Hi all, I have not posted here for some months, I think since after the April Gregarine non-event. I expressed skepticism then on whether we would have an ultimate successful deployment. It is my hope that the new Board of Directors for AMSAT will look long and hard at this situation and come away with good lessons learned. We gave up far too much control in the name of International cooperation I think. That being said, I do disagree with the ideas presented in post 16 below and others who belittle the student satellite initiatives as "Squakboxes". As long as FCC or IARU or ITU or anybody else in the world's regulations about not using Amateur Radio frequencies for "Pecuniary" gain as it says in Part 97.3 (4) of our FCC rules, (Meaning you cannot make money off of the service or frequencies), then I have no problem with the use of amateur radio frequencies to further education and science training. UK Pass 02.56utc. 80dg Max elevation this pass, very strong signal received. 2 SSTV images plus several audio messages received. One audio tlm as follows: MET = 501 minutes IHU Temp = +26C Control Panel Temp = +21C Battery Voltage = 33.92V Battery Current = -448mA Missed a second tlm whilst trying the transponder, see below. Local QRM obliterating the CW/Telemetry frequency. Tumbling seems to have remained consistent. Gave the transponder a try with 50W to an omni whilst the satellite was at its closest but couldn't hear anything in the downlink passband. David G8OQW ********

Hi Bruce, Yes the NASA announcer said 4 satellites, presumbly refering also to the one that's still in Russia and 2 in the States ? Let's hope one more is sent up in time for the February space walk. Arissat-1 low/high power modes

After the last pass over the UK here I had a look at the switch on times and found that the last time it switched on, it stayed on.. times I noted were Power Off: 01:21:53 Power On: 01:23:56 Power Off: 01:24:40 Power On: 01:26:41 According to this it should've either switched off or come out of eclipse by 01:27:21 - it stayed on - so I rolled back my tracking software to 01:27:21 and found that the sat was barely out of eclipse.. right on the fringe. The power saving seems to switch off at the first sign of sun, there isn't a delay. Just my observations :-) 73 Pete 2i0VAX

Since the first passes over the US west coast aren't until after midnight local time (about 0730 UTC Thursday, 7 hours from now), it would be great if someone could put a recording of the BPSK beacon on the net somewhere. I'm anxious to see if my format actually works over a real space link, what the fade characteristics are like, etc. Just a couple of minutes would be fine. I prefer uncompressed .wav, not a lossy format like mp3 or mp4. I can convert sample rates, so there's no need to use a high one, just one high enough to capture the entire bandwidth of the signal. If you do post something, please announce it here so others needn't duplicate your efforts. Thanks! Phil, KA9Q

Hi all!! Have been searching for a method of recording sstv in the field and post processing it at home. MMSSTV uses a .mmv format. It (the audio format)doesn't look well supported. I'd prefer something like .wav which is pretty plain jane. Any ideas? Not married to MMSSTV, just the first one I'd found that was easy to use. Thanks, Norm

I apologize for the links that non-Mac folks' systems wouldn't allow entry or didn't like the "tinyurl" forwarder ... something about long filenames and symbols in the filenames. ANYWAY - Here'a about 60 screenshots taken from the deployment ... http://gallery.me.com/clintbradford#100271 I also have "both" video sessions: -The first - the first 30+ minutes of EVA29 ... nice footage, but deployment delayed, of course. -The second - the deployment, but no video from ISS nor astronauts' helmets during actual deployment - just audio and static screens during the physical deployment. (But I'll wager that the Russian Federal Space Administration will have some great photos and/or video of it on their site soon ... (grin).) Now bring on those reception reports. The ARISSat-1 satellite will be in High power mode (continuous transmission) when in the sun and go to Low power (intermittent) mode when in eclipse. 73, Gould

Crew handleing of ARISSat-1

Is it just me, or did it look that crew did handle the satellite extremely unprofessional ? The removal of the Solar Array covers was pretty uncoordinated. They basically just ripped them off. Once outside they let the satellite bounce around like a basketball. For several minutes the satellite was just left to his own devices dangling from a teather, hitting the station all over the place, while the Astronauts try to position themselves. Then they pulled it in and flipped the switches without any coordination with the ground and apparently no regards of the order the switches are supposed to be flipped. He then described the LED's he was seeing, and it was pretty apparent that he didn't knew how it was _supposed_ to be look like. This became even more apparent when they discussed how many antennas are actually supposed to be attached to the satellite. One said : "I was here 3 months earlier and there was only one". Is that the way to check that the device is in a correct configuration ? Just to the end, when the decision has been made not to deploy, somebody at the ground warned them to be careful not to break any solar arrays. IMHO it is a miracle that the solar arrays are still intact, and I would not be surprised if they broke of the second antenna because of careless handling. I understand that it must be very difficult to do all this is space in a bulky space-suit. But nevertheless this is a Satellite which is fragile and needs the be handled carefully. There are procedures to follow and checks to make before the sat is deployed. If it would have come to the crew, they would have just pushed it out and be done with it. This is all financed by donations and build by volunteers. Many people put a lot of effort into this. Its not that we can just build and launch another one, if they screw it up. I think its simply unexcusable that the correct configuration of the satellite has not been confirmed even before the spacewalk has started. Very disappointing. Andreas Kellner - VK4FHAW

Adding one point to WD9EWK's info, the GPS display needs to show an accuracy of 20 feet or less. While I was also holding my breath as they let the bird bump around loose on the tether etc, I also notice quite early that there appeared to be no antenna on one side of the box. I don't think the cosmonauts doing the deployment broke it off. I think it was not there as it came out the hatch. Is it the 70cm antenna or the 2m antenna that was missing? If the 2m, perhaps they did not get it re-connected after using the external station antenna last week. OTOH, they may never have hooked up the 70cm and never realized there was one. One of the cosmonauts said (approx) "I've been here for 3 months and it NEVER had another antenna". Burns, W2BFJ

Arissat-1 deploy behind schedule

The spacewalk is current at least 10 minute behind schedule. As nearly as I can hear, they have not opened the hatch yet (at about 1444Z). Currently doing leak checks etc. There is also currently no video, except from Mission Control Moscow. They cosmonauts are wearing helmet cams, but the NASA commentator indicated that the coverage would be spotty. 73 from Burns, W2BFJ

Arissat-1 mode transistions

Hi all. I see the first couple of orbits in range of the UK are in eclipse or passing from eclipse to sunlight. Is the satellite always in its 'low power mode' in eclipse? Also, when the satellite passes into sunlight, is the transistion to 'normal mode' instant or is there a short delay? This could be very interesting as we can see the ISS going into sunlight and we should be able to hear when Arissat does the same and then measure the time difference (Arissat first ISS second hopefully) Thanks David G0MRF

I think I figured this out. Everything is wired correctly (see below). The issue is that the recorder has an extremely wide dynamic range, handling line level to mic input levels. It appears that the "AGC" looks at both channels, and adjusts both based on the "loudest" --- so if I have a large audio line input on one side (R), and a small mic input on the other (L) , the gain is set for the line and suppresses the mic into the noise. If I turn the volume down on the HT audio, the mic input comes up out of the noise. So I need a better, adjustable "pad" for the line level audio coming from the HT (better than the attenuating patch cable I am using)-- I was thinking of a "pot" divider with the input on the outer terminals, and the output off of the center pin--- should I use a big (100K) or small-value (100) pot? NASA Television will broadcast the spacewalk beginning at 9 a.m. CDT. Expedition 28 Russian Flight Engineers Sergei Volkov and Alexander Samokutyaev will install laser communications equipment and replace experiments on the Zvezda service module. They also will retrieve a rendezvous antenna, relocate a boom structure to aid future spacewalks and deploy a small satellite equipped with an amateur radio transmitter and a student-built experiment. The duo will wear Russian Orlan spacesuits and will emerge from the Pirs docking compartment airlock at about 9:30 a.m. The spacewalk will be the third for Volkov, who performed two spacewalks as Expedition 17 commander in 2008. This will be the first spacewalk for Samokutyaev. He's only 12 years, and is always active on AO-51 and VO-52. Sorry to re-re-re-post this - but we're in a new month on the system ... and further apologies if the answer is really obvious ... Do the ARISS powers-that-be know WHY some had tremendous success hearing the WONDERFUL pre-recorded messages from kids on 145.95 last weekend - while some passes had "empty carrier" or nothing on 145.95? I experienced both phenomena - just a "keying up" and dead silence for a few seconds at 1:03AM PDT Sunday morning, and then wonderful, full kids' messages during the 2:38AM PDT pass. Clint Bradford

ARISSat-1 initial reception reports

We are looking for stations to make early reception reports (1520Z-1800Z) after the ARISSat-1/Kedr release on Wednesday. It looks like southern South America, very southern South Africa, followed by southeast Asia should be the first areas to receive the signals. The satellite is scheduled to be deployed from the ISS during EVA-29 on Wednesday 3 Aug around 1507Z. There is a 15 minute delay after the safety switches are all thrown before the transmitter turns on. First signals should be transmitted shortly after 1520Z. Please send your reception reports to the amsat-bb(a)amsat.org . Title your email - ARISSat-1 reception report Alaska and the western US should get a good pass around 1620Z. The eastern US will have to wait until around 0416Z on the 4th to hear the satellite. 73, Gould, WA4SXM

ARISsat-1 reception in New England

Did anyone in New England (or other locations in the same general area) receive ARISsat-1's VHF test messages on the ~0230EDT (0630Z) pass? I got nothing at all using an HT connected to a 2M eggbeater. I usually receive the ISS fine with this, but nothing at all from ARISsat-1. Of course I know it was operating generally since there were lots of reception reports. However, I did not happen to see any around that time/location. It was not the highest pass, but I could not stay up any later! Hoping for better luck in a few days at high power. Thanks, 73 de W2BFJ, Burns

ARISSat-1/Kedr weekend test successful!

Reception reports of the ARISSat-1/Kedr signals flooded in from around the world to the arissat1 mailbox during the 20 hour test period last weekend. Some of the areas reporting were: South Africa, Japan, Hawaii, Sweden, Europe, China, Brazil, Barbados, Czech Republic, United States and Ukraine. In all over 50 reports from 20 different countries were received. The battery voltage went from 30.09 V to 26.3 V during the test. On to Wednesday! 73, Gould, WA4SXM

*Hi Guys & Gals, I heard ARISSSat-1 here in ENY (Hudson Vly.) @ 1130 UTC , &the st thing I heard was a tome burst (Like on 2M repeaters) , & then some voice announcement, & this was on 145.95 MHz. w/ an S-1 or 2 signal. the rig used was a Kenwood TS-2000 w/ a Horizontilly polerized "Aqualo" Antenna (Clamped to the Chimmy of Moms House (abt.30 ft. up!, (ant.) My congrats to AMSAT,ETC, for a Job WELL Done, & a long time coming!! Was wondering if the "AMSAT weekend Symposium" is going to be webcasted (Or on Echolink)? 73,Stu (WA2BSS) *
