Aloha All It appears that the upcoming AO7 pass over Hawaii (0157Z) will be in MODE B. The footprint will extend as far east as the western Iowa border. Parts of Minnesota and Texas will also be in "my" footprint. Short notice, I realize, however I will try to be on that pass. For those further east; I still am not mobile and the mountains still keep me pinned in hihi. I am up on Jt65 is you would like to work DX that mode. Mahalo. Hi! I have been going through my pictures and video from last weekend's AMSAT Symposium in Orlando, as well as the pictures and video taken by Hector CO6CBF (I made a copy of his camera's memory card, before he returned to Cuba). I have posted two more videos so far. First, a video showing John K8YSE at the Symposium using a laptop to work SO-50 from his home station in Ohio on Friday, 26 October, while sitting in the lobby of the Symposium hotel. Hector made this video, and during the video John handed the microphone to Hector so he could briefly talk through John's station. This video is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKDXtAaaxdk I asked Hector if I could post this video to YouTube, as it was one he made. He said I could. For all the times I have worked John while he has been operating it remotely, this video is the first time I have seen John in action using his station remotely. During the post-Symposium tour of the Kennedy Space Center last Monday (29 October), I made a video as I walked under the Saturn V moon rocket at the space center's Apollo-Saturn V Center. Since I did not do any commentary, I removed the audio track before uploading. An impressive sight! Thanks to all those who offered suggestions. In the end it was a strange problem related to the fact that I had another USB Audio CODEC device plugged into the hub (USB record turntable for making digital copies of LPs). Once I unplugged it and reconfigured the IN/Out assignment to follow the Audio Map that WSJT provides, everything worked just fine. So I guess I could say that I now have an "unplug and play" system at least when it comes to using WSJT :) Special thanks to Neal Campbell for helping me sort this out. 73 Rick W2JAZ

SPOT THE SPACE STATION OVER YOUR BACKYARD WITH NEW NASA SERVICE WASHINGTON -- On the 12th anniversary of crews continuously living and working aboard the International Space Station, NASA announced Friday a new service to help people see the orbiting laboratory when it passes overhead. "Spot the Station" will send an email or text message to those who sign up for the service a few hours before they will be able to see the space station. "It's really remarkable to see the space station fly overhead and to realize humans built an orbital complex that can be spotted from Earth by almost anyone looking up at just the right moment," said William Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator for human exploration and operations. "We're accomplishing science on the space station that is helping to improve life on Earth and paving the way for future exploration of deep space." When the space station is visible -- typically at dawn and dusk -- it is the brightest object in the night sky, other than the moon. On a clear night, the station is visible as a fast moving point of light, similar in size and brightness to the planet Venus. "Spot the Station" users will have the options to receive alerts about morning, evening or both types of sightings. The International Space Station's trajectory passes over more than 90 percent of Earth's population. The service is designed to only notify users of passes that are high enough in the sky to be easily visible over trees, buildings and other objects on the horizon. NASA's Johnson Space Center calculates the sighting information several times a week for more than 4,600 locations worldwide, all of which are available on "Spot the Station." Hi All I have just returned from the AMSAT conference in Orlando FL one of the European is no longer flying the Clyde Space batteries because of performance issues. I would like to know the group thoughts on their batteries and lithium batteries in general. The AMSAT team is warning us about charging batteries below 0 deg c. In talking to many teams on ElaNa 4 there does seem too much concern about charging batteries cold. Please let us know your thoughts. If you desire we will not publish your responses. a fun week in Florida!

Hi! I made it home an hour ago, after a great week in Florida. The AMSAT Symposium was great, and thanks to all of those who worked to put on this event. And, of course, having Hector CO6CBF at the Symposium made this even better. On my way home from the Phoenix airport, I stopped at my mailbox. I had more checks and money orders sitting in their for the so- called "Hector fund" that arrived in the past week. Again, many thanks to everyone who has sent or given me contributions to help with the expenses for this trip. It is obvious that this was extremely successful - just watch the video from Hector's presentation on Saturday to see that. I have incurred expenses related to bringing Hector to the Symposium totaling $2413.30, and received contributions totaling $1960.00! The expenses totaled a little more than I had originally estimated (I was working with an estimate of $2000 in the beginning), but I never thought I would have received almost $2000 in contributions!! If there are other contributions in the mail, I will add that to my spreadsheet and post an update later. I don't think I will need any other contributions toward this effort. THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!!! On my way home from the airport, I called Hector. He made it home OK, and is now in the process of clearing the gear he brought back from Florida through the processes of Cuban Customs and the Cuban communications ministry. This is normal, and he was confident he could get everything cleared without incident. Hector also said he hopes to be able to post a message here on the -BB tomorrow, in part to thank everyone that helped make his trip to Florida possible. Bad news.... Cuban Satellite Group First Meeting postponed

Due to the severe impact caused by Hurricane Sandy last week to the eastern provinces of Cuba we were asked to postpone the "GROS National Meeting" we had scheduled for November 8th to 11th. The Meeting location at Camagüey did not receive any damage but the provinces of "Santiago de Cuba", "Holguín" and "Guantánamo" were badly affected and many houses, schools and factories loss their roofs or were damaged by fallen trees. Several ham radio operators lost their houses. Most of the state resources are now been prioritized to assist to the people of this three provinces that lost their houses. Under this circumstances we were asked to reschedule the National Meeting and the Coordination Board agreed with the request as a solidarity to our colleagues. Many other activities the National Amateur Radio Federation (F.R.C.) had scheduled were also postponed included its National Council. We are working on possible dates not sooner than January. We sorry all the inconvenience and the G.R.O.S. Coordination Board (Grupo de Radioaficionados para Operaciones Satelitales) will announce the new date when possible. We still have great hopes with this First Meeting and during this extra months we will work harder to improve our work and make it better. 73, G.R.O.S. Polarization for ISS and Weather Satellites

I haven't posted here in a very long time. I hope this works. I am building two Quadrifilar Helix antennas (from QST, August 1996); one for weather satellite experimentation, and one as a backup antenna for an upcoming ARISS contact. I haven't found anything in the ARRL antenna book, or on the web, that specifically says that one mode (RHCP or LHCP) of circular polarization is better than the other for either of the two applications noted above. Any insight or experience with polarization issues with the ISS and weather satellites are appreciated. The last time I did an ARISS contact, I was plagued with very deep fades, and want to do better this time. ARISS Project Wins Public Relations Award

Special event with astronaut wins public relations award - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As Clint Bradford of Jurupa Valley said, “It was 13 months of planning for 10 minutes of conversation, but, oh!, what a conversation!” “‘LIVE! … from outer space!’ Students speak to an astronaut in the orbiting International Space Station” was the special event on April 19, 2012 that earned an award for Karen and Clint Bradford in annual competition by the Public Relations Society of America. The event was planned for the 120 students of Flabob Airport Preparatory Academy and more than 80 parents, community leaders, media representatives and interested persons. Clint initiated the event because of his hobby in ham radio and volunteer position with NASA through Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS): He provides school technical support for students in North America to talk to astronauts aboard the orbiting space station. NASA’s “Teaching from Space” program is available to any school that applies, but the typical wait-time from application to event is three years. He approached Kathy Rohm, vice president and director of community relations at Flabob Airport Preparatory Academy, which is supported by the Tom Wathen Center. She was enthusiastic to sponsor the literally out-of-this-world, once-in-a-lifetime special event to inspire students. More than 2,900 emails flew between Clint, Kathy, NASA, Flabob staffer Nina Bentham and ARISS volunteers to produce the event. NASA-Houston flight director Phil Engelauf, who grew up in Rubidoux and whose mother, Beverly, still lives here, was invited to the event. His duties prevented him from attending, but he sent warm regards to the students in a special message that is posted at the event's Web site - http://iss-flabob.com (on the blog). The event went according to plan, except for a momentary glitch with audio quality, despite having tested the system for three days preceding the event. Clint quickly figured out a solution, although he later said that he was only 90 seconds from NASA terminating the call if he had not succeeded. “When we looked around the hangar at the conclusion of the contact, hearing the students’ whoops of happiness, we saw more than a few adults wiping at their eyes … us included,” Karen said. “We felt intensely rewarded to think how our students may feel throughout their lives when they look up in the sky and remember the thrilling day when Flight Engineer Don Pettit answered their questions.” Student Brittany Cain had asked, “Besides missing your family and friends, what is the biggest adjustment you have made for this mission?” The assembled group laughed when Pettit replied he missed not being able to take a bath for six months! The mission of Flabob Airport Preparatory Academy is to use aviation as a tool to motivate students to achieve their personal, academic, and career goals. Current statistics reveal that American students severely lag behind their foreign peers: In a study of 31 countries, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ranked Americans 21st in science and 25th in math. Consequently, President Obama launched the Educate to Innovate Campaign in 2009 to unite teachers, parents, businesses and students toward excellence in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) studies. [ANS thanks the AMSAT Board of Directors for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Fox-1 Satellite in Development; Working on Partnerships for Launch AMSAT Vice-President Engineering, Tony Monteiro, AA2TX presented the latest status on the design, development, and construction of the Fox-1A satellite project. This is the 1U cubesat which is slated as the FM repeater transponder to replace AO-51. Project ELaNa, NASA's "Educational Launch of NanoSat" managed by the Launch Services Program at the Kennedy Space Center, accepted the AMSAT Fox-1 cubesat into this educational launch initiative on its merits toward meeting NASA's strategic and educational goals. AMSAT met the NASA goals by designing a satellite mission in support of education with amateur radio included: + The Fox family of cubesats are ham radio transponders that are designed to host science experiment payloads. + AMSAT will partner with universities to develop these science and educational missions. + When the university missions gain a free launch for their primaary scientific missions AMSAT's amateur radio transponder will also be aboard. + After the primary science/education mission is completed the AMSAT transponder will become available full-time for amateur radio ser- vice. AMSAT will work with NASA in a collaborative agreement where NASA will cover the integration and launch costs. In the meantime, AMSAT must still pay for the development costs of the cubesats and find talented volunteers to work on the design. Fox-1A's design goals include: + Fox-1 is designed to operate in sunlight without batteries once the battery system fails. This applies lessons learned from AO-51 and ARISSat-1 operations. + In case of IHU computer failure Fox-1 will continue to operate its FM repeater in a basic, 'zombie sat' mode, so that the repeater remains on-the-air. + Fox-1 is designed as the immediate replacement for AO-51. Its U/V (Mode B) transponder will make it even easier to work with modest equipment. + From the ground user's perspective, the same FM amateur radio equipment used for AO-51 may be used for Fox-1. Fox-1 continues AMSAT's long record of success as an all-volunteer organization providing access to space communications for students in a curriculum setting as well the private citizen. AMSAT's Fox-1 project timeline is based on targeting a launch in the second half of 2013. NASA will determine on which flight each of the Project ELaNa CubeSats fly. Clyde Space are leading the development and assembly of this CubeSat project for the UK Space Agency. The PCBs were taken to Glasgow in a Pelicase by Graham Shirville, G3VZV who handed them to Steve Greenland Systems Engineer at Clyde Space. The Ukrainian Yuzhnoye engineering office is working on the develop- ment of Cyclone-4, a new Cyclone series vehicle to be commercialized exclusively by ACS. The Cyclone series of launch vehicles is one of the most successful series of rockets ever developed building on the prior successes of the Cyclone-2, and Cyclone-3 series initially bas- ed on the SS-9 Scarp Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. The High Altitude Student Platform (HASP) is a balloon-borne instru- ment stack that provides an annual near-space flight opportunity for 12 instruments built by students. HASP houses and provides power, mechanical support, interactivity and communications for the instru- ments. It can be used to flight-test compact satellites, prototypes and other small payloads designed and built by students. HASP can support about 200 pounds for payloads and test articles. Since 2006, the HASP program has flown 60 payloads involving more than 500 stu- dents from 14 states, Puerto Rico and Canada. Flights are launched from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility's remote site in Fort Sumner, N.M., and typically achieve 15 to 20 hours' duration at an altitude of about 23 miles. The balloon competition is a joint project between NASA and the Louis- iana Space Consortium (LaSPACE) in Baton Rouge. Re: Polarization for ISS and Weather Satellites

The antennas on the ISS are ground plane type antennas for 2m and 70cm. So one could just say that the antennas are vertically polarized. However, the ISS superstructure has gotten so big that it does actually block or reflect the signal between the ISS and the ground station. So we recommend that a circular polarized beam be used as the polarity changes throughout the pass. I think most of the ARISS schools have used RHCP but there have been a few where switching to LHCP during the pass did help. As a side note, the ARISS schools are to have a backup radio with an antenna that has no moving parts. Usually that means a 1/4 wave vertical. I use a vertical and an Eggbeater for my school contacts with an antenna switch between the two. You might want to do the same thing with a Quadrifilar and a vertical. I always tell the backup radio operator to switch between the two during the pass and go with whichever has the greater signal strength. They are usually stunned by the change in signal strength between the two as the pass progresses. The signal with the beam is much more stable and stronger as expected. Ground Stations say as follows. At first we think to take down the photograph which FITSAT took at the time of release by the first priority. And we test it at the time to pass south around 45 degrees of the ground station. The range that we can receive is limited at present. We think to have the amateure ham of the other countries participate in this experiment of 5.84GHz after we took down the photograph which FITSAT took when KIBO released it. We sent a command last night and took down some image data. Because we received it while correcting Doppler by hand, there were quite many errors. We were able to restore an image a little when we revised the error data by hand. And a solar panel of ISS came out. If we can be restored to the original state neatly, we will open it to the public. RE NO-44 "worked" with HT and Elk

HI This is for Wayne, W9AE I apologize if I was a bit vague, but I was dancing around my living room and quite excited. I "worked" NO-44 by digipeating packet data to the satellite and got a confirmation on the sat board that it heard me. I can't seem to get a solid ack back from it so I did not send a message to another user. However, I saw that somebody sent me a message but it didn't come through...my radio never heard it. I am only working 5 watts with an HT. I hope this clears things up a bit. I'm new at this myself so that was my first NO-44 contact. Hi All, This may seem odd but I cannot seem to locate any website that has a simple list of ACTIVE satellites with data showing: Name ID number Up/Down Frequencies Modes or modulation info maybe output power and?? other info It would be a really useful checksheet to have by you when operating portable and, I am told that, if it were created in an xml format, it could be searchable by machines as well as humans! If there is not such a list in existence perhaps the experts meeting at Orlando this weekend could create something for us? many thanks Graham G3VZV

Hi, Not quite the answer to the question or containing the information that was being pursued The UDS_Satellite_Database is a very comprehensive list of satellites launched or constructed with other background information, I am mentioning it because it is in an "EXCEL" format and could therefore be used as tool and starting point to edit and or add the information required. I did attempt to do something on these lines a few years ago especially as on our 80 metre Amast-UK net information we usually get asked about satellite details. The problem was and still is, managing such a list bearing in mind that we now have many " cubesats" being launched. Quite a number are not listed or classed as an "Amatuer Satellite " status but still have many followers - from what I gleam on the BBS. The source and release of information on the status or operation of some of the satellites has been very difficult to pursue, thus keeping any proposed file updated is perhaps beyond its manager at the moment. Hector update - Wednesday (24 October) evening

Hi! Hector CO6CBF is in Miami! The flight from his home city Cienfuegos arrived in the late morning, then Hector went through Customs and Immigration at the Miami airport. After that, he has been spending the day with his friends in Miami before I meet up with him tomorrow morning. Hector and I chatted on the phone in the late afternoon after I arrived from Phoenix, and - in English and Spanish (he's wanting to speak more English this week) - said he was very happy to be in Miami. Hector confirmed he was allowed to stay in the U.S. for 7 days under his U.S. entry visa, and he will fly home next Wednesday (10/31) morning. I am not sure Hector has access to his two e-mail accounts back in Cuba while he is in the U.S. I will confirm that in the morning, so please be patient if you sent Hector an e-mail and he has not responded to it. I will see him tomorrow morning, and we should be in Orlando around midday. For me, it was almost surreal that I was able to dial a Miami phone number, instead of a Cuban phone number, and hear Hector's voice on the other end of the call. Seven months of work paid off, and now we can look forward to seeing and hearing Hector at the Symposium this weekend. Thanks again to everyone who played a part in this effort, no matter how big or small the contribution was, and whether or not your contribution was monetary or something else. APRS Balloon antenna tracking

A local University is going to do a balloon launch and release a paper airplane this Saturday. they will have APRS on both the balloon and airplane with the goal to find both when they land. I won't be able to join the chase but just for fun I would like to use my satellite antenna array to track them. Is anyone aware of a program that will steer the antenna's based on received APRS data? I am using an LVB tracker and Yaesu 5400 setup and have SATPC32 and Nova for windows if there is some sort of an interface program. Thanks//Dave WB9YIG

Regularly we see passionate emails about the following subjects: - Cubesats vs microsats - FM vs SSB - HEO vs MEO vs LEO - Pacsats vs voice - Easy vs hard sats One desire stands out as a common element in most of these heated email threads. That is the desire for a satellite to facilitate 2-way communications. I happen to find that aspect of satellites most enjoyable whether on an FM, SSB, or digital bird. You can keep pimping your ideas for the perfect satellite to the Internet OR get with an existing program that is working to launch a transponder. Sending emails over and over stating how beep-beeps don’t put entries in your logbook doesn’t contribute to the launch of new satellites. Hector update - Monday 10/22

Hi! Thanks again to all the hams who have been sending me checks to help with the effort to bring Hector to the AMSAT Symposium later this week. As of today, I have received a total of $935 from those checks. This will cover almost half of what I estimate the total costs will end up being for this effort, and I appreciate the help. I told Hector about this via e-mail earlier today, and he also appreciates the generosity of everyone who is helping with this trip. Hector will fly to Miami on Wednesday, arriving a couple of hours before I arrive later in the afternoon. Hector has a friend in Miami who will meet him in the Miami airport after clearing US Customs and Immigration, and then I'll get with him after I arrive. The current plan is for the two of us to drive up from Miami to Orlando on Thursday morning, arriving in Orlando around midday depending on when we get out of the Miami area. Hector will be at the Symposium all weekend, and also take the KSC tour next Monday (10/29). His flight home is next Wednesday (10/31), so we will return to Miami either after the KSC tour Monday evening or early Tuesday morning, so he has more time to spend with his friends down there before his flight home. Thanks again for all the support - and not just those sending me checks. I have received lots of e-mails, and also seen posts on other public forums, with good words about this effort. SatPC32 sets FT-817 doppler reversed

I am getting a problem with SatPC32 V. 12.8b and CAT control FT-817ND. The doppler correction is perfect with two separate FT-817s, one for TX and one for RX. Recently I have been having problems when using one FT-817 simplex for ISS and similar sats. SatPC32 is calculating correct downlink frequency with doppler correction but is setting the rig to the uplink frequency during receive and downlink frequency during transmit. Sometimes it works correctly but more often it has this problem. I slowed the CAT rate in case there were errors but no improvement. Any ideas or suggestions please? Dick

There's an article in October 2012 QST in which the author WA8SME speaks of problems with this combination. Sounds like a timing problem or the like and does not look to be readily fixable. I propose that AMSAT-NA start charging to post on the BB. My proposal goes something like this; to be able to post on the AMSAT-BB, the individual posting must link a PayPal account or Valid Credit Card that AMSAT-NA can charge each time that they post on the BB. The fee schedule would be as follows: Members; $1.00 per post, Non-members; $1.50 per post, a monthly charge for members of $60.00 per month for unlimited posts for that month and non-members a monthly charge $100.00 for the same unlimited monthly posting. Then there could be an annual charge to members of $500.00 for 1 year of unlimited postings or for non-members an annual charge of $750.00 for unlimited postings. Finally we could sell Lifetime Posting Privileges for a one time fee of $5,000.00 for members and non-members a charge of $7,500.00. These fee schedules are in line with many of the other organizations and just think of the funding that could be brought in for launching new satellites!! Heck we could have HEO's, MEO's, LEO's and NEO's. There aren't enough engineering schools in the world to help us build the satellites. In the last month alone the fees would have funded putting a linear transponder on the MOON! This is just one simple man's idea of how we could raise the money to get us some more Satellites in orbit!! Heck, we are being charged for everything else why not tap into this valuable resource and raise some money for a good cause! And you folks thought it would be tough to raise the money! While this payment model is somewhat in jest, I would like to suggest that K4FEG is not wrong. It is the usual practice of organizations with internet message boards to restrict posting privileges to members only, and to enforce those restrictions by auditing the list members regularly. This actually is normal practice, and I am slightly surprised that AMSAT-NA doesn't do this. I think this is an excellent idea, is easily doable with free mailing list and message board software. Since it's his idea, it should be his glory, so I nominate K4FEG to be AMSAT-BB list maintainer. The radio connection was handled by telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Approximately 700 students, teachers and guests were in attendance - 200 in the gym watched live and another 500 in class- rooms watched a "live stream" of the contact. The audience included several VIPs: the UK Ambassador Alice Walpole, the Head Teacher Heather Duxbury and the Deputy Head Teachers (Kath Griffiths and Mark Stenton) of both primary and secondary sections. Guest speakers gave talks on satellites as well as the NASA "Moon Buggie" project. The contact was one of the educational activities the students from both sections took part in to learn about electri- city, astronomy and physics. Italy ----- On Tuesday, October 9, Liceo Statale Adelaide Cairoli in Pavia, Italy took part in its Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact via station W6SRJ in California. On-orbit astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, was able to answer 18 questions during the contact as nearly 1100 students gathered for the event. The school uses amateur radio as a teaching tool and its radio club provides students the opportunity to speak with other amateurs all over the world using different languages. This ARISS contact was used to focus on technology, science and foreign languages. Telebridge station IK1SLD in Italy provided the radio connection. Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI, on the ISS participated in the contact which was the featured event of the PACIFICON Youth Program that emphasized hands-on radio operation, electronics kit building, orbital mathematics and CubeSat satellite design, among other STEM activities. Fellow astronaut Dr. Lee Morin gave a presentation at the event and exchanged greetings with Hoshide at the end of the ISS pass. [ANS thanks Carol Jackson, KB3LKI for the above information] --------------------------------------------------------------------- AO-27 Recovery Work Still in Progress AO-27 Command Station Michael Wyrick, N3UC reported on the team's to recover the satellite and return its FM repeater back to service after it stopped responding on October 5. The next day AO-27 was restored back to running on its primary Boot- loader. Control operators were able to turn on the Transmitter for a short time. The command team downloaded the memory dump between October 8-12 to try to determine the cause of the failure. This was slowed due to interference. Please, if you can't hear the bird in Analog mode, please don't transmit to it. On October 14 the command team recovered from the AFSK modem problem which was one of the initial symptoms of the problems. They were able to upload the entire kernel. As of October 15 they finished uploading the high level code to AO-27. The TOPR schedule will be on digital for the entire pass until the command team collects enough telemetry and finishes the on-orbit checkout. AO-27 crashed once again on October 16. The command team once again recovered to the bootloader state, recovered from another occurrence of the AFSK modem problem and once again is attempting another soft- ware upload. ATTENTION OPERATORS: To prevent interfering with the command team's recovery efforts, if you can't hear AO-27 in Analog mode, please don't transmit to it. Use your APRS radio for global contacts at your JOTA station. You can use your APRS radio or HT to text message a CQ to all other JOTA stations with an APRS radio anywhere in the world. You need to remember nothing about the network, or paths, or freqs or do any set up. Just use the normal APRS frequency. Just send an APRS message to ANSRVR and make the first two words of the message be CQ JOTA . Your message will be delivered instantly to every other JOTA station in the world * that has also sent a similar ANSRVR message*. Example: Message to ANSRVR: CQ JOTA fm Four Rivers Dist, MD This Logs you into the ANSRVR which forwards the message to every other similar station instantly. NOTE. This is just a way of calling a global CQ. You should answer any incoming such message with a direct response to the CALLSIGN of the sending station, not to ANSRVR. ANSRVR is a group ANOUNCEMENT SERVER that lets you see the callsigns of everyone else that is playing. After you see the callsigns, from then on, you use normal one-on-one messages with that station to complete the contact. ANSRVR replaces the original CQSRVR because CQSRVR ignores stations using tactical callsigns and therefor impractical for general use where some stations may have tactical calls. LEO to HEO

Morning folks, I'm a relatively new ham and started following amsat only a few months so forgive something of a novice question. The biggest trouble I see the community hitching a ride to a high orbit although low orbits seem to be easy to get. So my question is this, who says we can't launch a sat in LEO and design it to move itself up to a higher orbit? I mean if NASA can build probes capable of reaching mars, it stands to reason we can build a bird to move only a few thousand miles. Thanks, Joshua Abraham, KJ4VYR

Rubbish! I built my own antennae from wood and welding rod, cut my own phasing lines and built a computer from scraps to run the tracker software. I did have an AZ-EL motor set from the 80s but it had to have the controller rebuilt and the case crack repaired. My old radio FT726 doesn't have computer control so I am building a softrock SDR station with transverters for 2m and 70cm and my goal is to have it track and adjust for doppler while I make contacts whilst I am busy during a 7-10 min LEO pass. The HEO crowd have some amazing technology, but it's going to cost a fortune - a very large fortune - to fly these Death Star-sized satellites *at all*, never mind into HEO. The future is small satellites, where we will have to cram as much radio into a tiny cubesat payload as we can. Even then it's going to be expensive, so we're going to need to look at countries that are developing their space programme to get launches - and that's going to be India, Pakistan, Iran if they get their shit together, maybe Israel if we can get them interested in anything other than "observation" satellites and probably one or two others. Maybe some wealthyish African countries will get in on it, like the DRC or Kenya. We're going to have to try coming up with clever satellites, rather than flying a bent-pipe box the size of a fridge. You make an excellent point, but I think you are assuming that the sat would be equipped with a solid fuel or other form of combustible/volatile propulsion. A cold-gas microthruster along with some sort of variable magnetic stabilization could in theory work around any liability concerns as liquid nitrogen, helium, etc can't explode under most conditions. I'm not sure about size requirements/ restrictions however. I'm far from an expert but I would guess if something like this could make it into orbit, the thruster would provide enough power to nudge the sat up and then use the planets gravity to acelerate it out to at least a MEO. It might even be able to do something like this in something as small as a 3U cubesat.
