Hi Tim By far the best (in my opinion) is AO-7! It switches between mode A & B at about 2335Z each 24 hours. There are a interesting bunch of "characters" that populate this satellite. As opposed to the FM sats we can actually have a conversation, in fact 3 or more in a round table as people enter and leave the footprint. Check out http://www.planetemily.com/ao7/main.php?PHPSESSID=6dd58a40327b312b8178ae739… and the log to see what mode it's on. Keep in mind AO-7 is six years older that you are, and this fine bucket of bolts is like a timex watch. Follow the guide lines when operating through it. Your quadra filer helix antennas might be a little iffy, however NL7VX uses omni antennas and I can work him (on the east coast) from Seattle fairly good. I have many qsl cards from hams I have made contact with using packet on the ISS . I don't acknowledge a qso unless He acknowledges My call sign in return . What really takes the time from a pass is when someone has mail and doesn't download it from RS0ISS-11 mail box. Can't get to the repeater when it's trying to deliver mail . I find NO-44 active for packet , but doesn't get much traffic . It is very hard to reach at times , but still usuable . I agree also , psk31 would very much limit the contacts made on a pass. I use psk31 on FM and it is very quiet and pleasant to use , but don't think it would make a good digital format for satellite work . Jerry WB5LHD

COMPASS Heard?

Think I heard COMPASS-1 today? Today while listening to the clean tones of CO-65, another very warbly CW signal came up right on top of it. I did a quick scan of all other AMSATS and found that Compass was over at the same time. I notice it is listed as semi-operational. I guess this was one of those Semi's? Or is it on all the time and I can add it to my list of Demo satellites? Bob, WB4APR

Hi All, It's been a few years since I've posted here, but just bought a Yaesu 736R over the weekend and am back to experimenting with the birds. Looking at the AMSAT page, it's sad to see how few birds are operational, including the once stellar AO-51 and also HO-68 (which I never got to work). I did hear VO-52 and the APRS on ISS last night. However, this morning, I tried to activate SO-50 during the 9:07PST pass and I didn't hear anything. Is there a problem with this bird, is it too weak for me to hear, or was there just no activity? I should have been able to hear myself after activating it with the tones on full duplex, but didn't. Vincenzo; While I can't profess to be an expert on the TrakBox, (I just got one and am in process of setting up), I think that you should read the software manual carefully. You have an option of north or south pointing and you can set limits of travel. The difference in travel on yours is that it turns 450 degrees. I don't think the TrakBox can deal with the conversion of the extra 90 degrees wrapping around (Experts weigh in here). But you can program the ADC limits so that it will track 0-360. SO-67 Schedule

It can sometimes be quite difficult to find when SO-67 will be on air. The schedules aren't always posted here, or on the amsatsa website. As an occasional amateur satellite operator, it can be frustrating to not be able to look up when this bird is on air. Those more regular operators probably don't suffer with this problem quite so much. I understand the payload is a secondary one, however if the schedule was kept up to date it would be very helpful :-) There have been several emails on the -bb stating the loose schedule of one week in four for the US, Europe etc. These can be difficult to find, may I suggest that it be put up on either the amsatsa website that is linked to as "schedule information" or on the amsat-na page with a disclaimer that this is a general schedule that isn't always in force for operational reasons. ? One experiment bridged the gap between the two. An experiment conducted by Aztec High School harvested the physical motion of the rocket in flight and converted it into electricity which was then used to power a small electric oven and roast a green chili. While roasting green chilies isn't critical to the future of space flight, the electricity could have other purposes. "What we wanted to see is if you could power something in the rocket just using piezo electrics, just using the own forces of the rocket to generate it's own electricity while flying up into space," said Braden Goimarac, from Aztec High School's "Black Ops" science team. Using LVB tracker with Yaesu G-450A & G-500A rotators??

Hello everyone Is anyone using a LVB tracker interface with a Yaesu G-450A Az and G-500A elev rotators? I know I have to pick up 12V somewhere in one of the control boxes to run the LVB interface. I know that I have to install some relays between the LVB interface and the control boxes that will do the heavy current switching for the motors. My question is how did you pick up the ground for the position pots when there are two different control boxes. I wondering if there could be a problem tying the position pot reference grounds in both boxes together? I haven't really been on the birds much after I went to FP back in 2005 and activated GN17. I had to disassemble the station to take it there and then we moved 5 months later, since then my satellite station has been mothballed. 73, Ian - K8MM

Hi AMSAT-BB: Is it bad form to call the NA1SS during a pass in a vain attempt to make a contact? I am not trying to stalk them (well actually...) but this has always been a dream of mine since I got my Amateur Radio golden ticket. But I am trying to wake up early in the morning when presumably the ISS crew is active and call CQ. Do folks call CQ NA1SS? Its this bad form? I also don't know how to tell if the FM repeater is on (I have read several links on how to make contacts but they are vague, its more or less monitor 145.800Mhz and go from there). 73 -aps (KC2ZSX)

Rotator Yaesu G-5500 and Trakbox

Hi folks, i owned since 1990 the Rotator G-5400B together with the Trakbox. As I have problem with it and as have renewed my antennas, I decided to change the Also the rotator and have bought the Yaesu G-5500. Today I received and set it up to see if it works perfectly before I install it On the roof. I saw a difference between the old and the new control box, in fact the azimuth display of the old one Shows starting from left to right the following scale: 180 - 225 - 270 - 315 - 0 - 45 - 90 - 135 - 180 360 S W N E S While the new one shows starting from left to right the following scale: 0 - 90- 180 - 270 - 360 - 90 N E S W N E Do not know why these difference and sounds so strange to me as I have used For a long time the old one. Continuing with my settings, I have plugged the cable from the new Control box and the Trakbox and as I have as parking 270°, I saw the azimuth needle going to the left and it stops on About 90° E. The needle seem to be on the right position but not on the right side. At this time I'm a bit confused. Anybody can help me to get out of this confusion? Hi Robert, KL7AA has a new ground station which is "parking lot mobile". We deploy it occasionally and will mount it on the roof hopefully this summer. Ops N6SPP, N6PG and myself AL4S are available to qso either on the ground station or by arrow or elk handhelds. Looking forward to a KH6-KL7 sat-qso in the future. I had an issue similar to Mark's, except it was the transmit side of the Tohtsu relay that had the problem. I could receive fine but had high SWR during TX. Aloha Unless someone has set up a strange repeater there is absolutely no doubt AO51 was alive and well as she came out of eclipse moments ago. I was able to hear myself perfectly on the downlink (145.880 up and 435.150 down). Unfortunately, the footprint from here only touched the west coast. Had an Alaska station been on, I am sure there would have been a QSO. The signal was strong the entire pass. (Could I be missing something?). robert, NH7WN Honolulu, HI

Landwehr 70cm preamp device question?

Hello All, I have an old Landwehr preamp that apparently uses the MGF1402 device (does that sound right?). It's not working so I presume it's the GaAsFET. Can the MGF1302 be substituted for the original MGF1402? Or can anybody recommend another device for the 70 cm Landwehr? I need to do something... Thanks in advance! -- Mark L. Hammond [N8MH]

I have the old KR400/500 rotator units to control that I was using ARSWIN for but since I upgraded to 64 bit XP that no longer works and there doesn't appear to be a software upgrade :( So... Question about duplexers/diplexers

I want to use a single coax for three rigs, feeding to three antennas. Rig 1 = 6 meters Rig 2 = 2 meters Rig 3 = 70 cm Each has its own antenna at the remote tower. Question #1: I should use a triplexer at the shack where the three antennas combine to the single coax, and a triplexer at the antenna where the three antennas are located. Correct? Question #2: any recommendations on which is best? I was looking at the Comet CFX5140 Question #3: can I run 12V through it to power my mast-mount preamps at the tower? Hi! Just as I got back from Australia a few days ago and have been back to the office, I will be at another hamfest on Saturday morning. I will be at the White Mountain Hamfest in Show Low, Arizona. The hamfest is at the Show Low campus of Northland Pioneer College along Deuce of Clubs Avenue, hosted by the Kachina Amateur Radio Club. After the hamfest, I may make a short drive to the DM44/DM54 grid boundary very close to Show Low for the afternoon and maybe early evening passes. Depending on when everyone starts shutting down at the hamfest, I may try for a spot north of the hamfest along I-40 and look to operate from the DM54/DM55 boundary (a location I worked from a couple of years ago). Regardless of where I end up for the afternoon, I will return home Saturday evening. As with my other hamfests and road trips, I will be happy to confirm QSOs made with WD9EWK. I found a nice 3-inch ball-bearing radial-thrust bearing for about $35 (brand new). It has a zerk fitting for a grease gun to maintain the lubrication (which at the slow rotation of antennas is almost never). I have an Yaesu GS-050 thrust bearing that has been installed for about 15 years. The thrust bearing turns, but requires a lot of force. I disassembled the thrust bearing to find that the grease is very sticky (think candy apple sticky), and not lubricative (if that is a word). Should I take it to an auto repair shop and ask them to degrease and then lubricate similar to repacking a wheel bearing? What kind of grease should be used? I opened it and a wire is connected through the fuse to the terminal number 3 of the KT-30 transformer and the other wire through the main switch to the terminal number 1 of the KT-30 transformer. AO-51 reports needed, especially from within eclipse

AO-51's computer has been running for over 5 hours now. We have left the satellite in repeater mode 145.88/435.15 for the time being, at over 2 watts. We are very surprised by this development to say the least. Without Whole Orbit Data we are flying a bit blind, so would really like to know what the satellite is doing in eclipse. I'm assuming the transmitter is cutting out, but who knows? Cell 3 is reporting 0.0 volts, so it's clear it has shorted completely. Please, everyone, everywhere, listen to 435.150 the next 24 hours and send your reports to me or to the -bb. Southern hemisphere observations are most very welcome. 73, Drew KO4MA

My XYL and I saw Endeavour and the ISS in close formation at 30 degrees elevation on the 04:50 am pass over Maryland this morning, both objects equally bright and separated by about half the diameter of the full moon. The final separation burn occurred at 04:38 am, and NASA TV announced a separation distance of 13,500 feet ten minutes later at 05:00 am. Dan Schultz N8FGV

The thin, 1-inch-square chips are mounted to the external Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE-8) pallet, exposing them to the harsh conditions of space to see how they hold up and transmit data. Zac Manchester at Cornell University explained that the chips transmit as beacons with 10 milliwatts of RF power at 902 MHz using MSK modu- lation (minimum-shift keying) with a chipping rate of 50 kbps. The Cornell team invites AMSAT satellite operators to collaborate with this experiment to determine conditions in which the low-power signal has been detected on the ground. The Cornell ground station consists of a 18 dBi yagi with a GNU Radio and USRP receiver (http://www.ettus.com/products). A significant challenge is that the MISSE-8 pallet the chips are on is mounted on the anti-nadir side of the space station, facing away from the earth. The team is hoping to be lucky to catch some kind of reflection off the ISS structure. Beyond being able to detect the signal on Earth, decoding the message requires signal processing. The chips all transmit on the same frequency, each with it's own PRN code. The Cornell team uses these codes to differentiate each one, as well as to provide signal proces- sing gain. At Cornell, data is being recorded and post-processed with a standard PC. To track these chip satellites just use the ISS keplerian elements because they are mounted on the space station. Mason Peck, Associate Professor Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University wrote, "Receiving the full sequence of data per se is not of interest, but the mere reception of it (a single digital bit, for us), indicates successful transmission. ARRL ARISS Program Manager Rosalie White, K1STO says there will be two windows of opportunity each year for educators to submit their proposals for an ARISS contact. The first window opened on May 19 and will close on July 15, 2011. NASA's Teaching From Space Office says the new proposal process applies only to US schools at this time. Schools in other countries will continue to follow their ex- isting process. A proposal for an ARISS school contact consists of a comprehensive education plan, of which the ARISS contact is one of many components: + The proposal should integrate NASA education and ARRL content with surrounding education activities, and include creative ways to maximize the reach of the ARISS contact and the experience for students. + The educator must describe the instructional activities and lessons to be engaged in with students as part of the learning and prepara- tion for the ARISS contact. + The proposal should include study topics related to space technology, space exploration or space research, as well as Amateur Radio, radio science and wireless communications technology. May 29, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-149.10 AO-51 Partial Operation Restored AMSAT-NA VP Operations, Drew Glasbrenner, KO4MA reports that partial operation has been restored to AO-51. Because the Integrated Housekeeping (IHU) computer crashes during each eclipse turning AO-51 ON requires a manually sent series of commands from a control station to reload a small housekeeping program stored on the satellite from ROM, then turning the repeater on, setting the modulation level and turning the RF power down. At present, this re-start sequence is being done on afternoon passes over North America when the satellite's solar panels are being illumin- ated by sunlight and it is in range of an available control station. AO-51 is being left enabled after the North American afternoon passes so stations in Asia may hear it active still on the descending morning passes there. The crashes prevent Whole Orbit Data from being collected for analysis on the ground. Analysis of live telemetry indicates that one of the Ni-Cd battery cells has failed. Got through this morning on the ISS using APRS. What frequencies are good for contacting the crew? I have heard of several differentones and seeing how it is always a pretty short pass...Or small footprint rather. I dont know just would like to try the right one. Thanks Kevin KF7MYK
