Seems typical to me that the federal government would set a precedent in which they encourage licenses in space which I assumed to be free space. Why should anyone require a license off the planet? This reminds me of the FCC selling licenses for frequencies that only exist when used. Russian president calls station for Cosmonautics Day

9:50 AM, 4/12/10 Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called the International Space Station early Monday to mark the 49th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's historic flight, suggesting an international space summit to discuss ongoing and future cooperative ventures on the high frontier. "Space is our highest priority, regardless of how hard the economic situation is in the country," Medvedev said in translated remarks. "Space will always remain our priority. This is not just somebody's interpretation, it's our official state position. I am here in my presidential office and when addressing you, I can confirm again the significance of space for the government." "We want to thank you again for today's holiday," station commander Oleg Kotov replied. All six Expedition 23 crew members - Kotov, Alexander Skvortsov, Mikhail Kornienko, Tracy Caldwell Dyson, Timothy Creamer and Soichi Noguchi - gathered for the conversation in the U.S. Destiny laboratory module. "On behalf of all of us here on the International Space Station, including our shuttle colleagues, we just want to wish everyone congratulations on this historic day," Caldwell Dyson told the Russian president. "It means as much to us for the event of Yuri's first launch as it does for all of the people involved in making this space program possible. We're all filled with gratitude and appreciation. Congratulations to all of you." Medvedev told the space station crew that in the early years of the space program, "development of cosmonautics was based on ideology and now, this is the area where we should try to assist each other in creating the mechanisms that will yield collective results. And this cooperation, I believe, is extremely important for the future, taking into account that space programs become more and more complicated, more and more costly, and the goals that we set become more and more complicated. "No country can develop space alone, we need to combine our efforts and we need to talk about it more often," he said. "So maybe we could have some sort of international meeting, maybe at the heads of governments level. Because we talk about various issues, such as tackling all kinds of challenges, dangers and hazards that humanity is facing these days, various disarmament programs, etc., but there is a very important and positive factor that unites us all. So maybe it would be good to have a summit, maybe at the heads of governments level, for the countries that are working in space. So see, I have a very good idea on this holiday. What do you think? We could invite you to participate as well." Kotov called the International Space Station "a great example of international cooperation where we have two completely different technical schools, Russian and U.S., and we combine our effort, we found the interfaces not only for machines but also for humans and we've created this wonderful, fully functional station ... and that is something that should be used in the future. "Together, we have created a single organism," Kotov said. "The crew functions as one body even though it consists of representatives from different countries. We have had a European astronaut on board, we have Japanese astronauts on board right now, we have American astronauts, Russian, and we understand each other perfectly, we don't have any conflicts and I hope this will be true also regarding our cooperation everywhere else." "Oleg, those are very good words, it's nice to hear that," Medvedev replied. Then he changed the subject, saying "I think it will be a mistake if I don't ask you some simple questions. How's life?" "Well, it's like one of the most popular questions that we're asked - what do you like best in space?" Kotov said. "And my answer is always two things: weightlessness and the view out of the window. Also, just life in this three dimensional space, where walls and floor and ceiling become all the same. That's very interesting, and it takes changing your mind the way you think about your surroundings." Medvedev asked if the absence of gravity caused any problems for the station crew. "I can tell you honestly in my first flight, I noticed one month into the flight I had this feeling as though I had been living in space and weightlessness my entire life, it became such a natural part of my thinking that I didn't have any problems," Kotov said. "Everything was so natural, so pleasant, so comfortable, you get used to all the minor negative details of being in weightless, you begin to enjoy the positives tremendously. And that's something you don't forget and your body remembers that. It was interesting. After I came back to Earth, I was uncomfortable, actually, experiencing Earth's gravitation. To me, it was strange to see the people not only walking on the surface of the planet, but also running. It seemed very difficult." Medvedev asked about the food on the International Space Station, wondering "are they feeding you well?" "Food in space is different from the ideas people have based on what they knew in the 60s or 70s," Kotov said. "The food becomes more and more similar to what we eat on Earth. We don't have any tubes. We do have cans and the variety is pretty good. Because we're using the resources of all the space agencies, we have a very international cuisine. Please help me remember how the FT-530 is used for "full duplex" FM sat ops. Correct me, and add to this list - THANK YOU! - You must use an earpiece (or a headset) so that the RX audio isn't passed - There is a keystroke sequence to enable either the LEFT side or the RIGHT side to be the EARPHONE - what is it? - Then a press of the PTT "locks in" that audio choice setting, right? W1AW

In the last week or so, some of us have heard W1AW on AO-27 and maybe SO-50 calling CQ. I for one was wondering if it was truly W1AW since the station was not replying to any calls. So, I made a call to HQs and talked with Joe Carcia NJ1Q, station manager of W1AW inquiring if it was truly W1AW from HQ trying to make some contacts. Sure enough, it was Joe himself. He is working out some bugs with the W1AW Satellite station to prepare for the big EME weekend later this week. ( Be on the look out for them ) Joe and myself talked a while and he mentioned that he had forgotten about the imaging signal on the Kenwood TS-2000 on the downlink frequency of both AO-27 and SO-50. So, in short, if you do hear W1AW on the air, rest a sure, it is Joe testing and willing to give out QSOs to all when possible. Joe also did not make any promises but said he would try and show up on AO-51 V/S mode next week after I mentioned to him I lost my QSL Card where I worked him in V/S mode to Hurricane Katrina. Hi Fran & all In none satellite mode use: Main mini din for tx audio and ptt (same for 1k2 and 9k6 ) and the sub mini din for rx (this can be configer for 1k2 or 9k6 baud) (ground from both to sheld the signal) If u want to use main band only (eg in ISS ie1k2 ) disconnect the sub and supply the audio to PC from headphone jake. He is operating on the FM satellites and he has set up a Google Groups at http://groups.google.com/group/ox-thule-2010/topics where he posts his anticipated operating schedule. This information has been on the Amsat-BB previously and it also appears on the "Launch Pad" of the AMSAT website. AO-51 mode change

AO-51 is now running two repeaters. 145.88/435.15 is for contacts by and with the Boy Scouts celebrating their 100th anniversary this week, and when not in use by the Boy Scouts, QRP stations are welcome. We define QRP as 10 watts or less, AND omni or handheld antennas only. 145.92/435.3 is still open for general traffic, and for now the PL access testing continues. On your computer click start, programs, SatPC32, and it should expand with a list of programs. SuM should be in the list. I am running Vista, but XP should be similar. A quick look at the access from Europe shows that the moon is in a similar location to the sun next weekend. So higher gain antennas on 70cm will help reduce sun noise too. SSB 70cm Pre AMp

Hi Everyone, Just set up my station and started to receive all the main satellites, using a Gulf satellite antenna (2M + 70cm) + SSB 70cm Preamp and FT736R When I transmit on 2M, especially FM, it's as if the preamp is squelching - the receive signal reduces significantly. If I turn the preamp off I don't get the problem, I can continue to hear the received signal. Any ideas? Peter Wilson G8KEK AMSAT UK 6897

Hi Drew, On our clear pass south to north into ZS, at 16h07 utc, the bird was off and switched on with tone. Stayed on for 120 secs after PPT recycled. Goes off even though a tone station is busy. Works just fine ! Nice to have the higher power output from the bird. I presume this mode will save some power in swithing TX off ? 73 andre zs2bk

Hello Friends, I have two observations: The first - the team control of the AO-51 correctly employed the use of PL tone to activate the bird. Here in South America constantly listen to interference from phones and others strangers broadcasts through its downlink. I hope the use of PL tone is adopted and so permanent. The second observation is related to EME - our friend Roland, PY4ZBZ managed to received the signals from the Arecibo Radio Observatory on 22/03/2010 at 21:30 UTC in 432.045 MHz with only a small UHF antenna for 6 elements and a simple FT1000d transceiver. Roland with his equipment received signals in CW and SSB. Congratulations to our dear friend Roland, who with his feat, he broke the paradigm that is not possible with a simple antenna on hand to listen to a broadcast EME. Hi all, I didn't get a response the last time I asked, so I'll try again, slightly differently. What TNC or TNC-like equipment do I need to listen to BeeSat at 4800 bps? I have a TS-2000, yagi antenna, rotator, and KAM-XL, but the KAM-XL can only do GMSK at 9600 bps. Thanks in advance for your time, Nate KC2SVI

AO-51 power up, PL test tomorrow

This evening I shut the 435.150 transmitter off and raised 435.300 to near 2 watts output. Tomorrow morning I plan to turn on the new PL routine. This improved routine will turn the downlink on with an unsquelched uplink when it hears a 67 hz tone. I plan on leaving a tail of several minutes, so the transmitter will stay on without hearing a tone for an interval of several minutes. What does this mean for the user? It would be helpful to program in a 67 hz PL tone again, but not absolutely required as long as someone else in the footprint does. It also means if you are the first person in the footprint (not very likely in North America, Europe, or Japan) you might not hear the satellite until after it hears 67hz for a few seconds. If all goes well, we'll continue this mode through the mode change Sunday night. Reports from when the downlink turns on or off would be appreciated. 73, Drew KO4MA AMSAT-NA VP Operations

FT-847 CAT Question

I just got my FT-847 back from Yaesu for repairs due to a lightning strike. The radio powers up and what little I've checked seems to work except for the CAT port. 1. I have tried both SatPC32 and HRD to talk to the radio, but nothing happens. I don't even get the "CAT" indicator on the radio which, if memory serves, would show up even if I had erroneous settings you just couldn't do anything with the radio / software. 2. I have changed to slower baud rates in the programs and correspondingly, the baud rate in the FT-847. 3. I have changed baud rates in device manager for this COM port. 4. I have changed that COM port flow control from none to Xon/Xoff to hardware with no change. 5. I have changed HRD to use DTR, DTR and RTS, and just RTS. 6. I just tried a reset of all settings on the FT-847 and that still does not solve the issue. 7. I have checked the null-modem cable with an RS-232 tester and it appears good. 8. I just hooked that tester up to the cable with the other end of the cable connected to the radio and pins 2, 3, and 5 lit up. (Strange, I cannot duplicate that test now - nothing lights up on the RS-232 tester.) At this point, I'm pretty sure my CAT port got taken out too (there was no way for me to test this before sending back to Yaesu as the radio would not power up) after the "event." However, I'm open to the possibility that I have missed something. I am leaning heavily toward just using it as is. There was a time when I was using an IC-821, that I didn't have CAT control, but I do miss my HRD. :( I would like to add that I am using a Prolific USB-to-serial converter that works flawlessly with my FT-857. Estonia Gets 3400 MHz Allocation

Estonian Radio Amateurs now have an allocation at 3400-3401 MHz. They can run 20dBW at antenna elevations below 10 degrees and 30dBW at elevations above 10 degrees. This is the same as for their 13cm allocation. This is welcome news and must increase the chances of getting a 3400 MHz Amateur Satellite Service allocation in ITU Region 1. It would be helpful if Amateurs/Societies in Region 1 countries without an existing allocation could press their regulator for access to 3400 MHz. It seems to me (presumptuous since my only satellite activity is reading the group!) that most of the responses suggest causes that would not be so sharply defined as Bill's observations. He says Either 0.7 degrees OR 4-5 degrees not a continuum of values. I would have to ask if there is any correlation with day of week, local weather conditions (also a continuum of values) or AO-7 mode immediately prior to the mode it is in when the observations are made (IIRC the mode can switch at random). Dayton SDR forum speakers sought

On Friday, May 14, I am the moderator (and speaker) at the SDR forum at the 2:30 PM - 5 PM session. I have two speakers (Scotty on openhpsdr, and I speak on general SDR topics). The following frequency bands and segments are authorized to space stations: (1) The 17 m, 15 m, 12 m and 10 m bands, 6 mm, 4 mm, 2 mm and 1 mm bands; and (2) The 7.0-7.1 MHz, 14.00-14.25 MHz, 144-146 MHz, 435-438 MHz, 1260-1270 MHz and 2400-2450 MHz, 3.40-3.41 GHz, 5.83-5.85 GHz, 10.45-10.50 GHz and 24.00-24.05 GHz segments. I also have noticed similar events with AO-7. I try to work into Northern Europe when the opportunity is there. As you mentioned, polarization, obstructions, local noise. I might add just being a bit temperamental at being up there for 35 years! Thank you for the information - I am getting now interested in this area to research what type of modes were used to communicate and the observed/reported characteristics of operation in those bands. Might come in handy when choosing subsystems to fly on future nano-satellites/pico-satellites. Hi, Samudra! The last major change in frequency allocations to the amateur-satellite service came from the 1979 General World Administrative Radio Conference. Domestically, the changes became "official" upon the consent of the US Senate. Suggest reading the paper on "Amateur Satellites" on the IARU web site and looking at the Annex with the frequency allocations. AO-40 attempted to use most of the UHF and SHF bands. No power limit is specified in the RR's. At the same time, the principle of using the minimum power necessary still applies. I hope this helps. 73, art..... For this you use a soundcard on the PC, no TNC. Few items are in German, but Google can translate those for you. 7.2 earthquake in DM22 at 2240z

I decided to go out from the city on an open field of wheat that is no longer in use, It was me and my son Kevin KJ6DDS, I just worked some stations on AO-27 pass at 2045z, and I let Kevin use the station for the last half of the pass, he was so exited he worked seven different station and a new record for him, after we finish load the station we went back home and picked up the rest of the family and hit food 4 less, we were just across the cash register when a terrible 7.2 earthquake shake DM22 it lasted for about 2 to 3 minutes, it was people running all over the parking lot and cars speeding up, no power and no signals on the streets and when we arrived home all people were outside. after that and by the time I'm writing this message there has been 162 more ranging from 2.7 to 5.1, and they has been more then 200 on the whole day. we got our power back but we think we are not sleeping tonight, I talk to all my friends here over our local EOC freq and everyone is ok, our death toll is only two people and around 100 injured, which is nothing compared with Haiti, we have several material damages but we hope to recover soon. 73 to all and hope to catch you on the sats soon!!!! AO-51 mode change

Hi All, AO-51 was changed a bit early today, at 21:10 UTC 4 April. It is currently in "normal mode", with 435.300 (145.920 uplink) running about 480 mW (and 435.150 running about the same). We hope to catch up on some telemetry during this week. If we don't need any telemetry, it is likely that we'll increase the power on 435.300. The schedule for the rest of the month should be posted soon--sorry for the delay. Beginning with May 2nd, periods of eclipse return to AO-51. We'll have to watch the satellite carefully and make some modifications to what we've been doing over the last several months. More details as we get closer to the eclipses... 73, Mark L. Low AO27 Hawaii footprint

Hello AMSATs, I am sending my greetings to all of you from Shanghai, where I participate at the Ham Radio Expo. It was a great experience to get in contact with the Chinese hams and to promote my linear transponder and also explain more about amateur satellites (which is still not very known to most hams here). I have given a presentation on the first and also on the second day. Twice, as there was a great interrest among the hams to get some more information about the satellite topic :o) I am sure there will be some more hams interrested in amateur satellites at this side of the globe... Unfortunatly I didn't see to many foreign hams, but I was lucky to meet Masato Shibayama, JA7JZS of the Japanese Amateur Satellite Association. We had a nice talk about satellites, and exchanged some new ideas. I also met one Dutch HAM, PA0RWH, which was also nice so far away from home :o) For the ICOM fans I also checked for the new IC-9100 but it was not presented at this ham expo. Question about WISP/TNC3s/FT-847

Who can help me with the following setup: I trying the combination of FT-847, WISP and TNC3S to work together. For satellite guidance I use SatPC32 (Doppler and Rotor controle) I've connected the TNC3S via the Packet connector to the FT-847 When I try to connect for example HO-68 using WISP. I find that WISP is trying to connect but the TNC3s isn't switching the PTT. The STA led on the TNC3s is activated but no Push to talk is activated on the FT-847. When I use the TNC3s without SatPC32 active on a simplex frequentie every work fine. Somebody any idea? The following version and hardware are in use: - PC P4HT 3.0 GHz and 2G memory - Yaesu FT-847 - microHam USB Interface III - Windows XP Professional SP3 US - SatPC32 12.8a - WISP (GSC V2.03, MsgMaker V2.10a, MsgView 2.00b, MSPE V2.01a, Procmail V2.00g,Updkeps V2.00c View-Dir V2.00e)

According to the Tiny Locator program from ON6MU (http://users.belgacom.net/hamradio/tinylocator.htm), our contact covered 7,399 kilometers/4,621 miles. Adrian’s commitment to activate Hawaii – during a vacation trip with his significant other – enabled me to put state No. 50 in the satellite log. He did the same for several others – among them Rick, WA4NVM; George, WA5KBH; Alex, KC7MG; Damon, WA4HFN; Matthew, KC7EQO; and Dave, KN4OK. I believe I speak for all of them when I offer my sincere thanks to Adrian for what I suspect he found was a fun – but, ultimately, Herculean – effort. Thanks, too, to Domenico, I8CVS, for his April 2 post to the AMSAT-BB about FO-29 currently being at or very near apogee during passes from north to south. That prompted me to look into whether we might have a chance on this satellite. During the contact, Adrian had about 2 degrees elevation with the satellite rising at his location; I had 1 degree with the satellite descending here in northeast Georgia. We worked the contact like one in a DX pileup on HF – brief and to the point! We tried unsuccessfully on AO-7 during three different Mode B days. The elevations were roughly the same as what we had on FO-29. However, FO-29’s Mode J configuration enabled each of us to use higher power on the 2 meter uplink than we could on AO-7’s Mode B uplink, on 70 centimeters. I suspect that made the difference. Our stations were identical, and included Yaesu FT-857D radios for transmit; Yaesu FT-817ND radios for receive; and the Elk 2M/440L5 log periodic antenna. All four radios were battery-powered. Thanks again to Adrian for making the significant time and effort to activate Hawaii as much as he has on this trip. Thanks to Dale (KL7XJ), Craig (KL4E) and Joe (AL1F) for activating Alaska so often on FM and linear satellites. Thanks to all of the satellite operators in most of the lower 48 who make their states available so often. And thanks to the rovers who have activated lower-48 states that have proved tough (Delaware immediately comes to mind), and for so many rare grid squares. Hello Alan WA4SCA and John K8YSE, Thank you both for the SO-50 contacts at the Raleigh Hamfest (RARSFest)! I appreciate your sharp ears and return calls. It made the demo successful. The location wasn't great (tall metal buildings!) but the biggest problem was a setting on my radio that I FINALLY figured out. Somehow, some way at Dry Tortugas the 2M uplink on my FT-817 had been changed from the rear SO-239 (which I use with the Elk) to the front BNC connector...it explains why I had no success on the boat ride from the island to Key West and why I couldn't work anybody during my first pass attempt on AO-27 today. Glad to figure that bugger out! I had the 435 band going to the right connector, but since the 2M band was "hidden" because of split memory channels it took me a while to figure it out. I was transmitting into a BNC connector without any antenna--hi hi. The hamfest was well attended with many out of town hams in the area because of the Easter weekend. Be sure your TNC-3S is setup for full Duplex, otherwise as long as WiSP hears a data carrier from the satellite it will not assert PTT. Also, in the Satellite Setup, TNC Settings Tab, be sure that "Test for Smack TNC" is not checked. There is a bug in this test and it was never implemented. What switch settings do you have set on the rear of your TNC-3S? Help!!

I have been inactive for awhile but am now ready to get back on the birds. In the meantime I changed from an older computer running Windows 2000 to a newer, faster one running Windows XP Pro. I am using SATPC32 with a Yaesu FT-736R and a LVB Tracker with a Yaesu 5500 AZ/EL rotor. Things are set up as far as I can tell the same as they were before. My rotor control works but the cat control doesn't. I am hoping there is some little thing I did before that I am forgetting to do now. PLEASE, any ideas? Al, W8KHP

HO-68 will be in FM mode over KH6 BL02ic in a bit. I will be on the satellite and it will be last opportunity to work me on FM on that satellite before my departure. I expect this to be a very busy pass since it is a Easter Weekend and many people will be on the satellite. I will do what I can to pull out calls until 19:05 UTC when the satellite switches off over KH6. I will not be giving out my grid to allow more users to work me, so when I acknowledge your call do not give me your grid. If I have acknowledged you and have I moved on;don't call me again just send me an email confirming your grid. I want to get as many contacts to have an opportunity to work KH6 on this pass.
