to a separate address on my mail server. I check it every few days. These days, most of the spam is in Chinese. Mark Spencer's AMSAT Journal Articles

Through his work on the educational aspects of the Fox satellites, Mark Spencer has produced some great experiments and materials. The Fox-1 attitude determination experiment, and now the Fox-2 MPPT system have both been presented in the AMSAT Journal. If you aren't a member of AMSAT you are missing some great stuff in the Journal. But in this research and work for the Fox-2 MPPT system I believe that Mark may have inadvertently answered an age old question that has (to my knowledge) never been definitively been answered before. A question as old as the icebox itself. In the MPPT article figure 3, Mark presents a measure of voltage and power in three environments: a room (presumably in his home), the refrigerator compartment of his refrigerator, and the freezer compartment of his refrigerator. The measured power is higher in the refrigerator and even higher in the freezer. EUREKA! I believe that Mark has finally proven that the light in the refrigerator (or freezer) STAYS ON WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED! Otherwise, how could there have been any power output in the refrigerator or freezer at all? A solar panel requires light to work. Thank you, Mark! I can now share with my mother (poor Pop isn't around to enjoy this discovery although he first posed the question to me 50+ years ago) that I KNOW. SatPC32 SuM and ServerSDX language priblem

I recently updated SatPC32 from 12.8b to 12.8c. I backed up my old data, removed SatPC32 and installed the newer version then restored my backup data. Everything is working and SatPC32 itself is using English language. However any error with comms (ServerSDX) returns an error message in German and SuM is also using German. Unfortunately the only German words I know are not very polite so can someone tell me how to change the language of SuM and ServerSDX back to English. I suspect I will also find some other parts of the package that are in German too. Thanks from Dick G4BBH.

Office Closed

The AMSAT Office is closed. FridayI fell and tore my achilles heel.. I am in a fiberglass cast for 2 weeks and then a plaster cast for four weeks. I cannot put any weight on my left leg. I do have a wheel chair so I hope my husband (N4QQ) will take me to the office until I can manage on my own. -- 73- Martha

FUNCube Data Warehouse Ready for Demo

Hi, AMSAT-UK & AMSAT-NL are pleased to announce a new version of the FUNcube Data Warehouse which will collect, collate, deduplicate and display data from FUNcube Dashboards running on user PCs (see section at end). The URL is:https://warehouse.funcube.org.uk The intention of the warehouse is to allow access to all the data received for the duration of the mission rather than from just one or a series of passes. This will enable educators and others to download mission telemetry for off-line analysis as part of our STEM outreach goal. The warehouse will store information for the following satellites/devices: - FUNcube Flight Model - UKube-1 - FUNcube module - FUNcube Engineering Model (which will be used for some demonstrations) - FUNcube Software Test Stack (which is still be used for development but may become another demonstration model later) Please note, that we are still adding functionality and that some features may not be enabled but it will give a flavour of what will be there. The warehouse DOES allow registration for upload of data from the FUNcube Dashboard (see below) and we would like feedback on the process. You can register now as a user of the Warehouse and then, later, apply the settings, that you will be emailed to you, to the Dashboard software when it is available. There is a new forum at:http://forum.funcube.org.uk, whose purpose is to provide support for FUNcube satellite users. Registration on this forum is separate from the warehouse registration. FUNcube Dashboard A Windows PC application has been developed which will allow FUNcube Dongle (either model) users and those with other, SSB compatible, 2 metre radios to receive and display satellite telemetry in real time and upload the data to the FUNcube Data Warehouse. If using the FUNcube Dongle, the software will perform doppler tracking on the received signal. As well as real-time processing, the software can replay binary, IQ and sound files captured on earlier passes. The Dashboard software is undergoing final testing and will be made available in about two weeks time. We are looking forward to a late November launch. "Peter, G4DOL (IO80so) and I (EL92sd) completed a contact successfully on FO-29. It is the result of a long history which began six months ago. "We tried several times but Peter never could hear below a degree toward my location. I have the same problem in my home station and I usually go to specific spots to try these kinds of contacts. So, I suggested him assemble a portable station to operate from a better spot. He did so and his first smoke test was on October 15th, we almost completed a contact but Peter could not hear my report; I couldn't reach a good spot due to the rain. Yesterday, I went to a very tall building, I got access to the building `s top and operated from there. Actually, it is a very good spot, it allowed me a great horizon visibility toward Europe; I was able to work FO-29 until -1.5 degrees. "We had a very narrow window but there was enough time to exchange reports, grids and greetings. Our maximum elevation was 1.1 degrees. I believe it is the first contact between UK and Cuba on FO-29! It is a 7286 km contact, a new grid and new country for us! "Please, note that our success was on the 2301z pass, it was very late in the night for Peter. He had to load his car with antennas, radio, a battery and drive five miles from his home looking for a good spot in the windy and dark coast. He was running 50W into a 10 elements yagi and was using 19 elements yagi for the downlink; He mounted both antennas on a big tripod and had to manage with a "heavy weigh". Needless to say that Peter did the difficult part and a very good job! "I was running a FT-817nd, a 50W homebrew power amplifier and ELK antenna. Everything was supplied by a 12V 7A Gel battery. I was operating Half-Duplex but we ran the frequency calculations based on the great feature implemented on SatPC32 V12.8b. So, it was very easy to find each other in the pass band. It was my 8th transatlantic contact with Europe on FO-29! "Right Now, FO-29 has a big footprint. Please, if you are into the footprint and want to try a long distance contact, just drop me an email. I will try until complete a contact with you. Unfortunately, Cubans cannot operate on AO-7B; FO-29 is our only chance for DX contacts. "Thanks very much to Peter for this exciting contact!" There is a new allocation for the Amateur-Satellite Service from 144.000-144.025 MHz There is also a reference to NSS – Near Space Stations in the definitions section. This is believed to be the first mention of High Altitude Balloons in any amateur radio band plan document. It says NSS – Near Space Stations: Equipment located in temporary Near Space Stations (such as those carried by High Altitude Balloons) can transmit carefully on any frequency; exceptions are the segments with “exclusive” usage where “NSS” are not applied. NSS must follow the BW and mode restrictions of the segment and observe carefully the usual occupation of the band on the related region to avoid harmful interference. For longer missions and NSS crossing international and regional boundaries, extra care must be observed in harmonization of different allocations. A special highlight of this year's Symposium is the celebration of the 30th anniversary of amateur radio involvement in human space flight and the evolution of amateur radio into a successful program on board the International Space Station. ARISS (Amateur Radio on the ISS) is an international program that supports educational outreach as well as provides an opportunity for informal contacts between astronauts/cosmonauts and amateur radio operators around the world. The recent delivery of "Ham TV" equipment to the Columbus module by the European Space Agency is a reflection of the continued support that amateur radio holds for communicating with students. Astronaut Owen Garriott, W5LFL on STS-9 in November 1983 was the first astronaut to utilize amateur radio to communicate with personnel on the ground, allowing the general public to speak with US astronauts from space, outside the communication channels of NASA's Mission Control. In recognition of the 30th anniversary of this historic event, a multi-media panel featuring Owen and other key individuals who initiated this amazing program will take place on Saturday evening as part of the banquet, moderated by AMSAT VP-Human Space Flight Frank Bauer, KA3HDO. The presentation includes not only remarks by Owen and others in response to Frank's questions, but video highlights of amateur radio participation in STS-9 and other Shuttle flights will be shown. It is currently opened to the public while undergoing extensive restoration to ready her for the 100th anniversary of her commissioning in 2014. A special tour has been arranged for AMSAT Symposium participants. The tour will be conducted in small groups by experienced docents and will include areas of the ship included on general public tours, as well as areas not generally open to the public. The tour will also feature special emphasis on the radio room and if restoration activity permits, the transmitter room which contains the original transmitter equipment and has never been open to the public. Transportation will be by organized carpool provided by a combination of those participants with rental cars, and local hams from the Clear Lake Amateur Radio Club (CLARC) and the Johnson Space Center Amateur Radio Club (JSCARC). This is a bit outside of the realm of traditional amateur satellite launches but I found it to be very interesting nonetheless. Some fans of a popular scifi show have raised the money to launch a replica of the show's time-and-space traveling ship into orbit this fall. From what I know of it so far, it will but a fully functioning sat within a very unusual chassis and will feature a GoPro camera mounted inside with the intention to transmit photos back to earth. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding any real technical information on this "blue bird" but maybe someone here knows more about it? All I could find was a very brief spec sheet. Maybe everyone needs to hold a good ol' fashioned fund-raiser, with people going door-to-door, asking for donations. Start this on January 1, 2014, and end it on December 31. Calculate all the earnings, and bring it to whoever can get the project underway, and launched. We could probably litter LEO, MEO, and HEO with FM birds, or whatever flavors we like. At the very least, we need replacements for AO-51 and HO-68.

Hi Bill, I believe folks actually see the value and yes appreciate it. The point is "communication". The more information is shared the better and the more questions raised the better. Ham Radio on National TV

Almost fell out off the couch. I was watching TV and there was a national commercial that featured Ham Radio. This is not some cheesy local affiliate news filler or a two-bit webcast but an actual professionally produced commercial that features Ham Radio broadcast on national TV. FUNcube-1 launch site news

Hi All, FUNcube-1 is presently at Yasny and is being prepared for launch. All the latest news can be seen at www.funcube.org.uk and the latest post includes a link to the launch blog from our launch service providers. We are still on track for a launch late next month and we are planning to release the FUNcube Dashboard software around November 7th. This should give everyone time to set it up and test its functionality in their systems. The Dashboard is capable of uploading received telemetry to a central warehouse over the internet. This can then be “viewed” live by everyone else. The present iteration of the Dashboard software is designed for all Windows machines (XP or later) 73 Graham G3VZV

Satellite contact between Cuba and UK

Hello to all I am pleased to report that yesterday I had my first contact on satellites with UK. Peter, G4DOL (IO80so) and I (EL92sd) completed a contact successfully on FO-29. It is the result of a long history which began six months ago. We tried several times but Peter never could hear below a degree toward my location. I have the same problem in my home station and I usually go to specific spots to try these kinds of contacts. So, I suggested him assemble a portable station to operate from a better spot. He did so and his first smoke test was on October 15th, we almost completed a contact but Peter could not hear my report; I couldn't reach a good spot due to the rain. Yesterday, I went to a very tall building, I got access to the building `s top and operated from there. Actually, it is a very good spot, it allowed me a great horizon visibility toward Europe; I was able to work FO-29 until -1.5 degrees. We had a very narrow window but there was enough time to exchange reports, grids and greetings. Our maximum elevation was 1.1 degrees. I believe it is the first contact between UK and Cuba on FO-29! It is a 7286 km contact, a new grid and new country for us! Please, note that our success was on the 2301z pass, it was very late in the night for Peter. He had to load his car with antennas, radio, a battery and drive five miles from his home looking for a good spot in the windy and dark coast. He was running 50W into a 10 elements yagi and was using 19 elements yagi for the downlink; He mounted both antennas on a big tripod and had to manage with a "heavy weigh". Needless to say that Peter did the difficult part and a very good job! I was running a FT-817nd, a 50W homebrew power amplifier and ELK antenna. Everything was supplied by a 12V 7A Gel battery. I was operating Half-Duplex but we ran the frequency calculations based on the great feature implemented on SatPC32 V12.8b. So, it was very easy to find each other in the pass band. It was my 8th transatlantic contact with Europe on FO-29! Right Now, FO-29 has a big footprint. Please, if you are into the footprint and want to try a long distance contact, just drop me an email. I will try until complete a contact with you. Unfortunately, Cubans cannot operate on AO-7B; FO-29 is our only chance for DX contacts. Thanks very much to Peter for this exciting contact! 73! Yaesu G-5400B Rotor Update

Update on the Yaesu G-5400B rotor. It turned out that only the rotor controller and cable was available. It appears that the rotor itself may have gone with the tower whenever it was disassembled during removal. It's from an estate sale, so hard to be sure. Any value to the rotor controller? Surface area counts ten for lightning protection. Down conductor braid , copper pipe or strap 2-3" wide has the most conductivity. Coiling Coax in a 3" diameter at the base of the tower and placing a separate ground strap on the coax before the coil to strip off the lightning currents will off some degree of protection.
