While it is not full duplex, it works well as the RX side of a mode J handheld station. I've had it less than six months if even that long. It has never even been outside the house and is in like new condition. Of course box, manual, charger and stock rubber duck are all included. I'll also throw in a 3ft. long adapter cable that goes from the SMA jack on the radio to an SO-239 where an external antenna can be used. Price is $110.00 shipped priority mail in the lower 48. The pre amp is an Advanced Receiver Research SP432VDG with N connectors. The RF switching circuit is rated at 25 watts, I actually only ever used it on a receive only setup with the VX-3R. The pre amp has been mast mounted in a weatherproof enclosure. ARR says these units will withstand heat and cold extremes with no problem, they just have to be mounted in a waterproof enclosure if put outside. As with the HT the unit has seen very little use and is like new. Price is $85.00 shipped priority mail in the lower48. I will accept Paypal or a United States Postal Service money order as payment. W1RJA EME event, Echoes of Apollo Aside of the "Pickle dipole" did any one have an idea of their setup? (Amp power and # of beam element) A linear amp and the beam stacking is giving the required ERP on the TX side and the 3db stacking gain seems to make the difference between reception just at the noise level and something above the noise. N3FJP Amateur Contact Log and LoTW

Is anyone else having problems downloading data from LoTW for N3FJP's AC Log?? I have not been able to download data for about 2 weeks. I can upload. I get an error saying: The data file did not complete normally. Please try downloading the file again. I have tried about 25 times. Any ideas? It has been working so well! Mike Kb8zgl

NH6VB on HO-68

This last pass of HO-68 over the Pacific produced another Hawaiian station, Peter, NH6VB. Leo, W7JPI and I were in QSO and at the last 5 minutes of the pass, Peter broke in from Honolulu which was a surprise. He is a local there from what we gathered. He's in BL01 grid square. John W6ZKH

Hi Luc and all I am using a Transystem 3731AA downconverter. Also an old Kenwood TS-700A for the tunable IF. I have compared Keps 13LNC-PH downconverter against the 3731. The 3731 is virtually immune to desense to 2M tx as well as wifi etc. However the Keps (pricey) is affected by the 2M tx. Without the noise blanker turned on in the TS-700 I get lots of snapping, popping from wireless phones, wifi etc. The noise blanker in this old 700 is superb, better that the one in my 910! Go figure! Mind you this is all empirical evaluation using nothing but my ears. I have heard the filter in the 3731 is better than most. I will be shipping some of my dc's soon to a fellow who can give a very accurate evaluation on these devices. Desense is very noticeable on VHF and UHF when a transmitter is transmitting near a receiver as per i can see on a PCR-1000 scope screen there is always a 10db noise floor but i'm not sure if this level is not really much higher as the scope seems to not be fast enough to display the real peak level of all the signal on 2.4Ghz. If a fairly high amount of desense is always present this could explain why the downconverter is lacking sensitivity and why some normal fades appears deeper than they really are. And what is worse is the WI-FI QRM is also right on the received 2.4Ghz amateur band. Here i have to switch off my WI-FI router and my 2.4Ghz camera when i want to listen on 2.4Ghz and the camera is the worse as she give 30 over 9 very wide spread signal. Opinions are welcome. Eastern VHF Conference Arecibo EME video

This past weekend was the 36th Eastern VHF Conference in Endfield, CT, hosted by the Northeast Weak Signal Group. We had a complete 432 EME station on the air and used the club calsign, W1RJA, to make contact with Arecibo, KP4AO. Dave Olean, K1WHS, and Bob Petersen, KB2RWW, provided a tower, rig, KW amp, antennas and everything else to make it all happen. It was a great event! Congratulations to arecibo activation

The day before yesterday I could receive arecibo in SSB and I received several reports, CQs and ending transmissions such as "over over". Yesterday I could receive very clear the CW signal, it was a very steadily signal. When they change to JT65 I called to EB4FXD and he told mo how I had to configure the software. The sofltware in an old version could decode 100%. Pedro EB4DKA could receive the signal witn a single CJU and a THF6, so they encouraged me to try the contact. I can´t belive my eyes!, I have never tried an EME contact but with only 20 minutes spare to shut off they sent your report !!!!!!!!. Icom IC-9100 at Dayton

Icom is expecting to show the prototype of IC-9100. It will be a combination of the IC-746Pro and IC-910H satellite rig. It will have an optional 1.2 gHz module and an optional D-Star module available that can be added to it. Expected availability is early Fall with more confirmed timing after we start production. Estimated street price for the basic model should be around $3k with more confirmed info after it is in production. Pre-release information can found on the Icom America website. Arecibo Success

I've only seen RX reports, so far. I was successful working KP4AO and it was quite a thrill for me. The first day, signals were weak. I didn't copy them on USB, but was able to hear them about 40-50% on CW. I called and called for the entire time. (CW) We were taking down the station of W4AD (SK), who enjoyed EME. My hope was to make one last contact from his back yard. Unfortunately, it didn't work out the first day. On day 2, I set up a station my back yard. KP4AO was louder and I was able to copy USB, but the QSB always hit at the wrong time. Inevitably, I heard 599 and 'over'! When KP4AO switched to CW, I was able to copy them about 80% of the time with the QSB. Finally, at 16:25 Eastern, I worked them on CW with my 23 element K1FO yagi, TS-2K, preamp and 175W. I tried several different TX frequencies and was very persistent. The S-Meter never moved and it was like working a typical weak VHF signal. Arecibo grumble

Hello I have never uttered a controversial word on this bb. This Arecibo event presented us with a fantastic opportunity. I truly applaud those who set this event up and ran it. However-the object is to make contacts, and as many as possible in the allotted time. The CW procedures were laborious, 73's, multiple calls, excessive id'ing. They needed a top notch cw op. They used SSB, CW, then JT-65. I was waiting for them to try FM. Again, I am grateful for the chance to try to participate in this event. I learned a great deal in preparing and participating in the process. Their signal peaked at 569 using a 910 with 50feet of LMR400 to a 40 el CP yagi set for LHCP. I am sure the JT-65 mode gave flea powered stations an opportunity. As I hit this send button they have 40 minutes left. They might work a few more. grumble!!

Arecibo recordings

Here is 2 recordings of april 17 Arecibo EME transmission received on a linear 24 elements yagi with an Icom preamp on an FT-847 60' of LMR- 400. http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=541211 http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=541210 http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=541209 My first observation is while some seems to report great reception with moderate set up? i cannot say my first EME reception is Q5... When you listen the audio file put your volume up as KP4AO is way down in the noise but after a couple of try you will be able to detect some words from them. The CW recording is much better with the maximum of filtering. Conclusion:1- An LEO class satellite station does not make an EME station at all. 2- Accurately reporting a reception by ears is not an exact science... recording tells the truth without any doubts 3- My third file is giving some explanation about why my JT65B program give's me 4 EME call sign: F5BUU KU7Z K3AX IQ2CJ I will try this mode if they used it but as i does not want to be controversial i think the 4 stations that i got on my JT65B screen where probably never transmitting at the time of reception!!! Just read the third file above and you will be able to understand more my point 2! Anyway it was my first EME SWL reception "i hope" as some just tells me it is possible that tropo scater reflection in the caribbean and ducting made some getting the Arecibo signal this way as their EIRP made it quite possible explaining the rapid QSB reported by some station. Here as soon as i move the antenna off by 10 deg Arecibo disappear. Just to pointed out i was listening the HAARP EME test 2 years ago and i was able to copy their HF ionospheric signal and their moon reflected signal much much weaker but some on the world where only able to get the moon reflected signal as they where out of range form the standard HF propagation path. Just to warned those in the tropo scatter/RF ducting path from Arecibo to checked if moving their antenna off the moon make the signal disappear. P.S. If someone is aware of an audio software able to filtered out the noise from a recording just pointed me toward the source. Satpc32 does change the rx frequency and I have played with the delay setting in satpc32. Any suggestions?? Preamp mounting?

Hi folks, So, a follow-up to my previous message. All this discussion about EME got me thinking... We're always taught to put your preamp as close to the feed point as possible, but as with everything, there are tradeoffs. Where should the Preamp be mounted? Choices: 1 - on the antenna boom, at the feed point (or attached to the CP relay) 2 - on the rotor cross arm 3 - below the rotor, where the flex transitions to the main feed I'm thinking that #1 is a problem. Yes, it's the shortest run, but you've got the weight of the preamp at the far end of the antenna, unbalancing things. Depending on the antenna, it might be right in the middle of a bunch of elements, so putting a metal box there might upset the antenna's performance or impedance. It's would also be subjected to the strong RF fields of the antenna during transmit. #2 is probably the best; fairly short coax run on the antenna side, and somewhat outside of the RF field. #3 (what I have) is most convenient, and has one less set of connectors to go bad, and one less wire to snake around the rotor. Weather proofing is easier when the object being proofed can't move, and mounting the preamp on the tower, for me at least, is a lot easier. And, it's not THAT much more coax to the antenna. Hi all, On a lark, I took my FT817 with ARR preamp and 8-el cheap yagi downstairs to listen for KP4AO. They were about 349 on CW around 2000Z. Unbelievable, I thought. I have tremendous noise of all manmade kinds here in Manhattan. You can only imagine how loud the noise is. Still, KP4AO was in there steadily for as long as I listened, about 15 minutes.. Another reason for my surprise is that the FT817 has no CW filter. With a filter, I'm sure they would have been Q5. Pointing the beam was not critical at all. This all reminds me of W2RS's backyard EME article of some years ago. Are you in there, Ray? Anyone out there with a spare million watt amp? 73, Tony, N2UN

Was wondering today after searching around on the internet, what radios are people using for satellite operations as I noticed the ICOM IC-910H and the Yaesu FT-847 are now discontinued? Was hoping to get into the SSB/CW satellites but was hoping to do it on a new radio, but it seems the satellite radios are disappearing from the market. Arecibo and circular polarization using cheap yagis

I heard Arecibo would be using circular polarization, but I haven't heard if it will be left or right-handed circular polarization. I also heard that there's a way to do circular polarization with the popular "cheap yagis." Apparently the details are in an article in the April 1999 issue of CQ VHF "Cheap Circular Polarization? It Can Be Done" on pages 66-69. Is there anyone on the list that has this back issue that can tell me what the method is that is described in this article? Is it a physical quarter-wave displacement on the same boom? Two booms with a quarter-wave coax delay? Something else? How is the circular polarization done with the cheap yagis? Douglas KA2UPW/5

OT-ish - anyone got FT-290 bits?

Hi all, In order to get onto the linear transponders I picked up a slight-project Yaesu FT-290 at a rally last weekend. It's pretty much working, but the display is faulty. It pretty much only ever displays a backwards F, no matter what you do. Other than that it tunes, memorises, clarifies and generally seems to behave itself, so I suspect that the display IC is faulty and the CPU is actually okay. So, does anyone have a dead FT-[267]90 for spares? Really, I just need the display PCB (the LCD seems fine, so I'd take a chance on one with a broken LCD) or even just the chip. If I could find spec on the chip I'd even have a crack at building a replacement controller. Feel free to reply offlist if you don't want to noise up the list with radio fixing chatter. AGWPE and Window 7 problems

Greetings all. Having only 12 el on 70cm and no az/el, Arecibo is so not happening at my QTH. But I digress. I recently went to a new Windows 7 (Intel Core I-7 processor) computer from a P4 (what a delight.) Anyway, SatPC, digipan, MMRTTY, HRD all work fine using my Signalink. What no longer works, however, is AGWPE and UISS. Unless I set the default speakers in the computer to the USB codec (Signalink), it simply will not transmit packet. Decodes fine. This is preventing me from d'ing on NO44 and ISS. I have posted this problem on some other sites but so far no useful feedback. If you are running Signalink, AGWPE and Windows 7, can we talk offline? I'm at work and not QRV, but I had no problem copying them with a single 12 el. yagi leaned again the chair when they did the test a couple of weeks ago, and most everyone else gave them good reports. At the time, they were running 50w, a barefoot Kenwood TS-2000. They must have changed rigs if now they only have 20w. And something else must be wrong, because even folks with big antennas are having trouble copying them (more so than the 50w vs. 20w would suggest). I went home for a "lunch break" and was able to copy them on CW (but not SSB) with the following: M2 440-18 (an 11' vertical/linear antenna that claims 14.5 dBd) ARR MSP432VDG-160 preamp (claims 0.55 dB NF) TS-2000X radio, CW mode, filter width betwen 600Hz and 200Hz It wasn't arm-chair copy, but after nudging the array around a bit, I could make out characters and their call. Didn't try to listen to anybody else (assuming they would quite a bit lower). Thanks Mark, Well, I had the same position data in both AOS and SATPC32. I don't know what was happening, but it seems to have magically resolved itself. Both programs now read the same. Strange. But I think we can attribute it to RF getting into the computer. At any rate I'm glad I didn't go ahead and reinstall everything. Oh well - you don't have to be good of you're lucky! Roger VA7MG

Circular polarisation question

Thank you for reading this. Ten years ago I built a pair of circular polarised aerials primarily for satellite use. The UHF aerial has 12 elements in each plane while the VHF aerial has 6 elements in each plane. My UHF received signal strength often seems to be below that of other stations and so I'm rethinking how I have set up these aerials. The received signal strength via VO-52 is S7 at the best, without a pre-amplifier, and so I'm happy with that. The UHF aerial is where the problem is even thought they are set up in the same way. Both aerials are mounted in an X orientation. One set of elements is a quarter wave ahead of the other set. Because of the X mounting I cannot tell if the vertical set is ahead of the horizontal set or not. Each aerial is fed via a power splitter via equal length cables. My question is; does this sound like a correctly set up right hand polarised aerial? Originally I thought it was now I'm not sure. -- Regards, Phil

Hi Fran EA1JM and All Many things can be the cause 1-Check up your receiving setup ! listen to beacon before you transmit . 2- some time the sat not changed to FM mode (happened few time ) instead of the schedule stats so. 3- check the beacon to see which mode is on. 4-AFC in downlink shift the frequency so fast ,so deactivate it until you hook with strong down link signal. 5-Never Try to work FM satellite in IC-910 sat-mode . IMHO IC-910 sat mode is perfect only for Xponder satellite. 6- check volume level! and check if the tone on the VHF and not on UHF.(common mistake to mix uplink tone with downlink tone) 7-Check Main and Sub External speaker setting combination Hope this help! 73 de Nader

SatPC32

Dear Folks, I am attempting to get myself back on the satellites and am having some problems with SatPC32. Although WinAOS gives me accurate satellite position data, SatPC32 does not. Furthermore satellite AOS/LOS data is different between the two programs, sometimes by a half an hour. I have checked all the settings and have tried updating the Keps but can't seem to get the program to display accurate data. Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know if there way around this other than re-installing SatPC32? (I'd rather not have to input all the settings again if I don't have to.) AO-7 "situation"

Hello Just got off AO-7, it really sounds not too good. Weak and distorted audio. Like not enough voltage from the 35 year old solar cells. Heard eveything from response to a CME event to being in mode C to being hit by whatever. The audio distortion does not depend on the uplink power, it sounds distorted weather I ran very minimum power or more. I know we are simply "blessed" to have this old bucket of bolts for our enjoyment. Perhaps some our experts on the bb can shed some of their expertise on what's going on with this old bucket. 73 Bob W7LRD

Settings to work HO-68 in FM

Hello to all the people in the list, I would like to know if you use any special setting to work the HO-68 sat in FM, because I have tried for to two days to enter in the satellite with no success. I have an icom IC-910H, with the pl tone of 67 in the uplink but there is no way to enter in the sat. I have tested to increase the power or decrease and tried to follow the sat the best way possible with my yaesu g-5500 and my X-Quad wimo antennas with no luck. Do you have any recommendation? NH6VB back on the satellites from Hawaii

Hi! On Saturday (10 April) morning, there was an HO-68 SSB/CW pass that went from the north toward the Pacific Ocean. I was out at my normal Phoenix QTH (DM33xp/DM43ap boundary), and worked 3 stations. Early in the pass, John VE8EV called me from CP38. I've worked John in the past when I was on a road trip, and this was the first time I have heard him - or worked him - from my "home QTH". After that, Mike KC9ELU in Indiana called me. Then I went back to CQing, until the third station I heard on that pass called me - Peter NH6VB. I remembered seeing his posts to the -BB last month about getting a new satellite radio, and then trying to get SatPC32 working again. We ended up chatting for a few minutes, as the satellite was approaching LOS for me. It was fun to work VE8EV and KC9ELU, but hearing NH6VB calling me on HO-68 in SSB was a huge - and pleasant - surprise. After the pass, Peter sent me an e-mail explaining his setup. His larger Yagis are still on the ground, but he was using an Arrow Yagi until those other antennas are back on his tower. For those that missed AA5UK/KH6 recently, and have not heard the only resident station working the SSB satellites from Hawaii in recent years (WH6BIE), we may now have another option for those looking to work Hawaii via satellite in modes other than FM. Hopefully Peter will show up on more passes, as he continues to get his satellite station back on the air. And, maybe, we can return this list to its regularly-scheduled subject matter... :-) 73! OX Dxpedition Update

I just wanted to give everyone an update on an upcoming QTH change. Although I am scheduled to be in Thule until April 23rd, there is a chance I could leave as early as April 21st. I will be going to Wallops Island, VA to put our radar equipment on a P-3 aircraft and do flight tests. I will be returning to Greenland on May 1st (although there is talk that it will be pushed back to May 4). I will be in Sondrestrom, grid GP47pa, for two weeks before returning to Thule for two more weeks around May 18. Thanks to everyone that has tried to work me. Most Hams in Space at one time?

Currently there are 9 licensed American Amateur Radio operators on the ISS currently going by the list that is at the ARISS site on RAC.org. Is this the most hams in space to date or has there been more before this shuttle-ISS mission? James W8ISS

Yaesu FT-847 vs. Kenwood TS-2000?

Any thoughts on the pros and cons of each of these rigs, particularly for satellite work? The used price for each is about the same, maybe a little higher for a fairly new TS-2000. I am aware of the TS-2000 birdie issue. 73, Bill NZ5N

Space Debris: Predicted near impact for AO-51

The Joint Space Operations Center at Vandenberg AFB has reported that AO-51 will have a ~200 meter (i.e. 2 football fields) approach to object #34890 at 08:51Z on April 13th. Object #34890 (see http://www.n2yo.com/satellite/?s=34890 and http://celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/iridium-33-debris.txt) is one piece of the more than 500 pieces of debris left over after the Iridium-33 -- Kosmos-2251 collision on Feb. 10,2009 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_satellite_collision). The total mass of the two spacecraft was about 1600 kg (well over one ton). You can get an HD movie animation of the Iridium/Kosmos collision here (warning -- 50 MB ZIP file). 73, Tom
