Hello All, On June 1 a part of the team ZW8B arrives in Santa Isabel Island. Our intention is to work a greater number of days in the communications via Satellites. Our prediction is that we are still active in the satellites in the early evening of June 1 in the satellites ( AO-51 VO-52, SO-50, FO-29, SO-67 (if active), HO-68 and AO-7 A and B ). It's a good chance to work via satellite, a Brazilian amateur station and a rare grid. We hope to make a grand party of DX , especially for the community of satellite operators. Space Shuttle Retirement -Special Event Stations

Hi all, With what looks like the possible final flight for the Space Shuttle "Atlantis" and just two more launches for the others in the fleet, I had the following thought in mind. Has anyone considered "Special Event " stations with appropriate call signs being set up to operate on the amateur bands for both satellites and HF as a tribute. The "Space Program " together with MIR, ISS and the roles played by the Shuttle have inspired both young and old worldwide. Together with amateur radio they have been the key player and forefront in education science etc and a thrill to many of the younger generation via our hobby. I thought that it might be appropriate, if world wide, " Special Event Stations" could be set up at an appropriate time to commemorate the achievements. It could also serve and pay tribute to the astronauts, cosmonauts and the many key players and teams whom have been dedicated to these space projects that now mean so much to society. Sadly of course many will now bowing out with dignity as their service will no longer be required. The " Special Events " could also further benefit our hobby of amateur radio - and of course satellite projects through public awareness and maybe raising donations or support. Any thoughts? He plans on being active on the FM satellites Thursday, Friday, and the following Monday and Tuesday. No activity is expected over the weekend. John is an experienced satellite operator, but new to the FM satellites, so please give him a little room to put a somewhat rare DXCC entity on the air. AO-51 status update

I just wanted to give a little status update on AO-51. We are currently running just the normal V/U repeater, with PL enabled, and the power management software running. The power management routine adjusts the power output in three stages based on illumination state and battery voltage. Tonight we increased the high setting to 1.57 watts. The mid setting is at 290 mw, and the low setting is off. During passes over the eastern US, especially in the morning, we have been collecting telemetry on the 435.150 transmitter, so users may hear the power levels toggle on 435.300. The rest of the time outside of eclipse it should be pretty steadily at the high setting. Soon after entering eclipse, if in use, the transmitter will shut off. Eclipses continue to lengthen until about July 1, then drop back to zero by the third week of August. This last period of continuous illumination will last until January 2011. AO-51 will likely only be operational while illuminated after this date. I want to thank Mark Hammond N8MH, Kevin Schuchmann WA6FWF, and Jim White WD0E for their help with the satellite during this period of rearranging our operational plan, and learning new tricks to keep AO-51 available as much as possible. hi all, well it was a weired trip with wind, rain and yes tornado's i operated 2 passes on AO-51 from DN81-82 grid boundary on US385 south of Alliance Nebraska there is lots of room to operate from on both sides of the road a word of caution, it is across form an active railroad and BNSF security will be watching and asking if you are ok, but are nice and accommodating just stay on the west side of the highway and you will be ok. also not that the south dakota grids did not work out and will be tried later, thanks to those that worked me and hope i did not mess up any other people that were giving out grids, if you worked me send e-mail,or hard card with the info of contact some use eqsl and that is ok to, Rodney kc0zhf back in dn71

13 Original Colonies Special Event

It's that time of year again. Last year Tim, N3TL headed up a group of operators from the 13 original colonies. Fortunately for him, he recently started a new job, and will be unable to organize the satellite stations for the 4th of July event. After emailing Ken, the organizer of the event, I was told I could try to get another group of stations for the event to be active on the satellites. What I'm looking for is one operator from each of the 13 original colonies, NY-NJ-RI-GA-PA-NH-SC-VA-CT-DE-MD-NC, I will be MA. Unlike last year, we will have our own special event callsigns. Hi! Glenn XE1/VE3OQC, who has been on the SSB satellites from Guanajuato in Mexico over the past couple of months, asked me to pass along a message to the AMSAT-BB regarding his situation. Glenn is in the process of relocating from Mexico to Vancouver, and has dismantled his satellite station. He hopes to be settled in Vancouver this fall, when he plans to change his call to VE7OQC and get back on the air - including the satellites. He just mailed a bunch of QSL cards to hams across North America, for those who have had the pleasure of working him from his former home grid DL91. Hello Reid: If you don’t mind experimenting, connect one of these 2.4G MMDS grid antennas http://www.amazon.com/2-4GHz-24dBi-Outdoor-Antenna-Cable/dp/B001J1Y7IA/ref=… to the downconverter taken from this antenna http://cgi.ebay.com/Yagi-MMDS-ITFS-AFN-High-Gain-Antenna-Downconverter-Used… The downconverter IF output is given at 222-408 MHz. The noise figure which isn’t all that great is listed as < 2dBi. I use a grid antenna because it has much less wind load than the solid surface of a TV dish. For my S Band downlink, I use the AIDC 3731 downconverter tuned to the 2M band. For test tuning purposes, I built one of these 2.4GHz source oscillators to locate the 2M IF output from the downconverter. http://ve2zaz.net/SigSourc/SigSourc.htm DC power to the downconverter is explained here for a Bias T. http://www.hamtv.com/pdffiles/biasT.pdf Finally, if you want Doppler frequency control, a program called SATPC32 explains how to write the Doppler.SQF file based on the downconverter Local Oscillator offset frequency. You can expect others with better suggestions. But, the above detail works well for me. Squelch quieting for AO-51 V/S band downlink often pushes the S meter full scale (there are also deep fades with AO-51). 73, Ron n6paa

Today I read a lot of references to the 3731, but not much about the 3733. Just wondering if one is preferable to the other. Rich, N8UX

Hi Reid and those interested- -Getting into L & S can be as simple or as complicated as one tries to make it. Many of us are using modified MMDS downconverters http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS37… for what means. The downconverter takes the 2.4ghz downlink and "usually" converts it to the 2M band. However usually for a 2M output the crystal and some minor filter modification is required. Generally if used without modification the output is around 123mhz. A downconverter can be had for as much as about $500 for the UEK-3000 or a Keps for about $225 or a surplus MMDS unit can be found on Ebay for as little as $5 (caveat emptor). For AO-51 in mode S (downlink) reception has been reported with a simple patch antenna connected directly to the DC. Or a simple 5 turn (left hand ci rcular polarization) in front of a 18 inch TV type dish will work well. Or a longer (10 turn +) RHCP helix can work. Again the DC is connected directly to the antenna/feed to reduce losses. Usually power for the DC is feed up the coax (RG6) to the DC from a bais tee(power inserter). A larger dish could be the 36"X30" primestar, from that now defunct direct TV system. They are usually free, just watch roof lines around your neighborhood. The bigger the dish the higher the gain and the necessity for accurate pointing. I use a Transystem 3731AA (MMDS) downconverter/5 turn helix feed/Primestar dish which is connected to an old TS-700A transceiver with Tx disabled to avoid that maj or ooops of accidently transmitting into the DC. For 1.2ghz (L band) uplink will usually cost some coin! Many "satellite" radios, like the IC-910, FT-736 etc. and several others can be had and adding the optional 1.2ghz module. Again not too cheap. Or a transverter. If in your area there is local L band terrestial activity, it can be quite interesti ng. L band antennas can be loopers, yagi's or a helix. I can get into AO51 quite well with 10W from an IC-910 to a 16 turn helix. I have some pictures available which can answer many questions. Good luck with your efforts. Hi Domenico. (and the group)... Thank you so very much for taking your time to respond to my question! I appreciate it! I too have a lot of equipment I bought just before AO-40 went QRT. I have been holding on to this in hopes that a HEO would be again active. As you know, no luck (same in the stock market lately - hi). I have been active before on AO-51 but find the operation like 50MHz on 50.125 exchanging quick grid squares and nothing else! HEO operation is much prefered to LEO (for me). TNX AGN Domenico and keep up your great contributions to AMSAT-BB!! I try to read them all and study them in order to learn from you. VA7EWK from British Columbia, 3-11 July 2010

Hi! In the past two years, I have taken road trips through northern Arizona and parts of Utah and Nevada - lots of sightseeing, and lots of satellite operating. This year, I am escaping the desert heat, going north for a week. I will spend over a week in British Columbia, visiting much of Vancouver Island plus spending time in and around metropolitan Vancouver. I enjoy visiting Canada, and this is the perfect time of the year for me to head up there (it is hot in Arizona in early July - over 110F/43C!). During this trip, I plan on working satellites - FM and SSB - from many locations on Vancouver Island and some locations in and around metropolitan Vancouver as VA7EWK. The only things that have been set in stone right now are my flights to and from Vancouver. I go to Vancouver on Saturday, 3 July 2010, and return home on Sunday, 11 July. Beyond the flights, all plans are tentative at this time. I am thinking of spending a few days, including part of the 4 July holiday (in the USA) weekend on Vancouver Island, and then a few days at the end of the week in and around Vancouver. Based on several printed and online maps, it appears that I do not need a Jeep, tank, boat, or helicopter to visit 6 of the 8 grids on Vancouver Island (CN78, CN79, CN88, CN89, CO60, CO70). Of these 6, two of them are heard with some regularity on the satellites (CN88 and CN89), as those grids cover parts of Washington state and the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. I do not plan on much radio activity from them. The others are rarely heard, and those would be the focus of my radio operating while on the island. Two other grids on the island (CN69, CO50) could be visited, if I see passable roads when I am up there. Back on the Lower Mainland, CO80 north of Vancouver is one that has been rarely heard on the satellites. This is where the Whistler ski resort is located, and an area I want to visit and operate from. I may be able to drive to CN99 east of Vancouver, depending on how much time I have at the end of the week - assuming I start the week on Vancouver Island. I also hope to meet up with some satellite operators while I am in Vancouver. My recent trip to Dayton was partly a test in preparation for this planned trip to Canada. I wanted to bring a station with me to Dayton that I could use to work FM and SSB satellites, and in particular try to work long distances through the SSB birds to places I can't work from home in Arizona. As I had posted last weekend, I was able to make a couple of transatlantic QSOs via AO-7 from the Dayton area, and was able to work other satellites from points in and around Dayton. I will take my two FT-817NDs, Elk log periodic antenna, and other gear and accessories to Canada as my portable station - just like I did for Dayton. My merchant marine vessel is scheduled to sail from the Persian Gulf to Diego Garcia starting tomorrow, 24 May. I expect to be QRV in several wet grids during the afternoon and evening, as well as in the morning if my work schedule permits it. Hi! On Saturday, 5 June 2010, I will attend the White Mountain Hamfest in Show Low, Arizona. This is a half-day hamfest in eastern Arizona, and more information about the hamfest is available at: http://www.whitemountainhamfest.com/ During the hamfest, there will be on-air demonstrations on various satellites by WD9EWK. The hamfest site is in grid DM44xg. After the hamfest, depending on the time and weather, I hope to be on the air from the DM44/DM54 grid boundary which is less than 3 miles/5km east of the hamfest site. On Sunday, 6 June 2010, I plan on driving northward toward grid DM56 somewhere in northeastern Arizona or northwestern New Mexico. This is a grid I have worked from only once (July 2008), and have worked only one station via satellite from this area in the past few years. I will try to work as many passes, FM and SSB, that I can get on from up there into the mid-afternoon. Since it will take at least 5 hours for me to get home from this area, I cannot stay up there for the passes in the late afternoon or evening. I will post more information about this part of the trip to the -BB during that weekend. As with my other road trips, I will be happy to QSL contacts made with WD9EWK from the hamfest and the post-hamfest activity. I wanted to try heavens above for tracking. well I gi there make a acount so that my QTH is in there when I log in. its all good LOL so I try to rack ao-51 I cnat find it on that site, what up maybe it because im new to that site. The power management software combined with the PL, should mean the satellite's batteries can be protected from over-discharge, while still providing the strongest possible downlink signal and highest possible availability. Observations from the southern hemisphere while entering and leaving eclipse are very helpful. The main mission of UNITEC-1 is to perform technological experiments of on-board computers and test long-range, inter-planetary communication using amateur radio frequencies: Downlink Frequency: 5840.000MHz, band width 20MHz Transmission Power: 4.8W/antenna, 9.6W total Antenna: 2 Microstrip patch antennas Modulation: AFSK/FM 1200bps during LEO flight CW 1bps during Interplanetary flight Callsign: JQ1ZUN News posted on the UNITEC-1 Operations Center web page reports that its CW and FSK signal have been received from a distance of approx- imately 300,000 km by Japanese ground stations on its first pass over Japan kept from 16:15 (JST) to 25:15 (JST) at 21st May. Their signal report indicated the measured downlink frequency of 5839.91 MHz which is down slightly from the design frequency of 5840.00 MHz. The UNITEC team will continue to work on refining receiving and recording tech- niques as well as tracking and orbital determination. Astronomy AZ/EL mount for radio use

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone has thought of using the Ioptron Mini Tower cube telescope mount as an AZ/EL rotor for small antenna's? I'm not talking about a permanent installation, but more of a portable setup. The main concerns I can think of are... 1..The slewing rate not being fast enough to track LEO (Low Earth Orbiting) satellites. 2..The antenna's having too much wind load on the mount. Weight shouldn't be much of a problem with smallish antenna's. 3..Finding satellite tracking software compatible with the ASCOM proticol. Any thoughts???? Thanks, Rod

Frank, We were forwarded, via the AMSAT-BB, from Mineo the FO-29 telemetry that you captured and anylyzed. As an observer and avid user of FO-29 I found it very informative. If the solar array output continues to deteriorate perhaps the control operators might consider a PL tone to open the transmitter to conserve the battery when not in use, which is what they are doing with AO-51. I agree with you Frank that FO-29 is a wonderful high orbit LEO however I must disagree with your statement "AMSAT seems only interested in FM single channel repeater type satellites which are very boring to me."Amsat is just as interested as we are in launching a HEO Satellite, it is the financing of such a project in this new global economy that is holding the launch back, thank you.73's PeteWB2OQQwww.massapequanyweather.com

A ham friend is having a problem with SATPC32. He didn't know what version he is running. His computer is running Vista and when he tries to load SATPC32, he gets a prompt that mentions a "64 bit" problem. Sorry to be so vague, but I'm getting this second hand. How many of us have some little trinket, gizzmo, piece of equipment that we're, "going to get around to it". Where in the back of your head that little voice, doubts it. On Ebay one can sell "almost" anything. Don't have an Ebay account? Bet you know someone who does. Until Sept.1 D.A.R.A. will match any contribution to AMSAT contribution up to $5000. Now that little gizzmo you're going to get "around to it" maybe worth $10 or maybe a lot more. Why not contribute a piece of the profits or all of it to AMSAT and then it's times 2. My recent efforts by the time it's all done will be between $500-$800 to AMSAT. With little or no skin off my nose. I still have more stuff in my "around to it" pile. So check out your "around to it " pile. If you want information email me, I do not recommend the Mission Fish process. I have been trying to work HO-68 on fairly good passes but can no hear a thing. Sometimes I think I hear faint voices but that could be wishful thinking. I am new to using the sat's but have been around the hobby for years. I am using a Kenwood TH-G71 with the uplink and tone +downlink programmed into one memory. Also using a arrow antenna . I am talking about above 40 pass . I know it is around 1200 K up so do I need a preamp to hear it and what are my real chances of doing this with around 5 watts? According to the published schedules It should be on for NA. I know my track time was good because I did check near the end of the pass and could hear the packet burst from ARISS. Hi all Thanks for all the rplys and links to vids pDFs and how to and genral advise. right now what i have to use is a ICom ic 28 HT 2 meter a HTX 202 a hand held VHF/UHF scanner for listen to the downlinks a dimound 510 on my tower & and a tri band whip aswell as a home brew 3 element yagi. I working on getting a yagi from a friens his not use 4 elment. a old camera tri pod to mount wicth wver yagi I use. right now im using gsat for tracking, but that will change Im trying to find tracking software I like. SO im thinking out of that list I cam make somthing work to get my fet wet. I been listening For FO-29 VO-52 AO-51 Ao 27 and ISS. they all made passes in the last few hrs. I dodnt hear amything but i guess that happens I was hoping to hear at least FO-29s CW beacon but i didnt. well it keep fidh though my gear and see what i got around the shack to make thinks easyer to listen, hear and make contact. this questoin may be off topic if so Im Sorry. Hi Dee, Looks a great unit, the preliminary spec is at http://www.icomuk.co.uk/getFile.asp?categoryID=3508&cCID=16907&fFID=244 I noted the 1240 MHz band coverage goes out to 1320 MHz, be useful in the UK as our 23cm band goes out to 1325. The incorporation of a USB port is good, wish all rigs had one. The only disappointment is the absence of the 70 MHz band which we now have in much of Region 1. I look forward to the QST review which will should a good indication how it performs in practice. Yesterday I downloaded and installed the latest version of Erich's wonderful program on a newer PC, XP. I've been using an older version of his excellent program for as many years as it has been in existence. I made a couple of contacts on the latest version today, and was surprised when an "audible" rang out!! I'm sure I can find an explanation in his outstanding documentation, but can someone tell me what it is saying? Please do not use AO-51 while eclipsed

We've turned the repeater back on on AO-51, along with the PL. I have a favor to ask of our Southern Hemisphere users, including those in South America, Southern Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Please avoid using AO-51 while the satellite is eclipsed. Most tracking programs indicate illuminated or eclipsed states, and it can always be found by whether the footprint of the satellite is crossing or in contact with the footprint of the sun. Generally this is occurring when the satellite is south of 30 degrees latitude at present. I realize this is a large favor to ask, but the alternative right now is moving to a scheduled type operation, which I would like to avoid. AO-40 question(s)

So I'm considering putting together something that can work AO-40 and similar satellites, but everywhere I look says you need 2 radios or full duplex. Never really said why so I'm curious why its required to have 2 radios (which just seems more complex & expensive) or full duplex to operate on this HEO. Couldn't I use a laptop and a data cable to control a rig like a Yaesu FT-817 to line up the Rx and Tx?
