I thank Allen, N5AFV, for the inspiration to try this. Allen lives about 5 or 6 miles south of me so he had at least 5 seconds longer windows than I did :-) The mutual windows Luis and I had were about 40 seconds, but the ground gain on VHF at the horizon helps a lot and made these below-1-degree contacts possible. I don't think we could stretch it any more given the geography and inclination of AO-7, but somebody living further to the East and North (LA, MS, GA, NFL) might have a window that would allow Luis to reach and beat the world record on AO-7. If you have a good 2m setup and can put 100 W ERP on 432 MHz, give it a try. He is patient, as it took us about 6 attempts to get it right (and I got a 70 cm amp up in the attic). 73, Jerry, K5OE ----original message--- I TNX Jerry (K5EO) for 2 QSOs on CW on AO7 Mode B, done July 28, at 23.23Z (Orbit 67958) and July 30, at 23.16Z (Orbit 67983). We get covered 7650 km between both QTHs, EL29GR - - FF66TQ. It is my actual longest distance QSO on AO7 (still almost 200 km below the world record). I find vy challenging this type of QSOs and I still hope to receive some proposals for others DX attempts (also QRV on Mode A). >From the east coast of Canada, heard all components of the ARISSAT-1 signal (CW, BPSK, SSTV, FM voice) in the passes beginning at the following times: 05:00, 08:12, 09:50, 11:25Z These were recorded overnight with a FCD using a set LO frequency of 145,910 kHz. This ensured that all telemetry was recorded (but clear of the centre spike), and FM was recorded well, except at the very early part of passes, when it might be expected to be lost in noise anyway (I have an omni antenna). ARISSat 1 over India

Test transmission Signals from ARISSat 1 was heard over India during 05:30 pass (70 deg Ele over Bangalore). The following are the stations from Bangalore monitored the signals: VU2WMY Mani VU2RMS Ramesh VU2GUR Guru VU3SXE Sandeep During the ten minute pass, the voice telemetry message, YL voice identification message, pass word, Male voice message in Russian and the SSTV signals were heard. The consolidated report is that: the signals on 437.550 was very strong with scale readings 5/6. Was able to record the entire pass. ARISSat-1/KEDR is a cooperative effort between AMSAT, ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station,) RSC-Energia (The Russian Space Agency) and NASA. The design, development and construction of the satellite was done by AMSAT volunteers. Original plans called for the satellite to be housed inside an old Russian spacesuit, but when the suit became unavailable, a spaceframe was developed to house the radio equipment and solar panels. The new satellite was named ARISSat-1/KEDR. Another name for the spacecraft is RadioSkaf-V. The transmitted callsign will be RS01S. The mission was specifically designed as an education-based satellite. Some of its broadcast features include a voice identification, voice, digital and morse code telemetry, stored image and on-board camera transmissions via Slow Scan TV and digital telemetry from a Russian science experiment that will measure vacuum in earth's lower atmo- sphere. Other aspects of the mission include CW (Morse code) and voice message contests to interest students in participating along with stored images submitted by students all over the world as part of its payload. 145.950 MHz FM Downlink ----------------------- FM transmissions will cycle between a voice ID as RS01S, select tele- metry values, 24 international greeting messages in 15 languages and SSTV images. One of the messages will be a conversation between Yuri Gagarin and ground control. If you successfully receive the SSTV transmissions, you are invited to upload your picture to to the ARISS SSTV Gallery: http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ariss/SSTV/ 435 MHz - 145 MHz Linear Transponder ------------------------------------ The linear transponder will operate in Mode U/V (70 cm Up, 2m Down). It is an 16 KHz wide inverting passband and the convention will be to TX LSB on the 435 MHz uplink and RX USB on the 145 MHz downlink. This mode is designed to work with low power transmitters and omni antenna. 145.919 MHz/145.939 MHz CW Beacons ---------------------------------- The CW transmissions will be callsign ID RS01S, select telemetry, and callsigns of people actively involved with the ARISS program. 145.920 MHz SSB BPSK-1000 Telemetry ----------------------------------- The BPSK transmissions will feature a new 1kBPSK protocol developed by Phil Karn, KA9Q to be readable in low signal level conditions. The BPSK data will transmit satellite telemetry. When the CW2 beacon on 145.919 MHz is active this indicates that the BPSK-1000 format is being transmitted. If the CW1 beacon on 145.939 MHz is active this indicates the backup of BPSK-400 format is being transmitted. AMSAT needs your telemetry from ARISSat-1/KEDR. A CW/SSB receiver will also receive the CW beacons on 145.919 MHz or 145.939 MHz and the signals on the linear transponder passband between 145.922 to 145.938 MHz. To take advantage of the full bandwidth of the downlink for SSTV, CW Decoding, BPSK Decoding you'll need to add a few things: + You'll need an audio patch cable from your receiver to your computer soundcard audio input. If you are already on the air with other amateur radio soundcard applications then you are ready with the hardware to receive, decode, and display the SSTV, BPSK-1000 or BPSK-400 downlinks. + You'll need SSTV software (refer to the SSTV news item) + You'll need the ARISSatTLM software to decode the BPSK telemetry. Depending on your equipment you may need to fabricate an audio patch to the computer soundcard input from both your 2 meter FM radio and 2 meter SSB radio. An initial "RECEIVE ONLY" configuration is easily done consisting of an audio patch cable between your radio and the soundcard. The ARISSat-1/KEDR team testing the software noted that a minimal set up consisting of an audio cable from the speaker or headphone out- put from the radio to the line (or mic) input on your PC sound card was successful. If your rig has a 'Line Out' audio connection this can be run to the soundcard 'Line In' connection. Many amateur radio "digital modes" articles, web pages, and books also discuss the more complex requirements to interface your trans- mitter to the soundcard and to control the push-to-talk functions. The ARISSatTLM software can decode BPSK signals in two modes: + Playback and decode a recorded file (even if you do not have a 2 meter SSB receiver you can experiment with the software and test file to learn about telemetry decoding and display!) + Live, off-the-air capture Playback and Decode a Recorded File ----------------------------------- ARISSatTLM requires the recorded data to be in the WAV format. Compression formats such as MP3 are not suitable and will not decode and display correctly. Although .WAV files are notably large, usually several megabytes, they capture all of the bits of the signal. Compressed file formats sound OK to the human ear but save file space by eliminating bits from the recorded stream. You need to capture and record as many of the downlink bits as possible. An occasional noise burst or momentary fade is handled by the Forward Error Correction capability of the ARISSatTLM software. Download the BPSK Test File --------------------------- A link to a BPSK test file suitable for operation with the current release of ARISSatTLM software will be released soon to http://www.arissattlm.org. NOTE: Some earlier BPSK test recordings that are on the internet will not work because they were created with earlier versions of the satellite's onboard software (the satellite software and ARISSatTLM are a "matched pair"). 1. Start the ARISSatTLM program on your computer. 2. Click the start button in the lower left of the Tuning Indicator window. 3. In the ARISSatTLM Version 0.50 Window select: File --> Open WAVE file. Select the ARISSatTLM test file you previously downloaded. 4. The Tuning Indicator window will show the "CW Bump" at proper location (note the "Put CW signal here" indicator). 5. The Morse Code Decoder will decode and stream the CW message. 6. The ARISSatTLM Telemetry as Text window will decode and display data. 7. The ARISSatTLM window will display the received data as received. 8. The display will stop when the end of file is reached. Live Off The Air Telemetry Capture and Display ---------------------------------------------- The ARISSat-1 BPSK-1000 downlink is transmitted in SSB mode on 145.920 MHz. When the CW2 beacon on 145.919 MHz is active this indicates that the BPSK-1000 format is being transmitted. If the CW1 beacon on 145.939 MHz is active this indicates the backup of BPSK-400 format is being transmitted. Transmitting at 100 mW, both BPSK rates include Forward Error Correction (FEC) and it is expected that modest quarter-wave antennas with low-loss coaxial cable will provide sufficient signal strength for decoding and display by the ARISSatTLM software. BPSK-1000 sounds like a "shusssch" with a higher pitch than the 400 bps growl. It is difficult to tune by ear. The BPSK beacon is centered 1 kHz above the CW2 beacon so that the CW beacon sits in the lower spectral null of the BPSK signal, i.e., in a narrow spot where there's no BPSK signal power. If you put your receiver in USB mode and tune the CW beacon so it comes out at an audio frequency of 500 Hz, this will automa- tically center the BPSK signal in a conventional SSB filter extending from 300-2700 Hz. The Tuning Indicator window helps you tune the signal correctly. Follow the recommendations in the ARISSatTLM Quick Start Guide for tuning and decoding the BPSK telemetry data. Once you are tuned in correctly (and adjust for doppler shift) you will be able to decode the BPSK-1000 signal. You will also be able to copy the CW2 beacon text in the Morse Code Decoder window. Here are some pointers to help you get your station ready to receive and dis- play the SSTV pictures transmitted by ARISSat-1. One fun feature is that there are four SSTV cameras mounted on the spacecraft. On photos of ARISSat-1 you may have noticed black brackets on the outside of the spacecraft. These hold the mirrors that reflect the light onto the lens of the cameras. The software- defined-transponder will use the image data from the cameras to generate the SSTV downlink. ARISSat's software will sequentially select a new or stored image from one the four cameras. There are two pre-recorded images as part of the sequence. The camera that took the the picture can be identified by the color of the call sign in the upper left of the SSTV image. The SSTV image will be sent down as FM audio SSTV in Robot 36 format on 145.950 MHz about every 140 seconds. The RF downlink power on the 145.950 MHz FM downlink will be 250mW which is predicted to provide a link margin around 6 dB on an HT with a 'big whip' when the satellite is at 15 degrees elevation. This should be sufficient to receive SSTV pictures although you may need to orient the whip to line up the antenna polarization. ARISSat-1 is not stabilized so the antenna orientation is unpredict- able and a certain amount of fading will happen. The receiving link margin may be improved with a handheld beam such as an "Arrow", "Elk", or "Cheap Yagi" antenna. When running your SSTV software just adjust the sound card audio gain slider and/or radio volume control so that the SSTV signal is within the center part of the bar. Operation from FM27 tomorrow

Hello all, I'm new to satellite and I'm going to try my first QSOs on AO-27 during it's daylight passes. Last weekend I listened to AO-27 on my tower mounted 432 beam but for this I'll be setting up an arrow antenna on a tripod and an ft-736r. I've had the arrow for years but never got around to actually using it for satellite. Hope to see you on AO-27 tomorrow and possibly Sunday as well if I'm successful. ARISSat-1 test

The ARISSat-1/Kedr transmission test is scheduled to begin at 1915Z. There is a 15 minute transmission delay, so don't expect to receive any signals until 1930Z. The satellite transmissions will be in low power mode, which means that there are no transmissions for 2 minutes (seems like a long time when you are listening for a signal) and about 45 seconds On, then off again for 2 minutes. So, during an average 8 minute pass you will probably only hear 2-3 transmissions periods. FM at 145.95 MHz, CW at 145.919 MHz, BPSK at 145.920 MHz. Yaesu FT-726

The Yaesu FT-726 was a decent sat rig back in the day. Cons: Low power output ( only ten watts ) and limited frequency coverage on UHF ( either 430-440 or 440-450 but not the full range ) I think it lacked the tracking VFOs implemented in the FT-736 which was a real nice feature. Also no CAT control with this rig which was what motivated me to trade up to a pair of Icom twins ( IC-271 and IC-471 ). For the money though, it would be hard to balk. 73, Bob W1ICW

FT726 opinions

I am at a hamfest this weekend where there is a FT726R for sale in decent condition. It has the stock 2m module, and the HF (15, 12, 10M0 as well as a tone encoder (with dip switches) installed. The UHF module was pulled from it, and the owner didn't know if it has the satellite board or not, but I am guessing that it probably does given the module lineup where it would have covered Mode A, T, J and B when it had the UHF module in it. They are asking $200 for it which seems like a great price, and it even has the original service manual with it. Are these still pretty good satellite rigs? Is there much of a chance of finding a 430-440mhz module for it? I already have a 2m rig as well as a HF rig, but would be nice to have a backup for each. Are there many age related issues going wrong with the 726? 73s John AA5JG

Preparations for the spacewalk continues :: 29/07/2011 On the International Space Station (ISS) continued preparations for the spacewalk from the Russian program, which is scheduled for August 3. Today the crew will prepare a piece on-board laser communication terminal to install it on the outer surface of the module "Zvezda", then hold a training session to test the emergency move out of the bay, "Pierce" in the transitional compartment module "Zvezda", which can be used as a backup airlock. In accordance with the plan of preparation for the exit at the end of the day the astronauts raskonserviruyut cargo ship "Progress M-10M", docked to the bay, "Pierce", closed passageways and check their integrity. July 29, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-210.01 AMSAT NEWS SERVICE SPECIAL BULLETIN ANS-210 In this Special Bulletin: * ARISSat-1/KEDR Test Transmissions Planned From ISS July 30-31 Test transmissions from ARISSat-1/KEDR are scheduled to begin at 19:15 UTC on July 30 and then continue until 1430 UTC on July 31. The satellite will be connected to an external antenna mounted on the ISS during testing. During the test ARISSat-1/KEDR will be in LOW power mode, this means that it will transmit about 40 seconds and then shut down for 2 minutes and then transmit for again for 40 seconds. During the ISS test there will not be an antenna connected to the ARISSat-1/KEDR UHF port. The 435 MHz - 145 MHz Linear Transponder will not be active during the test period. This transponder will be active once ARISSat-1/KEDR is deployed. FM VOICE DOWNLINK 145.950 MHZ ----------------------------- To listen for ARISSat-1/KEDR signals, FM receivers should be tuned to 145.950 MHz. Even though the satellite will only have an output of 250 mW on 2 meters, a standard FM handy talkie equipped with a quarter-wave whip antenna should be able to receive the voice ID, voice telemetry and greeting messages as the craft passes overhead. Those planning to monitor voice broadcasts from ARISSat-1/KEDR during the July 30 - 31 test are requested to make note of the telemetry battery voltage values and UTC time, and then submit their records by e-mail to: julytest(a)arissat1.org. FM SSTV DOWNLINK 145.950 MHZ ---------------------------- SSTV transmissions are included in the cycling FM downlink with station identification RS01S, voice messages, and spoken telemetry. ND9M/P: DM66 and Heading Home

Cori and I are leaving the Phoenix area this morning (Friday) and will head up through northeastern Arizona and into New Mexico. We'll get to DM66 either tonight or tomorrow morning sometime and should be QRV there for a few passes on both FM and SSB birds. Hopefully APRS coverage (ND9M-7) will continue to give good results while enroute. If anyone needs some Arizona and New Mexico counties on HF, I'll be running them on both CW and SSB on 14056.5 and 14336 kc respectively. Our route toward DM66 will take us through Maricopa, Gila, Graham, Greenlee, Navajo, and Apache Counties in Arizona, and San Juan and Rio Arriba Counties in New Mexico. From what I have gathered, it appears that if Yuri does receive any he hands them off to Eugene. I would direct all future requests to Eugene. I did hear from Eugene that they had decided to send all cards unsolicited, but I would still send a request with one QSL card, a spreadsheet with all QSOs listed, and $2/IRC for a return to help defray costs. Email was extremely beneficial during this process. Both Yuri and Eugene’s email addresses on QRZ.com are correct. If you do send an email, and do not receive a response within a couple days, resend it. I had to resend mine once before it made it to Eugene. Requesting read-receipts are also helpful for ensuring your email made it if it does not require a response from them. I would not recommend sending several repetitive emails to either of them. I would send one when you send your request and ask them to email you when they receive it. Eugene was very good at letting me know when he received mine. He will then let you know once he sends the return, and then you can email him and confirm once you receive it. If anyone has questions, feel free to email me. As I said, just be patient during this process as it may take a while. I was missing 5 grids/QSOs, so I forwarded the list to Eugene, UX0FY, and he forwarded them onto Yuri. I received an email from Yuri last night and he said that he would have the additional card in the mail, and he also said as a side note that he would be back out in the water this October. We can all look forward to that! For those of you that have sent cards to either Yuri or his manager via direct, I would not be surprised if it took a month to get there. It took about 1 month for my letter to get to Eugene, and then it took another 2 weeks for his return to get to me, so be patient. For those of you that are waiting to send your requests, I would go ahead and pack your request up now. The choice is really up to you as far as if you want to send it to Yuri or his manager. I did hear from Eugene that they had decided to send all cards unsolicited, but I would still send a request with one QSL card, a spreadsheet with all QSOs listed, and $2/IRC for a return to help defray costs. Email was extremely beneficial during this process. Both Yuri and Eugene’s email addresses on QRZ.com are correct. If you do send an email, and do not receive a response within a couple days, resend it. I had to resend mine once before it made it to Eugene. Requesting read-receipts are also helpful for ensuring your email made it if it does not require a response from them. I would not recommend sending several repetitive emails to either of them. I would send one when you send your request and ask them to email you when they receive it. Eugene was very good at letting me know when he received mine. He will then let you know once he sends the return, and then you can email him and confirm once you receive it. If anyone has questions, feel free to email me. As I said, just be patient during this process as it may take a while. Pin assignments on a stereo mic input?

One more for today... I am using a stereo digital recorder for logging. It has a stereo 3.5mm mic socket. I am using a "attenuating" patch cable from the HT audio into a "stereo splitter" plugged into the mic input (it has a stereo plug, and two mono sockets --- tip and base, and ring and base). The other side of the splitter has a mic. So the intent it to put the HT into one channel, and the external mic (recording me) into the other channel, when recording. I am only hearing the HT audio on playback. I have a feeling that the plug "base" connection is not ground -- it is on the ring or tip. Any one have or know the signal assignment on a recorder mic jack? base, ring , and tip? I would assume it would also match the assignment of the mic input of a PC (if you know that)? Bill W1PA

Our first method of pass determination was with a home made plotter...I still have my original one, and think it is on my website: http://cid-1973adc8c1d3207c.skydrive.live.com/summary.aspx?sa=140581470 Nothing but a circular plot of the world with a curved arc that represented the path of the satellite....then the time in minutes of the pass marked off to determine AZ/EL. QST had a listing of pass times for the month, very simple, and as you remember we used to have 4,5,6 in a round table permitting about 20 second bites....We gabbed mostly about what we had just homebrewed, and continue the chat on the next pass, or maybe the NEXT DAY!! Ah, yes... the Oscarlocator. Why I remember back in the day when... I'll spare you all, except to say that if I recall correctly, once the correct overlay was selected, we would take nothing more than two pieces of data, the time of an ascending equator crossing (EQX abbreviation comes to mind), and the longitude of that crossing, then just extrapolate it out for other times. Seems like the orbit calendars that were printed in the magazines listed a half dozen or so orbits (a month?). From that minimal info you could "run" your predictions out fairly accurately for a good while. Seems like AO-10, being HEO, had multiple overlays, no? or at least one very squiggly looking one. Been a while. There were rumors that guys were beginning to use computers to predict passes, and to provide realtime updates. But who would spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, have to input all of those Keplerian elements, when the Oscarlocator will give you the same info? Unthinkable. A passing fancy. :-) Rich, N8UX.

Bill, For the MM expedition I went on this past April, I just created a custom QSL card in Windows Paint (don't laugh, my wife did and offered to do it in PhotoShop) from various cut-and-paste scans, including some pictures from the trip. I then waited for a deal from Kodak online and ordered 200 4x6 prints at 6 cents each. It was about $16 delivered in 4 days. Too easy. You have to use business-size envelopes for the slightly bigger size, but not a deal breaker. Lots of places offere even lower rates in bulk, including Target, CVS, and Wal-mart. AO-51 is indeed back to resetting each orbit. Keep an eye on http://oscar.dcarr.org/ to see the current status. I'm going to work on finding a power setting that might let us get through eclipses without crashing. It would be very helpful to have plenty of reports on that page to keep tabs on the bird. Hi! I am planning a day-trip to northern Arizona on Saturday, 30 July. My plan is to operate on the DM35/DM45 grid boundary west of Flagstaff (Coconino County) in the afternoon and early evening, probably starting with the AO-27 pass just after 2000 UTC. I will work FM and SSB satellites from up there. AO-7 in mode A may even be an option, if the weather isn't turning bad late in the day. Weather predictions are calling for scattered thunderstorms in the Flagstaff area on Saturday, so that might get in the way. On my way to the DM35/DM45 boundary, I may stop at the DM34/DM44 boundary between Phoenix and Flagstaff for the morning VO-52 passes. I doubt I will wake up early enough to drive all the way to the DM35/DM45 in time for the VO-52 passes, but the DM34/DM44 boundary is a possibility. Since I was just at DM34 a couple of weeks ago and at DM44 in early June, the DM34/DM44 boundary isn't the primary goal of this day-trip - just another chance to put those two rarely-heard grids on the air on my way north. The worst-case scenario for the VO-52 passes could be simply working them from DM33/DM43 here in Phoenix, and then making the drive directly to the DM35/DM45 boundary in time for that AO-27 pass in the early afternoon. While I am driving around northern Arizona on Saturday, I will have APRS running on my TH-D72A as WD9EWK-9. APRS coverage is good in much of northern Arizona, although I don't know how well it will be at the DM35/DM45 boundary itself. It was OK at my Field Day site last month, in a picnic ground just east of the boundary that is on slightly higher ground. Among other places online, http://aprs.fi/wd9ewk-9 should show my travels on Saturday. As with my other trips, I'm happy to send out QSL cards to confirm any QSOs made at DM35/DM45 and - if I stop there - DM34/DM44. Just send me an e-mail with the QSO details. Hello I just recently installed the optional UT-106 AF DSP noise reducer in my 910. It works better than I anticipated. On weak noisy AO-7 I can hear signals that before were almost uncopyable. July 28, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-209.01 ANS-208 In this Special Bulletin: * Deployment of ARISSat-1/KEDR Satellite Expected August 3 * ARISSat-1/KEDR Test Transmissions Planned From ISS July 30-31 SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND (AMSAT News Service) After a postponed deployment in February from the International Space Station (ISS), the ARISSat-1/KEDR amateur radio satellite is expected to begin its mission on August 3, 2011. This was the word received from Energia official, Sergey Samburov during an ARISS teleconference on July 19. Deployment of the craft is planned during EVA-29. NASA TV will cover the EVA live starting at 1400 GMT on August 3. 1430: Hatch Open 1446: Egress ARISSat-1 and secure to airlock ladder 1452: Remove solar panel covers 1507: Translate to deploy site, activate PWR, TIMER1 and TIMER2 switches, verify LEDs on, and deploy (Internet streaming: http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html) ARISSat-1/KEDR is a satellite designed and built by amateur radio operators to specifically interest students in scientific and tech- nological careers. Through the use of ham radio equipment, students and teachers should be able to access and utilize the satellite from a classroom environment with minimal set up. ARISSat-1/KEDR is a cooperative effort between AMSAT, ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station,) RSC-Energia (The Russian Space Agency) and NASA. The design, development and construction of the satellite was done by AMSAT volunteers. Original plans called for the satellite to be housed inside an old Russian spacesuit, but when the suit became unavailable, a spaceframe was developed to house the radio equipment and solar panels. The new satellite was named ARISSat-1/KEDR. Another name for the spacecraft is RadioSkaf-V. The transmitted callsign will be RS01S. The mission was specifically designed as an education-based satellite. Some of its broadcast features include a voice identification, voice, digital and morse code telemetry, stored image and on-board camera transmissions via Slow Scan TV and digital telemetry from a Russian science experiment that will measure vacuum in earth's lower atmo- sphere. Other aspects of the mission include CW (Morse code) and voice message contests to interest students in participating along with stored images submitted by students all over the world as part of its payload. ARISSat-1/KEDR Test Transmissions Planned From ISS July 30-31 Test transmissions from ARISSat-1/KEDR are scheduled to begin four days prior to deployment at 19:15 UTC on July 30 and then continue until 1430 UTC on July 31. The satellite will be connected to an external antenna mounted on the ISS during testing. During the test ARISSat-1/KEDR will be in LOW power mode, this means that it will transmit about 40 seconds and then shut down for 2 minutes and then transmit for again for 40 seconds. To listen for ARISSat-1/KEDR signals, FM receivers should be tuned to 145.950 MHz. Even though the satellite will only have an output of 250 mW on 2 meters, a standard FM handy talkie equipped with a quarter-wave whip antenna should be able to receive the voice ID, voice telemetry and greeting messages as the craft passes overhead. SSTV transmissions may also be demodulated and viewed using a free downloadable program such as MMSSTV that is available at: http://mmhamsoft.amateur-radio.ca/pages/mmsstv.php. Those planning to monitor voice broadcasts from ARISSat-1/KEDR during the July 30 - 31 test are requested to make note of the telemetry battery voltage values and UTC time, and then submit their records by e-mail to: julytest(a)arissat1.org. Digital telemetry will be sent at 145.920 MHz. Given the low duty cycle of the spacecraft, those planning to receive the digital telemetry are encouraged to record the entire signal band using the FunCube dongle or SDR-IQ receivers. Software for demodulating the BPSK-1000 telemetry is available at http://www.arissattlm.org; the software Quick Start Guide is available on the link on the http://www.amsat.org front page. After it is deployed from the International Space Station, ARISSat-1/KEDR is expected to be in orbit for a period of up to six months. ARISSAT Setup File and Norton - Just cut it off...Norton that is!

I posted earlier about Norton detecting a virus in the ARISSat-1 setup file. I guess I was getting excited and moving too fast in anticipation of hearing a signal that I did not fully read the instructions. The ARISSAT-1 quick start guide ( http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/images/fck_images/ARISSatTLM-QuickStart%281%… ) clearly says to cut off any virus software as the .exe may be questioned. I have been a ham for over 50 years and this satellite stuff excites me as much as my first novice contact. Sitting here patiently listening..... 73, James W5AOO

The press-service of Russian Federal Space Agency and the PMU show no "problems" with ARISSat-1-Kedr, and for July 28 - Operations and experiments on the International Space Station July 28, 2011 28 July, the Russian segment of International Space Station is planned to continue work on preparations for the release of the crew into space, including the installation of attachments on their spacesuits, lighting and video cameras, the preparation of a microsatellite "Cedar", as well as the installation of mechanisms to connect the ships "Progress M-10M" and "Progress M-11M," Control mikroekosfery habitat and maintenance of coolant. Should I abandon full doppler correction?

Hi all, I just tried a nice pass on FO-29. I heard K9CIS on CW and W5BK from Texas. In both cases, while I am using full doppler correction with my 9100 and MacDoppler, I suspect they are leaving the transmit frequency fixed as they both changed frequency. K9CIS on CW was quite extreme in the Doppler shift. I know that this is a by-product of me using full doppler to listen to stations that are not, but it seems that the majority of the stations I hear are NOT using flu doppler. I have asked this question before, but it seems to be happening more frequently. Should I abandon full doppler correction? Another less black-and-white step is that if I hear a station moving to adjust my settings so I am not doing full doppler. Has anyone ever taken a survey to see how many satellite users actually use full doppler. Am I assuming more guys use computers and anyone of the multiple ways to do computer control that have ben available for years? Does anyone ever talk about this in AMSAT circles? Sort of like the encouragement one gives to people afraid of LOTW to try it? "Computers in the shack…NEVER!" I exaggerate but it seems that way. Then again, being a computer person and having computer capable rigs I realize I am skewed in my expectations. I know there are guys working with old 271/471 pairs or even the old FT726 out there. Great radios and a simple way to do it, but even they have ways to do full doppler control and they have been out for 20 years.
