Congratulations to Jim, KE4KOL, for achieving Satellite VUCC. This is the most sought after VHF/UHF award in the world and equivalent to the DXCC program for HF & 6 meters. It's one thing to work 100 grids but the work doesn't stop until you have all of the cards in hand (or now LOTW matches). Congratulations also to Rodney, KC0ZHF who moved to Wyoming a while back, for achieving his WAS Satellite Award. Working all 50 states can be a challenge. There's always one or two states that are not active for long periods of time. It takes patience. Congratulations to both of you for your accomplishment! 73, John K8YSE

Any sat will make the distance, but you will not be able to 'Ragchew' on an FM satellite as you are sharing a limited resource.- Only one QSO at a time. Best approach for a chat is a linear transponder which will support several QSOs at once. Try FO-29 or AO-7 Even so, you will be limited to 20 minutes about 6 times a day. W2KGY West Point on AO-51

Those who worked W2KGY on the 2035z pass of AO-51 on 13 June probably had a QSL card confirming the contact in their mailbox a few days later. KJ5HY was the operator and had no trouble hearing everyone who called for a contact. I was going to send for this West Point QSL card but held off remembering that W3ADO at the Naval Academy never seemed to answer QSL card requests, even with an SASE. My card to West Point was in the mail back to them the next day. Check out their qrz.com page for the history behind this station. The callsign dates back to 1937. Interestingly, W2KGY is a Military Recreation Station while W3ADO is a club station not unlike your local radio club. Military Recreation Stations are not eligible for vanity call signs. According to the FCC Rules and Regulations: "A military recreation station license is an amateur service station license granted only to a person who is the license custodian designated by the official in charge of the United States military recreational premises where the station is located. The person need not hold an amateur operator license grant." Thank you to KJ5HY for activating their satellite station. Your service to our Country is very much appreciated. Yaesu G5500 rotor problem

Hi, I brought a G5500 with me to Europe and have it up and running. The elevation rotor is working as it should. The azimuth rotor turns the antenna left and right as it should when the button is pressed, but the readout on the controller is not working. When I turned on the controller, the azimuth meter pinned to the right (i.e., beyond the red 90 degrees mark). I was able to adjust on the back to get the meter unpinned, but the indicator does not move at all when the rotor is activated. Any ideas on what may be wrong? 73, Bill NZ5N/OM3BD

HI satellite contact

I have been working toward getting worked all states over the satellites. Well i am down to only two states HI and AK. I am working with several people in AK to get that state on the worked list. Now i need some help with HI. Is anyone in HI on any of the satellites? I am in Iowa so it will probably have to be over FO-29 or AO-7. If anyone can Help me with this i would greatly appreciate it. Hello everyone, Is there a program or script that could automate the creation of a custom keplerian element list that includes satelites that i´m only interested in, from data from either either spacetrack or celestrack? My idea is to create something similar to the list that AMSAT publishes but more specific to my needs, meaning that there are some sats in there that I don´t care about. ISS orbit raised, again

According to Roscosmos, they have raised the orbit again by 6.8 km. They are up to about 382 km. The SO-67 command station has agreed to set the following start times for 15 minute activations over North America for Field Day. Activations are -planned-, and are dependent on scheduling and battery state. Remember both ARRL and AMSAT Field Day rules limit QSOs to one per FM repeater/satellite. Even if you are not submitting a log, please adhere to this procedure. 25JUN2011 1835 2255 26JUN2011 0030 0200 0335 0515 0645 1155 1335 1510 1640 1815 Uplink is 145.875, no tone, and Narrow FM if possible. Better work that HF DX while you can!

If this is true, the last thing I am worried about is DX, I saw a tv show that talked about the mini ice age in the 1800's and they mentioned the cause was a lack of solar activity. Time to be cutting a lot of wood and buying more blankets if this is going to go on for 2 decades. The show had to be on Discovery or History channel. I haven't googled this(yet), but there has to be a trend and when did the decline start(sunspots)?

I use these programs to customize a list of satellites with their current tracking data. So I have confirmed HRD is like 23 minutes ahead of Amsat, I got a good Digi Qso on the last pass... I just dont see why Amsat shows good info but not on there keps download. Probly will get fixed soon, just makin sure HRD users were on the same page... Kevin KF7MYK

No problem Kevin. I dont rely on HRD sat tracker much but after seeing your message on the board I did some investigating to see what the problem actually was. My HRD sat tracking was lagging like yours for the ISS, I closed it and tried running as administrator and uploading keps and nothing changed. By chance I changed my keps on satpc32 from celestrak to amsat and the ISS was predicted to be the same position as HRD. That is how I came across the remedy for HRD, but when I eliminated the amsat site for keps downloads, all it showed was the moon no matter what sat I selected, so I shut down sat tracker and restarted and everything worked like it should. And before Alan asks again, my callsign is AB9RU, and thanks again Alan for your satpc32 doppler file, and Kevin good luck hunting packet QSO's on the ISS digi

The amateur payload can run up to 4w's of power so could easily be used digital mobile, no frequency has been release as yet, but I have asked if it could be made available! From HRD Satellite Tracking, click Satellite From the window that opens, click the Kepler Data tab From it's gidgets, click Add File From the box that pops up, select your elements file. Tick the Enable box for that file and untick all others. Click Download Now. It should update your definitions from the kepler file. Attached is my current file. Hi All, This is a good thing to consider whether it's for preamps or anything else such as a tower-mounted remote co-ax switch. I had one meter, think it was an MFJ-815, that did not have a DC path through it. My co-ax switch didn't work anymore ! Pre-amps with SWR meter

Installing my new UHF/VHF SSB preamps tonight. I have FT-847 to send 12VDC to them. I currently have an SWR meter between the 847 and the preamps. Can I feed power through the SWR meter safely? The SWR meter is an SX-1000 by Diamond. Thanks, Mike kb8zgl

I know they had to boost the ISS and I did see that post but is there any way to get HRD going right? CALIPSO - 3 Billion Photos So Far

Five-year-old satellite CALIPSO took its 3 billionth image June 2 - the image showe a vertical look at the massive smoke plume from the wildfires in Arizona. I know everyone will be saddened to hear that Elizabeth Clark has passed away after a long illness. My heart is breaking for Tom especially but all of us in the AMSAT family as well will miss her. Elizabeth was one of the most kind-hearted souls I've met and treated me more like a son than a friend. In fact, since I left high school, I spent more nights as a guest of the Clarks than I have with my own mother. I will miss her terribly. She rests with the angels now. Bob -- Robert W. I just arrived in Europe with a G5500 and was successfully able to convert the controller to 220v simply by moving the wire connected to pin 2 on the KT-30 transformer to pin 3. That's all it takes. If EA4CYG's wire is on pin 3, I would guess that someone has already converted it to 220v operation (perhaps without changing the plug to a European connector?). To be sure that you connect to the correct pin, measure the resistance with an ohm meter between pins 0 and 2 and then 0 and 3. Since that time he has given me 6 more new grids and operated from many others. Chris didn't have a portable setup to take on the road so he purchased an inverter so he could run his 120vac radio in the car! So for the operator with a single FT-817ND - understanding there will be a learning curve in regards to doppler, doing the "Arrow wave" entertaining and/or frightening the neighbors, is AO-7 do-able or just not a really good idea? Won't be ticked off if the answer is "probably best not to try". Honest! :) I'm guessing it'll take a lot of programming memory channels to stay on track? 73! You know here are some people trying to do an experiment of whatever kind, probably spent alot of time and money on the project and I think that is great. I was tracking it and was waiting for it to get above the Sierra's and try to get the downlink. Would have been neat. BUT here we have people saying this and that and complaining... What a bunch of spoil sports, I mean really who cares. Like it was really gonna disrupt the whole APRS system, and if it did for a little while WHO CARES, GIVE THE GUYS A BREAK!!! SSB Operation on the Satellites

Hi Satelliters, Might cause some flames with this but here goes: With a good few years of operating on the SSB sats, AO's-10,13,40, RS10, FO-20,FO-29 and 98 countries confirmed I can agree totally with the "one true rule" in theory. When stations at each end of the QSO use the method it works flawlessly, I have done it with QSO partners using Fod track and with Instantrak computer Doppler correction, but there is the problem. Many of the stations that you want to work will be using manual tuning methods, so as you maintain your frequencies at the satellite, according to the rule, your QSO partner will have to search for you. Then when its your turn to transmit he will have to search for you. The practical solution that I and I believe most of the ops. I have worked seem to use is to have short overs and to adjust frequencies the TX to try and keep the QSO in a fixed spot on the receiver. Following the other "often recommended" method of adjusting the higher frequency irrespective of its function, up link or down link, cause QSO's to drift across the pass band causing problems for other users. The other point worth making for newcomers to the SSB birds is to start on the easy passes/satellites first to get the knack of manual tuning. For example, try VO-52 with its 2m downlink, and to pick low elevation passes where the rate of change of frequency due to Doppler shift is less. Don't expect to get it right with near overhead passes of FO-29 until you have delevop your skills. We were all beginners once so don't be afraid to have a go and make a few mistakes. I am pleased to say that in my experience the SSB satellites have a great user community who maintain high operating standard and welcome new ops. I am new to the satellites. Got to where I can hear my downlink if the bird is higher than 15 degrees. My question is about handling the doppler shift. If you do not have a sat program automatically correcting you rig frequency, what is the most common or preffered technique? 1 - Hold the TX steady and adj the RX for doppler or 2- Hold the RX steady and adjust the TX for doppler? Someone that has info to contribute, transmits and everyone copies it. With one transmission, everyone in the net is updated, a very efficient 2-way system. What is frustrating to see on APRS is so little USEFUL real-time content of interest to the mobile operator. What the local network should provide to the front panel of your radio when you are driving are these things (and their location): Frequency of the locally recommended voice repeater (and TONE) Frequency of local IRLP/Echolink or other asset Local weather Any NETS in progress Any hamfest coming up in the next 2 weeks ANY other ham activity in progress Any incoming messages from your friends See www.aprs.org/localinfo.html In addition, of course, you see all the other APRS mobiles nearby, and if one is within direct SIMPLEX range, you can hear a "Voice Alert Beep" letting you know he is looking for a contact. In addition to the range and direction to the satellite, we used to see the instantaneous uplink and downlink and Doppler. This was very handy for handheld satellite operation. After over a decade, the excitement wore off, and now we have too many lights-on-nobody-home type operations. Hi Group, Does anyone here know the ISS QSL card requirements for digipeating through RS0ISS-4? Obviously it is possible to get a QSL card from the other amateur radio station on the ground, with whom you have a 2 way packet QSO in a pass. Is there any way to get an ISS QSL card itself, other than by having a two way voice contact with the ISS crew? Not a SWL card for receiving only. I know the ISS fanclub produce a certificate for digipeating through the ISS, but want to find out if ARISS itself does anything similar that doesn't involve leaving a message on the BBS? Hi! I am still getting caught up after my quick trip to eastern Arizona, but I wanted to thank everyone who made QSOs with WD9EWK at the White Mountain Hamfest in Show Low AZ on Saturday morning, followed by QSOs at two other locations after the hamfest Saturday afternoon/evening. It was fun to be up there at the hamfest, and also have the chance to put some of Arizona's rarely-heard grids on the birds for a few hours. The hamfest was at a new location in Show Low, on a college campus along the main street (Deuce of Clubs Avenue) instead of at a high school a few blocks north of this location. A smaller parking lot, with trees all around, but not too many to block satellite signals. Being up at 6500 feet (1981m) elevation made for a very nice morning. I made 23 QSOs on several passes using 2 linear transponders (AO-7, VO-52) and 2 FM satellites (SO-50, SO-67) from grid DM44xf. It was good to hear Allen N5AFV operating as KK5W from Galveston Island in Texas throughout the morning and into the early afternoon. Thanks to Show Low's Kachina Amateur Radio Club for inviting me, so AMSAT could have a presence at eastern Arizona's only hamfest. As with many hamfests here in Arizona, this was a half-day event. We have lots of these smaller hamfests, instead of having fewer large events that seems to be common in other places. After a quick stop for lunch, I set off for the DM54/DM55 boundary an hour or so northeast of Show Low along I-40. Since I was not going to make it to the spot along I-40 on the grid boundary in time for the 2002 UTC AO-27 pass, I stopped at Holbrook - a town along I-40, about 15 miles (25km) west of the grid-boundary spot. I set up in a parking lot with a great view to the east in grid DM44ww along old US-66 north of I-40, and proceeded to log 11 QSOs on that 7-minute pass. After this pass, I made the short drive over to the spot at the DM54bx/DM55ba grid boundary. This spot is along old US-66 just east of I-40 exit 303 in Navajo County. I wanted to stay there for a few passes, and ended up staying for more than I had originally planned. I worked many passes on several active birds - AO-27, AO-51, SO-50, and SO-67 in FM; AO-7 and VO-52 in SSB; FO-29 in SSB and CW. A total of 65 QSOs were logged here. I had operated from this spot almost 2 years ago, and I don't think DM55 has been on the birds since then. I worked from DM54 last year after the hamfest in Show Low, and I think it had not been heard on the satellites since then. I need to print more QSLs for the DM54/DM55 QSOs, and make new cards for the two locations from earlier on Saturday. I have uploaded all of these QSOs to Logbook of the World as WD9EWK (I do not add anything like "/P" to my call for satellite QSOs from the continental USA). If you would like to receive a QSL card - even if you've received electronic confirmation through LOTW - please e-mail me directly with the QSO details.
