Yaesu 847 vs. Icom 910

I am finally in the market for a base station radio for satellites. I should mention that I am also planning to install a wire dipole in the backyard for HF work, but convenience shouldn't be the reason to buy/not to buy a radio..... It seems that the Icom 910 and Yaesu 847 are the two main transceivers in base use for satellites. I know some folks are using the Kenwood TS2000, bu i t I understand thatit has a "birdie" that makes operation on a couple FM satellites challenging. I am hoping to work both the linear and fm birds with this transceiver. Is there a BB favorite? Have I just opened up a bad can of worms? I just want to make sure that I am purchasing the proper parts the first time.... Thanks, Zach N4ERZ

I gave had good luck with the AG-25 and AG-35 used with my IC-970A. Except for one incident when I was keyed down and switched the satellite mode switch and zapped the AG-25. Ahhh another AO-40 comment. I used a old and still have in operation an old TS-700A 2M xcvr with the tx disabled. This was, and is my designated S band receiver. Speaking of S band when will AO-51 be back in that mode. pre amp help..

I just sent my ARR pre amp back to ARR for repair for the 3rd time ! (pretty sure I did not tx through it ) What are people using for pre amps. I only see the Mirage as an alternative. Any other choices. I'm kind of disappointed in ARR products. Is there a pre amp that you can tx through preventing accidental frying? Any thoughts appreciated 73, Ted, K7TRK

Since I have a dozen NE334S01, I can repair a few ARR 144 & 432 preamps for others. So here's the deal. You ship to me in a small flat-rate Priority Mail box (cost you $5.20) and include $30 for repair plus return shipping. You can either send a money order or use PayPal for quickest turnaround (a check will have to clear the bank before shipping back). NO VISA/Mastercard/other credit cards (sorry). Typically, priority mail takes 3-5 days to reach me. I will make the repair within 48-hours of receipt. So turnaround could be as little as 8-days or as much as 12 days (not including Sunday or Postal Holidays). I can verify operation (gain) but not able to measure noise figure or sensitivity. I can only warrantee workmanship that the preamp is functional for 30-days. No warrantee for transmitting into the preamp or reversing dc voltage connections or dropping off your tower. I will not accept preamps that have been previously repaired by other than the manufacturer. Replacement of other components beside the Fet are at cost+15% (e.g. bad voltage regulator, broken feedthru, etc.). Not responsible for loss in shipment so include insurance if you desire that. If preamp is unrepairable, only cost $5.20 shipping back to you (balance will be refunded). This offer is good until I run out of current stock of NE334S01 devices. Greetings from the Eastern Edge of the World! My ship is currently midway between Guam and the International Date Line, heading east on a great circle toward southern California. We'll hit the IDL this weekend, which means (for us on the ship) that we'll get to work Saturday twice! It will give us a whole new view of the term "three day weekend", hi. Anyway, from what SatPC32 tells me, I should be able to hit KH6 on AO51 as well as KL7 and the US Left Coast on AO7 starting tomorrow (17 Feb). So far since leaving Diego Garcia on 26 Jan, my sat ops have been mostly on AO51, but I've also been on SO50, AO7, VO52, and FO29. (AO27 wasn't available at those latitudes.) The linear sats haven't been all that productive mainly because of a much lower number of sat ops that have equipment capable of working SSB or CW on those birds. (FM is used on VO52 regularly in south central Asia to get those with FM-only HTs on that sat.) We passed through the islands of YB, 9M, and DU, and then stopped for a couple days at KH2. AO51 got a big workout every day, but it wasn't because of ham activity. There is an extremely heavy non-ham population using 2M rigs for local chit-chat; anyone transmitting on 145.920 at the wrong time wound up hitting the satellite, and there was a lot of them. I enjoyed working the hams in eastern and southeastern Asia throughout my two-week transit, but the non-ham "ops" made it extremely difficult for any hams to make contacts on AO51 when the footprint covered JA and western YB. The QRM that I hear on AO51 when I'm in the US and that's complained about so often on the BB doesn't begin to compare with what I heard over the last couple weeks. The local hams have brought the QRM problem to the attention of their respective national societies, but they haven't had any success yet in reducing the problem. Meanwhile I'm looking forward to working North and South America again. I'm usually on during the afternoon passes, but now that the Americas will be "ahead" of my QTH as far as the clock is concerned, I'll hopefully be QRV for at least some morning passes as well. With luck, I'll also be able to sneak in an AO27 pass or two once we get closer to land. 73 for now, Jim, ND9M / VQ9JC Grid QL91 / GMT +11

Yaesu FT-736R and Ham Radio Deluxe

Hi I have made a PCB that interfaces Ham Radio Deluxe to the Yaesu ft-736r. I have made two videos that are on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/zdz801 its pretty simple. i used a PIC 18F14K50 chip. you connect to HRD using the ft-847 command set. the board translates the 847 cmds to 736r commands. i am looking for someone to help testing. it uses a usb port . if you are interested email me: chuck.zdz80(a)gmail.com i have tested it myself and it seems to work well, actually better than i thought. the lack of freq feedback is not that big a problem. if you use it with the HRD sat tracker it works well. but i need someone else to test it and look for problems i cannot see. thanks chuck n6bil

Nova for Windows question

All: In preparation for Echoes of Apollo event this spring, I'm resurrecting Nova and rotors, etc. Interesting anomaly. Background: My desktop has Nova version 2.1v My laptop (which will be used for the event) has Nova version 2.2b First issue is why are they different; don't remember -- though all was the same. More important: When I launched Nova on the laptop, I had no "views" configured. Which I attributed to a new install following a new hard drive a year or so ago, but now I'm not so sure -- something may be corrupted. Copied the views file from desktop to laptop and most was well. HOWEVER, could not find moon or AO-51. Rebuild data base (IAW help file and FAQ) and found Echo (AO-51), which I can drag into my current view and track. Moon shows up on list of celestial objects, but I'm not allowed to drag it into the tracking list -- get an error message about no keplerian elements available. (Which is no surprise; I think I recall that Nova uses a different algorithm for moon and sun.) Question: What do I have to do to be able to track the moon in Nova for Windows 2.2b? At long last, the IC-9100 received FCC approval last week, so it may finally be hitting the market. I talked to an ICOM rep at the Orlando hamfest on Saturday, and she said they still do not have any in the USA. There are photos on the ICOM website. Still no official word on price, but it won't be cheap, perhaps even more than the $3000 mentioned by Jeff (I've heard speculation close to $4000). I have 2 FT-847s and like them, especially in Europe where I can use it on 70mhz (4 meters). Cons: only 50w out on 2 meters, problematic volume control and power switch, no 1296 mhz option, no internal antenna tuner, no VOX. The TS-2000 has 100w on 2 meters, a 1296 mhz option, VOX, and an HF/50 mhz antenna tuner, but it does have the incurable birdie that inhibits reception on AO-27 and SO-50. Kenwood apparently has no interest in providing a fix. The IC-910 is supposedly the best VHF/UHF radio of the group, but it does not do HF or 6 meters. These are the only current options for a first class all-in-one setup for linear satellites. They are similar in price on the used market, about $900-$1200. Many opt instead for 2 separate radios, such as a pair of IC-7000s, FT-817s, FT-857, FT-897, FT-706 MKII, or a combo of any of these. This is particularly attractive if you already have an all mode rig for 2 meters. The cheapest route may be a pair of FT-817s, if you can live with the small knobs and controls and the 5w out (adequate for the sats with a good antenna, and if you want more you can buy a cheap 30w amp). You can buy these used for under $400 each (the newer ND model is pricier). Software such as SatPC32 or Ham Radio Deluxe controls the 2 radios so that the downlink frequency matches your uplink. Stay away from the older radios that cannot be computer controlled. It is theoretically possible to work the linear sats with a single, non-duplex radio. As the tracking programs are supposed to set transmit frequency automatically to match the spot where your receiver is tuned, it should not be necessary to hear your downlink. I made a few contacts this way with a single IC-7000, but it is not recommended, as the tracking programs are often a bit off with the frequency calculation. There are also some intriguing transverter options but I'm not familiar with those. The first pictures should be available later on, apparently some time around 0800 UTC. The investigators don't know right now what was photographed, so the crater formed from by Deep Impact in 2005 might not show up. If it does, they'll be interested in what, if anything, changed over the years. My comment was an accurate "summary" of what was posted on the Roscosmos PAO site. But it certainly doesn;t necessary reflect reality. I can very easily see how the information could have been misinterpreted ... or mis-stated. I mean, the "batteries" aren't going to give out in two months' time. Can't you see someone stating in a media session, "We're afraid the satellite will decay in two months ... " and that being written up as, "The batteries aren't going to last." The past 72 hours have shown to me that the best "media filtering" - being defined as "receiving info and validating it" is being produced by AMSAT-NA and the ARISSat-1 team, and reflected on their respective Web sites. The Russians didn't think ARISSat-1's batteries would last from Feb 16 to April 12 - April 12 being the anniversary of Gagarin's historic 1961 flight. Kedr to Be Switched on in the ISS on April 12 15.02.2011 "Russian cosmonauts Dmitry Kondratiev and Oleg Skripochka won’t launch small spacecraft Kedr during their spacewalk scheduled for Feb.16, Roscosmos Stats Secretary, Deputy Head Vitaly Davydov told news media. According to him, the idea is to switch on Kedr inside the ISS on April 12, in order to commemorate the jubilee of Yury Gagarin’s mission. Weak batteries of the RF-amateur satellite won’t let it fly and transmit signals until this date, if the satellite is launched on Feb. 16. "Small spacecraft Kedr developed under the RadioSkaf experiment bears the name adopted by Yu.A. Gagarin call sign in his historical flight, namely Kedr. The satellite’s signal will be transmitted at radio amateur frequency of 145.95 MHz. Kedr has radio amateur call sign RS1S. FYI. EG8, CANARY ISLANDS (Special Event). Look for special event station EG8ISS to be on the air between February 12th and March 11th, from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria (AF-004, DIE S-005, WLOTA L 0969). Activity is to celebrate/ publicize the first ARISS (International Space Station) contact with one of the "Institute for Technological Development and Innovation in Communi- cations" (IDeTIC) facilities on campus. The special event station will be on the HF bands, 40-10 meters, using CW, SSB, RTTY,*PSK31* and SSTV. Also, activities are planned for VHF (2m FM local and R7 repeater) and the satellites (AO-27, SO-50, AO-51 and VO-52). There is a special QSL card designed for this event that will be automatically mailed to your QRZ.com address. Please, keep in mind that they aren't highly skilled radio operators, so be patient if there are any pileups. More info is available on the QRZ.com under EG8ISS. ARISSat in it's flight configuration does not have a provision for external power. During ground testing we have a special cable for external power that connects where the battery goes but that cable was not planned to be used on the ISS. There is the capability to remove the battery and recharge it while onboard the ISS. That should happen only once. Hi All, Does anyone here know anything about the Yaesu FTM-350AR (or the 350R)? I keep gazing at it (pretty radio ;-P), but I am having a hard time finding reviews, pros/cons, etc. Maybe someone could shed some light on its APRS capabilities? I see that it is supposedly full duplex – does anyone know if it is truly full duplex? It looks like a pretty sweet radio, I just don’t understand while I can’t find anyone that knows anything about it. Any other information pertaining to it would be highly appreciated. 73! Hi Douglas, I have some recordings but I am not sure they will be of much use. However I thought it might be useful to share my experiences with the telemetry. I monitored the audio downlink on the first two passes and the data downlink on three passes. I used the ARISSATtlm-0.47 software for decoding on the data passes. On the first pass I could not clearly see the CW signal on the tuning indicator so no decode of the CW or data. The next two pass I had good CW decode and could line up the CW signal OK but no decode. After the passes (naturally) I re-read the article in the AMSAT journal and realized the importance of the 48k, 16 bit sample rate. The article claims that the ARISSATtlm configures the sound card to these values but when I checked the sound card was still at my normal 44.1k sample rate. Perhaps the software sets it to 48k and then sets it back to its previous value but I suspect not. I re-sampled my recording at 48k but still no decode. I noticed also that the CW decode from the recording was not as good as the original so perhaps the recording was at fault. To test this re-sampling method I re-sampled the test wave file at 44.1k and confirmed that it would not decode. I then re-sampled this file at 48k and once again it would decode. (i.e. the re-sampling worked OK.) This again perhaps pointed to a problem with the quality of my recording. Some observations. a Make sure the sound card output is set to 48k/16bit. b I noticed that the live telemetry sounded quite different from the test wave file. The data signal was much more obvious. c When running the test file Excel complains that data has been lost from the CSV file because the number of columns exceeded the 256 column limit. (Excel opens OK and all 256 columns contain data) d I notice that when I use the 0.7 software to decode the test file, the software remains active until I close it. As you may know, KySat-1 along with CubeSats from Montana State University and University of Colorado, will be launched into orbit from Vandenburg AFB on February 23 at 0809 UTC. On Wednesday, 9 FEB 11 NASA announced that ISS Russian Segment (RS) EVA28 will be broadcast live on NASA TV, starting at 1245 UTC on Wednesday, 16 FEB 11. Included in the schedule for RS EVA28 posted by NASA was the deployment of ARISSat-1/RadioSkaf-V/Kedr RS EVA 28 is being managed by RSC-Energia, the operating entity of the ISS RS, as well as the Soyuz and Progress vehicles. 2. On Thursday, 10 FEB 11 RSC-Energia finalized plans to perform a preliminary test of ARISSat-1 while inside the ISS to verify that the satellite could transmit following its delivery to the ISS on a Progress resupply vehicle. This was not an event that was previously scheduled. Instructions were sent to the Cosmonauts to give them a test procedure with activation scheduled for that day at 1605 UTC. For this test, the ARISSat-1 VHF antenna port was connected to an RF patch panel inside of the Zvezda Service Module, to provide an RF connection of the satellite to one of the four ARISS external antennas mounted on the aft end of the Service Module. ARISSat-1 was then activated and the Cosmonauts listened for the satellite's FM transmissions using the Kenwood TM-D700(E). This radio is normally used for ARISS school contacts which is connected to an adjacent ARISS external antenna. During the test, RSC-Energia decided to keep the transmitter on until Friday morning. AMSAT was notified Friday morning that the cosmonauts reported that tests were nominal. A number of ground stations reported hearing the transmissions as well, including AMSAT VP-Engineering Tony Monteiro, AA2TX in North Andover, MA. This preliminary test was not announced to amateurs in advance due to the short time frame between RSC-Energia's decision to conduct this test and when it was conducted as well as the uncertainty as to how long the satellite's transmitter would remain activated. 3. AMSAT learned on Friday morning, 11 FEB 11 that the deployment of the ARISSat-1 satellite had been removed from the RSA EVA 28 timeline by RSC-Energia management. NASA was informed that the ARISSat-1 deployment would be deferred to a later RS EVA, due to changes in the tasks associated with the configuration of RS pay- loads to be performed during RS EVA 28. Subsequently, RSC-Energia informed NASA that deployment of ARISSat-1 will be added to RSC EVA 29 currently scheduled for July 2011. February 13, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-044.02 The ARISSat-1 FM downlink on 145.950 MHz includes live SSTV images as part of the cycling voice ID, select spoken telemetry values, and the international greeting messages. The recently announced schedule delay for ARISSat-1 deployment gives every one time to begin station improvements to receive SSTV pictures from orbit. One fun feature is that there are four SSTV cameras mounted on the spacecraft. On photos of ARISSat-1 you may have noticed black brackets on the outside of the spacecraft. These hold the mirrors that reflect the light onto the lens of the cameras. The software- defined-transponder will use the image data from the cameras to generate the SSTV downlink. ARISSat's software will sequentially select a new or stored image from one the four cameras. There are two pre-recorded images as part of the sequence. The camera that took the the picture can be identified by the color of the call sign in the upper left of the SSTV image. The SSTV image will be sent down as FM audio SSTV in Robot 36 format on 145.950 MHz about every 140 seconds. The RF downlink power on the 145.950 MHz FM downlink will be 250mW which is predicted to provide a link margin around 6 dB on an HT with a 'big whip' when the satellite is at 15 degrees elevation. This should be sufficient to receive SSTV pictures although you may need to orient the whip to line up the antenna polarization. ARISSat-1 is not stabilized so the antenna orientation is unpredict- able and a certain amount of fading will happen. The receiving link margin may be improved with a handheld beam such as an "Arrow", "Elk", or "Cheap Yagi" antenna. (See: http://www.wa5vjb.com/references/Cheap%20Antennas-LEOs.pdf) General Overview Radio-to-Soundcard Interface --------------------------------------------- To view the SSTV downlink from ARISSat-1 you'll need a computer running SSTV software for your soundcard and an audio connection between your radio and the computer. If you are already on the air with other amateur radio soundcard applications chances are you are ready to receive ARISSat's SSTV downlink with little or no modification to your setup. The audio from the radio to the computer is the key link. An initial "Receive Only" configuration is easily done consisting of an audio patch cable between your radio and the soundcard. Take the speaker or headphone output from the radio and run it into the line (or mic) input on your PC sound card. Setting the level is simple also as the MMSSTV software has a bar indicator. Just adjust the sound card gain slider and/or radio volume control so that the SSTV signal is within the center part of the bar. MMSSTV will give you an "overflow" indication if the volume is too high. If your rig has a 'Line Out' connection this can be run to the soundcard 'Line In'. Using the radio 'Line Out' you won't have to deal with the interaction of the radio's volume control with the soundcard levels. But you will still need to use the soundcard 'Volume Control' to set the 'Line In' levels. SSTV Software Download Sites ---------------------------- There are many amateur radio SSTV software decoding applications available. One of the easiest to use on Windows computers is the MMSSTV program. This can be downloaded from: http://mmhamsoft.amateur-radio.ca/pages/mmsstv.php MMSSTV installs like most other Windows software. The download site has audio test files for you to learn with. If you have an HF rig the SSTV crowd hangs out 14.230 MHz and you can use their signals for testing and learning. MMSSTV will also automatically determine which SSTV protocol is in use. You won't need to remember Robot 36 if you set MMSSTV's RX mode to 'Auto'. Hi! I was planning on returning to Phoenix after the just-concluded AO7 pass, but will extend my stay out here. I will drive back to the DM32xx/DM42ax boundary for the VO52 pass at 0313-0326 UTC. This is a nice pass, up to max elevation of 40 degrees. Once this pass wraps up, it's back home to Phoenix. It will be dark, except for my lights and the traffic on a nearby highway and rail line. I will try to start out around 145.910 MHz +/- on the VO52 downlink, but may have to move around due to QRM or QRN. I don't work many VO52 passes in the evenings, so this will be interesting. 73! Mirage Rotor Interface.

Hi All, I picked up a G5400B rotor control box with a Mirage interface on top of it. It has a model number of MTI. Does anyone have any information on this unit. Heard ARISSAT-1 on two passes

Allen N5AFV had just finished a talk on ARISSAT-1 for the Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club here in SW Houston... Bruce KK5DO, Charlie K5ENG, and a few others headed outside to listen for the ARISSAT-1 tests from the ISS. We heard it on a 7-deg el pass using his TH-D72 HT. On the next pass, I was listening from home, but just wasn't quick enough to catch the SSTV signal in it's entirity. During today's Friday 16:00z ISS Mission Coverage on NASA TV, they announced that the launch of the Nanosat with space greeting celebrating the 50 years since Yuri Gagarin flight has been postponed from Wednesday space walk. . I ASSUME they are talking about ARISSat 1. No explanation was given as to why it has been delayed... Anyone have any other information ? I'm new to the SSB birds having just purchased a TS-2000. Unfortunately my radio and computer are about 25ft apart which makes tuning the uplink correction for SatPC32 pretty difficult. SASI SAT Tracker

I have an SASI Sat Tracker unit that was once used to interface with my G5400B rotator controller. I believe, based on my notes, that this device is compatible with Nova for Windows software for automatic rotator control. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am hoping to find someone who still has Nova for Windows gathering dust and is willing to part with it (in other words, has moved on beyond it). Hello AMSAT;.......Regarding my earlier message copied below asking for reports of the usage of our 2401MHZ beacon. We have received sufficient positive reports to continue to maintain this 24/7 beacon. I would like to thank all that responded with your comments and hope to hear from you from time to time with signal and TLM reports. Its CW Message contains 5 Telemetering (TLM) channels and about 15 sec of solid carrier (then it repeat). A spread sheet TLM decoder is available on request. The beacon is useful for Receive system testing and propagation analyzing etc. The 2401MHZ beacon is co-located with a 1296MHZ beacon and a 5760MHZ beacon. W0LMD Sat Tracker Jr. hunting/deadband problem

Hi all I have a W0LMD sat tracker jr. that I've connected to my PC for automation. Right now, I'm using Nova to control the rotor and SatPC32 to control the radio (I would like to use just SatPC32 for both, but I dont see an option to set a max elevation since my elevation can't go above 60 degrees). The problem is that every pass starts out fine, but as it gets going, the azimuth rotor starts rocking and hunting. It literally jerks the antennas back and forth until I turn off the G-5400. I have the rotor set up in Nova using Easycomm (and tried Novacom), but the "Deadband" boxes are greyed out. Would anyone have a alternative solution or be able to help me off list?
