Exactly my point. Lots of people can build a one-of-a-kind design using parts that they pulled out of a university dumpster, especially if they have the machine shop resources of a university department at their disposal. For undergraduate students, there might be some educational value in building their own rotor, especially if it uses time that would otherwise be spent partying in Georgetown on a Saturday night. But we were talking about the "average ham", using an "average homeowner's" workbench, designing and building a workable rotor system as an alternative to paying $700 for a commercially made rotor, and sharing that design with other hams who want to save a few hundred bucks by building their own. It sounds like a suicide mission but I'm sure that won't stop people applying to go on the trip. They'd have a guaranteed place in the history books whatever the outcome. But it's the timescales that are the problem. Realistically 2018 for a Human flight would be unacheivable but the 2030's is feasible. The spacecraft would need to carry a massive amount of supplies so probably not much room for Ham equipment. Of course eliminating clothes would save a bit but its a still a huge quantity of food not to mention 18 months supply of Morphine. Still the project is just what is needed - some adventurous thinking to move Space Exploration forward. 73 Trevor M5AKA

Hi all. An interesting observation this morning (in CN87) I coppied OH5LK on FO-29 calling CQ in CW at about 1840Z while uplinking to AO-7. FO-29 was out of LK's footprint at the time. So ground to sat-to sat-to ground was observed. The downlink of AO-7 is the uplink of FO-29. To complete a qso in that mode one to tx and rx at the same time on 70cm. The proposed CubeSats come from universities across the country, a Florida high school, several non-profit organizations and NASA field centers. Something about the speed of light not being fast enough. Real bummer. These would need to be adjusted, though I think the implications for a point-point connection may not be too severe. Besides doppler shift, which could be a problem depending on how agile the ground station is, the modulation scheme (it's NOT simply FM) uses about 20 mhz of bandwidth, so you will need significant power to get the 20db S/N needed to decode anything halfway reliably. Remember, a typical AP runs 100mw on 2.4 ghz, and gets reliable communication over distances of 100's of FEET with omni antennas. Add some gain on both ends (so now you need attitude control on the satellite!), and you can go a few miles. But 100's of miles to orbit? I need someone to "do the numbers", but I bet it's not too good. Greg KO6TH

Was monitoring STRaND-1 this evening during the 0433Z pass far over the Pacific where I have an unobstructed view. STRaND-1 happened to be transmitting at it's LOS which matches object 39092's predicted LOS and was approximately a minute after object 39091 predicted LOS. Hi all, Having posted out my congratulations to all involved in the success of the launch which was very impressive and tribute to the many parties concerned. I would like to add congratulations also to the project teams involved with the payloads and of course they concern many aspects of research as well as our amateur satellite projects. I was pleased to also learn of the success of the activation of AAUSAT-3 which I understand has far exceeded expectations in the first 24 hours of operation. Congratulations to all concerned. I do not know if others are aware but the project team were at one point willing to offer to approved radio amateurs a "Blue Box" to participate in the work that they are carrying out. Hi Wouter, Thanks for the update and clarification of the keps used, I had noted a change from my previous prediction with the keps issued. Satellite actually arrived about 4 minutes later. I also followed the SSTL video streaming and saw them celebrating the success. May I also add my congratulations to the team and all concerned with the project and launch. When AO-7 is in B mode it's down link is FO-29' uplink. I was thinking, even though their ground track as seen on Satpc32 do not line up, would not they be able to "see" each other? Pendulum type elevation measurement

For some time I have wanted a more accurate antenna elevation measurement system. Shaft encoders are beyond my budget. It seems sensible to use a pendulum operated system. Digging through my 'junk' box I find I have a new Spectrol precision potentiometer still sealed in it's package. This pot is 21mm diameter, has a servo type mount,, ball race bearing, 340 degree track (continuous rotation possible) and specification is 0.5% linearity.and is very low torque. Does anyone know if there are any drawbacks to using this method of position measurement. 73 de Dick G4BBH

Hi All, On the 19:10 UTC pass both STRaND-1 and AAUSAT3 Have been received at the ISIS office in Delft. I was using some experimental receivers for this. Hi Samudra, Phased array is a generic term. Stacked yagi's are a phased array :) If you mean electrically steered phased arrays, that's another story. If you mean non-steered phase arrays, that is also another story. As far as I know there has not been much work in the amateur community on electrically steered arrays. For that matter they are not that common in the commercial world either. Even the current Ku/Ka band antenna's used on commercial aircraft for inflight Internet use mechanically steered antenna's. If you meant an array of patches to produce a flat panel antenna that had less mass than a yagi, these are really only practical at frequencies higher than UHF considering the gain to patch area ratio. I just recently found out, myself, that the grid square system is broken down to even smaller units than I imagined. it appears that the divisions continue in the same 2 to 1 ratio and is therefore variable in dimension based on you location on the planet./(closer to the equator the larger the grid further north or south of the equator the smaller the grid)/. It seems that my exact location can be found by entering /*EM55aj84ta*//in the satellite mode on the APRS.fi website, you can actually see my satellite antennas on the back deck of my house with those coordinates! (actually my "old antennas") /One additional question for the learned subscribers of this bulletin board! Is there a distance calculator that can accept up to 10 Alpha/Numeric qualifiers for ultra accurate distance calculations? Or does anyone have an idea how I could create one using EXCEL spreadsheet with embedded formulas? Hi Jim, Yes a very successful and smooth lift off to which I add my congratulations. Some ball part times in seconds that I noted on the release of the satellites after lift off. First satellite released approx 1095 secs, - second 1170 secs,- third 1260 secs - fourth 1274 secs and finally Strand-1 at 1300 seconds after lift off. the action took place at height 780km. Based upon the initial posted keps on BBS the initial predictions for my QTH in Wales ( UK) give me pass times 1718 -1730 GMT and elevation 17 degrees. - The next is a higher pass 1857 -1911 GMT elevation 74 degrees. These are only approximate and will depend on any issue of corrections to the launch time and tracking. Wish all lots of good luck especially with Strand-1 Ken Eaton GW1FKY

Curious Question About Satellite BBS

Hey All, I want to throw out a question about the Bulletin Board Systems that have flown on several amateur radio satellites in the past. A majority of these flew prior to my involvement in ham radio (licensed in 2004) and for many years I haven't had a great setup for satellite work, largely due to funds as a high school student back in the day and nowadays since I move around quite often from home to college. I would like this conversation to stay on-topic since I realize this could stray pretty easily! What was it like to have an orbiting BBS? What types of files/information were sent and how convenient was it? Was it just text or could people send small images? I may not be aware of a currently working BBS, the last one I know of off-hand was on AO-51 if I am not mistaken. I am simply fascinated with the ability to send and receive data to and from an orbiting satellite in this fashion. I look forward to hearing any responses. Bryce KB1LQC

Norm, I would love to see your design. I admit that the internet has made it much easier to locate and purchase small quantities of mechanical parts from industrial suppliers who are not accustomed to selling to amateurs, but lots of stuff can now be ordered from online websites in small quantity. We are having a workshop on small antenna systems at NASA Goddard in Maryland on March 23 for any AMSAT people who can come, it would be great if we could show off your design there. For shaft encoders, take a look at part 785-APS00B in the Mouser catalog, a magnetic absolute rotation encoder offering 0.05 degree resolution as claimed by their data sheet. Hi all! Keep your eyes peeled at hamfests for Bendix King portable radios that are downbanded into the ham band. Saw a bunch of them at Hamcation gone wanting for $20 a piece. Drop $40 (or less) on two radios and two more batteries and a charger for another $40 gives you 5w on vhf and 4w on UHF. These things are field programmable and just about indestructible. Norm n3ykf

Samudra, Most of us could probably cobble together some sort of one-of-a-kind design using surplus motors and gears from Skycraft or other sources. Making a design that is reproducible and publishable, made from parts and components that will be available in quantity a year or two or three from now is another matter. I have experience making various antenna kludges for use on field day, with door hinges as elevation bearings, and ropes, pulleys and threaded rod as actuators. Everything but the motors came from Home Depot (but the small electric screwdrivers that they sell there could make great gear motors...) I never had any intention of leaving it up all year long or operating it unattended on a roof top. My design worked OK when the air was calm but the slightest breeze would back-drive the motors and blow it all over the place. When antennas start acting as sails in the wind, you need strong motors and big gear ratios, probably with brakes. You might perhaps take a look at the AlfaSpid design, which uses automobile windshield wiper motors to drive really big worm gears. Practically speaking, you will need a better workshop than just a grinder, a drill, a saw and a few hand tools. A lathe and a small bench-top milling machine are essential to any serious metal worker. You might be able to find these at a local "maker" shop in your town if there is one, or look at www.littlemachineshop.com, $1500 should get you a basic bench top machine shop, about the cost of an all mode satellite radio. Finally, Samudra, as a graduate student working on your PhD, is this really the best use of your time? In the end, that is the reason why most hams end up writing a check and buying a ready made rotor system, so they can get on to doing other things in their hobby and their life. 73 Dan Schultz, N8FGV

My experience with pendulum elevation was the same as Greg's. The hysteresis made it unworkable. No matter how much I increased the weight or pendulum length I could not get acceptable results. I shelved the project for the time being. - Howie AB2S

Later I was on FO-29 and made the first qso with W0DHB. I worked CO6CBF at the end of the pass although we had a contact earlier as well. Saw the item in ANS about the proposed Mars flyby by the Inspirational Mars Foundation in 2018. Although lots of sites are implying there will be a human onboard the Inspirational Mars Foundation press release does not actually state that: http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=40141 You'd have thought a small automatic uncrewed spacecraft would be a better bet for a flyby and return given the timescale. 2.4GHz broadband router on satellite?

What are the possibilities of building a satellite that uses a Linksys WRT54GL router with a modified DD-wrt or HSMM-Mesh software as a store and forward BBS, to route a received request from one station to another station, or even to connect to a on board networked camera to receive images? What kind of uplink power would be needed from the home station? How fast could the speed(s) get theoretically? How big would the antenna have to be on the craft and for the ground station to even be able to do this adequately? Would the doppler be too much to even consider this? Would the space environment be too harsh for something like this? This is just something I was thinking about this morning and thought I would toss it out. James W8ISS

QFHA for SO-50... polarization issue ???

This weekend I tested a Quadrifiliar Helicoidal Antenna for 70cm (LHCP) I designed it by the online calculations of jcoppens on the internet... It is a 1/2 turn and 1 lambda, about 5 meters of elevation with ~25 cm of RG-58U (a section of it is coiled to form a balum) and then ~15 meters of A.H. LDF4-50A down to the shack directly to the radio, of course BNC to N adapter on the antenna and N to PL259 on the radio side... It's at mast top. Results are good... In passes of over 20 degrees (almost the real horizon here) I have a good copy, until... TCA, in which I lost the signal completely... TCA = Time of Closest Approach. In northbound passes (I've not tested it in southbound) it work as I just said... I have been reading and investigating this strange issue and I think it is due to polarization... I had read that SO-50 is linear polarized on 2m AND 70cm with aprox 45 degrees each other... Then Linear to LHCP in the worst case is 3dB loss (half power) but consistent over the entire pass... or have SO-50 some circular/elliptical component in it's signals that renders useless the antenna after TCA? spin maybe? There is any chapter of the book I missed or other variable(s) that I have not taking into account here? Any comment, link or other kinds of help are welcomed.. 73 de CO7WT.

CO-55 UHF beacon stuck?

Hello, This is to report that CO-55 seems to be stuck with a 100% duty cycle carrier on 436.825 MHz. The CW beacon was not operational during the 2013-02-22 02:07z pass over Northern California, instead a constant carrier was heard during the entire pass, maximum signal S8. Receiving station: FT-817ND, AD6IW 25dB 0.3NF preamp, Arrow antenna, Arduino-controlled rotator, Orbitron tracking/doppler software Not sure if this is a recent issue or not on this satellite. Today at 18:59UTC myself, (K4FEG EM55aj) and Jari, OH2FQV (KP20mf), had a successful 2way CW contact on AO7-b both signals were 559 with approximately 1 degree (or less) of elevation on both sides of the pass. The calculated distance on this QSO is approximately 7862Km based on a couple of calculation programs. Jari has an excellent station for low elevation operations and can hear to LOS with ease. DANDE launch

Hi All, On Feb18th I visited 4 Labs at UC Boulder as a part of Lockheed-Martin's Engineering Explorer Post program (www.engpost.org) that meets every other Tuesday evening from September to May each year. I am sponsoring two young men without fathers as members of this Post. What was interesting to me and potentially other AMSAT members was that they are getting ready to launch a satellite named DANDE that will transmit in the 430 MHz Amateur Radio band using a "modified AX.25" packet radio protocol for the beacon and data. In the control room I saw the TS-2000 they are using for communications. The control room and all other activites for this satellite are located in the Colorado Space Grant Labs on the University of Colorado's Bolder Campus in the Discovery Learning Center. It is my understanding that a launch of this satellite could be as early as next month (March) as the hardware is now through testing and being prepared for launch on an experimental Orbital-Science vehicle. I was told that the orbit would be very elliptical and that the DANDE was designed for low earth orbit, but this orbit will take it through the Van Allen belts, so the DANDE could have a more limited life as a result. Each of the 72 frames required 320 seconds of data collection by the Goldstone radar. The observations were made as the asteroid was moving away from Earth. The asteroid's distance from the radar dish increased from 74,000 miles (120,000 kilometers) to 195,000 miles (314,000 kilometers). The resolution is 13 feet (four meters) per pixel. The images span close to eight hours and clearly show an elongated object undergoing roughly one full rotation. The images suggest that the asteroid has a long axis of about 130 feet (40 meters). The radar observations were led by scientists Lance Benner and Marina Brozovic of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. Additional Goldstone radar observations are scheduled on February 18, 19 and 20. Radar is a powerful technique for studying an asteroid's size, shape, rotation state, surface features and surface roughness, and for improving calculations of its orbit. Radar measurements of asteroid distances and velocities often enable computation of asteroid orbits much further into the future than if radar observations weren't available. Maxwell was best known in the Amateur Radio realm for his ground-breaking series of articles, "Another Look at Reflections." Published in QST in seven parts from 1973-1976, the series explained in plain English concepts such as line loss, SWR, baluns and antenna tuners. The articles were later compiled into a book, Reflections: Transmission Lines and Antennas, which included additional material on matching networks, antennas and the Smith Chart. It was first published by the ARRL in 1990 and went through several editions. Later editions were published by CQ Communications. Aboard the station, Commander Kevin Ford told mission control during a pass over a Russian ground station that the craft is "still flying straight" and that "everybody's in good shape." John Heath G7HIA R.I.P.

I was very saddened to hear that John Heath had passed away over the weekend. I had come across him about 20yrs ago whilst calling CQ on 2m ssb, it soon became clear we had the same interest in Amateur Radio Satellites. John was a very private person and after an exchange of emails last year it became apparent that his health was declining rapidly but he never let on about the serious of his condition that's just the sort of man he was. I think Clive Wallis has posted an exelent epitaph for John which I don't to intend to elaborate on much more. I will just like to add that John was a founding member of the National Space Centre A.R.S here in Leicester and participated in a number of Special event stations on Amateur satellites :-GB1MSF,GB1WIS,GB5OSO to name but a few. Although his new QTH in Devon was not very suitable for Satellite operations he still retained a keen interest in Radi right to the end, indeed in the last 6 months of last year he was experimenting with kites and wire antennas and had constructed a QRP kit for HF. John Heath was a Gentleman in the true sense of the word and a good friend always willing to help out in any way he could I will say no more John Heath R.I.P. Robert G8ATE

I was very saddened to learn of John's passing. We had exchanged many e-mails during the last few years. I didn't know John very well, although we had met at the ASAT-UK Colloquium on several occasions. Topics we discussed by e-mail included processing Delphi 3C telemetry, OSCAR-11 spin rate, automatic Doppler tracking and ARISSat-1 decay. John was very active in using our satellites and promoting their use to others. For several years he was net controller of the Midlands two metre AMSAT net. He also wrote the Space column for RSGB's RadCom magazine for a number of years. He contributed many articles to OSCAR News, recently in the September 2012 issue about ARISSat-1 orbital decay. His last contribution to OSCAR News was a short item in the December issue, congratulating AMSAT-UK on their 200th issue of the magazine. He included a photograph of himself, Astronaut Ron Parise WA4SIR and Geoff Perry, founder of the Kettering Group of satellite observers. It was taken at the 1998 Colloquium. During the course of our discussions John mentioned that he was having some unpleasant hospital treatment. He also told me about his working career, which I thought may be of interest. As a teenager he was interested in organic chemistry and went to work in industry, eventually in the R&D department at Bakelite in Tyseley, Birmingham. In the 1960's/70's he worked on the phenolic resins used to make copper clad PCB material, and did the first industrial synthesis on nonyl phenol by ion exchange. There were massive world stocks of Nonene at knock down prices so they were looking for a way to use it to make phenol/formaldehyde resins used in PCB manufacture. His YL Pam at that time worked in a small hairdressing supplies business and he sometimes worked with her when they needed extra staff to cover late night opening. After his marriage to Pam, her firm decided to open a branch in Leicester and they were offered the opportunity to re-locate and run the new operation. Together they built up the business, diversifying into related activities with a skin care manufacturing company (where his science background was invaluable), a beauty products wholesale business and a mail order operation. The business expanded from 6 people to a staff of nearly 200 on four sites. John said that Amateur radio helped to keep him sane by giving him a totally different set of things to think about and emptied his head of business concerns for a few hours each week! A few years ago Pam was diagnosed with a serious illness and confined to a wheel chair. This caused them to bring forward their retirement plans and they moved to Devon. Greetings, Late last night I saw that our own Jim Adams, K0BAM, from Colorado, in the March 2013 QST. See page 20 for a picture of Jim operating his portable Arrow setup in the snow.
