iOS 7 is ham friendly

I found it rather by accident today. I have played with all the neat features of iOS 7 but stumbled upon this one in an unusual place. Tap on your favorites in the phone book. Tap on the (I) for information about your favorite and tap Edit, tap on Vibration. Scroll down to the bottom and under 'Custom', tap 'Create New Vibration'. It now allows you to tap the screen for dits and dahs and have your custom morse code vibrate when in silent mode. I could not find any way to make a custom vibration in Settings/Sounds. Go figure. Pretty neat and ham friendly. OOPS... Corrected... ----------------------- When the Earth image is about 4" across (8,000km), and the satellites are one pixel across (say .001") then each dot is actually to scale a spacecraft that is 2km wide. Which is about 4000 times bigger in diameter than a real spacecraft. So what you are seeing is what space would look like if every one of our satellies was the size of a EARTH-KILLER asteroid. Actually the impact concern is the AREA so in effect, the 4000 times smaller spacecraft are actually 16,000,000 times smaller in cross section than the dot on the image. (unless I made another stupid math error). I understand that the AmSat BB is 99% serious business. I think it's time to lighten the mood a bit. I'm going to (try to) fund a new project. I want to place a satellite with a full-sized 160m beam into orbit. I want this thing to be "highly polished" or plated in Chrome. (It will put the Russian "space mirror" to shame), and be visible during daylight hours. I think the flares will catch the interest of people, and draw them into this insane hobby. How's that for a dumb idea? (I'll shut up now...)

DC and AMSAT Awards

Good morning, I was curious about the rules for the the OSCAR Satellite Communications Achievement Award, the OSCAR Sexagesimal Award, and the OSCAR Century Award. The rules from KK5DO's website state that "A contact is defined as one with a station in another state, DXCC country or Canadian Provience. Once you have a contact with a station in that area, you must hunt for another." Furthermore, the rules also state that "For those that have the RAC CANDADAWARD or ARRL WAS with satellite endorsements, you may submit a copy of your certificate as proof of working the 13 Canadian Proviences or 50 U.S. States." Since Canada only has ten provinces, that implies that the three territories also count under the definition of "province." Similarly, I would argue that the definition of "state" should also include the District of Columbia as a separate entity since the precedent from counting the Canadian territories as "provinces" is clear. I don't know much about colliding dots but .. The volume of space from surface of earth up to about 200 km is roughly 1 to the 20th (cubic meters). The volume of a spherical spacecraft with a diameter of 5 meters (slightly larger than a cubesat) is about 500 (cubic meters). Assuming 10,000 of these spacecraft orbiting earth (a bit of an overestimate) we have a total volume of 5 times 10 to the 6th (cubic meters). At any instant the chance of randomly introducing a new object into an occupied position is on the order of 1/2 times 10 to the -13th power. Of course I have omitted a few important details (and I haven't checked my arithmetic) but since this is about 10 to the 7th less than the odds of being hit by lightening if one lives to be 100 I wouldn't worry about it too much (however, I would take reasonable precautions with lightening). For the longest time I have been wondering how a satellite is placed in orbit without hitting anything else? I have seen pictures of all the stuff circling the Earth and it just baffles me how anyone can get anything in orbit without hitting anything. Can anyone explain this? Mike/N8GBU

Very interesting stuff. Thanks to everyone who responded. Using a model rocket engine has occurred to me :-) I noticed that the smaller ones (A,B) tend to peak at 10s of Newtons (presumably to get the model rocket going fast enough to be stable after it leaves the launch rod) and then settles down to sub-10 Newtons for the rest of the burn (a second or two). So it is quite a whack over a short period for a small bird. I did not look up the higher power size. It would be interesting and not too difficult to do the math to see what kind of a perigee raise would happen if someone fired one of these on a 3U cubesat of modest mass in GTO while it was at apogee. Don, there is enough interesting stuff to keep me watching the list. There is also a lot of complaining. We'd love to have you rejoin AMSAT. Fox-1, the upcoming launch, IS an FM bird, but I hope you noticed that the last AMSAT bird, ARRISat-1 was indeed a linear. We need to continue to learn and experiment. SatPC32 Registration

I need some advice on how to solve this. I downloaded and installed SatPC32 V.12.8b a few weeks ago and got it up and working as it should.It is a cool program. I also ordered the Registration on paypal last week , but have yet to receive the registration information email. I sent an email and called the 1-888 number and so far no response. The problem is that the government is no longer paying for those expenses as they did in the past. Kick motors on Oscars: How does attitude control work?

There has been a lot of discussion about AO-10, 13, and 40 (and maybe others) with various kinds of apogee kick motors (and inclination changers etc). Rather than fanning any flames, I just want to ask a question: If you have a motor of a few hundred Newtons, how to you keep the attitude stable during the burn? For that matter, how do you get the attitude correct for the start of the burn? I would not think that electromagnets operating against the earth's magnetic field would have enough power with such a large motor. Obviously it depends on the balance of the satellite relative to the position of the kick motor, but still...was the balance really good enough to allow magnetic attitude control? Was it active (i.e. with feedback)? Does that imply a rate gyro? (No MEMS then, I suppose). Thanks in advance for the technical history lesson... 73, Burns W2BFJ

The angular momentum of the spinning satellite keeps it stable while the motor is firing. The motor thrust must of course be well aligned with the spin axis, but if the thrust vector is not perfect, the spinning satellite tends to even out the small deviation. One of the recent Cubesats carried high power model rocket engines to try an experimental orbit adjustment. They forgot to spin the satellite and the Cubesat tumbled wildly as a result of the motor burn. Some of these groups are really lacking in basic physics knowledge (and we are not talking about wet behind the ears students in that case.) Dan Schultz N8FGV

I disagree that it is feasible to use commercial radios that were not engineered for space flight. Many student groups have in fact used HT guts for their LEO beepsats but if you want a mission that lasts ten years instead of six months, you need to do some serious engineering. The reason why Cubesats are too damn small is not about the electronics inside the cube, but the questions you need to ask are: Can the satellite deploy enough solar cells to generate sufficient electrical power? can the satellite deploy a large enough antenna to direct a usable signal to users on Earth? Can you keep that antenna pointed at the Earth, at the same time that you are keeping the solar array pointed at the sun? Is there sufficient external area on the satellite to radiate waste heat from the electronics? A Cubesat with a Chinese HT inside and 100 square centimeters of solar cells on all six surfaces can generate one or two watts into a whip antenna, but put one of those in high altitude orbit, 10,000 km from Earth, and only hams with EME class stations will be able to make use of it. This is the reason why LEO Cubesats are easy and HEO Cubesats are hard. I appreciate the motivational stories about deaf frogs who don't know what is impossible, but sometimes you do have to pay attention to the ugly laws of physics. That's why someone once defined an Engineer as a "Disciplined Dreamer". One of my favorite New Yorker cartoons was of a motivational speaker standing in front of a room full of people wearing Superman costumes, telling them "Now go out there and fly!". Cygnus Rendezvous Delayed 48 Hours Sept 22, 2013 Orbital Sciences has confirmed Sunday morning, around 1:30 a.m. EDT, its Cygnus spacecraft established direct data contact with the International Space Station (ISS) and found that some of the data received had values that it did not expect, causing Cygnus to reject the data. This mandated an interruption of the approach sequence. Orbital has subsequently found the causes of this discrepancy and is developing a software fix. The minimum turnaround time to resume the approach to the ISS following an interruption such as this is approximately 48 hours due to orbital mechanics of the approach trajectory. -NASA.gov

(I will be demonstrating satellite communications) No way of recording so far... I will have a secretary writing down callsigns that have not so much practice in english... What is realistically achievable with a 3U cubesat with an ion engine? Cost of the satellite? Cost of the launch? Time/cost to develop ion engine? How many month/years would it take for an ion engine to boost a 3U cubesat from 600 km to 2000 km? What is the altitude limit for an ion engine? Impractical to slowly cross the radiation belt? Could a 3U cubesat with deployable solar panels power a 1 watt, 100 kHz, mode U/V transponder? I would contribute $1000 to a fund raising campaign for a financially and technically viable plan to (for example) launch in 3 years and deploy a transponder in "high" orbit 2 years later. After a few misfires, I worked Yuri today on AO-7 Mode B. He is anchored pretty close to the GF24/GF25 line, offshore from Montevideo, Uruguay. He reported GF24, so using GF24ex as his location, the Tiny Locator program says 7585 km, or 4737 miles to my QTH. I tried a few times last week, but was gone from home for much of the workweek, activating grids in NFL/GA/AL between jobs. You guys sitting around waiting for a HEO ought to get out and operate a bit...it's still fun. 73, Drew KO4MA

Our road trip has been completed after traveling about 7750 miles. While the trip was primarily a vacation, I was able to activate 30 grids along the way and make 223 contacts on FO-29 and SO-50. The grids included: EM15, EN21, EN22, EN23, EN17, DN98, DO70, DO80, DO90, EN19, EN39, EN58, EN68, EN76, EN96, FN15, FN25, FN46, FN57, FN76, FN85, FN86, FN64, FM19, FM07, EM75, EM42, EM41, EM40 & EL29. All QSOs will be uploaded to LOTW. I will use my call sign, N8RO, without any portable designation. Linear Transponder Needed for Launch Opportunity

If someone will build a linear PSK-31 transponder, I have a launch opportunity in 9 months. All it needs to be is a PSK31 Linear receiver on 28.120 MHz (3 KHz bandwidth) with AGC coupled to a downlink UHF FM transmitter of about 1 Watt. Should fit on a 3.5" square card. This is the same as Brno University has built for prior missions of PCSAT2 on the ISS back in 2006 and the two on the shelf awaiting flights. Flight delivery by May 2014 (9 months from now). Brno, may not have the man power to make a third one for this new flight opportunity. Jusst a thought for someone looking for a project. Bob, Wb4aPR

As far as I know there are no transponders on any of the qubesats being lauched. These are femtosats measuring 50cm (2 in) on a side and weighing less than 200 grams. The link budget is quite challenging with the available power budget. A transponder on this platform would need to be more power efficient in both the uplink and downlink paths than any other ham satellite to date. This would need to be accomplished in a form factor smaller than any ham satellite to date. These first launches are an effort to baseline the feasibility of the platform and lower the entry point for educational access to space. There are many ways to possibly make a platform this size into a usable communications medium, but FM voice is definitely not one of them, and SSB would be very weak signal at best. - Howie, AB2S

Microwave Modules MMG 144/V preamp manual request

After a hiatus of several years (since 1986) I am dusting off my KLM antennas and again assembling my satellite station. The rig has been upgraded to a Yaesu FT-847 and the U400 rotators replaced with a Yaesu G5500 with LVB tracker. A few years ago I purchased a Microwave Modules MMG 144/V mast mounted preamp. The seller did not have the manual or installation instructions for the preamp. Microwave Modules is no longer in business and I can not find the manual on the web. Adding to Drew's comments... A.) Reception is poor. Especially high elevation passes. Yep I hear SO-50 better with an IO antenna mounted on my HT sitting in the shack than with my fixed elevation yagis mounted outside when the bird is overhead. I can twist and turn the HT to match the bird E.) I can only rarely hear my own downlink on this satellite, even in the middle of the night when the bird is empty. F.) Numerous reports of others calling me without success, even though I'm getting into the bird fine. If it is just yourself you cannot hear then your 2m transmit is likely wiping out your 436 receive. (The third harmonic of the transmit is 437.55) You might try adding some filtering. Look at using a 2m/440 diplexer on one or the other side. (or both) Better yet, try backing power down to 5 watts and see if you don't hear yourself better. But it more sounds like you just have a general receive problem... the cable between the antenna and the preamp can matter. Like I said, I hear better with an HT mounted antenna. If I were to add even a couple feet of coax between the HT and antenna, that would change. As for fading... SO-50 is in a slow tumble. I will lose the bird for a minute and then it comes strong for a minute... then it fades again for a minute. If there is a station I want to work, I have to hope I can get a chance to call when the bird is strong to me. But if I call when the bird is weak, I will still be heard by others... SO-50 'hears' quite well, even if you don't hear it. Best go back to basics... build yourself a 'CJU' antenna (contact me off list and I can send you a link to plans a pic of mine; some 12 gauge solid copper, a piece of pex pipe and a short piece of coax with a BNC) and try listening with a handheld. As I say, on overhead passes, I have to turn on the HT and listen that way until it gets to the 'other side'. So what you are finding is fairly normal... Like many hams (I suspect), I dreamed of working satellites for decades. Followed them with at least a passing interest but always seemed to put them off till "someday". Even during the craze of the "work satellites with your handheld", I was distracted by other priorities. When I got involved in VHF/UHF a few years ago, and purchased an Icom IC-910H, I kept thinking I'd finally pull the trigger. But years passed without anything other than weak-signal contacts being made on that rig. A few months ago, I finally decided to give it a try. Downloaded SATPC32, and updated my keps. FO-29 was the next satellite coming my way, so when I was inside the footprint, I tuned around a bit, and found some stations coming in. Cool! I was actually hearing hams on satellite---next up was answering a CQ...nervously I pushed the PTT on the mic. 82 grids and a few hundred contacts later, I'm having a ball! I don't miss the birds that came before, but just enjoy what we have now. My only complaint might be that more folks are not active on F0-29 and VO-52. Even SO-50 can be nearly empty after midnight. My understanding is that within the next year we'll have 2 or 3 more linear LEO satellites, and possibly another FM bird, right? While we may not work a lot of DX on those, we should get to the point where no one has to wait long for "something" to be overhead. That's exciting to me! AMSAT is staffed with wonderful volunteers, and seems to be doing great work. I'm thrilled to be a member, even if it is #38965. The good ole days are now. Get on the birds and make some contacts. SO-50 uses a corner mounted single UHF whip for the downlink, so it is linearly polarized, and is often shielded by the body of the spacecraft. It also runs about 250mw, which is pretty low. By comparision FO-29 is circularly polarized. Operating portable on SO-50 it is extremely beneficial to be able to twist a yagi to match or peak polarity for best signal. A typical home station overcomes this with gain and circular polarity. As far as frequency, SO-50 has developed a shift in the downlink frequency that comes and goes. On a busy pass you can use the AFC function on the 910 to keep the downlink centered, or you can do as I have by setting up a series of entries in the doppler.sqf file moving the downlink frequency up and down in 2.5 khz steps. During a pass I will cycle through these to find the best one to match the frequency of the day. I'm not a rocket scientist but I have an active imagination ..... Thinking of a recent XKCD .... to achieve orbit .... the hard part isn't the altitude it's the velocity .... Would there be any advantage (cost effective) carrying a launch vehicle say to 37KM ... think Red Bull Stratos .... and firing the engines there??? Along the same thinking, sequentially launched flotillas of MEO cubesats with identical linear transponders, each with GPS derived local oscillator. If done correctly, antennas phased alike, the power from two or more would be additive and the uplinks would provide diversity. While the frustration evidenced in this digest is understandable, perhaps unknown to us AMSAT are already trying to innovate an alternative to Highly Elliptical Orbit. My Take

I guess I'm in the 25 percent who doesn't complain at Hamfests. My first AMSAT exposure was at Dayton in 2010 I had played with the idea of receiving satellites and back in the 90's actually received DOVES beacon. Back then I was a bit confused and never thought much about it. After Dayton 2010 I have slowly been assembling a station. I joined AMSAT but dropped out when they had some problems getting newsletters out. I will be rejoining shortly and hopefully have my station ready for satellite use before Winter strikes here. I honestly believe some people think AMSAT has tons of money or maybe inside contacts just to get the birds "they" want into space. When in reality it takes a lot of work from AMSAT to be considered for a ride by NASA plus donation drives to pay for these birds to be made. Once the birds are in orbit they can be used by anyone not just AMSAT members. Can you imagine if AMSAT had the power or would lock these birds down for "members only" satellites? The membership would go through the roof. Just my opinion, that and $ 2.00 might buy you a good cup of coffee these days! 73's Mike/N8GBU

Drew, KO4MA was on from EM61/EM71 intersection this morning on the FO-29 pass (and I found him high in the passband first!) and Ron N8RO was operating portable from FM07! He had quite a pileup going more towards the center of the passband. Thanks to both these skilled and dedicated operators for being out there. Domenico, I'm pretty sure members have been assigned numbers sequentially since the early days. The membership number is can be thought of more as a seniority number, the lower the number, the longer you've been a member. So the highest number is the number of people who have at sometime held a membership. The actual number is diluted by SK's and folks who for whatever reason, let their membership lapse. BoD Election & AMSAT Membership

Domenico, Wish I could provide a more detailed answer, but the reason why I claim AMSAT #38965 is because it was hand-written on the membership card that I got when I joined earlier this year. :-) Perhaps I should apply for Life Membership so that I could get a lower and easier to remember number. 688 members voting out of approximately 3,000 isn't terrible. Wish that many people (percentage wise) cared as much about our democracy in this country--especially in local elections. Congratulations to the winners, and kudos to all who ran. Remember that just by volunteering to run these members have shown their willingness to serve the rest of us. Anyone who volunteers for any role in AMSAT is worthy of appreciation. All of you have mine. Bike Frame Polar Tracker

I saw this on the instructables site. http://www.instructables.com/id/Bicycle-Frame-Polar-Tracker/ Thought it was an interesting idea for maybe tracking the sun. But maybe the more mechanically inclined might be able to build on the idea and modify it a bit more for hamsat use. Hello All, At 15 september 2013 a weather balloon will be launched from QTH De Bilt in the Netherlands with a transponder, beacon and ATV video transmitter . This event is a balloon fox hunt organized once in every year. In the past Dutch amateur radio operators worked stations - from F/G/ON/DL via the balloon transponder. 145.475Mhz downlink (FM/N). 432.550Mhz uplink (FM/N). 145.450Mhz 100mw beacon (FM/N). 2330Mhz ATV video transmitter with camera looking down. KKS-1 ?

Hi my friends, Looks like the 437.385 kHz CW beacon of KISEKI KKS-1 doesn't work any more, last heard here (western Europe) on July 30th, orb. nr. 24250. I tried to listen to the last two orbits, nr 24918 very low and 24919 max. elev. 42 deg. in vain and will try again the next one. Could someone confirm ? Thanks. 73 ! I have been try to download SatPC32 from http://www.dk1tb.de/downloadeng.htm North American Version and it starts to download a few mega bites and stops. I have tried this over the past several days and the same result. Any suggestions? Thanks Carl

I drove a bucket truck during My last few years at work . Had a wren build a nest in the boom one year . She would hide out during the day while We were on the jobsite and would return in the evenings when We parked the truck . The eggs hatched and all was well . I was amazed they actually survived .
